August 15th Orders

I moved I-16 further west.

I started the last two AP conversions at Truk.

I started a conversion for an ACM at Rabaul.

I am experimenting with these PB boats that claim to carry 1000 cargo each. I took three of them in Truk and had them set up a Fast Transport to Kavieng to start to establish the submarine base there.

I need to get fuel into Kavieng, so I took the smallest TK Fujisan Maru and had her start loading 1250 fuel in Truk for Kavieng.

Nothing else can move for lack of escorts.

To unload or not unload

Post by MichaelU »

APDs were definitely set for unload. I remember checking this multiple times, inlcuding after the fact when I noticed the air support wasn't actually onshore, but still on the ships.
Only explanations I can think for this are:
The slow speed (18 knots) means it took 24 hours to cover the six hex run into Lae. Seems unlikely.
Some sort of weird calculation about staying out from under enemy air cover made them delay their run. Which would hardly explain why they were parked in Lae fully loaded as the sun rose high into the sky.
They want to die for the Emperor, and worry that as an air support unit they won't get the chance. So they delayed the run into Lae in the hopes their ships would get sunk. Possible.

It should have taken 13 hours and 20 minutes to cover 240 nautical miles.

I too am at a loss to explain this.

Suggest you move the APDs to a number of hexes equal to a full speed move from Lae with mission speed and unload orders. I've seen FT TFs do odd things if simply ordered to move to the target from a longer distance than one full speed hop (usually 5 hexes).

Thanks Cribtop, a cracking suggestion, I tried it against the AI, starting from 5 hexes out, and those APDs went in and out in one night just like they're supposed to. Now I'll try it in the real thing and those guys will probably sail in great big circles and get smashed to pieces.

I see from your AAR that you're an ex-Combat Mission player. I loved that game, played it from the initial Beta all the way through to the release of CM:Shock Force, which kind of killed the love for me.

Back to the game. The exciting news this time is the arrival of Combined Fleet. Oh, to see that list of ship arrivals scrolling past, the excitement, the drum rolls. No longer will we be the whipping boys of the Allied Fleet, oh no, now we're going to give some out.

With that in mind, I have decided on the cunning plan of using the painfully slow Mutsu as bait to see if can draw some DBs out of Lunga to the sort of range they won't be escorted, and then smacking them with plenty Zeros. This happened to me against Mike and it hurt.

If there isn't a strong reaction, the real force of 2BBs and about 5 CAs, with escorts, will go down and give Lunga a good old fashioned HE pasting. Covered all the time by carriers at a sensible range, and some fighters flying out of my newly established air base on Buka.
Man, I wish I had some more land-based air.

Speaking of which, Mike was wasting time with his wife instead of doing his logistics job, and I've cocked things up horribly in the interim, dropping Rabaul below 20,000 supply so the fighters won't draw new aircraft. See what happens when you put a strategy man in charge of logistics.

Lae Disaster

Post by MikeS4269 »

August 18th

I loaded up the turn expecting it to take just a few minutes. I had a lot to do this morning and time was short. I knew we just needed a tweak and I could be on my way.... or so I thought!

Disaster struck off of Lae today, and I have no idea how it could have happened.

I / we are still in shock. How the heck could this disaster happen? How did he slip through the Bismark sea undetected and catch us by surprise?? We have lots of air search covering the whole place and Bettys and Vals ready to strike out at a moments notice.

I just lost my APDs, the backbone for our Milne Bay invasion in just a few weeks!! This was a huge set back for future amphibious operations!!

Arnhem is one lucky son of Uncle Sam this morning...

August 18 Orders

I had a fast transport group going from Truk to Rabaul with 3900 supplies on lots of DDs and CLs and have opted to keep them going – he probably will be long gone by the time they arrive in Lae.

Ponape is finally loaded with the 9000 supplies and being met by an escort group. It is on the way to Rabaul.

About to do a massive troop and construction battalion shift from Truk to Rabaul. I will begin loading next turn. The escorts should return from the fast transport run in a few days.

Ugh. He must have seen the aborted effort yesterday. Still begs the question of how Arnhem got there in the first place without being spotted.

Yep, that area is covered with Bettys on search, because all my Emilys seem to be back in the shop getting fixed. It's 9 hexes in and 9 hexes out, which in theory should have left him just south of Milne Bay getting pounded by Bettys. But that's now how it happened. Maybe it's just that I don't understand how these things work.

In one way we have paid for being too predictable. We ran a fast transport group in, then came back and did it again. He must have spotted them revving up for the run in, and decided it was worth the risk.

Allied surface TF is at Lunga, I'm guessing supporting the unloading of some air support to get the airbase up and running. Might be worth having a go at this with my carrier TF, although it is probably a turn too far out to get there next turn.

Just did a test run against Lae vs AI, like I thought the ships start about 9 hexes out and end about the same distance away after. So either he has magic mojo in his engines we don't know about, or he was very lucky not to be spotted by naval search.

Check out the Japanese pilot replacement pool. Can I trust men such as McMillan and McGarry not to be spies?

Michael feels the fast transport run to Lae should pull into Rabaul first. I agreed over text messages. They might get some heavy cruisers to escort them in next time.

