Tony and I have just had a long conversation on strategy and the way forward. Here are the revised plans.
The attack on Sumatra is off.
The focus will be on the SEASIA area and nth PNG to Phillipines.
Sumatra
This was going to be a mixed force of UK forces (3-4 Div) and Pacific Ocean forces (2 Marine Divs plus supporting troops). It would have included 1.5 divs of Armour. The aim was to land and then make Palembang untenable.
The biggest issue was the risk. KB is remaining in the area, and the potential loss of several divisions at sea, while "unlikely" is still high for comfort. We have mitigated the risk, but now other options are more viable, with a lower risk profile and similar strategic endstates.
The disadvantage of not following through is that the Japanese will continue to have access to a lot of resources, but we intend to make it hard for them to use it!
SEASIA
The 3-4 Divs of UK forces at Madras preping for Sumatra will now instead move to Rangoon, and move down to attack Bangkok. Once Bankok is taken we will head to Vietnam, leaving a blocking force at the top of the Malay peninsula. This plays to our strengths of ground cpombat and air power.
Phillipines
The US forces currently at Perth (2 USMC divs) will now be committed to an early invasion of the Phillipines. This is now a priority. We will thread the needle of The Moluccas on one side and the Marianas on the others. This will leave a long exposed flank. Australian Bdes will be freed up to act as garrisons. The entire SOPAC forces are curently free as well...
CV's
With at least some of the Japanese CV fleet in the Indian Ocean, and a few damaged in port, ours will stay concentrated, first supporting the clean up of the Marshall Islands (allowing transports to move from the west coast without management) then to support the Phillipines.
The attack on Sumatra was shaping up to be a fun operation, however the risk profile was higher than we would have liked. We are using methodical battle at the moment, which has succedded nicely, which is low risk and plays to the Allies advantages, while minimising risks (in particular the Brit forces being made combat ineffective due to losses).
We need to start pushing in China so they can't afford to move too much stuff out.
So we intend to tackle the empire by grabbing them around the "neck" (head being Japan, the body being the DEI) and strangle them... with extreme predjudice.
Itel though is already reporting forces moving into the Phillipines, so they have already identified the threat... looks like a race may be on!

KB in the Phillipines
Having part of KB off Cebu is an interesting and unwelcome change.
The good news is we know exactly where it is, and its strength.
And that its intervention didn't help take Cebu.
The bad news is it is 25 Hexes from our invasion site, and could be interfering with the invasion of Boela in 2-3 days (about 1 day too late to stop us).
We are now one day from landing at Boela. This landing force has most of our available assault shipping, so should unload very quickly. It has a lot of BB's and CA's for protection.
The worst course of action for us would see that part of KB charge on the invasion site. We could loose capital ships and transports (our most critical componant).
Combined with an air assault out of Ambon/Kendari we could see a massive battle!
But they know it is under the protection of a lot of air cover, and they may think Ambon is the target, as we have continued to bomb Boela...
I'll discuss with Tony but I think the invasion will go ahead.
If they do intervene this is a good opportunity to pull some Japanese CV teeth. And they know there are some CV in the area, but not where the rest are... that should make them cautious.
With so many BB's they are the likely target of the enemy aircraft, and we can afford to loose some, and they have all upgraded at least once so they should chew up their air forces. We have decent support bases close to hand that we can repair in.
The worst case would see our transports caught at sea with troops still aboard, I don't think that will happen, and we are unlikely to loose a lot of transports.
To mitigate this the 10-14 subs in the area will vector in to help.
The other good news is that we know there are no significant forces in the CENTPAC so the attacks there can speed up!
Tony wants me to hit Ambon with B-24 next turn.
If we can chew them up then the CV's can swing around to help with the Phillipines confident of CV superiority.
In summary while this is a risk the pay off is that we can pull some CV teeth, well within the coverage of our ground based airpower, with the biggest risk the loss of assault shipping, when more is flowing in anyway.
If we can culminate their airpower at this point then the next step will be easier...

