The Thundering Herd!--Day Two

Post by John 3rd »

I agree Q-Ball. It has been frustrating to watch. Just miss Yorktown by a couple of days and if my I-Boat had managed to simply slow down Indomitable, I would have sunk her! Lucky breaks for some somewhat reckless playing.

Back to the Game!

I decide to move my CVs south of Ceylon and continue to hit shipping in range as well as Columbo. Knowing that the mass of shipping moving along the West Coast of India is TOOOOOOOO tempting a target to let pass, I order 3 CA (Myoko, Nachi, and Haguro) to attack shipping. Splitting the TF is risky but it pays off quite well for the day:

STF
My 3 CA have a field day sinking ships left-and-right! The cruisers sink 5 AK and 4 AKL as they try to get to the West Coast of India. The AK were all big, fat targets that ate up Long Lances and 8" Shells with no issue.

CarDiv2
The three CVs launch strong strike of 18 Zero, 32 Val, and 37 Kate during the morning. They hit a group of large, modern AK/AP. Two AK and an AP is sunk while another pair of AK as well as AP get hit severely. Weather closes in but a decent strike of 10 Zero, 11 Val, and 20 Kate manage to hit 3 large AP and 2 AK leaving them all in sinking condition.

SS
I-18 unloads 3 of 4 Torps into the large AK Bellerophon sinking her.

Confirmed Sinkings for the Day: 8 AK, 4 AKL, and 1 AP with another near dozen hit and in sinking condition. NOT BAD!

Orders for February 2nd:
CarDiv2
The carriers shall begin to move away towards Port Blair. I order them out to a range of 7 hexes for a final Port Strike. I order all Kates over to exclusively Port Attack and leave the Vals to hit targets of opportunity. This will be their last day of operation. Time to come home so we can cover the Left Hook landings.

STF
The 3 CA are ordered up the coast for about 7 hexes before reversing and moving away from the coast. Don't want to run too many risks here. I fear Lew turning Indomitable around and seeing those damned Stringbags attacking my fine cruisers. Use the way points feature to move them where I want and then pull away from the action.

There is no doubt that I have now cleared the Left Flank for the upcoming invasion. This was the true point of the Operation. I wanted, with limited CV Support, to try and drive the Royal Navy out of the area so it wouldn't be such a concern in about 10 days time. Look like the goal has been achieved. We'll wait for tomorrow before adding up all the sinkings from this raid.

US CVs ENTER the Fray!

Post by John 3rd »

Combat Report
February 1-5, 1942

As predicted the American Carriers (Enterprise, Lexington, and Saratoga) enter the fray flying planes from south of Java to attack the Merak Invasion Force on February 4,1942. Though terrible to watch it is good to KNOW where the carriers are and where they are NOT.

Port Moresby Invasion Force is the immediate beneficiary of this development as I order the loading to commence and the final isolation of the base to occur.

Lew returns to his 'old' ways of launching attacking trying to wrest the tactical initiative away from the Japanese. I truly like this style because the Allied Fleets are here to FIGHT for their territory. I take a couple of solid punches and my merchant fleet pays for it.

Let us make the rounds:

North Pacific
Cold Bay--As stated earlier I want this base to get the Allies away from Dutch Harbor and for recon/air search purposes. Little do I know what I get into. The Japanese load 50% of an SNLF onto 8 DD and send them to Cold Bay on January 31st.

My DDs are heavily fired upon by CD as they unload. The end of the turn reveals the following units present: 56th Coastal Artillery, 2/151st Combat Engineers, and 111th Base Force. Damn! OK. Here is a chance to grab some American surrenders so I order the loading of several AKL with the remains of the 1st SNLF and add another just for good measure.

These ships, under heavy CD, unload on the 2nd-3rd. Several AK are sunk and I have 3 DD moderately hit. I attack on the 3rd and get a 1-2 result due to him Fast TF in some Infantry from Kodiak.