Michael is trying some fancy maneuvers around Lunga. He is bringing the CVs into range of the island, if just for a short time. I'm feeling uneasy about this and will focus on my army moves. I support his judgment. Hopefully, he can explain a bit of it here.

I am starting to load a MASSIVE troop convoy out of Truk. I have something like fifteen or more ships loading up. Three assault groups and two construction battalions. We are really going to boost New Guinea for the hatchet on Port Moresby.

I got a new sub and sent her to patrol in close around Lunga. Until now, I avoided shallow water....

My wife had forgotten that WitP AE was a slightly 'time consuming' game. When only 'a little bit' can be two or more hours per day, she starts to raise eyebrows. Should I sneak the laptop to the bathroom next time?

I was also a bit nervous about moving carriers within dive bomber range of Lunga, but hadn't seen any sign of aircraft there, and reckoned if I stayed at 7 hexes any dive bombers would be unescorted, minimising the danger. Plus my Vals have a 7 hex range, right?
The temptation was two groups of ships, one off Lunga and one off Tulagi, and no sign of any carrier support. It seemed too good an opportunity to pass up. Maybe too good. I bring up some surface ships in case there's a follow up attack to be made. I've also set up my Bettys to attack at range 14, to get in on the action after the carriers have cleared the way.

Of course the Bettys go in first against Lunga. I whimper with fear -- but there is no cap, so they slide in, hitting nothing.
The carriers stop 7 hexes off Lunga, and flights of Vals go after a 2 DD and AK group off Tulagi, while the Kates go after the CAs Canberra and Australia, escorting some transports off Lunga. The Tulagi group get obliterated, with about 6-8 bombs into each ship. The Canberra takes three torpedoes and the Australia two, which has got to hurt. It was at this point that I realised Val 2s have a six hex range, unlike Val 1s. Curses.

Unfortunately the Bettys decide that their primary target is actually the BB North Carolina, spotted lurking around Milne Bay. They run into a CAP of Kittyhawks. Now, I wouldn't normally mind if the 30 and 9 Betty strikes actually hit anything, but depite about 20 actually making torp runs, they score zero hits. What a pity, damaging the North Carolina now would have given us surface fleet dominance par excellence. About 10 Bettys lost for nothing.

Turns are running ahead of my ability to post AARs. More to follow soon on surface combat slaughter, the bombard TF that wouldn't retire, and some hot sub action.

Revenge for Lae Disaster

Post by MichaelU »

I took the liberty of moving SSI-162 to where I thought the fleeing CAs from the Lunga battle would end the turn, and sure enough there at least one of them was. Below is the third most beautiful sight in the world, the last of three torpedoes to slam into the side of the Australia. If she survives this, then that is a true tribute to Aussie toughness.

At the same time my surface TF of two BBs and 5 CAs charged into Lunga, taking advantage of the seeming lack of air cover to give it a good pasting. And were they surprised to encounter two DDs and an unloading xAK. Not as surprised as the Allied ships, which very rapidly disappeared to the bottom of the ocean. The revenge for the humilation at Lae was complete.

But then day dawned, and imagine my surprise when the bloody BBs were still sitting off Lunga, calmly laying in their guns for the bombardment. If he had brought his carriers up to protect the fleeting CAs, they might have been caught without air cover and decimated. Whew, a bullet dodged. They bombard and get out safely.

The CVs pull back, giving Millne Bay airfield a pasting on the way past, to little effect. I mean geez, a whole set of carriers getting 11 airfield hits, whoopee. Then it's off to Truk to refuel, rearm and protect the huge convoy from hell that Mike has been loading up in Truk. It has 30,000 fuel, 10,000 supply and a bucket load of troops, so the enemy carriers getting in among this lot would be pretty worrying.

I saw a fleet creeping slowly up the coast of Australia, until about 10-12 hexes outside Milne Bay. I quickly switched all my Bettys over to Lae, only to find they can't use torpedoes there. Not sure why, need to research that. So instead I've moved a raiding force of CLs and DDs into a position to sweep south of PM next turn, just in case. They could always have a go at the ASW force that is bugging Mike's subs down there.

For those interested, here are the ship losses. You can see the humiliation of Lae, followed by the glorious victory at Lunga.

PM must be cut off

Post by MichaelU »

Aha, Mike's subs spot that missing fleet, 3 hexes south of PM. An attempt to torpedo the xAK is brushed off by the escorts, with no loss to either side. We send a few subs to try close off the route into PM, but just to make sure set the Bettys up for a torpedo run, with hopefully escorts flying out of Lae and Buna. Man, if those airfields get closed off by weather or something, we might have unescorted Bettys going in, which would be horrible to behold.

And to make extra sure, I route the raiding force of 3 CLs and 4 DDs to run in just south of PM.

In a moment of light amusement, and to prove that even the logistics guy can stuff up logistics, Mike somehow manages to lift 26,000 supply out of Rabaul heading towards Truk. He swears those weren't the orders he gave them. In true army spirit, after loading all those supplies, and getting two hexes out of Rabaul, they are ordered to turn around, head back to Rabaul and unload again. Some beheadings were needed to restore morale.

Those Allied carriers not turning up anywhere is freaking me out. Turn sent now, nothing we can do about it.

Banzai! "Where are the CVs" is a heartburn inducing question in this game that has to be asked all too often.
