The mighty Dragon is back indeed!

Proudly we announce another war has been declared to the Allied powers, with all its hostilities already underway.
Our Southern striking force is about to be gathering in full strength, but even the advance echelons accomplished some great victories yet. So the entire Solomons are in Imperial hands, as Nevea and the Louisiade Archipel too. New Guinea only holds remnants of their former occupants and will be swept clear of them shortly. By May 30 we invaded Port Moresby without own losses against almost no eveident opposition. Only a few Aussie soldiers along with their sick civilian comrades were found sitting in the backyard of the mainstreet which is littered with craters anyway. Despite their regretful situation they enjoyed a very calm and cheerful mood, having plenty of rum available. But we were shocked to see many human bones scattered in this very vicinity..............

However, Imperial staff will shift its HQ down south by the end of June 1942 in order to conduct the next thrust of war plan RG02-3A... The means to launch a full scale attack will arrive soon at the Truk Atoll.

We won´t conceal some kinda agreement we´ve made with our opponent. The operative carrier strength is limited to 200 A/C on flattops in the theatre at one given time. So this struggle should turn out to become pretty intense.

Stay tuned....

Allied Command - May '42 - Monthly Report

Post by a1981stingray »

A Monthly Report of Weekly Progress Updates sent to the Allied Commander's Director of Operations located at Pearl Harbor.

SOPAC HQ - SEA
MAY 1, 1942- - -MAY 7, 1942
The first round of ships [combat and freighter] have arrived in New Caledonia. Those designated as Fast Transport have moved the construction ENG units to Luganville to build Fortifications. In addition, the remaining Fast Transports have moved the Americal Division to Luganville.

The massive AK/AP freighters formed into several supply transport task forces escorted by 1 PG, 6 SC, and 3 MSW units. The extra escort ships should reduce any chances of IJN subs in the shipping lanes as they make supply runs to New Hebrides Islands.

The USN Fast Attack Air Combat Task Force commanded by the new Vice-Admiral Mitscher is out at sea conducting air combat and general quarters alert drills. It would be great to know if the extra training, for Allied Damage Control in fighting fires and repairing ship damage, pays off or if it's just a big waste of time.

The Lexington and Yorktown have max escort combat ships comprising of heavy cruisers, light cruisers, and destroyers. In addition to Task Force 201, TF 202 consisting of all destroyers and destroyer mine-sweepers, will provide anti-sub warfare.

SOPAC HQ - AIR
MAY 1, 1942- - -MAY 7, 1942
PBY Patrols from New Caledonia and New Hebrides Islands report no IJN activity in the area. The nightly IJN run down "The Slot" from Bougainville Island is very effective. The Marines Fighter squadrons located in Noumea have relocated to Luganville for Combat Air Patrols.

SOPAC HQ - LAND
MAY 1, 1942- - -MAY 7, 1942
Allied coast watchers in The Solomon Islands report IJN Nav Gsn units capturing Russell Island, Manu, Irau, Lunga, Taivu, and Nevea. Additional reports show IJ troops building bases to form a perimeter of bases from Guadalcanal to Buka.

SOPAC HQ - SEA
MAY 8, 1942- - -MAY 15, 1942
A few IJN Subs have penetrated our escort ships and crippled or sunk a couple of transports. More ships have arrived and another Transport Task Force was organized to offset the loss of shipping capacity.

SOPAC HQ - AIR
MAY 8, 1942- - -MAY 15, 1942
A few IJN Search planes operating from Shortland Islands were spotted over Luganville. A possible photo recon was taken.

SOPAC HQ - SEA
MAY 16, 1942- - -MAY 23, 1942
The supplies are flowing into New Hebrides Islands. The Allied Bases are reporting fast progress on the Fortifications and will soon start on Airfields.

SOPAC HQ - LAND
MAY 16, 1942- - -MAY 23, 1942
The Allied code breakers have intercepted several IJN radio communications back to Tokyo. The letters LG and EF, along with words like bunkers and bulldozers were identified in the translated message. The top brass in the Allied Intelligence Department have been scratching their heads on this for a few days until another series of IJN messages were intercepted. The letters BFD were part of another message, defined as "bonfires and beaches", but Allied Command have dismissed this as false intel reports.

