Hey Michael. Good advice...

Am having to stop my Postings at this point due to heavy Krautburger activity within the house. We have Grammy over and are working on mass-production of about 100 of these fellas to freeze and delightfully consume throughout the winter---YUM!

Installing Question

Post by John 3rd »

Just got this email and thought I would Post it here due to a strong fear of NOT being able to effectively communicate and solve this issue:

Hi,

sorry for approaching you this directly with my question, but I didn't want to post it in your AAR, which is excellent btw!
I have downloaded this scenario and wanted to ask you, me being still quite new to all this, how and where I should put all the files - as I already tried copying the ART folder where it's supposed to go and the SCEN stuff as well - yet the scenario didn't show as an option - any help would be much appreciated - thanks
cheers,

Roland

Ambon Stalemate

Post by John 3rd »

Combat Report
January 7-11, 1942
Eastern DEI

A stalemate is settling over the Ambon region. Every small Japanese Infantry unit has been moved to Ambon but it isn't enough to dislodge the Allies holding the base. VERY frustrating!

The land stalemate does not imply no action, however, there has been lots of activity. Ternate now has a Lvl-2 AF and so I moved Chutai of Zero, Val, and Kate onto the field. They and surface forces immediately go into action. On the 10th the Vals hit an AP while the Kates add bombs to another AP.

The Cruiser TF that rests at Ternate then sweeps in and sinks an AP on the 11th.

Combat Report
January 7-11, 1942
Balikpapan and Soerabaja

As already stated Balikpapan fell with only slight damage to the facilities. [&o][&o][&o]

CarDiv2 had been covering the operation and in the process many ships were spotted at Soerabaja. As fast as I can I move Zero and Betty to the AF and use them for a coordinated attack on the shipping within that harbor. The Japanese hit the Port for three straight days. There is no aerial opposition whatsoever.

Ships sunk: CL DeRuyter, DD Banckert and Vendetta, SS Pickerel--Sargo--S-40, an AR, 13 AMc, 2 TK, 2 AK, and an AO. Pretty good work...

The SS total is now above 15 confirmed sunk at this point.

I am forced to retire CARDIV2 due to a sortie shortage. An AKE arrives at Manado and I rendezvous with it and replenish my CVs from it. Will send CARDIV2 towards Darwin again and then link-up with the remains of my CVE TF.

(This is foreshadowing for the battle that takes place at Palembang and Batavia!)

How many Aces can a Chutai have?

Post by John 3rd »

Combat Report
January 7-11, 1942
Western DEI and Singapore

Heavy Combat in the air, on land, and on the sea! Area-by-Area:

Singapore--The Japanese gather themselves and crossover the Johore on January 9th. I bring so much force that the crossing is at nearly 2-1 (1119 to 607)! Looking at the troops on the 10th shows them to be heavily disrupted so I decide to rest the boys a couple of days. Since we dropped the Forts on the crossing then I thoroughly expect to take the base on my next attack. Outstanding!

Palembang--The 38th ID lands at the base on the 7th and is attacked by an ABDA TF comprised of CLs Java, Tromp, Dragon, Durban, and two DD. As shown earlier in the AAR, I had 2 CA, 2 CL, and 2 DD embedded within the Invasion Force to protect the AKs from CD. These warships move out handsomely and CRUSH the Allied TF! ALL four Allied CL sink and the two DDs are hit. For this I lose a SC and get DD Isonami heavily damaged. The DD disbands in Port and will make it.

Palembang is taken on the 8th in a swift assault that sees absolutely NO DAMAGE done to the refineries and oil fields. As Qball noted earlier this is SOOOOOOO huge it cannot be overstated. Add to this a bunch of supplies and fuel and life looks pretty good.

Tandjoengpinang--(the base due south of Singapore) gets invaded on the 11th by a Naval Guard unit. It will fall tomorrow.

CVE TF
As CARDIV2 pounded Soerabaja and then left to replenish, the Taiyo--Hosho TF continued providing support to the Palembang Invasion Force as well as itself. They were BUSY! How about a day-by-day?

