Finished the demo 2x with two different nations, although the small map is way too crowded with city states for my taste. Switched from default difficulty level to Prince and it was a bit more challenging now. The one thing I enjoy is the new combat system, feels sorta like Panzer General. But then again, waging war seems to be the most feasible way to play CiV 5. On the other hand it's highly visible that Firaxis streamlined CiV for the sake of higher 'accessibility' (the disease of all modern games). Two things I noticed: there are no nation leaders to choose from anymore and land units don't need ship transports, but can embark themselves and 'walk' over water, considering one researched the according technology. Why companies always have to remove attributes instead of enhancing depth and details is beyond me.

Mind you, I'm rather the guy who plays a video game until he beats it and loose interest after. So loyal fanboys might come to a different conclusion and Civ 5 is in no way a bad game. Just not my cup of tea, as it doesn't require enough thinking.

I'm not sure you could choose a nation leader anyway - you could choose a nation, but the leader was assigned to you from what I recall in Civ IV

Some nations had more than one leader so you could choose e.g. England had Elizabeth I, Victoria or Churchill. These were not all available from the first release - I think Churchill and maybe Victoria came with the expansions.

Need to get something off my chest....

I had a quick look at the manual and this has certainly whet my appetite for the game - roll on Friday! However I was very disappointed about one thing. The phrase P***ED off is used in one section to describe anger at something.

I know its not the worst swear word in the world, but why the need for it? In the UK, standards of speech seem to be dropping all the time. Dropping of H's seems to be a pre-requisite for young T.V / radio presenters getting hired. Swearing is becoming common place in radio edit versions of pop songs too. Even so, I was still naive enough to be shocked that this language appears in a game manual like this.

As someone who rarely looks at a manual (would rather just jump in and learn through play) I do not know if Matrix are "guilty" of this drop in standards too - but I hope not.

I agree, let me say my language isn't best, but I don't swear around my kids, and I won't let anyone either, if this is an ebook manual, the publishers have no excuse and should remove asap, after all it is game directed towards players of all ages. Life is becoming a sad event. I'm with you Warspite and Judge.

I'm not sure if I view this the same way. I'm not offended by speech in and of itself. I'm not the type of person that's going to start crying when someone uses the word PI**ED. I find that utterly ridiculous to be honest. What I am bothered by is proper grammar. If swear words are used in a grammatically correct sentence, I've no issue with it. But simply being offended by the use of a word is laughable. I do agree that a certain level of professionalism should be displayed in written materials unless of course there's a common light-hearted theme throughout.

I hope you guys aren't that uptight. Loosen that belt.

Not sure anyone was "crying" about it. Three or four people were merely expressing a view; lamenting the fact that standards are in decline.

There are a number of measures by which standards can be seen to be in decline; bad language, lazy speech, lack of manners, lack of civility, lack of respect are perhaps chief amongst them.

Frankly I find strange the fact that you think the following scenario is okay; namely, if I am sitting on a train with my two young children and a group of people opposite are talking about the night before and the fact that they got S*** faced, W***ered, and at the end of the evening had a fight with a load of *****, then thats perfectly okay so long as the sentences that contain the profanity are perfectly formed and gramatically correct [8|]

I have no problem with bad language in itself - indeed there are times when only a really well placed use of a four letter word really hits the spot. But like everything there is a time and a place; a computer game manual, read by children, is not the correct place in my opinion.

Its just an opinion - but to suggest that anyone holding it is ridiculous, uptight, or someone to be laughed at is a bit of a shame.

I have kids. I swear like a trooper - but I do not swear in front of my kids. I think the "establishment" should uphold those values or at the very least allow me to uphold them - my kids hear and probably say worse - what I'm talking about is the desensitisation of swearing.

Swearing has a place and it can get your point across forcefully - however, if over used, it loses it's "spike". If you know what I'm talking about and are still ok with swearing becoming commonplace regardless of the audience, then you'll find before long 4 and 5 years olds using it and no-one will bat an eyelid.

As an example - there's a word used commonly on the gaming circuit and, I've recently discovered, in the public place - rape. "You raped me on TF2 last night" - "I was facebook raped last night"....this word has very exceptional meaning. It's tied to a horrendous, disgusting act of violence and is now being used commonplace. Now the more that word is used, the less "abhorrent" it sounds - even when linked to the act ual crime.

That's what I'm talking about...swear words becoming common place to have an effect two fold - 1. that younger and younger kids will think there's nothing wrong with it and 2. desensitisation of the effects of the words. This is becoming increasingly worse with mobile phones - because people forget the "public" space they're in and decide to have their loud mouthed, foul language conversations in public and assault everyones ears with it - including my two children - with whom, as I pointed out, I do not swear in front of.

oh - and my point with the DJ Chris Moyles is this - he's on early in the morning till 10 am - a BIG kids audience waiting for him. Now I don't use the phrases he uses in front of my children - I find it offensive to me that I have to pay the BBC to have him do it for me!

I have no children. Perhaps this is why you're a bit more sensitive to the issue of swearing. I don't swear in front of kids, because I think it's in bad taste. I do slip once in a while, but try to catch myself when I can. It's just common sense to hold your tongue in certain circumstances.

Don't put words in my mouth. I did not say the scenario you so eloquently described was okay. As a matter of fact, I never brought up kids at all. I'm talking about adult language spoken by adults with tact taken into consideration. But I DO find it rather ridiculous and uptight that an adult would find certain words offensive or insulting by themselves. After all, words alone mean nothing--It's the context with which they're used.

But I see your issue with it. Since I don't have children, I don't think about some of these things. Please accept my apology if I pi**ed you off.

I play and throw away cos 99.9999999999999999999999% of games have NO lasting appeal.....I certainly wont be playing any games on my hard drive in 20 years anyway...granted there are time si wiosh I could play a game I have ditched BUT I'm sure if I installed it again it wouldn't stay on my hard drive there was a reason it left in the first place...

Well I guess you never played Master of Magic and wanted to play it again? Let's see how about Alpha Centauri? You never want to play that again? Oh wait you don't like civilization games as I recall? So you're telling me you're going to toss BftB away an $80 game and have no interest in playing it 20 years from now? I have a laptop full of old DOS games I play and some are 20 years old or near abouts. Renegade Legion Interceptor is still one of the best tactical space fighter games around. And let's not forget all of Matrixgames titles that will still be being played and sold (hopefully) 20 years from now. What about Steel Panthers? Don't tell me you've taken that one off your hard drive? Combat Missions? Lord I hope someone shoots me if I ever remove those from my hard drive. There's plenty of games already 10 years old that are still great today. Many 15 to 20 years old as well. Come on guys tell him all the old games you still play (if your computer will let you) that are older than dirt!
