Is there anyway to "resurrect" a remnant?

Post by AW1Steve »

I've got a small remnant of a squadron that survived the loss of it's carrier. Is there any way that I can either "rebuild" the squadron, or expand the number of pilots in the remnant? What I'd like to do is use it like a real life "RAG" or replacement Air Group, to train up carrier qualified pilots for the sea going squadrons. The only way to do that currently is to "beach" squadrons off a carrier , and either don't the carrier or replace those squadrons with USMC squadrons. Any suggestions, insights or thoughts would be most appreciated. Except from Chickenboy. You did this you @##$$%%%^%$#@#! [:D]

Well, it was my pleasure.

Steve, I think that this is not possible. I've had a couple daitai of stranded A6M2s from carrier losses in one of my other PBEM games. I can't get them to add pilots, take on replacement a/c to fill back out or do anything. I hope I'm wrong, but I think they're just that-fragments-that cannot resume their previous size or function.

I've thot the same thots. I havent lost a carrier with designated air units on it yet,(cough cough, im jinxed now) so i've never gotten to test it, but when ever other ships are lost. U can buy back the floatplane unit, via the destroyed airunit list. My assumption would be that the same goes for carrier air units. Have u checked that list?
2ndly, if the other units are there. Would disbanding the remnant, if the parent arent on the list, casue the parent to appeare on that list?

Remember to save before u test any thing.

Hope it helps, and lets us know what u find out please

As Walloc says, you should be able to buy back the unit through the destroyed air unit list:

Go to the Intelligence Screen (hit the 'I' key).
Click on 'Aircraft Losses.'
Click on List 'Destroyed Air Groups.'
Right click on the unit you want to reconstitute.
The air unit will be placed in the reinforcement queue to arrive in about a year.

This works for the Allies -- I haven't confirmed that it works for Japan, but I'd be surprised if it didn't.

As for the fragment, you should probably just disband it so that the pilots and planes either go back to the pool or into another unit.

Didn't know the details of how to do that. Cool.

How cool is that? You learn something new every day around here. Thanks for the good advice, guys. [&o]

It does work for the japanese. Save up some PPs for them. You can buy them back immediately but it will take a year from "day of destruction" whenever you invest in them.

PS

Please note that once clicked you cannot undo it other then reloading the turn and you can go negative in PP's (tested this)

If one pays the PP to get back former capital-ship floatplanes in a year, what does one do with the unit? I'm not sure that a one-Wally unit based at an airfield would be worth having, when the computer compares an air field's size to the number of air units stationed there. Or am I missing something.

Personally i dont see much point in the FP units either. CAGs i do see a major point in, especially as USN lacks training squadrons.
Japanease have some AVs, that might have some left over capacity, where FP units could be used. Is Langley if she survives a possbility?(havent checked). Else i guess u could use them as training units or posssibly ASW duties on far off bases in the base hex it self.
Level 9 and 10 AF doesnt have a max capacity so u'd avoid that problem on those.

Kind regards,

That's why it is left to the player's discretion.

Only reason I would bring back a small FP group would be if I had a capital ship that had lost it's group for whatever reason.

Am I crazy, or is it trre that some capital ship FPs are actually fragments of a larger unit and that they can be recombined?
Occasionally, and randomly, problems and solutions collide. The probability of these collisions is inversely related to the number of committees working on the solutions. -- Me.

I don't know if you are crazy, but it is true that some capital ships FP squads are part of a larger unit and can be recombined. In particuar, the FP squads on Australian CAs/CLs can be recombined.

Personally i dont see much point in the FP units either.

The IJNAF can use Rufes (float fighter) effectively as either point defense or to train up IJNAF fighter pilots. Thus a FP group can be used as a naval air training group. While I would balk at Pete pilots training for "escort" duties, the deployment of the Rufe makes this a legitimate non-gamey option for FP pilot training.
