Combat
IJN MSWs encountered a mine field near Fergusson Island and started sweeping it.
An IJN sub attacked and hit the MSW Rampur with a torpedo near Trimcomalee causing the Rampur to sink. All hands were saved except for the three men who died in the explosion.
127 X B-17E raided Port Moresby and were attacked by 29 X Zero. The frail fighters were poorly built to withstand the hail of bullets fired on them. 16 X Zero were destroyed by the defensive fire of the bombers who lost 4 planes downed and another 21 damaged. These B-17s might be slow and fly like trucks, but their crews are loving the survivability of them. The airbase took moderate damage and a large supply dump was assumed to have been destroyed based on secondary explosions. The debriefings also caused the belief that the runway will take lots of effort to reopen.
Crew fatigue is the biggest obstacle faced in this bombing campaign as the Japanese are getting to much time to recover in between attacks. The Allied generals are meeting in Sydney and the rumor is that the aircrews will get their rest with the groups rotating in and out of the forward bases in the effort to cut the 1 raid every 3rd day to a raid every other day. Some staff officers are making the case that just rotating crews will fatigue them. Larger bases are required along with more support units.
Ed is in a meeting at the Pentagon and it's focus is the PTO.
“Sixteen Japanese LCUs have pulled back from Chungking. Why? What are the Japanese up to? Are they hoping to lure the Chinese defenders into open terrain?” The officers attending the meeting have no answers to the question posed by Ed. He continues with, “Eight Japanese LCUs have left Darwin and advanced towards the Allied force heading towards Darwin. Why?” He looks around the room and suggests the following, “We should suggest to our Chinese Allies that they should sit tight in their defensive positions. If they advance the Japanese have the ability to outmaneuver them and cut off their retreat back to Chungking. If Chungking is lost the Chinese resistance will collapse. As to Operation Grinder I see no reason to change plans. It stinks advancing on an enemy of unknown strength and composition, but we have no choice. I think that as soon as additional units become available they should be sent forward as we can't have enough strength involved on this front.” With that Ed thanks the men for their time and resumes his seat. The debate goes on and mercifully Ed is called away by an orderly.
O'Bannon remains tied to the wharf as orders are waited for. The men not on duty or granted shore leave take it easy writing letters, playing cards or shooting craps to kill the time. Bill watches as the ship's torpedoes are swapped out for new ones.
Benham is nearing Pearl and Phil has assembled the crew, with the Skipper's permission. “You remember a past stay we had where certain members of the crew managed to repeatedly get in trouble? Well I'm telling you that such behavior will not be tolerated this time around. If you land in the brig I will not be saving your sorry butts, nor will any other officer from this ship. We are the crew of the Benham and we are proud of our combat record so let's keep our noses clean while our ship gets her refit.” Phil has made his point and he knows that for the most part the men will stay out of trouble.
“One more day of this crap and then we can do it as Marines,” says a boot to Orsini as they prepare the barracks for an inspection. Tomorrow is the big day and to the man all are excited and full of anticipation.
Gunny and the men of the platoon are exhausted as they have participated in yet another amphibious assault drill. Somehow they actually landed in the proper area assigned to them and hit the beach in a cohesive manner. Gunny knows that when the enemy is firing at them they'll be lucky just to reach the beach.
Pete is frustrated at the lack of news about the Allied advance in Australia. At lunch today a young man approached him and asked what it was like to fight the Japanese. Pete looked at him and saw that he was missing a leg.
“It appears to me that you have first hand knowledge on that subject,” replies Pete.
“Oh, this was from when the truck convoy I was in was attacked by Japanese planes. I never saw a Jappo up close,” said the young man.
“Well the Japanese are fearless, tireless and terrible foes to face. The only way to deal with them is a hail of lead.” Pete returns to eating his lunch and the young man toys with his food as he ponders what Pete said.

