At least for today… the Baby KB did not run at will.

Jap air bombing raids continue against airfield facilities in Palembang.

Japanese amphibious landing is underway at Pontianek. Allied ground forces in Pontianek consist of Dutch and British base force LCU’s with little or no assault strength, mainly units that were chased into Pontianek from other Allied bases in SW Borneo captured by the Japanese. AAR’s of landing ops in Pontianek follow.

Elements of Allied LCU’s with combat and/or engineer elements that had been in or reached Pontianek have been airlifted to Palembang to reinforce defensive and (oil production) demolition operations there.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It would appear that Pillager is capturing major bases surrounding Palembang before moving in to capture Palembang itself. Perhaps something about my use of Dutch and USAAF level bombers over Tarakan, Samarinda and Balikpapan to attack oil production facilities after their capture by Jap forces could have registered in Pillager’s thought process.

Malaya: 46 Japanese LCU’s detected in Singapore along with 150 transport ships in port. Allied subs remain on patrol around Singapore to intercept any Jap transports leaving there.

Cargo transported aboard ships in convoy EX-3 include 126,000 supply, 60,000 fuel and eight LCU’s. All LCU's aboard the convoy are bound for SW Pacific or South Pacific commands.

LCU’s aboard ships in convoy EX-3 include two base force units (135 USA and 1 USMC Air Wing), four engineer units (810 & 811 EAB, 2/151 Combat Engr Bn and Bobcat USN Construction Bn) and 276 Coastal Artillery Bn.

Estimated time of arrival of convoy EX-3 in Capetown is 28-30 days.

DEI: Jap light carrier forces appear to have retired from the western Java Sea. No detected Jap task forces in the western Java Sea area this game turn, also no reported contacts in this area between Allied submarines and Jap TF’s. US and Dutch submarines are now concentrating at the western entrance to the Java Sea near Toboali and Billiton.

SS Thresher launches 4 torpedoes at xAK Misaku Maru

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DEI: Jap light carrier forces detected again off Muntok moving on a SE heading possibly re-entering the western Java Sea. If so, the Baby KB’s projected movement will take it directly across a 2-3 hex deep submarine “minefield” covering the western approaches to the Java Sea. Small gifts are nice if I can manage to get a shot at them. An air strike from the Jap CVL force attacked airfield facilities in Batavia. AAR follows.

Airfield Attack: 2 x 250 kg GP Bomb

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jap LBA level bomber attacks continue against Dutch LCU’s in Palembang. Minor Dutch casualties reported.

A Japanese fighter sweep (10 A6M2 Zeroes) appeared over Soerabaja, did not engage Dutch fighter squadrons in Soerabaja on training missions. A later unescorted Jap bombing raid (4 Ki-48 Lily) over Soerabaja was intercepted by the Dutch training flights reinforced by other scrambled fighters. Three of the four attacking Ki-48’s were shot down. This is the second time in 3 turns this “phenomena” occurred. A piece of unexpected behavior by the AE program, though certainly not an unwelcome one.

The unidentified Jap LCU (possible division-strength) again detected in the adjacent hex immediately E of Batavia.

A number of actions between Japanese ships and several Allied subs forming a patrol barrier in the Makassar Strait north of Balikpapan. AAR’s follow.

Summary of Operations 2/09/42

South Pacific: Sigint report entries for 2/9 indicate heavy volume of intercepted Jap radio transmissions from Tabiteuea (Gilbert Is) and Truk.

Sigint report for 2/9 is also indicating Jap 1 Garrison Unit is now located on Tabiteuea. 1 Garrison Unit started the game in Manchuria as part of the Kwantung Army. In our previous CHS match, Pillager transferred numerous Jap LCU’s from Manchuria to garrison bases in the Pacific theatres. I was anticipating in AE that he would continue the practice of deploying LCU’s from Manchuria to the Pacific theatres, so I don’t find this report particularly shocking.

Australia: Elements of 27 Australian Brigade (AIF) arrived in Perth this game turn after their evacuation from Singapore via the DEI. Current strength of 27 Brigade is at 10% of TOE. Elements of 27 Brigade were transported out of Singapore by air to Palembang and from Palembang to Batavia using a second air transport. From Batavia the brigade moved overland to Tjilatjap, then by sea to Australia. Dutch Do-24 and PBY patrol seaplanes played a significant role in removing 27 Brigade elements from Singapore to Java.

