60mm Mortar Navel Weapon

Post by Buck Beach »

I have researched that some PTs and PGM class PCs had a 60mm Mortar weapon. Can anybody show an example of this and/or any suggetions as to how to set it up as a device.

A 60mm mortar could never be fired from the navel. It would give you a massive tummy ache. [:D]

Nor can it save your from our skewed sense of humor. [:D]

I've set up a 15cm mortar as an ASW weapon before, are you wanting it as ASW or as a land attack weapon? It should also work as a surface attack weapon.

If you want the former:

Put it in as you normally would, set it to ASW weapon, and in the range box set the effective depth in feet instead of a range in yards. (just put the effective depth feet number in, the fact you have labeled it as an ASW weapon will tell the game engine that it is depth not range).

For the latter:

simply set it as a naval gun just like any other naval gun...it will then engage any naval target or bombardment target in range. Set the accuracy very low and and be sure that you use 'Naval Gun' (it will be treated as a WWI type low angle gun) not DP (which would make it a AAA weapon as well).

You'll have to make it a "Navel Gun" device.

I think reasonable parameters would look like this:
Type = 18
Range = 1
Acc = 8
Penetration = 5
Eff = 3
Anti - Arm = 1
Anti - Soft = 4
Load Cost = 9999

The Japanese had a "Knee Mortar" -- so what's so strange about a navel mortar?

I believe this device was only carried to support landings and withdrawals along the coast. It's not a "naval weapon" (though I'm sure some gung-ho sailor tried firing a few rounds at a barge somewhere).

"Naval" in the sense that it was on a vessel, and "Naval" in the same sense that the rockets on rocket-armed landing ships in the game are "Naval".

Incidentally, there's a mortar-armed landing craft in the game.

That being said, PT's can't bombard, so the mortar won't be much good.

I am thinking more for the PGM converted mainly from the PC-461 class.

The main point of the mortars on the light vessels was to fire illumination rounds to light up enemy vessels at night.

So basically for flare/starburst rounds then?

Correct. The boats carried both 60mm and 81mm mortars, issued with HE, WP and illumination rounds. They were primarily for illuminating ships at night, but also for harrassing fire against enemy positions on shore. Considering the scale of the game, such a small weapon would have little or no effect for shore bombardment.

Perhaps this is a 60mm mortar on PGM9?

Image

The standard ammunition allowance for a 60mm mortar on a PT boat was 10 high-explosive and 20 illuminating rounds. This reflects the mortar's original and primary purpose.