7th--LR CAP over Palembang gets 6 Allied planes shot down. No attack upon the TF.

8th--LR CAP bags another 4 planes, however the TF comes under attack by PBY, Buffalo, and various bombers. CAP protects the TF by shooting down 7 Fighters, 6 PBY, and 5 Bombers. Though planes get through and drop they all miss their targets. Palembang falls...

9th--CVE retire to Sinagkawang to refuel and re-provision. Recon spots Dutch shipping moving out along the north coast, passing Batavia, and leaving through Merak. Keep in mind that Soerabaja is getting pounded at this time. I re-order the TF to move down towards Batavia but stay at least 4-5 hexes away.

10th--TF moves into position and hits two AP with bombs at Merak. Bad weather prevents any attacks upon the TF.

11th--The weather clears and the Allies throw EVERYTHING they have at the little CVEs! Here come the attack waves:
a. 16 Zero vs. 4 Fighter and 6 PBY--all 4 Fighters and 4 PBY are shot down

b. 13 Zero vs. 11 B-339 and 6 Dutch Bombers--No losses for 5 Fighters and 4 Bombers

c. 9 Zero vs. 5 Demon and--OHHHHHH HELL!!!--8 Vildebeest--All 5 Fighters are shot down but the Vildebeest plow in and hit the Hosho FIVE times! CRAP!!! The lucky streak ends as she slides beneath the waves. Luckily 7 of 9 Zeros and 4 of 6 Kate bingo over to Palembang.

d. 9 Zero vs. 18 F and 24 Bombers--YIKES--the Zeros shot down 2 Fighters and 2 Bombers in exchange for 1 Zero. With great fear I watch the bombers attack and--PRAISE BE--they all miss!

Afternoon Attacks:
a. 8 Zero vs. 2 PBY and 8 Vildebeests---ALL shot down!!!

b. 6 Zero vs. 2 Bombers--Both shot down.

c. 10 Zero vs. 21 F and 21 Bombers--1 Zero goes down in exchange for 3 Fighters and 5 Bombers

TOTALS: 2 Zero for 19 Fighters, 10 Bombers, 6 PBY, and 10 Vildebeest. Great exchange but it costs me my smallest CVE.

LONG LIVE Hosho! BANZAI! BANZAI!! BANZAI!!!

John, what's a krautburger?

Sorry Bruce--I didn't see your note on the AAR. A Krautburger (a non-PC title in this day and age) is also known as a Cabbage Pocket. VERY German. It is a pastry stuffed with cabbage and hamburger. The preferred dip is ketchup which makes it highly popular with little Cochran boys!

We cranked out about 80 of the things, baked them, and now they are in the freezer.

My kids are pretty much 50% English-Irish and 50% Prussian. Thsi predisposes my sons to corned beef and cabbage. Paula's family name is von Henneck (well just Henneck because they dropped the von) and they take pride in their German heritage. The Krautburgers are a manifestation, among many other cultural-specific dishes.

"Way Up North"

Post by John 3rd »

Combat Report
January 12-15, 1942
The Great White North

As noted in my earlier Posting I have been planning to move the KB up north to raid the Anchorage/Kodiak/Gulf of Alaska area. This was prompted by my gut feeling that Lew would try to counter-punch in this region due to its remoteness.

It appears my 'gut' was right on the mark.

The KB refuels on the 11th and begins to move north-northeast. The AO that start the game carrying KB's fuel is finally eghausted with this refueling. Those AO have really kept their CVs and Escorts in great shape. I send them to Truk (300,000 Fuel present) to reload and get some R&R. In planning ahead, I have a group of 6 slower 8,000 Fuel-Size AO up at Attu and I order it to move SE and rendezvous with KB.

The 12th appears to be a normal crappy day in the North but my attention is riveted when Dutch Harbor reports an SBD overhead. Getting a little excited I order the 6 DD present at the base as well as 3 AK unloading supply and a Construction Bn to clear out and move towards Attu.

