medium bombers work just fine, they really could take a lot of work off the heavy bombers... every turn I´m now pitying the decision to have these damned attack bombers in AE... Rabaul got a strong air defense (which doesn´t work at 10000ft of course) and attack bombers would be shot to pieces each time they would try to bomb (and miss) the base... just to think about the fact that I´m only getting this BS as replacement makes me

already have serious thoughts about ending the game as soon as I´m running out of medium level bombers...

here´s what finally made me smile during the turn... our bombers attack this Japanese frontline airfield and I was amazed to see Zeroes in the air which were diving on my escorts, taking out four of the Warhawks for the loss of two Zeroes... then the bombs started falling and we got message after message about enemy aircraft being damaged or destroyed... a short cheer was followed by the hope to see all my bombers airborne today...

and there we go, here comes the second wave... this time without any of the 75 Warhawks set to escort but a couple of Zeroes aren´t really a threat to this kind of strike... considering the weather we achieve a good hit rate and more and more enemy aircraft are destroyed on the ground... I was amazed about how many there really were at this level 2 airfield, looks like the field was of aircraft, considering the engine stacking limit I would call that airfield pretty much overstacked...

all hits achieved by the heavies, the attack bombers failed... btw, I have put pilots with grdbmb skill into these bombers, so skill isn´t the problem here as that´s the skill that should be used during bombing from 10000ft... hate this feature...

I love medium level bombers... that´s it for the day, guess that´s been a new record for destroyed aircraft on the ground in one day... more than a hundred enemy aircraft are reported destroyed today, Rainer was unlucky in not getting his aircraft airborne (due to whatever reason), but I guess even if they would have flown we still would have had the chance to see them fly in the morning while we bomb them in the afternoon... as the enemy and we are constantly doing hit and run attacks it was pure luck on my part to actually attack the right airfield today with his aircraft being grounded when my bombers show up...

nevertheless a nice morale boost for us, losses can be easily replaced by the enemy I guess as there should be enough in the pool with really light losses so far... seems like we´ve torched two full daitais of Helens, most of a Sally sentai and another Lily daitai... [:)]

as always, radar played no role at all...

round the clock bombing, invasion is going to go in soon... just like at Darwin, we sure have achieved far over 100 supply hits and the enemy was never able to ship in supplies for months, but I´m sure there won´t be any supply issues at Rabaul nor Darwin... this has already been seen at all the other bases that were cut off and bombed for months...

another six supply hits today... so many supply hits, so many enemy troops in Darwin, so many months no supply convoys but they won´t ever run out of supplies I guess...

note the two Nells being lost to my fighters again, we´re downed quite a lot of Nells lately, these are employed on nav search in the area between Darwin and Merauke... while they spot EVERY single convoy in the area (no matter if a single LST or a convoy with three dozen AKs), a couple of them are shot down each week...

From post #663 of this AAR "not sure why Rainer got Mavis´ at Rabaul... aren´t those patrols too valuable for the Japanese to be put on an airfield that is under constant air attacks?" ... Castor Troy

Have been reading this AAR from the beginning and came across your question from July 31 or so. I think it is because Mavis's can be used for air transport and often transports are used to extract fragments of each unit that could be destroyed.
The fragments are used to rebuild the unit later and, as I understand it, the opponent gets no VP for a destroyed unit if any fragment of it survives. That is worth risking a Mavis for IMO.

welcome aboard, nice to have another reader.

you are correct about the fragments but that still doesn´t make sense to put the Mavis´ at Rabaul because he could have also put them somewhere else that isn´t under constant attack. Mavis got a huge range so putting them into Rabaul doesn´t make any sense at all IMO.

You get VP's for destroyed squads and devices and not for destroyed LCU's. But otherwise you're correct.

Not sure. The above does not explain why the Mavis is stationed at a base under attack rather than at a base that is secure and the "pick up" function is used if fragments are pulled out of Rabaul or "transport" if fragments are brought to Rabaul.

