probably because they had different equipment due to one or more of them having upgraded some of their devices. It´s the same as with aircraft, if you split a squadron and upgrade each part to a different aircraft you can´t combine the parts again until all fly the same ac.

That's correct Castor, I made a comment about this in the last post.
Seems like one of the regiments have an upgraded light tank type as well as 47mm AT guns instead of 37mm.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Nov 25, 42

Surface Combat

A series of surface engagement near the Marquise Islands.
- First a Squadron of 5 old destroyers engage a superior force of 5 US fleet destroyers plus the
large French destroyer La Triomphant. The first engagement is indecisive but a follow up engagement at Nuku Hiva
is more deadly as the Allied force achieves surprise. La Triomphant start landing 138mm shells on 2 of our ships and
the situation starts to get critical; just then a lucky shell ignites the magazine aboard the French ship and
she goes straight down! The two sides then continue an even duel without anyone getting the upper hand.

In the third engagement the Kamikaze is hit again and eventually sinks later in the day as flooding continous to increase.
In return the Reid is shot up badly. Suddenly 2 US destroyers collide and the USS Case is reported sunk.

Finally our main force, 4 destroyers led by the light cruiser Yubari engage 3 US fleet destroyers in an indecisive
engagement. Tomorrow the Yubari force will sweep the waters and attempt to drive off the remaining US ships.

Total casualties in these engagement;
Japan: 1 small Jap destroyer sunk and one moderately damaged.
Allies: 1 large French destroyer sunk, 1 US destroyer sunk and 1 US destroyer moderately damaged.

Today brings jolly good news; The KB Strikes Gold! [8D]
- The convoy we pursued yesterday didn't scatter and got the hammer.

We damaged 1 KV, 3 destroyers and sank / torched 6 fleet oilers, 1 tanker and 5 cargo ships!

The especially good news is that the ships were mostly loaded fleet oilers!!
We have already sunk a large number of Allied tankers (almost 50) and I think Andy is short and therfore using
cargo ships and fleet oiler to move his fuel!

Listened to Steve Jone's Fire & Gasoline as the bombers did their work.
Not sure Andy appreciated the reference, no comments back today.

Damaged:

KV Freesia, Bomb hits 1, on fire
DD Patterson, Bomb hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
DD Porter, Bomb hits 1, on fire
DD Crosby, Bomb hits 3, heavy fires, heavy damage

Yoikes! I think you are going to have a lot of environmental protests after that one![:-]

That gives me an idea - perhaps I should put Andy Mac in touch with BP about how to move oil across water ...[8|]

Seriously though, yours is the first AAR I have seen with a raid that close to the map edge and clearly it was a smart play. Well done! [&o]

Congrats, more to the point though - that you've sunk 50 of his tankers. That has got to be hurting. I hate losing my tankers.

Oil disperses well in the middle of the ocean, natural product [;)]
- As you remember my replenishment fleet ran into an AMC and I thought the game was up.
Obviously Andy had a TF in the area and his evasive action just didn't work.

Earlier Andy has escaped by using the "maps edge exits" and I had a feeling he might try for that again.
A delay in the Allied buildup of fuel will be a welcome bonus; anyone know how many fleet oilers like this the Allies got in 42?

YES Al, I also hate loosing my tankers! [:@]
Talk about taking the fun out of things...guess that's payback for invading Kiwi land [:'(]

Allied tankers sunk

48 tankers and fleet oilers on the tracker list; the last 5 are not included as I didn't observe them sink but we all know what happens to fully loaded and burning tankers in AE...

Sorry mate. Don't worry Karma will take strips out of me, but I just couldn't resist. Or maybe it is karma ON YOU for invading Kiwi land - very ungentlemanly ;-P

Christchurch will be renamed Geisha City for that offense Al! [;)]

No sign of more enemy ships in the Pacific today so I'm ordering the fleet to move south to coordinate an operation
in the Marquesas.

Our surface forces in that area successfully moved on the enemy transports and shot up 2 troop ships and a seaplane tender.
- Andy probably sent his reserves against us as we moved south, cause in the afternoon our force (now almost without
ammo) met 2 enemy light cruisers and 4 destroyers. We lost a destroyer to a torpedo hit and the Yubari took a 6" shell.
Even though outmatched we fought back well and scored hits on 3 enemy ships before making good our escape.