57 X B-25C Mitchell attempt an attack on the airfield at Mandalay and are bounced by a CAP of 55 X Zero and 25 X Tony. 15 X B-25C are downed and another 8 are damaged while the rest are forced to abandon the mission before a single bomb is dropped on target. All of the bombs are dropped harmlessly over the jungle as the crews look to lighten their loads and increase their speed to effect an escape from the meat grinder they ran into. The Japanese had 6 X Tony damaged in the lopsided battle. The Allied commanders will have to consider holding off with future raids until long range fighters are made available to escort the bombers as these kind of loses are unacceptable.
The Japanese force facing the Grinder troops moving on Darwin have armor with them and the Allies have none, though they do have substantial AT strength so they will play it conservative for now.
The Japanese have also moved out of Derby to face the 2 Aussie divisions in open country. No intel as to what these 2 LCUs are and the orders are to commence a bombardment of them.
One LCU is blocking the path of the force moving on Wyndham and that force's orders are to move forward. It is hoped that the two western forces will have fairly easy victories and then be able to move in support of the Darwin force.
There is only 1 Japanese LCU within 30 miles of Chungking now and an attack on it has been ordered.
The Japanese have also pulled back from Sian and the defenders breathed a sigh of relief though their commanders wonder what the Japanese are up to.
The fact that both of these cities remain in Chinese hands came as a surprise to the Allies. It was thought that by bolstering Chungking's defenses Sian might fall, but these fears have proved to be unfounded.
“Yes, sometimes you just need to bleed until the other guy blinks. OK. Yes I'll look into it. Goodbye.” Ed hangs up the phone and looks at the map on the wall. Those pins will start to be removed as Operation Grinder should succeed at least partially and then comes Snowball. It's hoped that Snowball will be the beginning of the end and that the initiative will swing to the Allies. His thoughts continue to race through his head and he mutters, “Damn,” just barely loud enough to be heard outside of his office. “Get me Secretary Knox on the phone,” he calls. A little while later he hangs up the phone knowing that he's overstepped his bounds. He's told Frank Knox that he's sick of life at the Pentagon and wants out. Now time will tell what happens to him.
“Still nothing in the news? I suppose if they had something good to report we'd know about it. I sure hope that our boys haven't run into the Japs and gotten themselves beaten,” says the man sitting near Pete.
O'Bannon has been moved by a tug from the wharf to where she's been assigned to anchor. Still no orders and Bill has told his Exec, LT Frank Field, to give the outgoing and incoming mail a priority until they depart Pearl. If I live from one letter to the next from Sandy, he thinks, then the crew must be doing the same.
The Benham will reach Pearl Harbor tomorrow, but until then all hands are alert and continuing with their duties. It's a constant worry that IJN subs could be operating in the Hawaiian Islands looking to pick off shipping coming and going.
“Orsini,” calls out the DI, “2nd Marine Division, good luck son you did good.” He continues to call out names and matching them to new assignments.
“2nd Marines are where,” asks Orsini, “How will I get there? The first thing I'm going to do is head back to Hoboken and eat some of mom's cooking. If I'm going to fight the Japs I'm going to do it with fond memories fresh in my mind of things like lasagna, baked ziti, meatballs, sausage.....”
“Will somebody shut him up,” exclaims another of the guys, “I'm starving and he's making it worse.”
That night Joe Orsini, USMC, catches a train bound for Newark, New Jersey. From there he'll get to Hoboken by hook or by crook. His arrival will be a surprise and he looks forward to seeing his family and pals.

98 X B-17E and 16 X Hudson attacked Port Moresby and fought off the CAP of 18 X Zero en route to bombing the airfield. Heavy damage was done to the facilities and runway while secondary explosions are observed. Ground casualties are believed to have been moderate. 2 X B-17E are downed while another 13 were damaged and 4 X Hudson were destroyed while the Japanese lost 14 X Zero in their brave but futile attempt to protect their base.
The Allied forces bombarded the Japanese, who suffered light casualties 42 miles SW of Derby. Tomorrow they will conduct a general attack on these 2 LCUs which haven't been identified as of yet.
The main Grinder force will follow the 1st Australian Division and engage the opposing force of 9 LCUs.
The Wyndham force continues it's advance towards the objective with a blocking force of 1 LCU known to be in their path about 37 miles away.
Operation Grinder still holds it's promise after initial contact with the enemy, though what lies ahead is still unknown and that worries anyone smart enough to tie his own shoelaces.
Joe Orsini sleeps fitfully on the crowded train. The ride is generally boring and some guys in Army uniforms are getting to be annoying. A few Marines in the railroad car ask them to hold it down and for now it's a little quieter.
The Benham and her charges arrive safely and Benham ties to a pier so that her ammunition stocks may be offloaded before the refit begins. The crewmen put their backs into it, grumbling the whole time. Phil has been left in command as Benham's Captain has left the ship. Things are going smoothly, but the handling of live ammo is always a task that demands the utmost care.
“Was that Benham that arrived with that small convoy earlier today?” Bill looks through his binoculars and sees men busily working on and around the destroyer in question. “I believe that a friend of mine is her exec,” he says to his own exec. “I'm going to head over there Frank. I leave our lovely lady in your capable hands. See you later.” With that Bill leaves the bridge and awaits an approaching lighter that's bringing O'Bannon's mail. He intends to get a ride to shore and pay a call on his old buddy.
On the Palawan it's been another boring day and then suddenly from astern there are explosions. All eyes turn in that direction, but they can see nothing. Later that evening the word passes that a couple of the escorts were prosecuting a contact. Nobody knows if it was a sub or not. Nobody even knows if this is just another rumor or not.
“You know what really bothers me about this war,” Red asks Cookie. “We're right smack dab in the middle of it and we don't even know what's going on around us, let alone somewhere else. One minute you're sailing along and the next, WHAM, you've been attacked. What kind of life is this?”

