the third squadron flying P-38E and F... same as above, dive kill... this turn really saw the dive it´s powerful and uggly face... all three sweeps got the endless dive, we shot down more than two dozen enemy fighters for not even a single Lightning damaged... yeah, the dive isn´t the most powerful piece in the routine... and how do you get the dive? By flying higher than the enemy... how do you get the never ending dive? By having more aircraft than the enemy...

and here comes the rest of no 1 and 2 sweeps, having the dive ending here after the initial passes, resulting in three enemies downed during the dive and one Lightning downed and another two damaged AFTER the dive... no, it´s not the dive that is the most important thing in fighter vs fighter... for sure not... trust those that tell you it isn´t... trust them...

and nothing but a code rework helps... [:(]

note that 6 out of 8 losses today were from transport missions, which again supports the statement that it is more dangerous to fly a transport mission or a nav search mission than to actually fly a fighter on a long range combat mission against enemy opposition...

here comes the second squadron, also of course losing 1/3 of the fighters on the way to the target... funny that this happens all the time, that´s how it must have been in real life...

I think a big issue here is in real life they very rarely flew in thunderstorms at all.

well, it´s not different at all in CLEAR sky... no difference, as can be seen in 25 more pages of this AAR...

but I would be the last one to complain about a working weather model [;)]

Thats true but we get far to many bad weather strikes maybe the engine is just rounding it so you get bad weather effects in good because the weather on strike coordination ( as opposed to combat results) isnt modelled well :-) So maybe you need to compain about the weather modelling on stroke coordination. If fine better coordination if severe much worse.

to be honest, I can´t accept any explanation why sweep (non) coordination always looks the same, no matter what weather or if you kill a chicken or not. It´s just plain silly that 2 or 3 fighters of each squadron get "lost" in 98% of the time. Plain silly IMO and surely not realistic.

Strikes getting lost? Fine with me. Strikes not being able to locate the target? Fine with me. Being worse or impossible in bad weather? Fine with me if the weather model would work. Losing 2 or 3 fighters of each squadron 98% of the time during sweeps? Totally stupid.

Rabaul btw has a really strong AA defense, with 3 AA units and halve a dozen base forces... now compare the damage this AA defense does against my mediums at 10,000ft with the damage done by two Japanese units that have been cut off and bombed for months with a handful of 13mm MGs... 100ft attacks DON´T work, no matter if attack bomber or not...

better get rid of all attack bombers in your new PBEMs...

deciding not to attack is one thing, taking a direct hit is another... if subs aren´t spotted and they decide not to attack, I really wonder why they are then attacked all the time... oversight IMO... many times, the TF (that isn´t attacked and hasn´t spotted the sub already) shouldn´t even notice that there´s a sub IMO...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

No, I like the sub game very much but this pisses me to no end. Japanese had crap for ASW and many times were not able to locate the attacking subs even after the sub sank a ship or two. But in game, they always locate the sub and attack it and this is what makes Japanse ASW so uber. So far, I am not losing too many subs but I got a crapload heading home for repairs. The reality is that Japanses ASW should be pitiful. Perhaps better from WITP but not enough.

You kind of have to accept some AE reality as you play along. The one sobering reality is that the US is not going to have a dramatic effect on Japan with their submarines. They are fun and do sink some ships but forget about choking off supply to the HI.

IJN ASW in this game is pityful in sinking my subs (of course far more will be sunk than in real life) but like I´ve mentioned before, I guess I´m having knocked out at least one sub per turn. It´s a huge step forward from WITP though when a Japanese player usually has made Allied subs 100% useless with Sallies and Helens sinking subs all around.