Sure enough--the 13th--has the USS Yorktown and 4 DD (NO OTHER escort) run smack into a pair of separate AMC I had just sent to raid the Gulf of Alaska area. It is the reverse of what happened with the KB. This time I have Surface units trying to get at a CV. Shots are fired in both situations but no real damage is done either way. The Yorktown is SE by about 7 hexes of Dutch Harbor! Later in the day the AMC are spotted and sunk by Yorktown in the afternoon. KB moves north but is at least 2-3 days away...

The 14th proves to be a lively day for the defenders of Dutch Harbor. They have hardly had the chance to settle into their American made base when the morning silence is shattered by the crash of large-caliber naval shells striking the perimeter. Sure enough--BB Warspite, 2 US CA, 1 CL , and a few DD are bombarding the base! Hornet stays in the area and attacks the base as well in the afternoon with 8 F4F, 23 SBD, and 9 TBD. Damage is fairly minimal but the BB Bombardment does cause 372 Casualties.

Wow. OK. Opportunity awaits! KB is 1-2 days away...

On the 15th, I order KB to move NE to try and get in behind the Allied Forces. Nothing is spotted by my Jakes flying from the Adak or from the KB. I have the KB Jakes set for range 9 with Zeros and Kates set for the same. I allow for MAX TF reaction and anxiously await the dawn of the 16th...

The Allied Bombardment TF must retire to Anchorage and I will bet the same is said for Yorktown. The KB's sorties are good and I have the Support Force carrying 45,000 fuel. The Fleet should be able to operate up here for at least 10-14 days without issue.

Going on a Kodiak Bear hunt...

On the Plains

Combat Report
January 7-16, 1942
North and Central China

With no movement by the Chinese whatsoever, the Japanese continue their work at both a short and a deep envelopment of Chengchow-Loyang-Tsiaotso. There are major develops within the plan and actual combat making the situation LOOK excellent! The Chinese have effectively been cutoff from reinforcement and supply with the final road being taken by the 35th ID on the 13th.

Short Envelopment: Shown in Pink in the Scrennshot
Chengchow has the 36th ID and an Engineering Regiment present and they have began to bombard the garrison. There are 11 units with a strength of about 30,000 men. Three of these units are HQ and two more a Construction. Once I get the 32nd ID and a Field Artillery unit in the hex I will launch my first real attack. This should be in about 2-3 days. If these two ID are not enough the 35th ID is moving down to join the attack. Should also note that 12th Army HQ is present aiding the attack here.

Loyang has 9 units within it and a reported strength of 63,000 men. It looks to be a harder nut to crack at the moment.

Tsiaotso has 5 Chinese units within it facing an equal strength of North China Area HQ (prep 55% for Chengchow), 4 Mixed Brigades, and a Recon TK unit. The Japanese will soon be reinfroced by 2 Ind Regiments and 1st Army HQ.

Deep Envelopment: Shown in Red on the Screenshot
Nanyang FALLS to my first attack on the 10th! Wow. The 40th and 13th ID begin to move NE up the road to aid in the reduction of Chengchow and Loyang. They bring 3 Artillery units with them. To hold the newly gained town I have an Ind Regiment of Inf and an Eng Regiment moving in. For the moment 11th Army HQ is stationed here.

East of Sian--The 41st ID and 4th Ind Mixed Brig (plus 1 Artillery and TK Regiment) continue to drive their Chinese opponents due west towards Sian. The Chinese have been kicked back now three hexes and show no sign of reinforcements arriving to help them.

There are all sorts of other smaller action occurring as I clean-up the hexes behind the Japanese lines. These little actions are shown in the light blue on the Screnshot.

PLAN:
1. I will follow FatR's advice and capture Chengchow first to drive those units back into Loyang.

2. The same will be said for the Chinese in Tsiaotso.

3. The combined Japanese Army will then crush the retreated troops and garrison of Loyang and drive them into the forest across the river from Loyang.

I want to beat them up and make them ineffective--NOT make them SURRENDER where they can come back at 33% strength.