SOPAC HQ - SEA
MAY 24, 1942- - -MAY 31, 1942
More freighters arrived in Noumea and set to continual supply for the New Hebrides Islands. The IJN subs continue to stalk the shipping lanes to and from these island bases. Several reports of sub sightings and attacks with some near misses or hits on escort ships and freighters. More ships arriving in a few days to replace those losses.

SWPAC HQ - SEA
MAY 1, 1942- - -MAY 7, 1942
A Fast Transport Task Force was formed for a special mission to be completed before the end of May. All other ships have reported to SOPAC HQ for all operations. The only SEA reports from SWPAC HQ may be a few Submarine TF operations, but will probably be forwarded to SOPAC HQ.

SWPAC HQ - AIR
MAY 1, 1942- - -MAY 7, 1942
All air units have been set to 50% training, Naval Search, or Supply Transport. Some Air units have been relocated to better airfields while 1 unit is set to recon Papua New Guinea. While pilot fatigue can be a problem for training new recruits, the squadrons will be set to mission rotation to allow pilots to rest. This should reduce operational losses.

SWPAC HQ - LAND
MAY 1, 1942- - -MAY 7, 1942
All Land Combat Units have been given relocation orders. New Guinea Force to Cooktown, 7th Australian Division to Cairns, and 3rd Australian Division to Townsville. The 41st Division will be in Rockhampton and 38th Division will hold Brisbane. All available ENG units will move from Brisbane to Rockhampton to assist in expanding the base. Once completed the ENG forces will move to Townsville and expand, then to Cairns.

SWPAC HQ - SEA
MAY 8, 1942- - -MAY 15, 1942
Several IJN subs were spotted operating in the shipping lanes from Australia to Papua New Guinea by search planes from Cairns and Townsville. There were several IJN SS TF attempts to put a long lance into the Fast Transport Task Forces out of Brisbane. The FT TF is currently picking up the units in Port Moresby and delivering them to Australia. Lots of IJN activity on the North Shores of PNG. An Allied Destroyer was lost a few miles from the port of Cairns due to lack of anti-sub warfare patrols.

MAY 8, 1942- - -MAY 15, 1942
SWPAC HQ - AIR
All air units have been evacuated from Port Moresby, except for a few C-47 Dakota Transports that had too much damage to fly off the runway. IJN has launched several Recon flights from Shortland Island to see Allied activities of Port Moresby.

MAY 8, 1942- - -MAY 15, 1942
SWPAC HQ - LAND
All units have been evacuated from Port Moresby. The New Guinea Kanga Force from Wau has been ordered to Port Moresby for pick up via the Fast Transport Task Force.

MAY 16, 1942- - -MAY 23, 1942
SWPAC HQ - SEA
The Fast Transports have been ordered back to Noumea for reassignment as Surface Combat, ASW, and CV TF escorts.

MAY 16, 1942- - -MAY 23, 1942
SWPAC HQ - LAND
Lots of IJN transports have delivered troops to Kiriwina, Buna, Gili-Gili, Rossel Island, Dobadura, and Port Moresby.

MAY 16, 1942- - -MAY 23, 1942
SWPAC HQ - AIR
Lots of missions being flown and a couple of Fighter-Bomber squadrons have arrived in Brisbane along with a squadrons of Bombers.

MAY 24, 1942- - -MAY 31, 1942
SWPAC HQ - SEA
Lots of IJN Naval activity spotted around Gili-Gili to Port Moresby.

MAY 24, 1942- - -MAY 31, 1942
SWPAC HQ - LAND
Allied Troops have arrived at their destinations, while more troops arrived at Brisbane.

MAY 24, 1942- - -MAY 31, 1942
SWPAC HQ - AIR
Bombers from Cooktown, Cairns, and Townsville continue to pound the Port Moresby airfield, port facilities, and ground troops. I am not sure if the IJA will be able to take this beating for another several weeks. These airfields continue to receive more bombers, fighters, supplies, and aviation support units... The results of bombing missions is really good for pilot training and IJA casualties.