Plans are to form a cadre of 8 Australian Division around 27 Brigade along with other sub-units of the division. Building 8 Australian Division to full TOE strength is expected to be a long-term project. Singapore fell to the Japanese before any attempt could be started to extract elements of 22 Australian Brigade.

DEI: Jap light carrier forces have re-entered the Java Sea and now operating off Batavia after breaking through the Allied submarine patrol line between Toboali and Kelapang. AAR’s of several actions between Allied subs and Jap carrier TF’s during the breakthrough follow.

Summary of Operations 2/10/42

2/42 Ship Upgrades: Allied ships eligible for upgrading in 2/42 are almost entirely DD’s and small AK’s with very few exceptions. Little or no ship repair activity has been underway in most Allied shipyards which is allowing 2/42 ship upgrades to be done aggressively at most of the Allied bases with shipyards where ship(s) eligible for 2/42 upgrades are currently based. Upgrade priority is being given to DD’s as ASW and/or AA improvements to these ships will have the greatest immediate value. Scheduling of individual ships for upgrade is subject to any requirements that these ships be available for use in operations at sea. Upgrades to most of these ships are already complete or now underway.

South Pacific: Sigint report entry for 2/10 states radio transmissions intercepted from a Japanese ship identified as ACM Yoshino Maru located NE of Auckland (hex 121,181). While it is highly unlikely a Jap minefield tender could be operating in an Allied-controlled open sea area off New Zealand, the possible source of the reported radio transmission does warrant investigation. NZ aircraft and a US submarine are being dispatched from Auckland to investigate this contact. No Allied surface naval or carrier forces are operating in the immediate area (the closest being Force N on patrol SE of the Solomons).

Individual Allied transport ships and small transport TF’s are moving between Auckland and Suva which justifies investigating the reported Jap transmission. Allied transport ships and auxiliaries now in port at Auckland are being sortied and moving southward at full speed towards Wellington as a precaution.

DEI: Japanese capture Buitenzorg. Jap ground forces now control all of western Java outside Batavia. Three Jap LCU’s (all believed to be division-strength) are now detected in Batavia base hex. AAR follows.

Well, finally got the new computer to work the program. Lost the previous game, so started a new one. This time Wake fell on Dec 23. Was unable, due to weather (can you believe that!) to intercept the enemy with carrier TF in area. Am at end of December. Only lost Wake. Enemy movements much less aggressive than last game--perhaps because of several, about eight, surface interceptions near DEI. Most of the enemy invasion forces were killed at sea. A IJN BB force was torn up by a RN cruiser force and forced to retire--I lost one cruiser. Have been able to start evac of Rangoon along with most of the force along the Malaya Pennisula up north of Georgetown They have been marching since Dec 8. Even got the Cebu Base force out (to Darwin), the Pt. Blair Force to India, and have moved and continue to move 200K fuel and 100K oil to Perth. Still trying to get more. Basically concentrating on establishing supply to vital ports (Perth, Sydney, Pago-Pago, Pearl, Colombo). Have all the LCUs and most of the Air Groups (including VF-121 off of Wake) set to training. Currently bringing escorts to SD for Yorktown. Will have four (two TFs) of CV operating around PH soon. All will be training air groups.

Thus far Surf groups off Canton and Palembang have intercepted the IJN advance. The KB has disappeared. Even the conquest of the Solomons is going slow. They must be setting something up, but for now the PI, DEI, Malayan Pen to Singapore, Solomons, South Pacific and Burma remain quiet. They are pushing the Chinese around, but what can you do? I am not sure if this caused the retreat in the South Pac, but the Wake relief force did stumble upon the KB replenishment force Southeast of Midway and sank five AOs, getting two more the next day. The KB immediately disappeared. Thus far, the KB has not ventured East of Truk since PH. They will be back, but for now, things are looking good. Once again, I appreciate your help. And in following your campaign, keep up the good work. I am learning much just trying to match your moves. I have even discovered how to form up the Aussie (and other) higher units. My learning curve is smoothing out. Out for now, johnjohn.

johnjohn,

Looks as if you're having an easy game vs the AI. While it does give you a chance to see what Allied ships and forces are capable of, keep in perspective a human Japanese opponent will give you no such opportunities if he can help it.
Was unable, due to weather (can you believe that!) to intercept the enemy with carrier TF in area.
And you can also be grateful the KB didn't see you either if it had been in the same area. Though sinking the KB's oilers may be a big contributing factor behind its absence - a valuable kill on your part. The KB will need to stay closer to home now that it's without a good part of its refuelling capacity.

