What happens if I do this?

Post by HansBolter »

What, exactly, happens if I click this cryptic button? What, exactly, does "click to keep factory" mean? Am I in danger of LOSING the factory if I don't click the button to "keep" it? That would be the natural aaaumption would one make from the message implied by the highlight text!

Didn't the devs bother to think about how people would interpret these kinds of cryptic messages when they decided they didn't need to bother to include a descripotion and explanation for them in the game manual? [&:]

Yet again, another feature completely unexplained by the game manual. The manual may be a fine work of Romance Literature, but it falls far, far short of providing a concise technical description of the game and how to play it. [:-]

It allows you too stop the factory from upgrading. In the case of the P-38G factory. If left alone it will automaticly upgrade to producing P-38Hs when that becomes avaible at 6/43, and so on. If u change it not to upgrade. It will keep producing P-38Gs.

Hope it helps,

Manual page 230 , 2nd paragraph ---'The player can also turn off or on any automatic industry upgrade. This is useful if the player wishes to continue producing a particular item (like a certain aircraft) with out having the factory suddenly upgrade.'

Walloc- Well, you guys have certainly opened a BIG can of worms for me.

I thought as Allies I didn't have to worry about production. Now it would seem I've got to learn a whole new -something or other, I not sure what.

Is this a major thing I have to worry about? Or what? If so, can someone lead me by the hand thru the first few steps?

Comments, please. Thanks, Hugh Browne

As Allies, do nothing, I don't think you can turn factories off as Allies.

You don't need to worry about production, but it's worthwhile to look at which base facilities have Repair turned On or Off when the scenario begins. Especially in China, having these On can eat you out of supplies very fast. Decide how you want to go, set them, and don't worry about re-checking until much later in the war.

Also, sometimes Repair is needed due to combat damage. In my current game, the IJN carrier struck the shipyard at Soerbaja in February 1942 while I still very much needed it for submarine repairs. I think it's a size 8. They did 8 damage to it, making it inoperable. I turned on Repair long enough to take down 3 points of damage and allow the Dutch subs to refit.

Overall though, as the Allies, forget the economy. You will have more fuel and supplies than you can ship over the course of the war. Even though you will get shortage messages in Tracker fro various bases, especially early, you don't need to worry about them.

Well i wouldnt say its a big can of worm. I'd say there are a few aircrafts i would consider putting on keep instead of upgrading. Again ppls view on this will ofc differ. Im not saying its a final list but a few things to consider.

The B-25C factory is obviously one. If u want some level bombers, non AB to stay in service i think this is a choice for consideration. U will get ABs any how as replacements.

Another i'd consider but its late in the game and depence on pools at that time. i've never gotten that far, so im certainly not set in stone.
The Aussie Beaufort VIII a capable torp bomber upgrades to Beaufigther 21 in late 44. Seemingly its a fairly crappy figther bomber and i wonder if u need that at that point in time. Again if u had a million Beaufort VIIIs in the pool, but if not. OTOH torp bombers seems more valueble than a poor figther bomber. U even have 2 factories so u even have the choice in maybe keeping 1 of them as Beaufort VIIIs.

I havent looked at that closely but those two are the ones i've identified as possibles. I wouldnt expect there to be many more where its a real option.

Hope it helps,

Rasmus

U cant per say turn the factories off, but if i understand the manual and interface correctly u can stop factories from upgrading the plane it produce.
Whether this is some thing to consider look in above post.

Kind regards,

The Allies have two optons for their on-map plane factories:

 1) Turn repair on/off. (Default setting is ON)

 2) Allow plane types to upgrade, or keep at the current model. (Default setting is UPGRADE)

Since almost all Allied plane factories are located in large cities on the US west coast (there are 3-4 in Melbourne, and a handful in Russia) and all start with no damage, there is no reason to turn repair off. (Nor is there much chance of the plane factories ever sustaining damage)

There is no reason to keep the same type of plane, rather than upgrading. In almost all cases, the original plane type is scheduled to cease production before the upgrade model starts production, so keeping the factory at the same type will not provide any benefits. In addition, many of the upgraded units have no off-map replacement rates, so upgrading the on-map factories is the only way to get any of these planes.

Ok, so end date will keep a non upgraded factory from actually producing the old plane?
I thot about that, but since i never actually done so it, so i've never tested it.
Voiding the reason not to upgrade for those cases, that it be desireble in.
Any how i wasnt suggesting it overall as an good idea only possibly in a few cases.

Kind regards,

Rasmus

Actually the one posting about turning off, was talking of factories in china
so supplies arent diverted to repairing... through if bombed out their not going to work and if repair on...they constant try repair costing supplies..

Airplane factories are of course out of way unless japanese player drives a CV group up north to bomb North West USA..

Australias are vulnerable at least till allied player moves more planes from USA prod to there to cover.

Noise? What Noise? It's sooooo quiet and Peaceful!

With regard to the OP's question, one thing that is often helpful is to click the button, then read what the text is for clicking back. Often seeing both sides of the toggle helps clarify what otherwise might be cryptic.

In this case, the opposite of "click to keep factory" is "click to allow factory upgrade"; this helps a lot.

If you're worried about breaking something in your game, remember you can play around all you want and not save the game.

Yea, thanks for the heads up. I apparently opened a can of worms by missing something that WAS actually covered in the manual.

I am humbled by the discovery that the manual actually had an explanation. [&o]

As promised in another thread. I tested if plans on keep, keeps being produced and the stop dates only applies to replacements. A pic is worth a 1000 words, i hear.

Hope it helps,

Rasmus

Thanks for testing it, Walloc!  So it seems that Allied players can keep some of their favorite planes producing past their upgrade/end of production date, IF there is a factory in game producing them and if they turn off that factory upgrade.  [:)]

Your welcome, but im not sure i would phrase it like that.
Question to me is if end date isnt meant specific to replacement not production per say. I mean originally the designers made an active action to have have the keep button in the game. Didnt appear by magic. Why include a feature with no function. As opposed to have features with unforseen effects.

Ofc i could be wrong,

And next time do what I always do when I don't know what will happen next - Save the game and then click the button... [:)]