Dutch Harbor
On the 4th my TF returns to DH just in time to be CRUSHED by CA Salt Lake City and 2 DD. I lose 1 DD and 7 AK/AKL in the massacre. CRAP.

Aleutians--I have my dander up but do want to be a Robert E. Lee. Instead of immediately doing stupid things I am gathering myself up north. As mentioned before I had decided to reinforce the Imperial Fleet up here with 2 CA, 1 CL, and 4 DD. These ships will arrive at Adak on the 6th. They will join my 4 operational DD and put a stop to the Fast TF runs into Cold Bay.

Reinforcements: I get a host of reinforcements in China on the 3rd. Two of these Brigades are earmarked for the Aleutians. The 52nd and 53rd are real CHEAP in terms of Political Points. I can buy them for only about 250 each. They will fill out to peak strength of about 175 AS. The 52nd is bought at Shanghai and is already heading for the area of operations.

Planning: I wanted to make this Theatre of area of action and so it is. The new warships about to be brought into the Fleet will get their shakedown up here. Junyo, Nisshin, and Yamato will make their presence felt in about a month when I work to capture Cold Bay. All American CVs are now accounted for with the 3 in the DEI and Yorktown on the West Coast. SHOULD be reasonably safe...

Central Pacific
Midway--Goes to Port Two so I move an AS there and will use it as a way point for SS Operations around Hawaii and the West Coast.

KB is almost to Rabaul and should disband there on the 7th. They will get R&R as well as pick-up new planes and part with pilots for the Reserve and TRACOM. I've got a number of ships with somewhat high System Damage (9-12) and they can repair from the ARD, 2 AR, and other support ships present at Simpson Harbor.

South Pacific
With American CVs spotted, the loading of 19th ID A and B begins as well as South Seas Force, 3 Artillery units, and an Engineering Regiment. Port Moresby is their target. They should depart for their objective on the 7th. Figure Landing about the 15th.

Port Moresby--A solitary AK is spotted on the 31st of January and it is sunk by 1 CL and 3 DD on February 1st.

Terapo--This is the only base the Aussies could retreat to when I gain Moresby so I send a Fast TF of 1 CL and 8 DD to drop off a Naval Guard unit. The base will fall on the 6th.

Reinforcements: The 59th Inf Brig as well as the 60th (part of the big reinforcement I got in China and Manchuria spoken about earlier) are detailed to become the major garrisons for Lunga and Milne Bay. They will be bought out over the two weeks and shipped to those destinations.

Philippines
Stalemate describes Luzon. Though I got those surrenders in several locations, I simply don't have enough strength to drive the Allies out of Clark and get to Bataan. No big deal but it is frustrating.

In Mindanao my three large Brigades are about back to Cagayan where they will be loaded and send to Ambon and then onto Darwin.

Eastern/Central DEI
Continue mopping up Sulawasi taking those small bases around Makassar.

Kendari--Land here on the 1st and take the base on the 2nd.

Dili, Timor--I will land here tomorrow on the 6th.

Dutch and American SS are being a real PAIN in the Denpasar--Makassar--Kendari triangle. Have lost 3-4 AK over the last several days. They were all sailing in escorted convoys but it makes little difference. Frustrating to watch...

Western DEI
Will come back to this area LAST.

Malaya
50,80--Resistance ends here on February 1st and the units present immediately go to march formation and head for Malacca for rail transport to Singapore.

Temoluh--The last Allied troops in Malaya surrender on the 3rd. All these troops shift to strategic movement and head for Singapore as well.

Singapore--My first 3 ID and 5 TK Reg depart this base on the 3rd. They will move up to one of those small bases (Phuket I think) and wait for CarDiv2 to meet them for protection.

Will soon have the 5th and 18th ID reformed in Singapore and they will form the follow-on wave about a 3-5 days after the initial landing.