Agree that my subs probably won´t be able to really hurt the Japanese economy, even though I guess they will be felt. All hopes are for 10/43 now.

enemy subs are hunting my LCTs, a single 8cm hit is usually enough to sink one... but with the ammo routines, the sub usually runs out of shells after having sunk one of the LCTs so this should keep losses to subs at a minimum... how many shells did a sub carry? 200?

nice to see a tanker hit but the sub takes a hit in return and ends up with 42 flt damage, heading home... hard to achieve more than one kill per sub/patrol when the subs most often end up at least moderately damaged...

our carriers again give away their position as they try to escort a LAND BASED STRIKE... god how I hate that... I´m no friend of the way how the coordination routine works in general but seeing carrier based fighters trying to escort land based strikes whenever they are in range is totally off... note that we have set the Hellcats to max alt now, this should give us the dive at least...

that´s one of the strikes the Hellcats tried to escort... the enemy of course gets free intel of our carriers being in range again... all you can do is stand down your strikes if your carriers are nearby and you don´t want to see your enemy getting to know that immedietely...

first sweep only met the usual 1-3 fighters, second sweep meets considerable more fighters... most of them are shot down or damaged easily during the dive, the dive ends and one of the Lightning is downed... it´s the dive that makes the difference... with the dive the Lightnings always achieve a 10:1+ on average, without the dive they get a 1:1 or 2:1 against the Japanese fighters... no, the dive sure isn´t the most important factor...

after Hanoi fell we´ve ordered two Corps to cross the river into Haiphong but due to the fact that "follow unit" doesn´t work anymore we had to set them both to march and of course they didn´t cross the river at the same time... we´ve been lucky that one of them did the trick as the enemy only had this low av fortress left at Haiphong...

quite a lot of shots fired at our invasion but not much damage done... all troops are 100% prepped, got the 18th Brit division, a NZ bgd and another combat eng rgt in reserve at Milne Bay, but not prepped enough to be sent in right after the first wave... but if we get seriously bogged down we could send them in in a couple of weeks, with 25 enemy troops spotted at Rabaul I expect to see serious fighting going on for a really long time... but I can definetely not afford to prep more than four divisions for a single target, even if it´s an important one like Rabaul... so far, we have only identified 4th div as real worthy enemy combat unit...

also the second midget sub has been located and sunk by the escorts of our BB combat group that is covering the landing... the carriers are standing 45 miles off the coast with lots of bombers and fighters in the air to engage any enemy air or sea assets but I don´t expect anything to show up... not any real airfields in range for the enemy and sending in KB against 600 land based ac plus all my available carriers with Hellcats aboard would not be bold but rather stupid... therefore I don´t expect KB to show up and the invasion fleet will steam away from Rabaul tomorrow anyway again as the APA and LST make it possible to unload in one day with enough supplies to fight for weeks... I LOVE THEM!

everything that has been available in the area was sent in today... even though that Rainer didn´t spot any TFs of my invasion, the stupid coordination routine made sure that Hellcats tried to escort LBA strikes yesterday, therefore revealing our operation... all you can do is either stand your LBA down (and therefore giving your enemy a chance to patch up his airfield and fly in 300 enemy aircraft) or you could also limit the range of the carrier based Hellcats to 0 and then perhaps end up with KB popping up and your bombers launching unescorted at the enemy in 6 hexes range... carrier based fighters trying to escort land based bombers...

You really should get the chance to give orders on who escorts who... either you set a specific target or set the fighters on "naval escort"... but having them do just whatever the "smart" routine thinks would be good is not something that makes me happy...

only one enemy division but in total a real strong force that is defending Rabaul... despite being cut off and bombed for months, I don´t expect the enemy to have supply problems at any time... even though my units show up as fragments, everything has been unloaded and when checking the units, they all got their normally assigned commander...

great! You better check every single unit on the map every turn because you never know where exactly the movement routine sends them to if you set a target hex... this armored unit was set to move North to the hex West of Chiang Mai and what is the unit doing? Moving and therefore shock attacking into the hex North of Moulmein where we´ve got that big Japanese Army... the unit of course is shred to pieces and is DESTROYED!!!!! [:@][:@][:@] Good idea to move into this hex... and no, the path through the expected movement hexes was NOT blocked...