[&:]Interesting choice. My guess is the IJA has decided to trade ground and troops for time, so as to prevent an allied airbase in the area for as long as possible.

Combat
An Allied force attacked the Japanese 32 miles SW Derby. The Allied troops numbered 31.8K and the Japanese 3.3K. The Japanese were forced to retreat, losing heavily and the Allies casualties were light.
The Japanese attacked the Allied force 29 miles SW of Darwin with 48.9K troops. Loses were pegged at being moderate for the Japanese, while the attack forced the Australian defenders, 14.2K strong, to retreat with heavy casualties. Having a single division leading the way resulted in it needing time out of the line to rebuild itself. In the future more strength will move forward to avoid a repeat of this kind of thing.
Grinder has gone off as well as could be expected to date, but caution is still in the air as the Japanese rule the seas and skies making what's ahead for the ground troops an unknown. It is now believed that 9 LCUs block the way to Darwin and another 8 are holed up in Wyndham. Composition of these forces is undetermined though it's expected that infantry and armor in large numbers are there.

Manpower problems are being dealt with by all of the countries fighting the war, he thinks. The Germans and Russians are grinding each other up at Stalingrad and he wonders who will have the staying power to wear the other side down in that bloody struggle. This growing Nazi effort to kill so many people is something Ed just can't fathom. How can a country fight a war and expend so much effort on killing off civilian populations? He sends his daily report on it's way and wonders what is being done about the intercepted radio transmissions at Prince Rupert.
Benham has been moved to the yard at Pearl Harbor and is now undergoing a refit and some repairs. Phil, with time on his hands is spending the day at the beach napping in the shade near the Royal Hawaiian Hotel. Bill was supposed to have joined him, but so far he's a no show. Phil thinks that at least they had some time together yesterday and that in this war tomorrow holds nothing but the unknown.
Bill, upon his return to the O'Bannon, was handed orders that came while he was gone. LT Field assuming that they were sailing orders started preparations for sea. He recalled the men on liberty and canceled it for others awaiting their chance to get ashore. Bill reads the orders and tells Frank that they sail tomorrow morning as part of a small TF bound for Anchorage. They'll be trading Hawaii's beautiful weather for Alaska's cold. Bill writes a note to Phil apologizing for the demands of the war.
“Hello Pepper,” says a familiar voice from behind him. Pete turns and smiles to see a few of the men he fought with in the futile defense of Darwin.

An Allied force attacked the Japanese 32 miles SW Derby. The Allied troops numbered 31.8K and the Japanese 3.3K. The Japanese were forced to retreat, losing heavily and the Allies casualties were light.
The Japanese attacked the Allied force 29 miles SW of Darwin with 48.9K troops. Loses were pegged at being moderate for the Japanese, while the attack forced the Australian defenders, 14.2K strong, to retreat with heavy casualties. Having a single division leading the way resulted in it needing time out of the line to rebuild itself. In the future more strength will move forward to avoid a repeat of this kind of thing.
Grinder has gone off as well as could be expected to date, but caution is still in the air as the Japanese rule the seas and skies making what's ahead for the ground troops an unknown. It is now believed that 9 LCUs block the way to Darwin and another 8 are holed up in Wyndham. Operation Grinder continues to be hampered by Japanese air raids on the troops. Orders have been issued for air defense units to move to the front, but it's a very long haul to get there.