After an investigation into the incident it appears the Commander had been "distracted" by the appearance of a pretty young thing and while he had "deployed himself" he forgot to order his forces to deploy, hence they were caught in "March Mode".
The young thing had recently arrived from the south... and might be a plant.
Thats the trouble when cavalry officers are given command of large forces...

Overall a good turn. I expected (planned worst case) for them to sortie all their Netties and have KB rush in. Instead they continue to preserve their airpower. Ambon is heavily damaged and the bombardments their will continue to close it down. Boela should fall next turn and the engineers and baseforces can then land. Maybe they will comit KB then...
Things are moving again in the CENTPAC as well, we want to clean this out ASAP.

Overall a good turn. I expected (planned worst case) for them to sortie all their Netties and have KB rush in. Instead they continue to preserve their airpower. Ambon is heavily damaged and the bombardments their will continue to close it down. Boela should fall next turn and the engineers and baseforces can then land. Maybe they will comit KB then...
Things are moving again in the CENTPAC as well, we want to clean this out ASAP.

Our pools of fighters are good, but LB of all types are lacking. Production does start to pick up a bit now though.

We claim a CV (almost certain false report), 4 DD, 1 SS and 2 xAK and 2 xAKL.

Things are very favorable here for us. We have recon units around Bangkok, which aren't being attacked, we have cut the road/rail to Malaya and have about 1300 AV ar Mergui (mostly Chinese).
In north Thailand we have created a pocket of enemey troops.
We have a 2000 AV army curretly resting and repairing before moving on Bangkok. More forces are on the way... 170,000 troops and 100k of supply are loading at Madras.
There is a convoy of 90k of supply about to go into Rangoon.
Port Blair looks like they have pulled Cadres out, but will leave the rest. we have 10 subs in the area.

Our next two targets are Sorong and Morotai. The aim is to move on them within 2 months. You can see we are flouding the area with subs, another 6 are on the way. Kendari is the main base, but can't really interfere effectively now. We may look at also taking Manado.
Babeldoab on the right is also a major base, we aren't reconong it but will soon begin...

Timor. We continue to recon and bomb Dili. Last turn Tojo from the island NW of Dili interferred, we are sweeping that Island this turn.
At Boela the AP and AKA are fully unloaded, there is over 800 AV ashore. The Div that was 100% prepped for Boela suffered almost no loss, the other (100% preped for Ambon) had about 25% disabled. There isn't enough supply ashore yet long term, but plenty for a week of fighting... I'm hoping the shock attack next turn will take the base.
Kaimana ( the Dutch base in the middle) is providing good air cover, with the main bomber force (that trashed Ambon last turn) is at Aru.
Talking of Ambon it looks like they have pulled their forces out, with only damaged aircraft left...

In the CENTPAC we now control the Marshalls, next stop is Roi-Namur
Next turn all the Allied CVs will strike Truk, there are lost of ships, in particular subs, in the port according to recon.
They will be supported by about 30 B-24 from Kavieng.
We know KB isn't home, and our recon is reporting ships and ground troops but no aircraft. The CV's and the Marshall Is invasion force are completely undetected... we think!
We also plan to take Kusaie and Ponope using SOPAC forces... then isolate Truk.
It looks like they have pulled everything they can back to Guam, Tinan and Saipan, 4 5 and 6 Aflds at the moment. Truk will probably be held so we have to either invade or accept the risk of it in our flank... As the Phillipines are our goal we will accept the risk.

The area that I have circled has also been a bit active.
Tony will have to explain what he is planning on doing here, but we want to start applying presure now that supply is improving so they can't afford to strip the area...
The Chinese fighter units are reaching reasonable skill levels, and mostly equipped with the P-66 Vanguard. P-40E are begining to arrive in a trickle. Level bombers (like everywhere for the Allies) are scarce.

Elsewhere though our attacks against the isolated units in Nth Thailand are repulsed.
Otherwise the usual air attacks mostly on Bankok, which go in without opposition. More supplies are unloading in Rangoon.

