RE: PM must be cut off

Post by MichaelU »

The CL/DD raiding force slips into PM in the dead of nightl. The captains' faces are ashen as they consider all the things that could go wrong. Is the harbour mined? Did the air search miss any waiting heavy cruisers.

But none of the above goes wrong. In fact, it's a turkey shoot. First the TF encounters 4AMs and 2xAKLs, and sends both to the bottom. Then it hits 2AMs and an xAP, and dispatches them as well, before slipping out to get away scot free. A good night for Japanese forces.

Here's our cruisers and destroyers pouring it in at 2,000 yards. They just couldn't miss at that range, it was a slaughter.

Then the strangest thing happened. A TF of 5 destroyers turned up 8 hexes south of Rabaul, just as our CVs turned up in Rabaul after a resupply run to Truk. About 60 Bettys and 40 Kates went in in various waves, torpedoing two of the destroyers.

What I don't understand though is why he would bring destroyers into range of a major airbase packed with Bettys. Perhaps he was looking for my carriers the hard way?

Things should get quiet now for the Japanese, we won't be trying anything fancy until we're ready to make the run into Milne Bay. With that in mind Mike has been packing Rabaul with fuel, supplies and combat troops. We'll be ready to make the run soon. Hopefully Mike will be able to give us some of his thinking here soon, when work and the call of turns gives him a break to update the AAR.

Nice! Surely the DDs were scouts for the CVs. Perhaps the enemy is trying to make sure your CVs are at Truk before he raids Rabaul with his flat tops?

That sure is one expensive way to find out. Why not send just 1 destroyer? Sending 5 risks losing 5.

Operation Stepping Stone

Post by MikeS4269 »

Aug 31st Orders

It's a big moment for Team Japan right now. Our first move towards taking Port Moresby is getting underway as I type this. The kick off is September 1st game time. Michael and I have been exchanging lengthy emails and text messages over the last two days, and if Arnhem has our phones tapped, he's got to know something is up.

I am nervous as nervous can be. I've never successfully pulled off an amphibious invasion in my WitP AE career. When I played this scenario vs. Michael the first time, he gobbled up both invasion fleets as they were inbound. When I tried it vs. the AI a few days ago for practice, it gobbled up my transports on the way in again.

Air attacks terrify me as the logistic / ground forces guy. Michael has done all he can to cover us on our way in. He has the CVs standing by, he has surface forces sweeping ahead, and he has all the air power he can stuff into Rabaul / Buna / Lae. (Not enough!)

Arnhem's air has been VERY quiet. I have not seen an aircraft from him for over a week. Lunga was empty during our last raid. He just now shows aircraft there.

I have dubbed this invasion “Operation Stepping Stone”. It seems appropriate, since from Milne Bay, we are halfway on our way to Port Moresby and will have the strangle hold on his supplies almost complete.

Fortune has definitely smiled upon the Japanese today. The night turn went by and I was like 'Gee, where is the bombardment that was supposed to be going in against Lunga.' Imagine my surprise when the sun rises red and rosy over the horizon and there they are, sitting off Lunga lining up for the perfect shoot. Then the Emilys spot a CV TF southeast of Lunga, and I think, here we go, it's all over for those boys.

Morning air attack phase and there's heavy cloud cover over Lunga, nothing is flying. Phew, I think, those boys will get out of there. But no, not being the type to question their orders, they go for the bombardment anyway, and the clouds clear in the afternoon. But only 16 dauntlesses come in, and none of them hit. The carriers are 9 hexes off Lunga [:D] What the hell those guys were thinking I don't know, but at least we know where the Allied carriers are, and they're not worrying about Milne Bay.

Below is a screenshot of the situation just before the launch of Operation Stepping Stone. Carriers are already out to provide cover for the transports, Yamato and Mutsu and gearing up for a bombardment of Milne Bay, Hiei and Kirishima are going to run in against PM. Let's hope Mike gets those transports moving on time, after a few hitches had set back the timetable somewhat.

Michael claims to be writing the day's AAR report as I type this - so I will limit mine to smaller things happening
on the fringes of Operation Stepping Stone.

[It's not like we are both hovering near the PCs all morning or anything...]

First day of Operation Stepping Stone passes exactly as we had hoped, very quietly. The transports are steaming towards their destination. The U.S. carriers sit in the same position 9 hexes southeast of Lunga. I'm going to send a CA, some CLs and DDs over to investigate a TF that has been hugging the coast of Australia, while the BBs head back to cover the landing. Fuel in Rabaul is becoming critical, we're down to 10,000 or so. I feel a long, quiet period coming up for the Japanese.

I normally don't like these simple streams of reports, but time is short to cover it all in its full glory.

My troops got their toe hold on Milne Bay. Then... his CVs show up a few hexes south with a big surface group next to them!

The APDs unloaded and I am rushing them back to RB at full speed. If need be, they can load the next SNLF group or emergency supplies.

The Armed Merchant Cruisers are much slower with their unloading and the xAKs are dinosaurs. All the troops are filing to the boats and rowing as fast as they can. It might be two or more days before we can be done.

Michael has his work cut out for him. He has some BIG decisions to make at this critical junction. I told him before I set sail:

"I'm going. I'll take that island. You get me there and keep me safe long enough to do so."

It's a TALL order in the face of such heavy resistance!

I'll let him share the rest (if his kids are willing).

Yep, the Portlands Road is a storming success, 2 SCs, 2 PGs and 2 hopefully loaded to the gills xAKs. I know the Allies have more transport than they know what to do with, so losing a few xAKs won't hurt them. But some fully loaded xAKs might.

Below is a pic prior to what could be the decisive carrier battle. I am going to the park now, where I will ignore my wife and two kids and stare into the distance with a thousand-yard stare as I ponder the miniscule positioning of my forces. I don't want to do this turn while the wife and kids are hounding me to get out of the house. I bet Yamamoto didn't have this sort of problem.

He knows where we have to be, and what we have to defend, which gives him a major advantage in terms of positioning. As I see it, his choices are:

Move two hexes north -- Our carriers will be six hexes apart, a classic carrier duel ensues. The major difference here is that my LBA will be sending in Bettys in support, and hopefully putting up some Zeros over the carriers as well.

Sweep east and north to get under his LBA from PM -- Probably what I'd do in his position. Sit six hexes off MB, with all your carrier aircraft set for six hex range, and let the transports have it. Lots of LR cap from PM covering the carriers. In which case my Bettys and Kates go in against heavily protected carriers, and I'm lucky to get a single hit, and lose a lot of torpedo bombers.

Sit 8 hexes off our carriers, and hope his LBA supports his dive bombers -- Extremely risky, if those dive bombers go in unescorted they'll get chewed up.

Just charge in to point blank range, and let the best man win -- Not much we can do if he does this, but it does bring him closer to our LBA and further from his.

Run -- least likely
