Close Combat – Last Stand Arnhem is a highly enhanced new release of Close Combat, using the latest Close Combat engine with many additional improvements. Its design is based on the critically acclaimed Close Combat – A Bridge Too Far, originally developed by Atomic Games, as well as the more recent Close Combat: The Longest Day. This is the most ambitious and most improved of the new Close Combat releases, but along with all the enhancements it retains the same addicting tactical action found in the original titles! Close Combat – Last Stand Arnhem comes with expanded force pools, reserve & static battlegroups, a troop point buying system, ferry and assault crossings, destructible bridges, static forces and much more! Also included in this rebuild are 60+ battles, operations and campaigns including a new enhanced Grand Campaign!

If my Machine Gunner on the second story is able to mow down lots of guys why does the assistant rifleman get all the credit?

Steve has explained this in other forums. I'll get him to have a look and repeat it.

*EDIT*

"The guy with all the kills was manning the MG at the time, even though the
other soldier is technically the gunner."

Do you have any in-game screenshots - this might show the assistant, Hochbaum,  doing the business.

Have no screenhots of it, but I've seen 'support weapon', especially the BAR in US Rifle squads, moving around between soldiers in the squad while they've been moving.

Since this happens, it's not sure that it's the designated gunner who has the gun when the action starts.

Gunner and Loader switching roles.
The Loader is the lowest ranking soldier in the squad...so why did Herr Sürenhagen gets to hog the leMG34?  The Nazi party connection is the only logical explaination! [;)]
