Port Moresby

Post by WussGawd »

Hey folks. Still enjoying what is rapidly becoming my favorite game.

I was hoping for some input into what you all do to curtail raids by the Japanese AI with surface task forces on Port Moresby. Against the AI, I invariably take Gili Gili, but Even still, I find the Japanese launch night raids on Port Moresby.

Land based naval air is useless as the *&^%ing things dart in and out before daylight, and they usually don't spot the Japanese TFs until its too late.

I tried carrier air...but until you get enough US carriers, that is a tactic that usually ends up in the loss of flat tops.

Suggestions?

Two effective tactics against the predictable AI.

1. S-boats are brilliant submarines, but short ranged compared to their japanese counterparts (and far more effective than the next to useless gatos). A wolfpack sitting at PM or off the GG point often yields quick results.

2. Build your own cruiser/destroyer group and sit them in PM to go head to head. You'll loose a few destroyers, and most of your cas will limp back to australia to begin the long trip back to noumea and pearl, but any damaged jap ships end up well within lba range etc.

LBA at Gili Gili works good against AI and PBEM opponents who try that tactic.

Of course, they just start hammering GG instead of PM.

The other ideas plus:

1- Place mines (via submarine i.e. USS Argonaut) at their staging bases of the raiding force.

2- Place Expendable PT boats at Port Morseby to expend the bombardment forces ammuntion (Maybe they might get a torp hit on a BB)

Oh, you mean night Air Raids?

1- Switch a couple of fighter squadrons at PM to Night time Cap

2- Bomb Rabual during the day with B-17.

3- Capture Lae and then bomb Rabual with B-25's (You will eventually have enough B-25's to concentare and basically wipeout Rabual, get some P-38's there as escorts).

If in doubt ATTACK!

Nope, I find the night air raids pretty ineffectual, and learned early on to switch a squadron to night time CAP duty. It was definitely surface raids.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I was mainly looking for a few ideas I might not have tried...I definitely got some. :D