Good job, PzB.  This warfare in the depths of his rear must be hurting him as much as would warship losses or a lost battle directly.  It would be crucial to know how much TK, AO and fuel transport capacity Andy has left to supply his forces in OZ.  Without plenty of supplies, you might hold out at Darwin much longer and Andy might have to take it from the sea.  Maybe you could even bag a couple of LCUs near Tenant creek now.

I think you have the playbook in your hand in OZ and CentPac presently due to your counterstrikes.  Though not safely, and you should probably devise a bigger plan or feint to threaten some of Andy's strategically important points and force him to redesignate forces to defense/reconquest that might be presently trained on your important points, Darwin, Port Moresby, the Solomons, the Gilberts, the Marinas...

The naval campaign in SW and CentPac is very promising, and will do long term damage.  Andy is probably rerouting convoys to longest routes, and sending his USN assets to catch your KB.  Do you have an idea of the whereabouts of his CV?  Ready to set up a trap, or would you rather want him to chase goose and burn his fuel while he cannot himself use his CVs for any offensive action against your shipping/bases?  My feeling is you should devise a trap since you might still be numerically stronger in CV air, and number of CVs -- chances won't get any better from now on.  And from so many other AARs I kind of get the impression to hope for intervention of land bases air later in the war as Japanese is futile and won't make up for the increase in USN numbers and quality (see Spruance and Stoneage, Canorebel and others).  This is the time where a won CV battle may gain you another 6 months of initiative for offensive actions and raiding.

In Burma, I can only congratulate to your successful air campaign.  Stand and fight was definitely the right choice.  The supply model in town/out of town really should be looked at, this seems quite gamey.  You should be able to supply forces at a railhead for a short while, even if it would burn supplies much faster.   Your ground losses sound horrible on first look, but compared to the later battles or European theater, what are 25.000 casualties?  How long will it take to get the units back up to strength, and experience?  When can you start counterattacking Andys LCUs?
Inquisitor has probably the same aggressive spirit that I do, but I kind of am governed by the German experience or the CSA problems of the Civil War: Enemy much superior in number, so a "tactical victory" is a "strategical defeat".  It would be great if you tried to cut off Andy's stacks at Mandalay and Schwebo and tried to bag a couple of divisions.  That would be the better approach to gain safety for another year or more.  And it would hopefully then free a division or two for other theaters, that may soon need them.  Or even for raids of your own.

Finally, what are your plans for dealing with the RN in the theater?  Any pay-back plans for the recent BB losses near Ceylon?

Yep, those last tankers will hurt!
- Still it's a costly and time consuming operation we have launched. I'm using 2 replenishment fleets and it has taken weeks to get them unnoticed into the Central Pacific.
A natural #2 assignment will now be to destroy the Allied buildup in the Marquese islands.

No idea were US carriers are; some will still be repairing battle damage and I would assume West Coast and PH.
It's also possible that Andy has transferred one or more to the Indian Ocean but I don't think this is the case.

Andy will not sortie his carriers unless he thinks he can take on only a part of the Combined Fleet; as long as the KB is around he will shun the place.
So if we want to arrange a carrier clash we need to use bait and trickery [;)]

Being able to take a battle of attrition in Burma is hardly a victory, but at least we prevented a major defeat.
We need 2-3 weeks to rest and replenish our troops in the region and bring in reinforcements. A New Years offensive may be an option unless Andy goes at it again (which I think he will).

I have not see anything more of the RN since the massacre of our Bombardment Fleet.
The Mini KB together with 100 naval bombers in Rangoon and Port Blair is more than enough deterrent; on the other hand the Mini KB is to weak to go hunting on its own.
- So I'm playing a waiting game in the Indian Ocean; maybe Andy will sortie again and / or try to bring in more supplies to Chittagong. He will have to if he's planning another offensive...so let's prepare a welcome committee for him [8D]

Air Combat

The most constructive thing we did today was to bomb an armored bde in North Oz.
All attacks in Burma is doing fine little else than burning supplies.

Guess Andy's escorts and sweepers stayed home again today cause all his B-17s came out against
Mandalay alone. The first 61 met no opposition but the following 2x6 flights met a total of 73 fighters with plenty
of time to intercpet; yeah that's overkill - you would think.