Elanor Roosevelt arrived in London as a guest of the King for a 3 week visit.
The RAF bombed Genoa and Turin, Italy today.
The British 8th Army attacked and gained some ground. The Germans tried to counter attack, but the British repulsed them.
His day has been spent going over mountains of paper comprised of data concerning Operation Snowball. He wonders when he'll hear from Frank Knox, or anybody for that matter, to get him out of the Pentagon and into the war which he's been waiting to fight all of his life.
O'Bannon has sailed as part of a TF made up of 1 X BB, 1 X CA, 1 X CL and 4 X DD and is bound for Anchorage. Bill is happy to be back at sea and the throb of O'Bannon's engines is a comforting feeling. The mail will begin to pile up again until they reach Alaska and then he'll send his letters to Sandy on their way.
Phil is sad that his friend and he didn't have much time to catch up. He's envious that Bill has a ship of his own and has sailed as part of a TF meant to fight, not as a convoy escort like Benham's been doing. Maybe he'll get a command of his own as new ships are constantly arriving to join the fight.
Sandy has been in a better frame of mind lately as letters have been arriving almost daily. Dave's broken hand has killed the shop's repair business so he just hangs around and pumps gas every now and then.
Pete's time with his pals yesterday has improved his state of mind and today a nurse even said that he was being a real teddy bear.
“Hi, anybody home? Mom?” Joe Orsini is suddenly pounced on by the family dog and is almost knocked off his feet. At least somebody is here to greet me, he thinks as he walks through the house. Looking out of the kitchen window he sees his mother hanging clothes on the line to dry. He steps outside and she spots him almost immediately.
“Joe! Oh Joe, I'm so happy to see you,” she says as she hugs and kisses him. “Your father is working at the shipyard now and he probably won't be home for another few hours. I don't suppose that you're hungry?”
“Mom, I dreamed about your cooking. I plan on stuffing myself until I explode. Where's Lou,” he asks.
“Your brother should be getting home from school in a little while. We had a fight about him staying in school as he wanted to drop out and enlist. He's only 17 and unless he lies we have to sign papers so once he graduates he'll be free to join up. Why don't you take your stuff up to your room and relax while I make you something to tide you over until dinner,” she says as she's already busily gathering the ingredients.
As Joe looks around his room as the odors of the cooking food drifts up to him and he inhales deeply. I must be in heaven, he thinks.

100 X Zero and 25 X Tony attacked Ledo and were engaged by the Allied CAP of 6 X Mohawk, 6 X Hurricane and 4 X Spitfire. 2 X Tony are downed and the entire CAP was shredded. Not a single plane made it back to base. The AVG will have to get the P-38G if the Allies are to have any hope in the air in this area. It's a shame that 2/3 of the AVG went poof in a bug earlier in the game and is now limited to 24 planes instead of 72.
A convoy was spotted 450 miles out of Pearl by a sub launched float plane. A watchful eye will be kept and the men of the convoy's ships are all praying that there won't be a surprise in the form of the KB lurking in their path.
It's looking like Operation Grinder hasn't brought enough to the table as Wyndham and Darwin are very heavily defended. The force targeting Derby and Broome is looking to fare better and then beef up the other attackers. A call has been sent out to bring up the reserves. This will take longer than expected and the name of the op appears to have been prophetic. The only questions are which side will grind down which and when, if ever, will there be a winner?
O'Bannon knifes through the waves searching, always searching for lurking trouble. She's in the lead position in the TF probing with her radar, sonar and lookouts' eyes for any telltale signs of trouble. Bill was just relieved by Frank and he leaves the bridge heading to the ward room. Once there he gets a cup of coffee and something to eat. After that he makes for his cabin and sits down with a tired sigh to begin composing a letter to Sandy when the klaxon sounds GQs. Pounding feet race by and over the squawk box Bill is informed that they have a possible sub contact. Bill returns to the bridge only to be informed that whatever it was, it's gone now. Bill tells Frank to let him know if anything develops and he returns to his cabin. He trusts Frank to handle the ship and in keeping with his policy to delegate authority he resists staying on the bridge. Back in his cabin he decides to get some sleep and after that he'll write a letter to Sandy.
Two men from the Benham have landed in the brig for a brawl that busted up a bar. It seems that they felt duty bound to defend the honor of their ship after it was insulted by some sailors from the Wasp. True to his word, Phil has left the men to their fate. After checking on what happened he discreetly makes a phone call to an officer on the Wasp that he knows.
“Yeah, I'd really appreciate it if you could spring my two guys also. Just don't let on that I had anything to do with it. Sure thing, tonight for drinks. See you then. Thanks.”
Phil has handled the situation and nobody will know that he did exactly what he said he wouldn't do. How can he let these men down for defending their ship's honor?
Pete has been informed that they expect to have a space for him on a ship within a couple of weeks. This news further lifts his spirits and he's actually pleasant again for the second day in a row.
Dave left Sandy at the station and he went for a hike to “clear his mind.” She told him to be back for dinner on time or he would eat it cold. The mailman came by, gave her the mail and told her that the Edwards had just lost a son in the war. Sandy immediately sees that there is a letter from Dave's sister in Oregon, but nothing from Bill. How am I going to survive this damned war without going crazy, she wonders. The worrying about Bill is torturing her.
Lunch was at a bar with a couple of friends. Joe wore his uniform and the bartender told him that his beer was on the house. His friends are working at the Marine Terminal and they told him that lunch is on them. The work is steady and the hours are long, but the pay is great. The only thing they complain about is that there aren't to many things to buy with their new found wealth. There are lots of girls and a shortage of men, they tell him with a grin on their faces. After lunch Joe goes back home and the odors emanating from the kitchen are something heavenly. Mom is making eggplant parmigiana to go with macaroni for dinner. Tomorrow, being Sunday there will be macaroni, lasagna, meatballs, sausage, chicken, vegetables and salad. She tells him that there will be company for lunch tomorrow. He'll be lucky if he fits into his uniform in a few days, but who cares.
Gunny has just left a meeting and now he knows to expect replacements in about 3 to 4 weeks time. The only problem he sees with this is that the new guys won't be up to speed in the training cycle.