I wasn't able to get much of any Allied LCU's out of Malaya, though I wasn't putting a lot of effort into it. Probably the most valuable LCU's to get out of Malaya is whatever parts (or all if you're fortunate enough to do so) that you can of 22 & 27 Australian Brigades as they make up the core of 8 Australian Division (along with several Bn-sized units in Australia). I was only able to extract maybe 10% of one Australian Brigade and nothing from the other brigade. I'll still be able to build 8 Australian Division though it will take a considerable amount of time and replacements from the pools.
Will have four (two TFs) of CV operating around PH soon. All will be training air groups.

Carrier air groups will also train when the carriers are in port.

All in all... keep up with the logistics and preparations in your rear areas. Whatever fuel, supply, resource, oil you get out of the DEI is good for a quick start on your rear area logistics and buildups - I sent nearly all of it to Australia. Your transports leaving the DEI, Philippines, Malaya for will probably get only a single one-way trip to Australia against a human Jap opponent, plan your ship cargoes and load everything you can.

Keep up the practice.

Summary of Operations 2/11/42

Central Pacific: Sigint report entry for 2/11 indicating heavy intercepted Jap radio transmissions from Kwajalein. An undetermined number of Jap ships are in port at Kwajalein along with an undetermined number of Jap aircraft based on the island. No Japanese TF’s detected at Kwajalein.

South Pacific: No Japanese ships or TF spotted or detected in the area near the location NE of Auckland (hex 121,181) where the Sigint report entry for 2/10 indicated radio transmissions intercepted from a Japanese ship identified in the entry as ACM Yoshino Maru. NZ naval search aircraft and a US submarine (S-35) are now operating in and over the sea area around the hex location.

Allied forces in and around northern New Zealand are standing down from last game turn’s alert.

DEI: Japanese begin ground assault on Batavia. AAR follows. Operational Dutch planes have flown out of Batavia, most of them to Soerabaja. Additional Jap LCU’s are disembarking at Kalidjati – three LCU’s (appear to be tank units) and several Jap TF’s detected in Kalidjati base hex.

Malaya: 211 Jap transport ships detected in port at Singapore. 42 Jap LCU’s detected in Singapore – all of these had been involved earlier in the Malayan campaign. Seven Allied subs are now operating in the sea hexes off Singapore and adjacent hexes of the Malacca Straits. Heavy Japanese air and surface ASW is also reported active in this sea area.

My plans in this area are to continue interference with Pillager’s sea transfer of Japanese LCU’s out of Singapore with whatever means available. This action is a key activity at the moment as Pillager now has concentrated in Singapore a major part of the available Japanese land forces operating outside the Chinese theatres. What is likely a major priority for Pillager at the present time is re-deploying Jap LCU’s from Singapore to other theatres (DEI, Philippines, Pacific areas) as smoothly and quickly as possible so the Japanese advance can continue. Any Allied move on my part to stall these transfers or inflict attrition on Japanese ships and/or LCU’s leaving Singapore will likely contribute to Allied defensive efforts across nearly all theatres.

AAR of one reported action between a Dutch sub and Jap surface ASW follows.

India: 6 Australian Division arrived at Colombo this game turn and is now disembarking. Short term plans are to use 6 Division to reinforce defenses on Ceylon, then move the division later to Australia once any threat of a Japanese invasion against Ceylon has passed. I had also done this in my last (CHS) match vs Pillager.

China: Hangyang captured by Japanese forces. AAR follows. Hengyang had been in the final stages of evacuation by Chinese forces after being defended to hold open the escape route for the successful withdrawal of Chinese LCU’s from the Kukong area that had been threatened with encirclement.

