mechanics of gen. reserve

Post by bush »

This is not a question about the actual training of pilots, but instead how to actually move them from a training unit to the General Reserve or TRACOM, how to move fresh meat into the training units, and how to extract trained gen. res. pilots to frontline squadrons. I need the idiot-proof version, please!

Thanks in advance.

To move pilot to TRACOM as instructor, he needs to ne 81+exp, name is yellow..it happens by clicking pilot name.

To move to General reserve, click pilot name, select YES, it sends pilot now into unit reserve, click name again and select YES and he is sent to General Reserve. Note you can send pilot to GenRes only if you have more pilots than planes in unit. Draw some excess rookies in first (via way explained below), if wanting to send more of experienced ones to GenRes.

When you have unit you use as training unit, select pilot source as Replacement (xx) by clicking selection From: Any in squadron view. You can then cycle between different pilot surces for unit. By selecting Replacement you are drawing in rookies (usually 20-30 exp). Number (xx) behind the name is number of pilots immediately available, but don't worry, you can draw more, they just come even less experienced then (since if drawing more than available, you start to draw pilots from flying school).

Open up the unit screen. Click on "Pilots." Click on the man's name. Hit "Y" to send him to Group Reserve. Click name again, hit "Y" again to send him to General Reserve. You can click the "Y" with the mouse, but using both hands and the actual "Y" key is much faster. At some point in moving pilots where the number of pilots drops below that required to be maintained in the unit, instead of General Reserve you'll get offered Active Service. At that point, if you still want to move more guys, you have to go back to the unit main screen, and pull in more nugget pilots from Replacement Pool. Then go back and repeat the proess to pull more to General Reserve.

If the guy is eligible for TRACOM his name will be in yellow. Just click on it and follow the prompts. Be careful which mouse button you choose, although there will be a confirmation step if you're ordering a 180-day vacation. Once he's in TRACOM, you can move him in and out as you like from the (task bar) Intelligence Reports/Pilot Replacements/Reserve Pool sub-menu.

Sardaukar and Bullwinkle,

Okay, I believe I understand what you have explained. Will try it out when I get home from work.

Now, what about selecting trained pilots to place in my frontline units?

You can set required pilot experience for example to "Trained 50+" from selection next to your unit name, or change From: any to From: Reserve (IIRC) or both. And you can always use "Request Veteran" to get list of experienced pilots available.

Hopefully Helpful Hints - Pilot Transfers

I-Moving new pilots into training units
1) From the desired unit, set "From ..." to Any.
2) Click "Get New Pilot".
    a) This will pull a low (20-30) EXP pilot from the Replacement Pool into the unit.
3) Repeat as needed to fill up the unit.
    a) If available, click "Get x Pilots" to fill unit faster.
    b) A squadron may have up to 33% more pilots than the max # of planes. (i.e.- if squadron has 13 planes max, it can have 17 pilots)

II-Moving pilots into TRACOM
  1) Pilots eligible for TRACOM will have their names in yellow type.
  2) From the unit's Pilot screen, left-click the pilot's name.
  3) Click "Yes" to transfer to TRACOM.

III-Moving pilots into General Reserve
  1) From the unit's Pilot screen, left-click the desired pilot's name.
  2) Click "Yes" to transfer to Group Reserve.
    a) The pilot is now inactive, with a delay of 1; he is also now in Group Reserve, and his name will be in grey type.
  3) Left-click the same pilot's name again.
  4) Click "Yes" to transfer to General Reserve.

IV-Moving pilots from General Reserve to front-line unit
  1) From the desired unit, set "From ..." to "Reserve".
  2) Click "Request Veteran".
  3) From the available list, click the desired pilot's name.
    a) Either left-click or right-click, both will work.

V-Moving pilots from TRACOM to front-line unit
  1) From the desired unit, set "From ..." to "TRACOM".
  2) Click "Request Veteran".
  3) From the available list, click the desired pilot's name.
    a) Either left-click or right-click, both will work.

VI-Moving pilots from unit to unit
  1) From the original unit's Pilot screen, left-click the desired pilot's name.
  2) Click "Yes" to transfer to Group Reserve.
    a) The pilot is now inactive, with a delay of 1; he is also now in Group Reserve, and his name will be in grey type.
  3) From the target unit, set "From ..." to "Reserve".
  4) Click "Request Veteran".
  5) From the available list, click the desired pilot's name.
     a) Either left-click or right-click, both will work.
     b) The available list may be filtered to "Group Reserve" to more easily find the desired pilot.
6) Click "Yes" to transfer to new unit.

Please note, there is a random, up-to-15-day delay when transferring pilots to/from TRACOM, General Reserve, and between units. Those pilots with a delay of 8 or more will be listed in the Group Reserve pool.

Hope this helps.