Am having a devil of a time getting supply up over 20,000 here! I've done all the normal things: lots of ships in Port, HQ units present, and have raised the supply demand to the maximum. With all the surrenders I hope by bringing all those Japanese troops down this will draw enough to get over the mark. I need this so I can draw my planes for CarDiv2 to replace their losses as well as upgrade some Sentai of Army aircraft.

Burma
Moulmein--Don't remember if I mentioned it earlier but this base fell to an Infantry and TK Regiment a few days ago. An Army HQ, Engineering unit, and large Base Force just entered the base to get it up to speed. Hopefully, this keeps Lew's eyes looking south and NOT for the Left Hook.

Indian Ocean Raid
I had initially planned on a two day Raid by CarDiv2 and supporting units but the total lack of opposition allows me to extend it to four total. In separating out the 3 CA into a Raiding TF (Myoko, Nachi, and Haguro) I double my chances for sinkings. I will recap the whole raid with KNOWN sinking listed:

Jan 31st: 7 large AP, 4 AK, 1 CM, 1 AKL
Feb 1st: 8 AK, 1 AP, and 4 AKL
Feb 2nd: 1 large AP, 2 KV, 1 AM, 1 AS
Feb 3rd: 6 AK, 1 AP, 1 AKl, 1 AM, 1 PT

TOTALS: 10 AP, 18 AK, 6 AKL, 1 CM, 2 KV, 2 AM, 1 AS, 1 PT--41 Ships.

The appearance of American CVs helps me to rapidly move CarDiv2 back towards Singapore. Their aircraft losses had been pretty light until Feb 3rd. I decided to augment the last attack on Columbo with 1 Daitai of Val instead of just my Kates. BIG MISTAKE! I lost 11 of 20 Vals to AA over the harbor. Very bad. I wrote down their starting air strength and closing numbers just to see what my losses were (the paranthetical is ending strength):

Hiryu--24 Zero (24), 21 Val (20), 21 Kate (20)
Soryu--21 Zero (20), 18 Val (8), 21 Kate (19)
Taiyo--12 Zero (11), 9 Val (4)

Total Losses: 2 Zero, 15 Val, and 3 Kate. Not good but then not terrible. Pilot scores jumped up with all the attacks and sinkings. Should easily replace my losses when the Cvs get back to Singapore.

Western DEI
Merak--I begin landing at Merak on the 3rd with 38th ID A and B as well as a large Base Force. CD is heavy but not terrible (lose 3 AK and an AKL) as I have 3 CL embedded within the Invasion Force.

All HELL breaks loose on the 4th! The combined strength of 3 US CV descends upon the Invasion Force which--thankfully--had already gotten all of the troops ashore. Flying a maximum range launch from the SW, they deliver a massive three wave punch of: 14 TBD, then 11 F4F, 50 SBD, and 16 SB2U, and--finally--17 SBD. I have 16 Zero flying LR CAP and they some damage (crushing the TBDs) but cannot stop things. It is painful to watch as the bombs fall. By the end of the day I lose: CL Kinu, 8 AK, 1 APD, and a TB. CL Jintsu and 5 more AK are hit. Order all TF to RUN for Palembang! The Americans lose 12 TBD and 4 SBD. It is not much but it is something.

FINE. Re-Organize Palembang with more Zeros and another Daitai of Betty.

The 5th starts with one of those Japanese TF deciding--apparently--to commit suicide as Lew throws in two STF to attack anything present in the hex. The STF (2 US CA and 4 DD then BC Repulse, CA Exeter, and 3 British CL) maul the TF. I lose CL Jintsu, 1 E, 1 TB, 1 SC, and 7 AK. These losses didn't have to happen but they did. Grrrr....

After this work the STF seemingly vanish. My Searches find nothing and they get away scott free. I don't know.

Merak--There is some GOOD news as Merak falls to a Shock Attack (6-1) and I am able to move Fighters there. There is about 15,000 supply present so that is good. It is, however, a very costly two day period for the Japanese Navy and Merchant Marine.

