AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 08/15/42
AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 08/16/42 OK so it is early in the campaign. I have Port Moresby and have begun building Lunga. I do not want to wait for Dan to mass forces where ever he wishes and force me into reacting.
I on the other hand am engaged in reorganizing. So I am sending 4 CV
(Akagi, Hiryu, Soryu, and Shokaku) to launch disrupting raids against The South Pacific.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 08/17/42 carriers undetected so far. I plan on having a long range recon of L'ville followed by a carrier strike against the port the following day. (8/20/42 or 8/21/42) if the carriers are spotted prior to then they will return to Shortland.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 08/18/42

Air attack on TF at 10,50 my little suprise for Cairns get's caught, I aborted the mission and will try something else later. The minelayers will go to Lunga. The carriers remained undetected. I transfered a group of fighters to Lunga to fly CAP over them if anything bad should happen.
The recon flight should go tomorrow with the strike the following day.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 08/19/42 the carrier TF was detected but not reported as carriers. I am launching scouts at both L'ville and Noumea.
L'ville's port appears empty but there is a TF heading in it's direction.
I have left the airgroups on Naval attack 2 CV's prividing 100% CAP 1 on escort and 1 on rest(train) tomorrow I will be 8 hexes from L'ville and 12 from Noumea. If recon proves L'ville's port empty I will move 4-5 hexes south and attack Noumea.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 08/20/42 Well he spotted and ID'd my CV so I am retiring out of the area. I lost contact with the TF I spotted yesturday and L'ville is indeed empty. Noumea is too risky now that he knows where I am. (He still has all his CV and I di not know their location.)

Hi

Since Mogami is posting the AARs there is not much I can write all the time. However this is my view on the situation right now.

Me IJN

Well I'm building new bases and transporting troops and supplies all over the place at the moment. Boring work but it will pay off once the Allied storm comes.
Right now there is a lot of action close to Lunga and that is where I will win or loose the game. Steps are being taken to make it a fortess.

Me USN

Well same thing here really. I want to make sure that IF Mogami attacks Australia or my bases to the east (LG or Nomuea) he will pay a heavy price. Pretty sure that I'm about 80-90% ready now which is very good.

Especially my IJN game is heating up now after having been very quiet since my capture of PM.

Cheers
Dan

The long Lull

Post by mogami »

Greetings, Both games are in same condition with several differances. Dan as Allies did not fight all that hard to retain Port Moresby so he has lost nothing as far as naval assets go. He does not appear to be building any new bases in South Pacific and my latest recon shows L'ville to be empty of ships. So I am assuming (dangerous thing to do) He is content to just sit at New Calodonia and await reinforcment and dare me to come east.
I intend at some date in the near future to do just that.
Prior to attempting expansion to the east I plan on getting my "tail" in order. I am building level 3 ports and level 2 airfields in a chain from Rabaul to Lunga and Rabaul to Port Moresby.
When I am happy with my supply arrangments, and have stockpiled enough at the forward bases I will move east. At some point Dan will have to decide I've went far enough and come out for the knock down drag out fight to decide who is going to dictate the future course of action.

In the other game. Once again my worthy hedgehog opponent seems to be entrenching up to his eyebrows.
I have paid a heavy price trying to hold Moresby but it wil all be replaced. Both sides carrier forces have taken a pounding (each of us has lost 2 CV) I have to await heavy surface combatants (BB's come on thy are sitting there in Pearl) I have plenty of ground combat formations on hand but can not even think of moving to one of Dans bases intill I receive more ships. So in this game I think we are going to settle down to a period of 2 separte air battles. Northern Austraila versus PM and Gili, And Santa Cruz/San Cristobal/L'ville versus Lunga. I have the better bombers when it comes to base against base (those IJN bombers are much better in anti ship role then anti base)
It will be the fighters mixing it up. Lunga can support a large number of airgroups. I hope to make it a meatgrinder.
In both games it is late Aug 42. By the first of the year in both games................

Very Enjoyable AAR

Post by BK6583 »

I'm starting to look forward to reading about this epic clash each morning now. That said, I had two basic questions:

First, I've shied away from those scenarios starting in May/Jun '42 b/c it seemed the Japanese just began with too many trump cards. Your AAR seems to bear this out. I get the impression that whatever the Japs decide to go after, they'll get (like PM). As was said in some previous post, although the Japs don't have overwhelming strength, they do appear to have too much of everything in those critical early months of this campaign. So I'll be anxiously and curiously following this AAR to see if the Japanese player, avoiding the mistakes the real world Japs made in this theater of ops, can dig a hole so big that the ANZAC just won't be able to climb out of it by the time Dec '43 rolls around.