Haiphong Fortress surrendered... rest of the Chinese Army is now flooding into Vietnam and towards Thailand... expect some Japanese counter invasions along the coast and surely a Japanese ground counter offensive building up in South China, probably around Canton... I think the Japanese will then focus against the Nanning area to cut off the supply lines for our Army marching into Thailand and Vietnam... but that will take time, until then we should have brought enough supplies into Vietnamese bases to support our Army for some time and we of course hope to break through with the Western Allied Armies in the Moulmein - Chiang Mai area which will then result in enough supplies also for the Chinese if they get cut off to the East but can further advance to link up with the British/Indian and Australian forces...

we´ve spotted two enemy subs moving into the area yesterday and not surprising anymore, one of the sub of course gets yet another shot at one of my carriers... unlike in the past, this time the sub missed though... DD McCalla succesfully engaged the second class IJN sub and probably killed it... more than three dozen DDs in this hex and the sub still managed to attack the CV...

the enemy was able to build a Maginot line at Darwin... it seems to be senseless to even try an attack here... our tank units were shredded... totally shredded... I of course expected level 6 forts but for sure not level 8 forts... all the combat engineers we had here once again were totally useless... ten thousand heavy bomber attacks proved to have no effect either... the enemy literally had no av destroyed... let him just fly out his troops while building up fortress Timor... have spotted already some 70.000 troops on the island, we´re probably also going to meet high fort levels there...

that´s what happened to my tank units, many of them LOST 75% of their strenght... you definetely can consider the Japanese tank killers, as we know, they were equipped with a heavy complement of anti tank weapons... not being able to damage the enemy due to level 8 forts is one thing, seeing a whole tank Army going up in flames against a Japanese Army is another thing... Chalchin Gol/Nomonhan comes to mind, I doubt the Russian had much better tanks in 39 than we´ve got here at Darwin and even the Japanese force can be compared to what the Japanese had in real life against the Russian... and the Russian tanks whiped the floor with the Japanese divisions... oh well... just bring av... av... av... av... that´s why my Chinese Army is so UBER... just bring av... av... av... and that´s why I need two to three times as many divisions than were needed to whipe out a Japanese div on some fortified island in real life...

and yes, my troops have been fully supplied, even though the unit below shows red supply AFTER the battle... also funny to see the tank unit losing 75% of it´s strenght but bein only 22 disrupted... even weirder is to see the unit still having 99 moral I guess...

Task forces break off...

the enemy tries to engage our LCT that are moving from Gove to Bathurst with troops and supplies but usually we spot the enemy DDs before they can make their night run to the target which enables us to send some ships there too... after the loss of a light cruiser to the movement bug (wrong movement and ship sunk by my bombers) the enemy is now using DDs only... we´ve moved a modern CL with a couple of DDs into the area because I thought that these light cruisers would be perfect for a night engagement with enemy destroyers... well, the enemy crossed the T, we only hit water and two 5 inch shells slam into one of our DDs... our destroyer won´t have any problem to make it and we saved the dozen LCTs going in so it could be seen as a minor success even though the enemy gets away with it totally unharmed...

Submarine attack near Townsville at 92,144

Japanese Ships
SS I-121

Allied Ships
APA Custer, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage[:(]

APA Custer is sighted by SS I-121
SS I-121 launches 4 torpedoes at APA Custer

oh no... one of the precious APA is sunk, the ship just arrived at Townsville with the enemy sub entering the hex too... I-121 is a mine layer sub and this surely is a mine laying mission, the mines will be cleared within a day tomorrow so it´s highly annoying that we lose one of the most valuable ships at the moment to torps... the ship could have absorbed one hit with the level 7 port of Townsville, but two torps sent the ship straight down... I get punished for not having any escorts in this TF... bad luck I guess to reach your target and being sunk just off the harbour entrance by a sub that only stays a couple of hours there to lay some mines...

there we go... three US Inf divisions, a HQ, two combat eng units and two base forces are storming the beach of Rabaul... a 100 ship amphib TF consisting of APA/AKA/LSD/LST should unload all troops and lots of supplies within a day... all troops are 100% prepped and the unloading goes quite well... got 18th Brit division a NZ bgd and another combat eng unit as reserve at Milne Bay but these are by far not enough prepared to be thrown in so if we are bogged down it will take a couple of weeks more to see the reinforcements land at the target...

