The Caine Mutiny

I have seen the movie several times but I never knew it was a book until last weekend when I saw a hardcover on sale for 50 cents at a very old book store last weekend.

I'm now at the part where Willie found out that the Caine left before he arrived at his call of duty port. So far it's nothing like the movie.

Has anyone both read the book and seen the movie?

I've read the book once and seen the movie 7 or more times besides the added details of Willie's & May's life I thought the movie & book were similar.  [:)]

Yes, and I actually read the book before I saw the movie. (I'm not sure that's the right way to do it -- movies tend to be disappointing once you've read the book.) The book covers a much longer time period than the movie, but yes, there will be a "mutiny" and a court-martial.

If I remember the epilouge from The Caine Mutiny the captain is loosely based on a USN destroryer captain hated by the ships crew.  I read Halsey's Typhoon and the same captain when pulled from the sea after his destroyer foundered had an axe with him. [:D]

Unless I'm mistaken, you date yourself to younger than 40-50 (as I am), since Herman Wouk was a pretty big name among American popular novelists. I knew this only because of my parents, and the two giant miniseries from his novels "The Winds of War" and "War and Remembrance." All three were great books, as I recall. The "Caine Mutiny" movie was excellent, though the remake with Robert Hays about twenty years ago was too difficult to watch without thinking of him in "Airplane!" (Wow. Poor Robert Hays has almost nothing on his Wikipedia page, not even a photo. Perhaps that should be my weekend project.)

I am 43! I'm at the part where the sailor is finished with his court martial and Queeq is in a rage because there was no dishonorable discharge.

I have read the book and seen the movie, but not recently. I remember I enjoyed both. Having Humphrey Bogart in the movie qualified it as a classic. [;)]

I've read The Caine Mutiny, Winds of War, and War and Remembrance.  It has been so long ago that I read The Caine Mutiny, I don't remember if the book was similar to the movie.  I have seen the movie. 

I liked all three books, but have never read anything else by him.  I am unsure why.

I finished it last night. Dang, I read that whole thing in a little over a day. It's been years since a book grabbed me like that.  I love the disclaimer at the beginning saying that it's a work of fiction, not based on real life and how he had to write it because of people making conspiracies out of nothing.

And to think I found it in a cardboard box in an old bookstore for 50 cents.  I got the entire Will Durant Stroy of Civilization hard cover series for 50 cents a book too.  I wish I could have recorded my wife's "NOT MORE BOOKS!" expression.  [:D]