NOTES:
The evacuation of Papua New Guinea:
The troops that were stationed at Buna and Gili-Gili failed to report in for several weeks during the month of April. Several attempts were made to contact them but no response. A search party and a few recon planes were ordered to find out what happened. The group failed to report back, but allied search planes reported sightings of unknown indigenous tribes at each base as tribal warriors shot arrows from their bows and hurled spears at the planes as they circled overhead... Photo recon showed a large fire pit and cooking pot in the base camps. It should be noted that the photo recon could not distinguish if the cannibals had captured Allied or Japanese personnel. It appears that they were being tied to a stake and slowly rotisserie over the fire pit while a couple more were being dunked into the cooking pot.

Additional photos were also processed, along with the recon's photo reel, showing Port Moresby's new construction of beach cabanas, baseball diamonds, a large building with the letters RUM-HALL on the roof, a bath house with water tower, a few structures of unknown function, and other possible nonessential military buildings. So it was therefore in the best interest to evacuate all the PNG bases. It might be best to have proper Command Staff located in PNG.

It should also be noted that the Allied Troops stationed at Port Moresby had been requisitioning more rum to be delivered and were having late night beach parties... And this comes from the intercepted radio transmissions of IJN Search plane pilots as they flew over Port Moresby stating that the Allied troops were sleeping on the beach in the afternoon and some were waving rum bottles as the IJN pilots took photos, and Allied Anti-Aircraft Artillery were silent during the fly over....

Post by RGIJN »

first real blood... Our famous CarDiv 5 along with CVL SHOHO dashed down to the Hebrides to catch the enemy pants down. We bombed several convoys at the piers of Luganville that were seen heading north from the port of Noumea some days ago.

Several AKs plus two MSWs, along with at least five escorts sunk instantly. Own losses are minimal, only one Nakajima B5N attack plane (Kate) and one Aichi bomber (D3A Val) are missing.

On the other side of the map, the allies keep on losing at least 2...5 bomber A/C per days in their ill-fated air "campaign" against PM. In the meantime the Kanga force was driven out to LeaLea.

the remnants of the enemy transport fleet made a delightful view for my battleship commanders. 410mm guns (along others and torpedoes of course) made short work of that poor gathering of freighters....

war report, as released by IGHQ

Post by RGIJN »

Mid-June 1942, Imperial HQ Southern Areas at Rabaul, Command bunker #15

Operations gain zip & momentum finally. Air, naval and army assets are gathering for the execution of RG02-3A. An anticipated major battle near the Midway islands failed to take place since this important spot was already captured by our superior forces. So IGHQ at Tokyo is going to shift most of the reinforcements down south now.

The enemy keeps on bombing PM, resulting in nothing else than loosing precious A/C - ten B17s and more than threetimes this number of B25s & B26s are reported lost by now.
Furthermore the Allied submarines are busy mining the approaches of our main anchorages.

Ten B-17!! [X(] Thats pretty hard. I remember that B-17 have a very low replacement rate.I used them for key operations only....

Where's the RUM???

Post by a1981stingray »

Monthly Update for June 1942

NOTE:
to reduce the amount of vital Intel from falling into the enemy's hands [ that would be RGIJN ] the Allied Commanders are to provide brief reports, in coded transmissions back to Washington, so the Allied Propaganda Office may properly publish and broadcast the facts.

ORDERS FROM COMMANDER IN CHIEF USN ALLIED FORCES
A typical Allied Commander will hold their forces back until late 1942 or March of 1943 before committing to an invasion north into PNG or the Solomon Islands. Several new Base Force Commanders transferred into strategic locations so there is a "Shortage on Rum". It appears that a strict diet of "eggs and fishes" are being fed to the Fleets operating in hostile waters...

SOPAC HQ - NEW CALEDONIA

Luganville continues to be build fortifications, now it's at level 7. The airfield remains at level 2. The Port is now being upgraded from level 2, and is now at level 4.
The Americal Division continues to eat supplies at a rapid rate. Some Wildcats, Airacobra, and PBY Catalina squadrons transferred in from Noumea. The CAP and Training rotation remains at 50%. The PBY Catalina long range naval search patrols remain at 100%.

Efate Port Vila continues to be build fortifications, now it's at level 5. The airfield remains at level 3. The Port is now being upgraded from level 3, and is now at level 5.
The PBY Catalina long range naval search patrols remain at 100%.

Noumea continues to expand the base to accommodate more troops, aircraft, and ships. Several Bomber squadrons arrived and were placed on long range naval search patrols at 100%.

SOPAC reports that moral is high, fatigue is low, and experience is increasing rapidly.

