newb questions regarding icons and fonts

Post by otownkayaker »

I've had a really hard time getting into this game even though this is a game that I really should like (to give some background, for those of you that remember, my favorite all time operational strategy games were Atomic's V for Victory and World at War Series and still play these games to this day) I finally came to realize that the biggest reason I'm not getting into the game is the graphics...I have a really hard time seeing what the units on the screen are as well as the fonts that are used both on the Map and in the UI...quite possibly this is because I'm slightly colorblind. Is there someway (maybe a mod?) to make the counters and fonts "cleaner"? I have absolutely no problems seeing the graphics in the earlier games I mentioned, although I will admit to having problems with some other strategy games of the same type.

Also, and I realize this is a personal preference, is it possible to display on the counters the unit ids? I also find it distracting to always check what units I'm dealing with. Something like a third setting that rotates between atk and def strength, movement, and finally unit ID. Or perhaps there's a setting that I'm not familiar with that I can tell the UI to only display 1st ID units or 173rd Arbn Bde Units? This would allow me to focus on a particular unit at a time instead of having to sort out all the units at one time.

Thanks in adv.

The new ones aren't as high a contrast. I waffle between the higher contrast and the new tiles myself.

One simple thing to try is moving the PNG files in the graphics directory onto another directory, that will restore the older graphics. You can set the option to turn off the PNG files instead if that is simpler, but it may limit you in the future.

Once you've done that, if you look at the scenario design forum, there's a stickied thread with a number of graphics mods that may be a decent compromise. I thought I'd seen a mod already for the graphics, but I can't find it now.

One last thing you can do is to play with the brightness and contrast options. The game has to be stopped and restarted between changes, but they might help.

Thanks, Ralph, I'll try to move the png's out of the graphic directories.
I'll also try and find those mods you mentioned.

Is there an 'easy' button to put the fonts back to the 3.2 ones, or do I need to play around in the font.ini file ? I'm not much for the big yellow letters (as seen below), nor the placenames with the background (not shown).

Sorry, you've got to play around in it. It's basically replacing all bitmappedfonrt(??) = N with Y

I can't remember the name, but you may want to copy the PNG font files back over, they actually are a bit clearrer than the bmp files.

Kurt, what's the placename font you're using? This is the only part where i am still not so happy about. I use calibri, used cambria before. But it doesn't look as good as under 3.2, Ralph changed something with the outline i think.

Anyone using 'ERAS medium ITC'? There's a folder in /Graphics with an 'alternate' opart 3 fonts.ini. Looks really good. Of course i adjusted the coulours a bit. Done away with the painfull yellow, replaced it with a gold that resembles the coulour of the equipment and buttons.

If you delete the "Opart 3 Fonts.ini" that you were using (or rename it), the game will generate the default one.

I was going to copy the old one from my Win98 machine, but now I don't have to. Thanks !