Summary. The weather has an impact during the turn. KB is commited mostly to the airdefence of Ambon, where it didn't do a lot, the B24 usually came in without being intercepted. The strike planes, for whatever reason (certainly weather on day 2) didn't sortie against the TF unloading at Boea, only 5 hex away.
We unload lots of supply at Boela (around 20k), but the 25th div (the elements in xAP) are still not unloaded. Netties sorting from Kendari, with no fighter protection, face a weak CAP and over 2 days put four tops into our BB, but attack no other ships. Around 20 Nell are lost. The BB is at 76 float, has fires and is now disbanded in Boela... it may survive, but may not.
Sorong also cops a bit from B-17 getting some Sally on the ground.
All the other TF in the area, except a SCTF at Kaimana, are withdrawing. There are several TF at Aru though... if KB sorties deep then it could be nasty for both sides... but based on their previous play this is unlikely.

Overall I think we were a bit lucky, our losses are very low (maybe a BB), we sank 16 subs, got ashore in strength with plenty of supply. OTOH it was carefully planned, and I can't believe all those subs were just sitting there!
Planning is now underway for the Sorong and Morotai invasions. Sorong is as little as two weeks away... maybe we will bring over our CV's, culminate KB then we have open season in the SWPAC...
A couple of observations.
AKA/AP are awesome and are probably the Allies key ship in 1942/1943. I'd now rate them more important than BB!
LRCAP and CAP in general cannot stop even unescorted strikes.
Allied ship bourne defensive AA is still relatively weak in late 1942.

Summary. The weather has an impact during the turn. KB is commited mostly to the airdefence of Ambon, where it didn't do a lot, the B24 usually came in without being intercepted. The strike planes, for whatever reason (certainly weather on day 2) didn't sortie against the TF unloading at Boea, only 5 hex away.
We unload lots of supply at Boela (around 20k), but the 25th div (the elements in xAP) are still not unloaded. Netties sorting from Kendari, with no fighter protection, face a weak CAP and over 2 days put four tops into our BB, but attack no other ships. Around 20 Nell are lost. The BB is at 76 float, has fires and is now disbanded in Boela... it may survive, but may not.
Sorong also cops a bit from B-17 getting some Sally on the ground.
All the other TF in the area, except a SCTF at Kaimana, are withdrawing. There are several TF at Aru though... if KB sorties deep then it could be nasty for both sides... but based on their previous play this is unlikely.

Overall I think we were a bit lucky, our losses are very low (maybe a BB), we sank 16 subs, got ashore in strength with plenty of supply. OTOH it was carefully planned, and I can't believe all those subs were just sitting there!
Planning is now underway for the Sorong and Morotai invasions. Sorong is as little as two weeks away... maybe we will bring over our CV's, culminate KB then we have open season in the SWPAC...
A couple of observations.
AKA/AP are awesome and are probably the Allies key ship in 1942/1943. I'd now rate them more important than BB!
LRCAP and CAP in general cannot stop even unescorted strikes.
Allied ship bourne defensive AA is still relatively weak in late 1942.

Summary. To my suprise KB thrusts forward (see map below). This is probably because they now know where our CV's are. Considering what it could have hit (the Aussie 8th Div unloading at Aru, several replenishment tanker forces two SCTF, the CVE TFetc etc) the loss of around 6-8 xAP isn't bad at all! We also lost 3 APD's and about 10 xAK/L.
Our CAP wasn't concentrated or that effective. Next turn it will be different.
On our side we countered with some Avengers and B-17, they did nothing but keep the CAP occupied, although the escourting fighters at times did ok. I don't have the aircraft claims at the moment.

Our CV's trash the airfields at Truk. We also hit it with B-24. I'm hoping I can keep it supressed now with B-17 until we can get a bit closer.
We land at Roi Namur and take it. Note the low AV on our side, lacking in prep. This is an opportunity attack. We now "own" the Marshalls, uness KB visits
