So, the British defence minister Liam Fox has called for a ban on the upcoming Medal of Honor game because you can play as the Taliban in multiplayer.

Now, an Italian-American lobbying group has denounced the new game Mafia II as "racist nonsense" because the Mafia members in it are... Italian-American![X(]

My conclusions:

- Liam Fox needs to get back to actually doing his job, i.e. making short-sighted budget cuts in the British military.

- All lobbying groups everywhere need to be banned.

- I'm definitely buying both Medal of Honor and Mafia II.

While I totally agree with your opinions, and go along with conclusions 1 and 3, if you've got it all out of your system now, we might want to change directions away from a course that might be seen as "political", back to our regularly scheduled programming (WITP AE). In that spirit I ask, "Sunk or scuttled?". [:D]

Don't encourage him Termy [:-] The further the politicans stay away from my job the better [:D] Obviously UK politics are a political topic for me so I'll leave it there. [;)]

It won't get banned, and all he's doing is creating free publicity for the game. It doesn't bother me that you can play as the Taliban and they've shot at some of my friends, given the chance they lob a rocket at me as well. I can play as Japan in WitP as well, or the Germans or Russians in plenty of games and they were not particularly nice people either.

I know this was a borderline political no-no, but this sort of thing reminds me of an old quote from Benito Mussolini, speaking of one of his generals:

"Here's another general with whom I can't get angry, because I despise him".

Anyway, I'm buying those games; just pre-purchased Mafia II, which will be released in Europe on Friday. I don't understand why games are still released on different dates in the States and Europe...[&:]

Moving on... There's a documentary series running on Danish TV at the moment, about the Roman occupation of Britain. Part 2 tonight.

Rome was only able to occupy Britain due to Celtic defense cuts.

Take heart, it's September soon! And there was much rejoicing.

That might very well be, but there's always a chance that Summer will give Autumn a miss and go straight into Winter.

Go to Orkney! Everything from pre-historic stone rings to the remains of the RAF and RN bases at Scapa Flow. And wrecks to dive on too if you're into that.

BRRRR..... cold wreck diving! Bermuda, or Truk or Kawejalin would be probably a lot more pleasant. [:D]
Brother Steve-a heartfelt 'Roger' on that one. I did my certification diving in a quarry in West Virginia in a winter snowstorm. Hawaii or the Caribbean was infinitely superior.

Why didn't they try to ban Red Lightning where you could play the Third Shock Army? To whom do I write a letter of complaint?

Red Lightning (S.S.I. 1989) was an operational level game covering a hypothetical Soviet invasion of western Europe sometime in the early '90's. There were a number of interesting features in this game:

News reports of events, including updates on the political climate as the campaign progressed.
Special operations and an off-map North Atlantic campaign. You could redeploy some of your light forces to the Iceland and Norway campaigns. Send too little and the naval war might not go your way. Send too much and say good bye to Denmark.
Weather forecasts. Accurate for a day or two, not so accurate beyond that. Bad weather interfered with air operations and orbital recce capability. Temperature and Humidity modified chemical weapons effects.
640x200 16 color EGA graphics. This was rather advanced for the time.
ST and Amiga versions had mouse support. The DOS version missed out on mouse support due to the requirement that it run on a 384K Tandy. Things have changed...

We sure are spoiled nowadays. [:D]

Heard a funny joke on Slashdot: What's the difference between a sysadmin and a monkey? Monkey's get free bananas and can fondle themselves in public.

I've always like those hypothetical NATO vs Warsaw Pact games. They're a nice change from WW2, we could do with a few more of that sort of game.

I've never heard of Red Lightning, it sounds like it was far more ambitious (and well designed) than the majority of games about these days.

Looking forward to The Red Pill when it finally turns up http://www.warfaresims.com/?page_id=1101

I used to sneer at early PC versions of SSI games in comparison to the Atari in terms of looks. I was confident that this "IBM" thingy would NEVER catch on.

Good thing i'm not into the Stock Market..... [:D]