Twice today the IJN bombarded the Australians at Derby causing moderate casualties. While the Aussies inflicted moderate loses on Derby's defenders with an artillery bombardment in preparation for an assault to liberate the inhabitants.
The Japanese swept Ledo again with 97 X Zero and 51 X Tony only to find nobody was at home. Allied commanders withdrew air assets as loses were unjustifiable.
63 X B-17E and 7 X B-24D attacked the airfield at Port Moresby. The Japanese threw 21 X Zero and 21 X Tony at the big bombers, but the raid did moderate damage to the field and it's support services anyway. 10 X B-17 were downed and 24 more were damaged while only 1 B-24 was damaged. The Japanese fighters lost 5 X Zero and 4 X Tony destroyed, 11 X Zero and 9 X Tony were damaged. Loses of this many bombers aren't sustainable.
As the O'Bannon sails northwards and the temperatures begin to drop a bit. The pleasant nights of Hawaii are a fond memory fading with each passing mile. Bill finally gets around to writing a letter to Sandy and then heads for the bridge. Everything is running smoothly and Bill tells the men to “carry on.”
Modifications to the Benham are going well. The two men who were released from the brig appeared before Phil and apologized for their behavior, but what else could they do they ask. Phil agrees with them silently to himself and gives them duties to keep them busy and limit the time on their hands. He tells them that another offense and even if they're released from the brig that when he's done with them they'll want to be back in it.
“Pete, I promise you that as soon as I have word on what's going on with your transportation I'll let you know. Yes that's a promise,” says CDR Feldt.
Pete thanks him and hangs up the telephone. He feels a little guilty for bothering Eric, but why shouldn't he take advantage of any connection he has? At least now he knows that some transports will be heading eastwards soon and when they leave Perth he'll know.

“It appears that the Japanese have intentions of staying in Australia as reinforcements are being sent there,” says Ed. “I've been informed that it is suspected that these forces going to Darwin are being drawn from Port Moresby. Going on that assumption orders to subs operating in those waters have been issued sending them to new patrol areas in the hope that an interception can be made.” He hangs up the phone and leans back in his chair rubbing his temples. A headache is not what he needs right now. Four things have always bothered him about Operation Grinder:
The lack of waiting to throw all the troops forward at one time instead of the gradual addition as time goes on.
No air support for the ground troops.
No recon to show what the Japanese were waiting with.
No naval support due to the lack of decent port facilities within a reasonable distance.
Appeasement of Australia's government pressured the Allies into going forward before they were really ready to. He understands the immense problems the Aussies have with the Japanese in their home. Nothing to do for it now as these things develop their own momentum.
The IJN pounded the Australian troops outside of Derby again today, loses were light though.
An air raid on Port Moresby made up of 43 X B-17E and 7 X B-24D was engaged by the Japanese CAP of 14 X Zero and 12 X Tony. 6 X Zero and 2 X Tony were reported downed, while an additional 3 X Zero and 6 X Tony were reported as damaged. Allied loses were 3 X B-17E destroyed while 2 X B-17E were damaged and 4 X B-24D were also shot up. The damage to the air field was light, but to hit on consecutive days served notice to the Japanese that there is no set schedule for these attacks.
Japanese ground attacks on Grinder LCUs are doing almost no damage and their planes are being lost and damaged in the air attacks.