To achieve the above-mentioned (valid) purpose, it is not necessary to base Mavis at Rabaul.

Thanks for the clarification on the VPs Kereguelen. That explains why so many players are always referring to the number of squads destroyed to measure the success of their ground combat.
C-T, I think you are wondering why the Mavis was left there knowing that you are blasting the AF each day. I don't know how much control he has over the timing of the trip to pick up fragments, but if the night flight to pick up fragments was delayed, it could be there during the day [as sometimes happens with bombardment TFs]. Or perhaps it just had some operational damage and couldn't leave until it was repaired?

AFAIK there is no night transport phase, transports always happen at the end of the day turn, means also after the morning and afternoon bombings. What I wanted to point out is (saving fragments is all ok and well) that he doesn´t have to place the Mavis´ at Rabaul to save fragments he could put them all around this area where they would be totally save, that´s why it doesn´t make sense to me to put them there when he knows that this base is bombed on a regular basis.

that´s exactly why I don´t understand why I constantly destroy Mavis´ at Rabaul... [:D]

we´ve got more bombers... just look at the wonderful results you get with medium bombers... the overall situation would look totally different if I would receive 30 B-25C per month instead of the useless 30 B-25D1... even when the patch is released and attack bombers will perhaps work better, they will still be chewed up by ANY flak at 100ft I guess... doing lots of training runs at the moment (three weeks ahead of the AAR) against more or less non existing Japanese flak but am losing B-25D1 daily to stone throwing Japanese... the enemy is using lots of AKs to ferry fuel around... one of the freighters full of fuel is sunk, the sub takes a direct hit and is knocked out, retiring to Brisbane... if a sub gets more than one kill on a patrol then this can be considered very well done... with the masses of Japanese xAK (don´t know exact numbers as I haven´t ever looked at the Japanese side in AE but I guess there are lots of them) I fear it will be a really tough job to reduce the fuel flow to Japan... starving Japan´s refinereys of oil could be done at some point I guess with the loss of more and more tankers but fuel...

not sure how the conclusion on the forum is about oil or fuel to Japan but Rainer is also moving oil to Japan because we´ve sunk several tankers full of oil...

here comes the rest of the bits and pieces, diving right from the start until the end of the engagement, the enemy had no chance at all... 17 enemy fighters were reported downed today for the loss of one Lightning... reason: the dive... the single Lightning was lost when we had no dive, all kills scored by the Lightning squadrons during their dive phase that more or less lasted for the whole engagements... hard to duplicate these kill ratios in WITP... and we complained about Corsairs taking out the enemy at 10:1? With the given Lightning replacement rate I can´t afford to lose more than one or two fighters though... this should slightly change in 6/43 with the P-38H arriving, giving us 40 of these fine aircraft per month, which is doubling the current rates... a month later will see the P-47 arriving in numbers but I guess these won´t see many enemy aircraft because Rainer already now stays out of range of any medium ranged fighters, my Corsairs perhaps have shot down one or two dozen enemy aircraft... only the Lightnings got the range to engage the enemy...

18 x F4U-1 Corsair sweeping at 36800 feet
16 x Spitfire Vc Trop sweeping at 37000 feet *

these missed the bombers... missing the bombers is a good trick to get a better "coordinated" sweep though, so in fact I think it´s a better way NOT to set his fighters to the same alt as the bombers because either they escort (and do what you´ve ordered them to do) or they do a sweep at their ceiling which leads to far better results than seeing them on escort anyway...

lost the turn for the 1st, going on with the 2nd June... one more month until I get P-47 replacements, two full squadrons in use already with 23 fighters in the pool from reinforcement squadrons...

important day in the war today, CV Essex arrived at Balboa today... she´ll meet three CVE, a BB and halve a dozen DD to move to Australia, will give us another 100 Hellcats for our carrier force...