I just love APA and LST... [:)]

you just gotta love those attack bombers (NOT)... really don´t know if the patch will only force them to 100ft all the time or if this will also change something on how they work... as I´m setting them to 100ft attacks now anyway I can only hope the patch is going to also change something in how they work... 6 bombers attack, three are shot down for nothing... no MG hits, no flak supression, no bomb hits... just bombers being shot down... give me B-25C and let me attack at 1000ft... YES, WE were the ones doing the bombardment, but the enemy counterNUKED us... yes, the bombardment routine is working very well for sure... mhm

Might as well ship your tank units south for r&r for all the good that they do. Like you I thought they would be really effective in the desert.

the funny thing is that I´m 100% sure that a 10000av Chinese Army with three dozen 75mm guns and some 80mm mortars would take Darwin in two or three attacks. Just remember my attack on Liuchow, took the town in open terrain with 45 exp Chinese units against 1500 Japanese av behind level 6 forts. The town fell on my first attack that achieved a 7:1. The Japanese were kicked out suffering horrendous losses, the Chinese lost two dozen combat squads with a couple of hundred more being disabled (which you don´t notice because they were spread out over two dozen units). It´s different with the Western Allied Army I´ve brought to Darwin, less assault value but the most firepower with the most tanks on the map. No other hex on the map got as much firepower as Darwin´s. In the end, it´s all about assault value.

At the moment I´m not in the position to ship any units out, those that were totally shredded are marching South now, takes them two months to reach Sydney I guess. All we can hope for is that Rainer flies out so many of his troops that we finally will only face a couple of hundred av, otherwise I will have to ship 10000 Chinese av to Darwin in 1948 because the Western Allied just lack the "manpower" that actually gives you av. They´ve got firepower but not enough av and I prefer av ten times over firepower.

taking the next empty base in Vietnam... our troops will now move WEST into Thailand and some Corps will take position South of Vinh to block any Japanese attempt to counterattack from that direction... Vinh will be our main supply hub in the area and will support our Army in this region... hope to move enough supplies into the area to be independent from the rest of China for the case of being cut off by a Japanese drive on Liuchow or Nanning which is something I highly expect... enemy troops are massing at Canton at the moment, 18 enemy units spotted there so I´ve got no doubt that the Japanese are planning a massive counterattack... this won´t matter a lot (even if we would lose most of China) when we are able to get a line of supply to our Western Allied that are trying to break through the Moulmein - Chiang Mai line...

the two missing fragments of the two squadrons go in together... that´s one of these "coordination aspects" that makes me sick... why are squadrons always losing a couple of their aircraft that are then linking up with each other?

ouch! our attack fails miserably... one of our combat eng units was totally shredded, got not even one combat squad in ready condition anymore... also two divs were hit hard... looks like I´m going to need the reinforcements but they are just over 50 prep... 18th Brit div, a NZ bgd and a combat eng unit are tasked to reinforce the fights at Rabaul... going to need four Inf divs, three combat engineer rgt and a bgd to hopefully being able to wear down the defenders...

having whole units being completely whiped out in one attack didn´t seem to happen as often in WITP as it now happens in AE... having a 100% ready unit looking like this after one attack seems a bit off to me, but the same happens with the uber nuclear counterbombardment also when I´ve got whole tank units whiped out... [8|] weird IMO and once again the unit is only showing 33 disruption... so being totally whiped out but the disruption is only at 33? pff... and morale stays at 98... don´t know if it was at 99 yesterday but losing max 1 morale and being only 33 disrupted after having ceased to exist as a combat unit is off to me... talk about something flawed here... or is it JUST ME again?