Summary of Operations 2/12/42

Central Pacific: Sigint report entry for 2/12 indicating heavy intercepted Jap radio transmissions from Tabiteuea (Gilbert Is). An undetermined number of Jap ships are in port at Tabiteuea along with an undetermined number of Jap aircraft based on the island and one detected Jap LCU.

Another entry in the Sigint report for 2/12 identifies the detected Jap LCU on Tabiteuea as 1st Garrison Unit. No Japanese TF’s detected at Tabiteuea.

Operations report entry for 2/12 indicates Tabiteuea port has expanded to size 2. Apparently either 1st Garrison Unit contains engineer elements and/or there's a second undetected Jap LCU located on Tabiteuea. Pillager is no doubt using this island as a forward base of some kind. What cannot be determined as of now is the significance of Tabiteuea as a base in the Japanese big picture.

Summary of Operations 2/13/42

Japanese Home Islands: SS Thresher intercepts small Jap transport convoy returning home. AAR follows.

SS Thresher

SS Thresher launches 6 torpedoes at PB Saishu Maru

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All but one of a group of US fleet subs patrolling south of the Japanese home islands have returned or are now returning to Pearl Harbor for replenishment and refit. Subs in this group had started the game in the Philippines and were sent northward to patrol off Japan until such time as they would have to return to base for replenishment. Setting the subs to operate independently in separate patrol zones with a home base of Pearl Harbor works nicely – the AE game program automatically dispatches the subs to return to their home base for replenishment when the sub’s fuel and/or ammunition supply becomes sufficiently depleted to require them to do so. A kudo to the AE developers on including this feature.

A relief force of two submarine patrol TF’s (9 US fleet subs total) is now enroute and will shortly take up patrol areas south of the Japanese home islands.

US West Coast: Two US destroyers dispatched from Los Angeles to meet and merge with an empty TK returning to the US intercepted a Jap submarine that was along the (previously unescorted) TK’s movement route into Los Angeles. AAR follows.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ASW attack near San Clemente Island at 223,79 (SW of Los Angeles)

Japanese Ships
SS I-17

Allied Ships
DD MacDonough

SS I-17 is sighted by escort

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Instead of ambushing (and probably sinking) an unescorted TK, the I-17 was engaged and forced under by two DD’s.

I established the practice of dispatching escort ships (DD, PC, etc) to meet and merge with incoming transports (moving unescorted) as they’re approaching their destination base with the intent of providing ASW coverage to these ships in sea areas immediately off the major port they are arriving at. A similar practice is also employed to escort transports as they’re departing from a major port.

To date, the practice is being used along the entire US & Canadian West Coast, near Hawaii, in sea areas near and between Sydney and Melbourne, also near Colombo and major ports in India. Plans are to expand this practice to other sea areas as more Allied escort ships become available.

My intent has been to incorporate this practice as part of the “universal” Allied ASW doctrine I’m establishing for AE. It’s not the first time this tactic worked, but this game turn’s action off Los Angeles is perhaps the best sample of its effectiveness so far.

Eastern US: Fast convoy EX-4 (11 ships, all rated 16 kts or higher speed) is departing next game turn for Australia via Capetown. Cargo loaded aboard ships in convoy EX-4 includes two US LCU’s (HQ II US Fighter Command, 206 Coast AA Rgt) plus 38500 supply and 39800 fuel.

South Pacific: Unescorted Japanese transport intercepted and sunk SW of Truk. AAR follows.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

RE: Sleepless on Samoa, the Sequel (wneumann vs Jolly Pillager)

Post by johnjohn »

Sounds like pillager is getting serious (just as you predicted). I finally have figured out how to strat move via RR. (Previously was marching everyone everywhere--sheesh.) I made it to January in one piece. The KB finally reappeared, chasing Force Z back to Trincomolee and smashing up a number of air bases in lower southeast DEI, which then were invaded. The allies--no where to be seen.

Meanwhile, out west, a cruiser force beat up Hosho and escorts near Canton Island on which I am making a determined stand (Marine Def BN, some ENG, and the fighter squadon from Wake and the DB squadron from Midway, including a cruiser SF and now a two CV TF since the KB is elsewhwere). I have also dispatched about 12,000 enemy invaders near Kuchan which I lost and then took back.[:D] The PI is falling, and I have started pulling out the fighter squadrons via withdrawal. Mainly trying to save the pilots.