Second, just how many mines were actually 'sown' by both sides in this campaign? I don't recall reading much, if anything at all, about ANZAC or Jap ships being damaged or sunk by mines. I ask b/c I'm getting the impression from this AAR that as long as you have Jap MLs still floating and capable of moving back and forth from Truk, there's a 'seemingly' infinite supply of mines available for the Japs to lay everywhere. This AAR is starting to sound more and more like El Alamein at sea! Would either player care to comment - are you being overly 'gamey' or just taking advantage of what was historically available but not necessarily used or employed by either side during the actual conflict?

Keep this AAR going!!

Greetings, Hello BK683 I think the people who play scen 17 believe the length of the scenario (610 turns) allows enough time to reverse early set backs. Mines are a bother but you will not win/lose because of them. (unless your a knucklehead that ignores them)

DM Tracy, Bomb hits 5, on fire, heavy damage (scuttled next day) Ships operating in enemy air space have to insure they are clear when the sun comes up. Both these ships had speeds over 28knts so I am assuming it takes too long to lay mines more then 4-5 hexes inside enemy air range.
The Japanese have a much easier time finding good hexes to plant mines. They know at some point the allies must come to them. The allies can only use subs to place mines safely in enemy waters. Planting mines around friendly rear bases may never produce any results (other then making your own ships move around a hex)

I am suprised to see B-17s used so often at 1000 feet..........don't they lose an advantage with the norden bombsite 6000 feet and lower?

"I am suprised to see B-17s used so often at 1000 feet..........don't they lose an advantage with the norden bombsite 6000 feet and lower?"

Excellent question. I've been asking this myself. My experience with B-17's so far (mainly ground attack) is that when I set their altitude to 6,000 feet or higher to supposedly take advantage of the Norden Bombsight, I got a lot of 'Clouds obscuring target' (or something to that effect) type messages, followed by say, Casulties: 31 soldiers. When I set their altitude to 1,000 feet, I subsequently got 'Casulties: 120' (and sometimes even higher). It appears that the Norden Bombsite advantage is spurious.

Norden bomb sight

Post by Pawlock »

Actually this was discussed in a thread a while back, with a few replies from Matrix in return.

This is my understanding of it:

The bomb sight gives a bonus which is set and added to the equation of bombers at 6000ft and above. However once you drop below 6000 ft the bonus starts reducing dramtically until it is negligable at around 2000 ft( may be slightly out on this bit).

Now the way I interpret Level bombers and height is all heights are given a figure for the equation which as you get lower , it stands that the figure gets considerably more favourable.

So finally in answer to original question on why so many people bomb at 1000 ft , is probably through trial and error that although you lose the bonus for the bomb sight, the advantage for going in so low is far greater. Of course this low has many disadvantages , but sometimes its worth it to get good results.

It all makes sense when you think about it.

Hi folks

I've not posted in a while so here is my thoughts on both games.

Me IJN:

Well my advance stopped with the taking of PM and Lunga. The reason is that I dont have a single CV below 15 sys damage. It would be suicide to try anything at all without my carriers. I hope to have 3 CVs + 1 CVL when Mog goes on the offensive. For now I'm sending supplies, fuel and troops all over the place.

Me USN:

Well not much is going on here. I expect to be ready for an offensive by late December or early January. For sure Mogami could do something that would change those plans.

Greetings, I don't plan to sit around but I have to wait to arrange everything. Those B-17's in U2-USN/Mog-IJN have me worried.
In the other game there is not much I can do. The whole Japanese Navy appears to be hanging out at Lunga and everything else is out of range.

Great series of reports guys. Some curiousty questions....

You sure use mines a lot....is is really all that helpfull? Do the Allies get any minelaying ships or do they just have to use subs? I have'nt laid any mines in my games and I'm wondering if I should plan some off of Truk/Rabul/Shortland. Can you hit mines you laid?

Also, the planes on ASW.....are they effective also? Can they only catch subs on the surface? As the Allied player in a game, I'm sinking a lot of Jap ships by leaving packs off the major ports. In my Japan game, however, his subs are quiet.

Hi

Yes, mines are quite helpfull but to be honest they bugg the opponent more than they will win the war for you. If I am on the defensive I build up strong bases and also mine them so that when the invasion comes he will pay a price for it.

Yes, the allies have minelayers. They are called DM and you also have one minelaying sub.

Yes, you can hit mines that you have laid. For example: I mine Lunga but then that base becomes an Allied base. The next time I return I can hit my own minefield.

Planes on ASW: Well they wont hit everytime but if you have a few subs off one of your ports and not much action is going around it put 3-5 units of Hudsons or Mauraders on 100 ASW duty at 1000 feet. I have killed a few subs that way or damaged them so much that they must leave the area.

Hope this helped.

sub minelaying

Post by mogami »

Hi, All subs (both sides) can lay mines. The USN Argonaut can lay quite a few (a subject of hot debate) it even has it's own mine the Mk-12 it is the only allied minelayer that uses it)