REACTIONS: I move more Fighters and Air Search to Denpasar, Palembang, Sabang, and Port Blair. The Fighters will deal with any attacks from the US CVs while the Air Search will--hopefully--warn me of their approach.

Where are they operating from? Has got to be Perth or something in that vacinity. Where will they go now that I know where they are? Don't know but can guarantee now they are known Lew will USE them! Have decided once I take Dili, Timor I will halt further operations in the Eastern DEI and Australia until I get some more help...

I forgot to mention China has little happening in it during these days. The forces at Loyang and moving towards Sian and going after the units driven across the river from Loyang.

Maybe is still the lesson from our brief Solomons/G'canal PBEM when you got into my CVs with your small SC TF, but I like to have a SC TF lead the transports in a potentially dangerous landing.

I have landed in Java at Merak, Kalidjati (AF 4), and Semarang (Port 5). I think Kalidjati is the best options with a smaller follow up at Merak. The only thing on this option is to have a few BFs at Oosthaven to provide LRCAP (which you didn't have [:-]). Just remember to have all the hexsides in Japanese hands before Batavia falls. IMO, its easier to kill those troops in the northern part of the island first rather than just try to push them all down to Soerabaja.

Move in subs to cover him sending all these ships into Soerabaja for a quick refueling from around the southern tip. He may feel he could do this and stay close to Java for some time.

Michael--Good Notes--I've got about half-a-dozen SS working the eastern/southern side of Java just in case he does try things.

Jabs-and-Counter Punches

Post by John 3rd »

Combat Report
February 6-11, 1942

As normal I lived at the Hotel over the weekend and couldn't do an update. Lew and I have really been hitting our stride in getting 2-3 turns day in and that really helps for continuity.

The action continues but the emphasis returned to the Aleutians.

Regional Report and Planning Thoughts:

North Pacific
It is now readily apparent that the commitment of Yorktown and Warspite to the North is not an isolated incident. He intends to put up a fight here and I shall welcome the opportunity.

As described earlier, the Japanese landed at Cold Bay expecting a simple capture but found 3 American units (including a CD) present. One SNLF was not going to be enough so I Fast TF in another but was unable to win a 1-1 quickly. He started Fast TF bringing more Infantry. It has now become a fracas!

Waiting several days I form-up CAs (Aoba and Furutaka), CL Naka, and 8 DD at Adak. On the 7th they sail for Cold Bay. An American STF hits Dutch Harbor on the 7th. Thinking he may leave whatever is present in Cold Bay unescorted I set a trap by placing CA Furutake, Naka and 3 DD at DH while sending the balance of the force on to Cold Bay.

I've got a 6 plane Chutai of Jakes operating out of Dutch Harbor so they are my recon/air search for the moment.

On the 9th battle occurs.

Dutch Harbor--My 5 ships find CA Salt Lake City and 2 DD. The American cruiser takes a Long Lance and 3 8" hits (both DDs hit by my escorts) but she dishes out 2 8" hits on Furutaka and 3 8" hits on Naka. Grrr...

Cold Bay--The plan works as I find the large AP Zeilin unloading with 2 AVD. All three ships are sunk and--most importantly--Zeilin takes 1859 Troops, 66 Guns, and 20 Vehicles with her! NICE WORK! Think this was a large chunk of an American RCT.

At Sea--As Aoba and her DDs return to Dutch Harbor they manage to sink the Salt Lake City and DD Gridley!

TOTAL: Salt Lake City, DD Gridley, AP Zeilin, and 2 AVD for no loss.

I have sunk a bunch of these large AP over the last month. How much of a dent in his fast sealift capacity am I hurting?

This is a good result but all three of my fresh cruisers are damaged enough to warrant going home. CRAP. This leaves me with about 7 DD to operate in this region for the foreseeable future.