No concrete word as to when Benham will be ready for duty again, but rumors fly about an upcoming operation that they'll be ready for.
Dave sits in the rocking chair waiting for vehicles that don't come. He falls asleep and Sandy awakens him when she arrives with his lunch.
“Dad, if you're bored I could watch the station for you,” she says.
Dave smiles, gives her a hug and peck on the cheek, “Sandy, relax there's nothing to do except to relax. People aren't traveling much and until I can start doing repairs again we'll just have to take it easy.” Dave knows that there wasn't any mail today and that just raises Sandy's level of anxiety.
In Hoboken a sailor in the bar spots Joe and says, “Hey jar head, yeah you. Get your butt over here.”
Joe takes a look to see who has the big mouth and replies, “You should be more respectful of a Marine, if you know what's good for you.” He approaches the sailor and breaks into a huge grin as the two greet each other enthusiastically. They have a couple of beers together as they talk away the afternoon. They went to high school together and have been friends since before they can remember. This life at home while great is a little different feeling to Joe now though.
Training continues, but a slower pace for the 2nd Marines. Each passing day brings them closer to Operation Snowball, though they don't know it. The men do know that eventually they will meet the Japanese on the field of battle and that as Marines they know that they will be expected to win the fight.

Ed finds himself wondering once again how can the Soviets can keep taking such huge loses in defeat after defeat and yet still have more to throw at the Germans. His thoughts then go over to speculating as to just how long the Germans can absorb the loses that they continue to have in their victories. Victories that are hollow, he thinks, as they accomplish little in a military sense.
Pete is still trying to calmly wait for a ship to carry him home. He knows that they plod along, taking forever to get anywhere. Still the anticipation just might kill him, something that the Japanese tried and failed to do. He snaps out of his thoughts and rejoins the here and now at the sound of his favorite nurse's voice. They chat for a while and then she invites him for another picnic, which he readily agrees to. “Tommorrow it is then,” she says.
Phil is bored and misses being at sea. He visited the ship today and observed the workers swarming over her. Soon Benham will carry him back out to sea and if the rumors that abound are close to the truth they'll be a part of something big that's brewing. The crew is staying out of trouble and for that he's glad.
A letter came today for Sandy from Bill and though it's over a month old it's softened her demeanor. Dave is happy for her and decides that to kill time he'll clean up the shop a bit. As he's working he finds tools and parts under piles of garbage and tells himself that he'll have to be neater in the future.
Sandy spots him at work and says, “Dad if you could be a little neater you'd have that stuff when you need it.” She laughs and leaves him.
Dave thinks that Sandy is a lot like her mother was.
Red, Cookie and Lucky are staring at the ocean when Cookie says, “Red this cruise is not good for our empire building. How can we ever amass a fortune from out here in the middle of nowhere? I'm starting to think that quitting this job would be a good idea except for one small problem.”

“If we quit then we would be drafted into the military and that would be worse.”
Red thinks about that and replies, “Yeah, we could end up in the Navy and then we'd be the ones trying to protect the Palawan. I suppose we might as well stay put.”

S-28 tracked and reported a Japanese convoy 70 miles NW of Darwin. She then pressed home an attack hitting an AP with a fish that caused fires. The escorts vigorously attacked the sub and S-28 suffered moderate systems damage and heavy flooding in the attack. S-28 is making for a safe port while her crew works feverishly in their battle against the sea. The AP was the lone reported merchantman and the escort was large so it's suspected that the AP was carrying a very important cargo. Could this have been the tank regiment that intel gave the heads up on?
An IJN ASW TF attacked SS KXIV about 11 miles off of Malacca, doing no damage as the Dutch boat masterfully evaded her tormentors in the confined waters of the Malacca Straits.