our two damaged CVs still need 4-5 months for repairs, one is sitting in Sydney, the other one in Cape Town... in the next couple of months we´re going to get several Essex class CV, CVL and CVE. If I don´t screw up something and manage to avoid to lose another carrier battle then we´re going to have a really big carrier fleet at the front in Octobre. I´m going to keep these together as it´s all about massing force and my opponent is also doing this, so the next engagement probably sees something like 600-700 Japanese carrier based ac vs. 900-1000 Allied carrier based ac. And I won´t move out of LBA range (bomber range) with my next move so it definetely will be bloody again, hope this time the enemy will suffer...

deciding not to attack is one thing, taking a direct hit is another... if subs aren´t spotted and they decide not to attack, I really wonder why they are then attacked all the time... oversight IMO... many times, the TF (that isn´t attacked and hasn´t spotted the sub already) shouldn´t even notice that there´s a sub IMO...

Aircraft Attacking:

17 x F4U-1 Corsair sweeping at 36800 feet

now that we´ve set our fighters on max alt, they lose the bombers as often as having them at the same alt... but now they do strato sweeps then instead of 10000ft "we get bounced by the enemy" sweeps...

Naval Attack: 1 x 22in Mk 13 Torpedo
6 x Beaufort VIII launching torpedoes at 200 feet
Naval Attack: 1 x 22in Mk 13 Torpedo

the enemy moved in a small surface combat TF and once again the movement routine screwed up the sprint to the target, the enemy TF did not move to Bathurst during the night to engage my barges but stopped one hex off the target hex and stayed there during the day... it´s the same flaw that is still there in fast transport missions which has become more seldom since the patch but it´s still existing... naval movement still seems to have quite some trouble... torpedo bombers from the nearby bases launched (in far too small numbers considering what I´ve got in the area) but didn´t score any hits... one of the Beauforts was written off...

I really don´t like it when I see coconut eating, stone throwing Japanese cut off units being able to put up heavy flak fire against the attack bombers... attacking at 100ft is just insane and totally off and I can´t see why it should be better after the attack bomber fix with the next patch because attack bombers will then always attack at 100ft and will be eaten alive by flak... at Tulagi there are two Japanese mini units with some 13mm MGs and they usually shoot up my attack bombers that their morale is pummeled in no time, not to even talk about the losses we take... attacking at 100ft doesn´t work in the game, not at all comparable with real life attack bomber attacks IMO... I´m going to wait for the patch (got some 250 medium level bombers left) to have a look if the fix will then lead to attack bombers actually working, but I´ve got serious doubts that attacking at 100ft is a possibility in the game... all you can attack on 100ft is an EMPTY base...

now that was a surprisng one... CV Junyo and some CVE friends were parked at Ambon, pretty dangerous to park in range of my long range heavy bomber squadrons... also here, only halve a squadron decided to launch against the most important targets in the game... 6 out of 36 bombers that were set to attack, none of them attacked in the morning... the bombers meet 29 fighters on Cap (not really a lot, would I decide to park my carriers here I would definetely put up more Cap) and 50% of the bombers are downed before being able to drop their load... all bombs missed, but I guess we scare the enemy away...

two things are really amazing here, Rainer puts his carriers in range of my heavy bombers and CV Junyo is not only not sunk but already 100% patched up and combat ready... CV Junyo was hit by several 1000lb bombs during our carrier engagement and was reported sunk for months but that obviously wasn´t true... while my two damaged carriers still need up to 5 months of repairs, the enemy carrier already is combat ready... [:(] makes our defeat (while having a superior force) in the carrier clash even worse as we only sunk CV Hiyo and all damaged IJN carriers are already at the front... we´ve lost a CV, halve a dozen CVE and three BBs... what a mess... it also speaks for Japanese damage control...

this isn´t KB though, so it seems the Japanese are covering this front with a secondary CV fleet while KB probably is somewhere further East (not in Truk, probably Peleliu)...

nearly as amazing as putting carriers into range of my heavy bombers is putting precious tankers in range... only a small tanker but nevertheless something that makes me happy... oil aboard and heavy fires... going to be a hard task to save that ship... we pay with one bomber lost A2A and another one written off... these bombers are as precious as the lownav trained crews...