Dutch Harbor--To prove the point, Lew hits it with CA Northhampton and 3 DD on the 11th. No damage but it proves he is still feeding more ships up here.

For the next two+ weeks:
NAVAL PLANS: I want to shift this from Meeting Engagement to a decisive encounter. Orders go out across the Pacific to gather warships for the North. 3 CA are pulled from Singapore, a CL and 5 DD are grabbed from the Eastern DEI. CV Akagi and CVL Zuiho depart Rabaul with escorts. Within the next two weeks I shall be getting BB Yamato, CV Junyo, CVL Nisshin, CL Yahagi, and 4 DD. They will be hooker up with these reinforcements for a massed, powerful push against the American Forces.

AOs, 2 more AKE, and an AR are on the way to Adak to support operations.

I must figure on the possibility of 2 US CV appearing so 2 CV and 2 CVL should be enough to 'deal' with that...

AIR PLANS: There are Base Forces present at Attu (1), Adak (2), and Dutch Harbor (1). Orders are cut for a 3rd BF to go to Adak, another to Dutch Harbor, and a 3rd to Umnak. AF construction currently has Attu at 1-52%, Adak 1-77%, and DH 0-27%. A Chutai of Vals, Daitai of Zeros, and Chutai of Kates will begin loading and move to Adak to operate from that small AF. A Chutai of Emily will go to Dutch Harbor.

GROUND PLANS: Two Infantry Brigades are bought for the 5th Fleet. The 52nd and 60th Inf Brigade (from China) are purchased and are being loaded and sent to Dutch Harbor. Each carriers about 150-175 AS and SHOULD be enough to kick some American BUTT at Cold Bay!

Meanwhile I need to pull those two SNLF off of Cold Bay before they are wiped out. Will try that with my DDs working by Fast TF.

Figure the action to renew in Grand Style around March 1st...

Central Pacific
Nothing to really report in the Marshalls or any of the newly gained territories. Guess I could mention that Midway's Port is now 2 and I have an AS operating there now.

South Pacific
The Port Moresby Invasion Force sets sail from its gathering place at Gasmata. Over 20,000 troops will hit the Allied Base on about the 14th. The Invasion Force has LR CAP and is escorted by two BBs.

My Betty fly from Lae and sink an AKL at PM on the 7th.

Lunga continues to develop with AF-4 and Port nearly 3.

KB--After a LONG journey the KB arrives at Rabaul for R&R as well as Repair. The 4 CV, 2 CVL, 4 BC, 4 CA, 2 CL, and 18 DD disband after refueling, getting new aircraft, and transferring pilot personelle. I send about a dozen pilots to Training Command and pick-up about 18 planes to replaces losses from operations. Was surprised after nearly 6 weeks of solid action that I only needed that many planes. Casualties have been--thankfully--light.

Kaga and Zuikaku need some real repair time. I have an AG, AD, ARD, and AR present in the Port and I put every ship into repair mode with Sys-7 or higher. Daitai are set to train with Zeros flying 20% CAP and 50% training. Gonna need at least 2+ weeks for things to get better. As noted, I pull the two least damaged carriers and send them to Kobe to rendezvous with other warships going north.

Eastern DEI
Dili--When the American CVs appeared I had great concerns that they might smack this Invasion Force but nothing happens and so the base falls. The two Naval Guard move east to take the base there and I begin recon of Darwin and Koepang.

Mop-Up work occurring in the Celebes

Denpasar--As might be recalled CA Kumano took at Torp from an Albacore at the start of the month. Lew evidently REALLY wants that ships. He has Dutch air attacking the base and then CV Lexington's Air Group strikes. Foreseeing the danger I move the ship to Makassar and onto Balikpapan.

While I more the ship, I also add fighters to the base and they do quite well. There are 12 Oscar 1-C and 21 Zero working there and they exact a serious toll on the attacking aircraft. Over the six days of fighting at least 50 aircraft fall here in exchange for 3-4 planes and only 2 pilots.

