Harpoon CE or Harpoon 3 ANW

Post by ade670 »

Guys,

Please forgive me for asking perhaps something that has been asked many times before. - I am going to ask anyway!!

I am a big fan of WITP_AE and am looking at the Harpoon Series to give me a 'real time'' not turn based wargaming experience - oh yeah, Modern too.

I have tried the demo of Harpoon CE and liked it although it does feel dated somewhat.

What is the difference between CE and ANW ? and which one would you reccomend?

I enjoy complexity and realism at the strategic level.

I will copy this into the ANW forum also

Ade

H3ANW is more complex, and I suppose, in that vein, more 'realistic' (a rather subjective term). However, I think it probably shines brighter in the smaller scale engagements rather than at the theater wide or strategic level. HCE is probably better there, but that's just one opinion among many, and I will certainly admit my bias. [;)]

Oh, best not to forget that H3 ANW has multiplayer and HCE does not. Looks can be deceiving, the guts of HCE are ever evolving and we always can use new volunteer efforts to push forward!

I do not quite agree that ANW is decidedly more realistic. In some ways, it is. In others, it may not be. There are many things that are more controllable in ANW than in HCE. The ANW Databases can certainly contain more detail, but they are often done in a fairly simplistic fashion.

I think that the detection procedure in HCE has much more variability. The sensor detection sweeps are only conducted intermittently. This means that it is possible for something like a Yak-36 Forger to actually sneak up on a Sentry if the AEW plane has a string of bad luck when rolling for detection. I do not find this the same in ANW. In my impression with ANW, a unit will always be detected at the same distance from the sensor. Thus, there is no variance (at least in my experience).

As I said, its very subjective. Some folks think more complexity equals more realism. I don't always agree with that approach, either.

My winning formula for vanquishing enemies in ANW MP combat is a red lantern and a tall, cold glass of Coke nearby as I send a volley of Mk 48s or AS-4 Kitchen towards his ships.  [8D]