The IJN conducted two unopposed bombardments of the Allied troops at Derby, inflicting moderate casualties. A pullback has been ordered, but the division isn't responding to HQs.
12 X Tony attack swept Kungchang again with a Babs along to snoop around. The Chinese put up 6 X I-153c in opposition. The combat wasn't pressed home by either side so there were no loses or damaged planes.
S-28 is limping slowly along as her exhausted crew continues the battle to save their boat. The flooding has been stabilized and the pumps, which are back online, are beginning to make inroads as the leaks are being stopped.
The 4th Australian Division has been ordered to attack and liberate Broome. The assault will commence at dawn and is expected to carry the day as the Japanese seem to have vanished. The men of the 4th are in their forward staging areas having something to eat, a smoke, small talk and much nervousness. They doubt that the Japanese have pulled out and the men expect heavy fighting as this wouldn't be the first time intel has been wrong. Brigadier General J Stevens, the commander of the 4th meets with his staff and they go over the attack plan for tomorrow. Sleep will be hard to come by for everyone in the 4th tonight.
The main Grinder force continues to tie down an unknown Japanese force. They are also absorbing constant air raids.
“Damn it's getting cold,” says the lookout to nobody in particular. Bill pats the boy on the shoulder and tells him that it'll get worse. The lookout is surprised that Bill spoke to him and takes comfort in the fact that O'Bannon's commander cares for his crew.
Red hasn't managed to catch anyone and his plan is a failure. He heads to his bunk and finds that somebody has placed a dead rat there. Who is it? Why is he doing this?
Ed reads that today Nalchik fell to the Germans, who are now within 50 miles of the Grozny oil fields. How can the Red Army keep losing like this without crumbling? He has to give the Soviets credit as no matter what happens they bounce back for more and never say die. He wonders if he'll ever get into the fight or end his career in the Navy having been desk-bound while the biggest war the world has ever seen raged all around him.
Stalin is furious with his assembled generals, “What is being done to stop the Germans? Without oil how will we continue the fight? I want the tide turned and will not accept failure. The weather will favor us and I want the Nazis pushed back. This is our home we are fighting for. Failure means death!” He turns and stalks out of the meeting leaving ashen faced men who are more afraid of Stalin than the Germans.

The Japanese returned to Kungchang for another sweep with 32 X Tony and of course the snooping Babs. 15 X I-153c engaged the Japanese and lost 10 planes for their effort while destroying the Babs.
81 X B-17E and 2 X Do 24K-2 attacked Port Moresby and the Japanese managed to engage the attackers with 20 X Zero and 9 X Tony. 5 X Zero and 3 X Tony were reported as shot down while another 10 X Zero and 3 X Tony were damaged. The raid lost 15 X B-17E destroyed and 26 damaged while doing moderate damage to the air field, it's facilities and supply dumps. Ground troops loses were though to be light.
In a deliberate attack the 4th Australian Division hit Broome and finding no Japanese opposition there rolled into town amid cheering crowds of overjoyed Australians. BGEN Stevens, the division's CO, is feted with a ceremony by Broome's leading citizens while the orders to prepare to move on Derby are issued. At first light tomorrow most of the troops will be on the move while some will garrison Broome until relieved.

Ed has noted that the radio transmissions at Vancouver continue despite Canadian efforts to track down the source and shut it down. The Japanese also appear to feel that they're strong enough to deal with the Grinder force in the open as they've moved out of Darwin in force.
Another day on the Palawan and Red aches all over as he's been chipping paint. Upon his return to his bunk he finds a dead rat on it. Who the hell is doing this? Lucky appears and is very excited. Red has all he can do to calm the dog down. Suddenly an alarm goes off in Red's head. Where's that book I have about Weimaraners, it's got to be around here somewhere. He finds the book and starts reading. BINGO! It's not unusual for a Weimaraner, which is a hunting dog, to make a present of it's prey to it's owner. Red puts down the book and heads off to the galley to fill in Cookie.
“So that solves part of the puzzle. Now as to the torn pin ups the search goes on,” says Cookie.
Pete is confused about the nurse and his feelings. The last thing he wants is to get involved again. He couldn't stand being ditched again and the pain it causes. He also is aware that he has strong feelings for her. Suddenly he's snapped out of his thoughts by her voice.
“Pete, it's time for you to get some exercise so we can change your linens. Why don't you go to lunch and by the time you return we'll be done and long gone,” she says.
Pete nods, smiles at her and heads for the cafeteria.
Phil and a couple of other officers who a billeted in the Royal Hawaiian Hotel head off for a night on the town. Being young, single and alive during a war in a place like Honolulu shouldn't go to waste.