Most importantly the CV Strike costs Lexington 6 Buffalos and 8 SBD. Adding that to the 12 TBD I shot down early, her has lost about 50% of one CV Air Group. Good attrition for little gain.

Western DEI
Merak--With the base firmly in the Japanese grip I move about 30 Fighters there and shuttle in the remaining 1/3 of the 38th ID as well as an Engineering unit.

If there is no interference I will move troops from Palembang to Merak and ratchet up the pressure. The original two Inf Brigades at Merak move out to encircle Batavia.

Burma
After taking Moulmein I order the Inf Reg and TK Reg to move north and cross the river. Three small TF also load and move out from Singapore to bring four-five small units up to Moulmein. Want these TF to be seen as well as the units. Hopefully, this will fix Lew's attention THERE as the Left Hook begins.

The Left Hook
Plans are now well past set for the Operation that was planned from the beginning of the war. With the delay imposed by having to wait for CarDiv2 to return, I have been able to rebuild 2 more Inf Div at Singapore.

Current Dispositions:
CarDiv2 (Hiryu/Soryu/Taiyo) arrives at Singapore on the 7th where it refuelled but COULD NOT pick-up replacement aircraft due to the supply shortage. I have three TF arriving tomorrow and the 13th carrying over 40,000 supply. This should enable me to replace planes.

I have to disband the Kawai Detachment that flew so well from Taiyo. All of her best pilots are put back into the Pool, I unload the Val Chutai she was carrying, and replace the planes with Ryujo's wayward Zero Daitai. This addition will provide me with nearly 70 Zero to cover the Landings.

Puhket--The powerful Escort Force of 4 BB, 3 loaded Inf Div, 5 TK Reg, and 4-6 other units wait the final convoys to come up from Singapore. In 3-4 days the massed force will sail carrying FIVE Inf Div, 7 TK Reg, support units and 25th Army HQ.

No one is planning ANYTHING in India. This should be a bolt from the blue. I will have 50 Zero and 60 Oscar waiting to fly over to provide CAP once the base is grabbed.

China
Troops moving about. After two weeks of R&R I have troops moving out from Loyang to drive the Chinese back towards Sian. Sian is the final goal here. WHEN it falls I should be able to grab the rest of the north and will then sit for a while to see if there is any reaction...

Engineering:
Palembang AF-5
Sendai AF-4
Sinyang AF-3
Sinagora AF-4
Shikuka AF-2
Lunga AF-4
Manila AF-5
Miri AF-3

Those are the develops across the Pacific. Here is a screenshot of Cold Bay:

Since your game has hit 2/42, what about converting some of your Minekaze and Kamikaze Class DDs to APDs?? These are good for you to use as Fast Transport TFs, but will take some time to convert.

North Pacific - Why build an AF at Dutch Harbor?? Go with Umnak or try for a close dot base nearer Cold Bay (Dora Harbor - 1 hex due west of Cold Bay) and/or Port Heiden (between Cold Bay and Kodiak which may be a future base to operate from as it is protected from ships coming at it from the south.

I posted my thoughts on DD/APD conversions in my AAR not so long ago. In short: postpone them until supplying forward bases under the threat Allied aviation actually becomes important, or until APDs get upgrades that make them good ASW escorts. Even old Japanese DDs can tangle with most of the Allied ones in the first half of 1942, so they are valuable in this role during the expansion phase.

Large APs and AKs are valuable to Allies. They cannot haul troops on common xAKs, therefore losing dedicated transports hurts them. I know I never had enough sealift until maybe autumn of 1942 in my BB Enhanced game against Michael.

Sending pilots to the Training Command is useless. Except maybe to keep them as elite reserve. You'll have more than enough green pilots anyway.

Good ideas.

