A few suggestions

A turn-based strategy game like no other has landed. Approachable, absorbing and visually impressive yet detailed, Battle Academy aims to revolutionise the strategy games market with a blend of intuitive design and compelling game play driven by cutting edge technical innovation. The game has more than 30 battles in a range of theatres of war from the North African desert through D-Day to the to the snowy Ardennes mountains where the Allies battled to repel the final German offensive. Now with additional battles on the Western Front with the expansions 'Blitzkrieg France', 'Market Garden', 'Operation Husky', 'Sealion' and 'Rommel in Normandy'.

A few suggestions

Post by rich12545 »

1. Allow hotkeys to be remapped. Some of us are left handed and would like all scroll type keys on the right. The numpad is a good place for that.

2. Make it so a scenario can be saved in the middle, then exit, without losing the battle. Just a simple exit.

3. Allow zooming out higher.

Other than this (so far) I'm liking the game. A simple tactical wargame. Very nice.

Thanks for the suggestions - I'll add this to the todo list.

The patch coming out before the end of the week will have a tweak to allow people who want to to zoom out as much as they like.

You can save a scenario at any point - just hit ESC to bring up the load/save dialog. Is that what you mean?

Cheers

Yes.  But then it was a hassle to exit the game.  There should be a simple way to quit without having to resign.  Maybe there is and I just didn't find it.

Another thing that has been popping up imo that doesn't quite 'feel' right is broken units still being able to opfire. I am unsure of the design rationale for 'allowing' that.

As an aside perhaps we can have a suggestions thread?

Great game btw.

Hey rich good to see you got the game.

I mouse on the left too but learn to deal with the hotkeys as best as I can.

Same here, Im a lefty and mouse on the left as well. Glad these requests were mentioned and I think I'll make it in the game just in time for the patch.

Another minor bug- I don't see a bug thread yet- carriers can drop off units on cliff squares which the infantry can then climb.

Yeah, it looked good. I kept asking questions to see if there was some sort of a game breaker for me and there wasn't. Very positive comments from just about everyone. After that it was just a matter of waiting for my monthly ss check to come in.

It's pretty amazing that, for a brand new game, how few suggestions and bug reports there are.

Pford, it has been mentioned at Slitherine's forums. I started using it as soon as I read about it. Don't tell the AI that I cheat.

Rich, I'm going to use Chandla's SP tools to try and duplicate some of Wild Bill's work in BA. Still working on converting German and Italian 3D units into Japanese, then come up with some USMC stuff.

1. Funny... I don't use hotkeys at all.
3. Someone edited a config file that will help zoom out. But this resulted into warnings during mutliplayer.

We found it was just too painful that once a tank was broken (and only armour gets to op fire when broken) you could chase it around the map with massively inferior armour without any fear of being fired back at. Now they get a single shot, and with a large penalty, but you can't send in your light tank to chase down the King Tiger until you get a lucky shot or it finally bails out.

The upcoming patch tomorrow or Friday allows a tweak which disables the zoom limiter. You'll see off the edge of the map, but it seems like it will make a good few people happy, and we aim to please!

Funny I was just thinking about Wild Bill the other day. Hadn't heard anything from him in a long time. But I haven't been to the spwaw forum in a while. I know he's just about exactly 10 years older than I am. Do you know if he's still around?

I'm finding it a little hard to locate infantry - mine and especially the enemy's!

Is there an option to add a unit base to units? Something like that of Tiler's Campaign Series for al units would be good.

Otherwise - this is a fun little game!

Fair enough, though I could have swore they fired more than once - will have to pay more attention next time.

Another issue: During the replay in MP I can 'see' the type and quantity of my opponents force as he does his moves in the lower left corner. I think I would rather be in the dark here! ie, FOW. Thoughts?

EDIT: You may want to take a look at this again to make sure it's working properly. I just had a broken tank, -11 morale opfire 5 times!

I find that those little flags seem to fade in and out for some reason. It can be a bit difficult to find some units at times...

I was also able to edit the game zoom, field of view and camera angle in a text file as follows:

C:\Matrix Games\Battlefield Academy\Battlefield Academy\Data\MAPVIEW

After a few experiments, I left the camera angle as it was originally (though you can take it right down to ground level if you choose) and just extended the zoom and FOW settings slightly. Made a huge difference.

And I just noticed that my games played on the Slitherine forum includes every time I saved and exited. Somehow that doesn't seem right.