Pago-Pago is my small base of operations supporting Canton Is. I have a number of support ships, AVDs and an AE based there. Fuel, which is coming in fast in furious is getting distributed all about since PP cannot hold much. Suva is my next move to build up. Then Noumea if it still is in my hands. Auckland is getting whumped up logistically as well, but most of my effort is going to Sydney and Perth.

I like your ASW approach on west coast and plan to duplicate it. Meanwhile, I have changed a number of leaders (Nimitz being the most significant--most are combat types for battalions and brigades. Am forming up in Burma, Imphal, and East India, getting the divisions organized and troops relocated. Have abandoned Rangoon area except for fighters. Am going to pull the AVG back to Mandalay once the enemy comes, but for now they have no troops north of Bangkok that I know about. China, for whatever reason, has turned into a real killing zone. I just keep pulling back.

This is proving to be a real learning experience as I start to master the various rules (especially for movement). In the Solomons the Lark BN and Rabaul Base force are jungle bunnies trying to get to Gasmata. And the three companies of Infantry around Lae are doing the same trying to just get out. For whatever reason, my squadrons at Port Moseby would not fly in to evacuate them before the IJN invaded. The pick up troops option lit up, but they would not pick them up. Dunno what I did wrong since it is supposed to work. So they are walking, 4 miles a day. It is going to take weeks if not months to get them out.

On the Malay the IJN and Army are finally getting organized. They are pushing everything back to Singapore, but just taking their time doing it. Meanwhile the fuel evac of Palembang still goes on. I think the ten convoys, some still loading and the rest hauling fuel and oil, will get nearly 300K of fuel out to Perth. Most made two trips, so not too bad. And learning to do all these things really makes me appreciate the game and all the game advice I am getting. I really appreciate it, and consider myself still fortunate that I have yet to do something really dumb. I have been reading some of the other confrontations (other allied threads) and the number of times a US CV force is lost is amazing. I still have mine and have no plans to put them at risk until the pilots have more experience. My hope is too hang in there until July when I then have six CVs to work with. Then I can work to stop the advance so that in 43 and 44 I can take everything back--and them some.

Once again, I disappear into the ether hoping that that shadow I see is not the Yamato! Johnjohn

johnjohn,

Strategic movement by rail is very handy wherever you can do it. Unfortunately it's often not available in places where you really need or want to use it.
The PI is falling, and I have started pulling out the fighter squadrons via withdrawal. Mainly trying to save the pilots.
My thought has been to save the pilots as well, and I pretty much did. Though the one thing about withdrawal is you're gonna lose the planes, so you might as well lose them in combat (you may shoot down a Jap plane or two with luck) before withdrawing the surviving pilots. Given that, my PI fighter squadrons basically fought to the last (operational) plane before I withdrew them.

One little FYI on withdrawing the PI fighter squadrons, they re-appear in Sydney with a full complement of P-40's though still with a withdrawal date of 3/42. You could find that handy.
Have abandoned Rangoon area except for fighters. Am going to pull the AVG back to Mandalay once the enemy comes

Keep in mind withdrawing the AVG squadrons to India will require a PP expenditure. Plan accordingly.

The most valuable thing about playing the AI is learning the game mechanics - actions and activities you can do, the amount of time needed to do different things and how to do them. Basically it's a good test drive of AI as long as you remember the tactics and strategy you employ playing the AI will at best be less effective against a human Jap opponent, at worst suicidal.
Sounds like pillager is getting serious (just as you predicted).

The only reason Pillager "wasn't serious" is that he diverted most of the IJ Army outside of China into Malaya to get Singapore. 60+ Jap LCU's in the final assault there pretty much describes Singapore in Pillager's list of Japanese priorities. Now with Singapore in Japanese hands, Pillager will be making up for lost time. Only a matter of where he's planning to go next and how long it takes to move Jap LCU's out of Singapore to where he's going. No question his pace of attack is definately going to step up.

You don't have to actually reach Buna in order to air evacuate those two units. You can use PA to pick up infantry (and devices <7 load weight) from any coastal hex.