SOPAC ENEMY CONTACT REPORTS
The IJN Nav Gsn moved into a tiny little island approx 150 nautical miles north of Luganville.... Several attempts were made at Luganville to create havoc and disrupt efforts of the Base Forces. A few Allied escort ships and transports were lost when IJN BBTFs arrived late in the evening. PBY Catalina squadrons failed to report any IJN activity in the area and a CVTF arrived to deliver some "shells and fishes" on the troops... In addition to search planes failing to spot IJN, several IJN subs lurk in the shipping lanes between Noumea and New Hebrides.

SWPAC HQ - AUSTRALIA

Not much to report:
All Base Forces currently expanding every Fortification, Port, and Airfield. Troops continue to arrive in Brisbane and are sent "up the road" to form up with their Division HQs. A couple of pesky IJN subs lurk near Cairns and Townsville sticking a few fishes into the transports as they come and go from ports along the coast. The Allied ASW patrols are inexperienced. Every Fighter squadron is on a CAP / Training rotation of 50%. All Bomber squadrons are on a Naval Search / Training rotation of 50%. There was a continual bombing campaign against enemy troops occupying PM, but those force appear to have pulled out to Buna. Allied Recon planes soon to fly and gather intel prior to another bomber raid.

USN
The Allied Fleet has been very busy moving at flank speed to interdict the IJN fleets, but to always appear to be 1 turn too late to be on station. CVTFs split Yorktown and Lexington into 2 groups so that they might be better suited to raid the transports coming and going from GG and PM. The commanders failed to launch attacks so the CVTF was put back together and sent towards Lunga and Gavigama.

This concludes the June Report. stay tuned for further Allied Propaganda Broadcasts of jumbled, garbled, and unintelligible ramblings from the Radio Room. Next broadcast very soon....

Both enemy flattops are deemed wrecks and we assume they sunk already or will do so in the very next future. Own losses: marginal - CVL RYUJO is badly hit and we are not sure if this vessel will make port with 90+/48 damage...

It Is True

Post by a1981stingray »

Hey Joe, look over there - a flight of birds... Hey Mikey check out the sharks down there..... "This is flight leader - Will you stop the chatter!!! Imperial Japanese Flattops spotted due north approximately 90 miles!!! Form UP!!! Look Sharp!!!

It is very true that the green pilots of the USN in May of 1942 have no skills or anything that might be called experience in dive bombing an IJN carrier or a single escort ship in the entire IJN Flotilla....

Out of all the IJN ships available to strike at, the USN squadron commanders decided to go all out, and try to break past the swarm of Zeros and AA from every Jap Ship to land a couple of bombs on the deck of 1 light carrier.

the chase

Post by RGIJN »

of course our fleet set to chase the remnants of the enemy... and they ran into a surprise night encounter with a bold US DD force. We estimate about the same number of destroyers was lost on both sides. Our battlewagon HARUNA was unable to turn the battle into a slaughter.

At dawn the A/C took off but failed to attack the enemy carrier wrecks, raiding other major capital ships instead.
And our Type 1 "Rikko" torpedo bombers (G4M Betty) decided to fly all the way down to Noumea attacking some minor vessels, sinking a MSW. Dunno why they went that far south considering plenty targets close to their base... Weird.

Some success was added by our submarines, which harrassed the shipping off Australia.

RE: the chase

Post by a1981stingray »

Torpedoes in the water!!! Nighttime Surface Combat at 9000 yards........ this was typical view of 3 SCTFs consisting on USN DDs, CAs, and a few CLs that happen to escort the CVTFs as they slipped beneath the waves to a watery grave - Yorktown and Lexington are no more but they took a beating and kept on sailing until the last....
IJN got a bloody nose, but no broken bones....

RE: the chase

Post by RGIJN »

again, tonite our fleets met mid-ocean. We got the right calculation of the enemy´s speed & direction and so we clashed "the old way". Six times!!! Looks like the entire enemy navy was out here... However, many enemy cruisers and other vessels were destroyed under the moon-lit sky tonight.

And (opposite to US propaganda) at least the USN CV-2 LEXINGTON did not go down - yet.... So we wanna depict the most interesting night "duel" here:

Image

of course "Lady Lex" sunk instantly after heavy pummeling...