1. I will hold off on the APD conversions for a bit. Concur with Stanislav there for the moment.

2. The base building is an excellent thought. Attu just went AF-1 on Feb 12th so I have an air bridge now that stretches from Northern Japan all the way to Attu. Will recon Dora Harbor and see if anything is present.

Got my 7 remaining DDs making a Fast TF run into Cold Bay to grab about 80% of those two SNLF before they are destroyed. Once they have pulled those poor boys I will shift my Jakes over to doing some serious recon of the islands and dots nearby.

Just designated an Air Flotilla that is doing nothing in the Philippines to move to Attu. Switched it to 5th Fleet and started the loading onto a pair of 18 Knot AMC.

3. Glad to know that those sinking will have some serious impact on his movement of troops. Will try to do a screenshot off the sunk APs tomorrow.

Just thought about sending some CM (minelayers) up there and run them into Cold Bay. That will slow him down and the sound you hear will be transports running into them. [:D]
Maybe 2 of your 4 minelaying subs need to move over here.

I've got my ML SS in Singapore. Would have to use them because the CMs would be shredded by CD fire. Like the idea a lot though.

Mine the coastal hex due east of Cold Bay. If he is using direct routing to get from Kodiak to CB, he will run right into them. [;)]

Instead of converting a whole class of DDs, how about 6 of them?? That would give you about 1500 in troop capacity which is slightly above the number of troops for a Naval Guard unit.

Like the mining idea. I'll bet he is using the direct route.

Doing a smaller number of conversions might hold some serious merit.

Haven't got a turn yet this morning so I am not sure about a few things. Am rather dreading watching my DDs picking up those SNLF under the literal gun of that CD unit. We'll have to hope that they dodge well.

It is now time to get to brass tacks as we are now ready to launch the Left Hook into India. This move has been planned from the start of the war and now we move into specifics. This Posting is considered to be a request for input and ideas for the Landing and initial movements. Let me explain the 'vision' and then my ideas:

VISION
The Left Hook into India is hoped to accomplish the following:
1. Gain valuable HI, LI, Resources, and Oil.
2. Destroy as many units as possible to forestall a counterattack from the India area for as long as possible.
3. Capture of NE India and Burma with then a defense line being established West of Calcutta.
4. Force the Allied Player into an attritional situation where the Japanese can benefit.

FORCES
As already mentioned the initial assault has 5 Inf Div, 8 TK Reg, and about a dozen support units.

OPTIONS
A. Do I make a single, massed landing?

or

B. Make a two-pronged landing with the Inf Div landing in one location and the Armor in another?

POSSIBLE TARGETS
1. Viza
2. Diamond Harbor
3. Chittagong

I am strongly thinking about landing my Infantry at Diamond Harbor and my Armor at Chittagong. Could quickly capture Calcutta and then breakout from there while the tanks blaze north from the eastern landing.

OR

Land it all at Diamond Harbor but be slowed by Calcutta.

Open to suggestions...

Calcutta is a tough nut to crack. If you land all your infantry at Diamond Harbor, your opponent can simply put 2,000 AV in Calcutta and you'll never take it.

I think I'd land some infantry and armor at Chittagong and some at Viz or Cuttack and then deploy in a pincer movement to isolate Calcutta, Diamond Harbor, and Burma from the rest of India.

Good idea. What about placing 1 Inf Div at Chittagong?

Am talking to Michael on the phone as I write. More thoughts?

You could take Diamond Harbour and then break out to the East, no need to go trough Calcutta. Of course, you're leaving yourself open to a counterattack from Calcutta to DH in that case. Hedging your bets by doing 2 assaults does seem preferable though.

I think the double landing is a better move, however, you are correct in noting the possibility of moving east out of Diamond Harbor. Chittagong's Lvl-4 Port would be mighty helpful as well.

Course a much more risky move would be to land at Viza and Chittagong leaving the Center open. Don't but think this is probably a BAD idea...

Yes, you'll probably want to get your forces to to join up sooner rather than later.