MSW Cromarty continued sweeping mines at Trimcomalee.
32 X Tony swept Kungchang and engaged the 5 X I-153c that were on patrol and quickly downed them all without losing a plane.
49 X Zero, 50 X Betty and 52 X Helen attacked Imphal in the morning and the Allied CAP of 10 X Mohawk, 13 X Hurricane and 30 X Spitfire pounced on them resulting in a furious battle. The Japanese loses were 19 X Zero destroyed, 1 damaged; 12 X Betty destroyed, 8 damaged and 8 X Helen destroyed, 10 damaged. Allied aircraft losses were 8 X Mohawk destroyed; 1 X Hurricane destroyed, 6 damaged; 4 X Spitfire destroyed, 10 damaged and 4 X B-25C were destroyed on the ground. Allied loses to the troops stationed there were light and the damage to the airfield, it's facilities and supplies was moderate.
A second Japanese raid hit Imphal in the afternoon with 82 X Zero, 49 X Tony and a Dinah. The Allies managed a CAP of 3 X Mohawk, 10 X Hurricane and 13 X Spitfire. The combat saw the Allies lose all of the Mohawks, 9 X Hurricane and all of the Spitfires to the Japanese losing 4 X Zero and 14 X Tony, 2 more of which were damaged.
The Allied attack on Derby was conducted right on schedule by the 2nd Australian Division under the command of LTC H Thompson. The attacking force of 16K troops engaged the Japanese defenders and routed them. The Japanese retreated in the direction of Wyndham, having suffered moderate loses while the Aussies sustained light casualties. Derby has now been liberated and the people are celebrating wildly. There are stories of Japanese brutalities floating around and this is just serving to fortify the resolve of the Australians to free all of their country and exact their revenge.
Operation Grinder has gotten off to a good start as it was hoped that the initial engagements would tie down the Japanese forces and as additional formations arrived at the front they would be slowly grind the Japanese down. Grinder now faces the main Japanese contingent in Australia and the fighting is expected to be protracted and bloody.
An Allied Bombardment at the railroad junction S of Darwin caused light casualties among the Japanese troops. The Japanese responded with their own bombardment and the Allied force took light loses also.
The remaining AVG squadron of 24 planes has been ordered to Imphal. They are flying the new P-38G and there is more than a passing interest as to how these new planes will acquit themselves with skilled pilots at the controls.
The base commander at Baker Island has become aware that it seems that the Japanese strength at Tarawa has been reduced and he orders the PBY squadron commander to continue recon of the island until further notice. He then sends a message to HQs in Pearl Harbor to alert them to this possible development. To his knowledge an attack on Tarawa was in the works, but got thrown on the back burner because of the strength of the garrison there.
The submarine Tautog has loaded mines and departed Noumea for Kiriwina Island where she will sow her deadly cargo.
Red watches Lucky as the dog frantically tries to catch a rat that has run behind some pipes. The large dog can't fit and is trying for all he's worth to get at his prey anyway. Red sees that the dog's focus is absolute. It's amazing, he thinks, that the dog has traits I never would've believed, especially his memory. Whenever the dog will pass these pipes from now on he'll check for rodents. There are a few cats on board the Palawan and they also help to keep the rodent population in check. The dog, much to everyone's surprise gets along great with the cats and they play together, when they aren't hunting.
Orsini is getting bored and has plans to go into New York City tonight with some friends. His mother insists that they all have dinner first and that she's making it now. Joe says, “Mom, the only other person on this earth who every took so much interest in me was my Drill Instructor.” An Italian household is run from the kitchen and there is always enough food to feed an army. When Joe's friends arrive to go into New York they are ordered into the dining room and told to eat. The young men leave a while later with full stomachs.
The USO Club in Pittsburgh has been busier than ever as the US Army Air Corps has flooded the city with trainees who are staying on the Pitt University campus. Elaine is talking with one of these men who is quartered in the Pitt Tower. He's kind of interesting, but not her type. As he drones on she becomes distracted and her thoughts drift to wondering how Bill is doing. Maybe she'll call him and if she can manage to travel to DC she might even get to see him.

Darwin is a little far from any bases now held by the Allies.
You have B-17's, B-24's and P-38's now. That should be enough to raid Darwin's airfield.
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

I can't reach Darwin from Derby, just Wyndham, if I want fighter protection. Engineers are all on the other side of Oz as it was thought that taking Darwin would be much easier.

Ed has noted that the number of troops at Tarawa have been stable and the reduction in number was nothing more than the lack of certainty involved in photo recon. He has noticed that Gili Gili might be just the kind of target that the Allies need, not heavily defended and a good position for bases to launch strikes from. He wonders if any subs will reach Koepang in time to attempt an intercept of the AP headed there. His report for the day will make mention of these items, just in case somebody doesn't notice them. Never assume anything, he thinks to himself, as what is missed can swing the course of a battle or a war. Now as to that very active radio at Prince Rupert he'll make a call and see if he can't light a fire under somebody's butt to get something done about it.
IJN carriers have appeared not far from Broome, but there's nothing to oppose them or even targets for their planes.