If you know for certain there is a race to get to Buna first, it may well be worthwhile to set the destination hex to be one of the coastal hexes surrounding Port Moresby. That way you will have more time to get the men out rather than reaching Buna second and being immediately thrown out of time into a non coastal hex.

Alfred,

My choice of Buna was dictated largely by the fact the two Australian LCU's were retreated directly towards Buna as an end result of Pillager's attack on Port Moresby. I fully concur with your statement about coastal hexes as my plans are to evacuate elements of the LCU's by air (troop pick-up) using Catalinas and PBY's operating from Cooktown. Actually, I have no information one way or the other on any movement by Pillager to take Buna. Given that he (Pillager) is busy clearing the logjam of Japanese LCU's from Singapore, it'd be reasonably safe to say they could have some time to get to Buna ahead of a Japanese move to capture it.

I've actually been using patrol seaplanes extensively around Port Moresby and in the DEI for transport of LCU elements by air. Successful actions so far include extraction of Australian 27 Brigade elements from Singapore via Palembang to Batavia (using a relay system involving two separate groups of patrol seaplanes), concentration of Dutch LCU's from outlying locations into garrisons at Soerabaja and Palembang, picking up remnants of Australian LCU's from Rabaul and Kavieng and bringing them to mainland Australia after these bases were captured by the Japanese (this also done using a relay system).

Granted... patrol seaplanes are designed for use in naval search and is their most effective use. Transport (especially troops) is turning out to be a very effective secondary role for these planes when they're not actually needed or useful on naval search.

Summary of Operations 2/18/42

In general, a mostly very quiet game turn outside of China. Not that there isn’t anything happening…

South Pacific: Over the last several game turns, I’ve done a survey of bases in the far southern areas of the South Pacific theatre (Society and Cook island groups) to identify suitable base locations for possible use as forward staging areas for US forces in the event Pillager succeeds in creating the same Japanese forward perimeter along the line Canton-Samoa-Suva-Noumea that he did in our previous CHS match.

At this point, I’m considering this study a (worst-case) contingency plan. My overall defensive plan in the South Pacific is to establish and hold a bridgehead to prevent Pillager from completely accomplishing the same Japanese outer perimeter line that he did in our previous match. Even with the successful defense of a bridgehead position, a buildup of suitable bases in the Society and/or Cook Islands may still be desirable even if it does not prove to be a necessity.

My criteria for suitable bases in this area of the South Pacific is that they have a large (preferably unlimited) troop stacking capacity, plus the largest available expandable port and airfield capacity within the region. Only two bases in the far southern area (Tahiti & Rarotonga) completely fill this requirement. Possible future utilization of these bases at their fully-built capacity would be comparable to my use of Penhryn Is in our last CHS match as a jumping off point against Pago Pago.

Early preparations are underway for occupation of Tahiti and Rarotonga mainly by engineer and base force units together with sufficient supply point stocks to begin expansion of port and airfield facilities. Even if these bases are not needed in the final analysis, it’s not too early to start.

As for holding a bridgehead in Pillager’s possible Japanese outer perimeter line, preparations for this have been quietly underway since the start of the game. My planned Allied bridgehead is centered around Suva, together with several bases (Tonga and Niue) to cover its southern approaches. Fiji itself is already garrisoned with three NZ brigades, plus US and Australian units. Other Allied units have already occupied Tongatapu and Niue. Supply and fuel stocks in the bridgehead area are also being built up. One major advantage I saw with Suva for this was its proximity to Auckland as a supporting base immediately to its rear. Tonga and Niue would also need to be be occupied in order to cover the southern sea approaches to Suva from Auckland.

Initially I had looked at including Pago Pago and Noumea in this bridgehead, but with the Allied forces immediately available, my conclusion was that maximizing the (hopefully successful) defense of one major base and its immediate approaches was preferable to an inadequate (and probably unsuccessful) defense of three locations at once. Try to defend everything at once and in the end you will likely defend nothing. However, I have not excluded the possibility of expanding the bridgehead area to include Pago Pago and/or Noumea if sufficient Allied forces to successfully defend them can be brought to bear.

I don’t know if this plan will work, but it’s at least more than I had done last time.

DEI: Allied subs are now refueling at several locations in the DEI before departing for either India or Australia.