The results were simply that all our fighters were damaged, shot down, spent their ammo, fuel, chickened out or some other failure.
Not a single 4E was reported shot down and all 12 bombed Mandalay. True enough, 4 were reported as OP losses against 4 Tojo's lost in A2A.

- I know what Andy would say; I lost 4 irreplacable B-17's....yeah, but shouldn't 73 fighters make short process of 12 unescorted Forts?
Was this just another in the long long line of poorly organized and executed attacks in poor weather were we should expect this realistic outcome?

What do you think, is this out of whack or high level realism [&:]

Your results in this case were particularly poor. Generally, though, you can and will do better. I have done better. Forts are tough, but once they are gone, it will get easier until the super forts come along. Liberators, although tough, are not nearly as tough as the forts.

Well, I've never done better and never managed to directly shoot down more than a couple of B-17s in any circumstances in AE.
It could of course be that the Tojo doesn't pack enough punch but with high quality pilots and so many fighters I would expect more.

- One of the problems may be that in AE all the fighters go in piecemeal; in real life they would go in 2 and 2 or more and disrupt the defensive gunners.

One thing I know and that is that we can never stop or turn back a formation of 50+ Forts, not even with 250 Tojo's.

Hmmh, it does sound very weired -- if not like a joke -- that 73 Ki-44 wouldn't score some success against 12 B17 in flights of sixes.  Either your pilots are totally inexperienced, forgot their ammo, or were caught in a typical Burmese "snow" storm and missed the party... [X(]  Maybe they had way to much sake.  Seriously, if the circumstances were not totally against them, coming in droves they should have downed at least a few of them directly.   The Fortresses are armored comparably well, yes, but 73 should have managed to convert some wings and engines intp cheese -- more than just 4 operational losses...  Maybe would be interesting to send a save to the developers and have them analyze why basically nothing happened.

Japanese aircraft
Ki-21-IIa Sally x 78
Ki-43-Ic Oscar x 41

Ki-45 KAIa Nick x 17

Japanese aircraft losses

Airfield Attack: 4 x 250 kg GP Bomb
33 x Ki-21-IIa Sally bombing from 15000 feet
Airfield Attack: 4 x 250 kg GP Bomb
25 x Ki-21-IIa Sally bombing from 15000 feet *
Airfield Attack: 2 x 250 kg GP Bomb
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

No surprising result: Bombing from 15,000 feet, no heavy bombload for the Sallies (25 of them did even fly extended range with a bombload of just 2x 250kg) and ostensibly quite heavy flak that damaged some bombers and disrupted the others (seems that Andy has some 3.7in AA guns at Shwebo). B-17 at normal range (8x 500lbs = 4,000lbs) has the double bombload as a Sally at normal range (4x 250 = 2,000lbs). B-17 has longer range, of course.

Depends on how many actually engaged the B-17's. Not shown in the Combat Reports. But it seems that the Ki-44's at least disrupted the B-17's (if PzB did not delete their bombing results before posting the CR's).

hi PzB... nice to see youre doing good. Good ol' Andy the Steamroller (Burma and Australia, lol). Saw your raids with KB - congrats. Where were Andy's carriers?

Well, i have to say that i predict some things correctly with Allied Edition and im sorry to see you struggle with that same things. Oh well...

im more interested if you have some news for STL.ol...(you can PM me if you like) im pretty suprised that this stock is under 125 last several weeks :)

RE: DISASTER IN BURMA!

Ground combat in Burma (as well as the extreme terrain modifiers)and 4E uberability are my main concerns in AE.
If there is something I would like to discuss with the devs it would be these areas.

Yes, we obviously disturbed the 2x6 B-17's - but 70 fighters should have that effect. Some fighters attacked after the bombing runs
but in total 80-85% of the fighters attacked or tried to attack.

Hi Pauk-San, will send you a PM!
Andy's carriers have been somewhat put out of action for some time. 1 Yorktown class carrier was bombarded and sunk in Sydney while its sisters both were torpedoed and
damaged by subs. The Lexington and Sara fled and are probably repaired by now. There is a British carrier fleet in the Indian Ocean; so Andy don't want to face the KB with
3-4 US carriers.