The Combined Army will then advance and take Sian. Yenan will be on the list after that...

The Southside

Post by John 3rd »

Combat Report
January 7-16, 1942
Southern China

Action in South China is not nearly so large or complicated. There has been highly positive developments but nothing on the Grand Scale of the Central Plains.

The Chinese are being pushed and/or driven out of areas where I need to open roads and create clear supply lines. This being the plan in this area of China, the Japanese move out:

Chuhsian falls on January 8th with the 13th and 39th ID moving out due south to invest Wenchow. The 116th ID is about to move into Chuhsian to provide the makings of a garrison.

Wenchow has five Chinese units in it and the 2 ID just arrived so we'll launch a deliberate attack tomorrow and see what the Japanese are up against for the moment.

The 22nd ID provides the garrison of Hangchow west of Shanghai. It will soon be freed up by a Brigade moving out from Shanghai. Once able to move, this ID will clean-up the Chinese units west and north of it.

In another major surprise, the 104th ID (fresh from its victory at Hong Kong) advances and CAPTURES Wuchow on the 13th! I did not expect to take the city on the first try. The ID and its 3 Artillery units are sitting in Wuchow resting and trying to figure out where they might want to go...

As can be seen on the Screenshot--supply is rather short in this region at the moment.

3)Unpack the rest of the files into Art folder.

I was wondering, does the reluctant admiral scenario use the garrison requirements introduced in one of the later patches, or is it based off the earlier scenarios that had lighter requirements for the Japanese in India ?

Singapore FALLS!

Post by John 3rd »

Combat Report
January 12-16, 1942
Western DEI

Malaya
Singapore--Though it took about a 10 days longer then planned, Singapore falls on January 14, 1942. The Japanese launched an assault on the 12th that netted a 2-1 result but the garrison didn't surrender (Forts went to Zero) so I waited a couple of days an hit it again. 3 HDML are scuttled and 22,040 troops become POWs.

Georgetown--This island is grabbed on the first attack by the Imperial Guards on the 15th. Two more HDML are scuttled and 1845 POWs are taken.

The Imperial Guards shall wait here and begin prepping for Sabang. Shipping is already moving around Singapore and will be there in two days. Intend to have Sabang no later then the 21st. Can jump to India at that point...

I have 4 Inf Reg and 4 TK units moving around the central portion of the Malay Peninsula and expect them to finish the job within 10 days or so.

Two ID are resting in Singapore and they will join the Imperial Guards as the initial core of the Left Hook going into India.

Sumatra
Palembang--Base Forces and an Air Flotilla has arrived so a good number of aircraft can now be run from this airdrome.

Troops move out from Palembang driving the enemy and heading for their next set of targets.

Borneo
From Balikpapan the Makassar and Bandjermasin Invasion Forces depart. There is still a possibility of Allied interference so a BB, CA, CL, and 6dd is assigned to protect each TF.

CARDIV2
Hiryu and Soryu move across Java from east to west and fly strikes at shipping and the Port of Batavia. Net results are pretty good: 2 AVP, 7 AMc, 1 AM, and S-36 are sunk. Additionally, 4 AKL, 1 AGP, 2 AG, an AD, and an AS are hit in Port. CARDIV2 retires to replenish at Singkawang for the next day or two before moving past Singapore and heading for the IO.

To be honest, I don't know. The most recent RA, Scenario 70 was fully updated with the most recent patch before being released so I believe the answer is yes.

NOT looking forward to that, however, my plans are for a limited offensive into this region. I want the Dacca--Calcutta area and that is about it. BUFFER ZONE comes to mind as well as getting to use the HI, resources, etc...

Apologies, I actually meant China instead of India. It seems I wasn't paying too much attention. I don't think patches would have changed the garrison requirements if you had already started working on RA before the patch as the patches only change the official scenarios.

It certainly FEELS like I need many 1,000s to hold these cities. This is pretty realistic and once the Central Plains Offensive is over I shall have to spread out some units to make sure garrison requirements are met. Am losing some VP right now since I've grabbed and then moved on...
