damn, next mistake on my part... the front has moved slightly closer to Truk lately and I usually keep my heavy bombers on nav attack / rest when they are not supposed to fly an attack against an enemy base... as we´re closer to Truk now, this unfortunetely resulted in a nav strike against a convoy there and the bombers flew at their max range... and how did they attack? Of course, in bits and pieces, coming in as famous strike packs... and this time we suffer, we really suffer...

it sure is a good idea to have each squadron flying alone, as stupid as the sweeps we usually get... this is the first time our bombers really get shred by the enemy and this without working radar... guess all our attacks will come to a halt as soon as land based radar is going to work... then we´re back at beta stage testing how everything turns out, it will become worse I fear as the strike packs then meet full Cap all the time... oh my god...

I´ve not got any trained crews for nav attack within these heavy bomber squadrons so it´s no surprise they haven´t hit anything, only the USN heavies are tasked to fly nav attacks and these are expected to score the hits... all USAAF bomber squadrons to fly nav attack are medium bomber squadrons (B-25C) set to 1000ft and trained on lownav... as soon as the B-25C are used up, I´m screwed...

this has been the worst day for the USAAF bomber squadrons so far, it´s like the Schweinfurt raid in the Pacific... now what if most or all of the 300 fighters reported at Truk would have been in the air with a working radar?

adjusted the bombers´ ranges though...

Probably have to wait until the game is over to find out but . . . it will be interesting to see if his current/future tanker losses have any effect on his economy.

that´s one of the really interesting things if you start with a "new" game, you just don´t know if this or that is good or if this or that is really bad. Especially when you haven´t played or looked at the other side. Rainer says he doesn´t fell his tanker losses, "he´s got enough of them"... [:D] but this could be propaganda, especially when I think about the Allied side, would I have lost 50 tankers I would have to stop any offensive actions. The Japanese sure got more of them, but I doubt they can take these losses without feeling them.

I´m absolutely sure that it´s senseless to sink freighters though as he won´t run out of ressources, I expect him to feel his tanker losses soon though, hope to sink another couple of dozen until mid 44 and by then he won´t have many possibilities left where he can send his tankers so prohibiting him from building up huge fuel stockpiles is the goal at the moment.

SS Pompon sunk today... she was hit YESTERDAY by air ASW and had 56sys 30flt 6eng and having sys seems to be more dangerous than having 3/4 of a ship being flooded... had three or four messages of major flooding increase and the sub went down... have had more than a dozen subs return with flt damage between 80 and 90 (while having very low sys) and they made it easily...

torps missed, this is our ASW TF in the area... after having sunk two freighters recently I guess this will draw more subs into the area again and this would suit me well as there´s just nothing of importance going to Perth other than some convoys bringing in supplies...

the well working radar... have set three Corsair squadrons on LRCAP from Selaroe (they´re also covering that place together with Thunderbolts) as I´ve expected either some Zekes going after my LCT or sweeps... the enemy sends a sweep and luckily for us, the enemy´s dive was over after two passes, resulting in a very dynamic engagement then with nearly all Corsairs damaged (all made it home - 2 hexes) but 10 Zekes being claimed shot down (6 outright over the target)... the Corsair was shot down during the initial dive...

what the enemy does to us is what we do to him... the Lightnings do the usual single squadron sweeps with the squadrons losing a couple of their fighters on the way to target... who´s surprised? also the result isn´t really surprising here, the Lightnings dive on the Nicks, taking them down or sending them home damaged...

here comes the second squadron, the Zekes were dived on for 10 sec, the Tonies weren´t dived at all... the couple of Tonies then scored more hits on the P-38 than vice versa... as soon as you don´t have the dive with the Allied fighters you end up on the losing side if it´s a long range mission as many of the damaged aircraft tend to crash...

here are 3x3 of the stupidly fragmented sweeps that we are used to... amazingly enough, these 9 Lightnings had the never ending dive on both the Tonies and Nicks...

and the third squadron with the usual 22 out of 25 fighters... again the never ending dive, getting a clear result... in total the Lightnings achieve a victory in kills today, all but one sweep had the never ending dive, all these attacks but one had the P-38 coming out with no losses while the enemy was shred.. in the one we didn´t have the dive, the enemy lost two fighters (while being 4:1 outnumbered) to five Lightnings lost in the end... funny that there are people insisting on the dive being not the non plus ultra...

looks like I´ve got to fly more airfield attacks again to close them down and to make it more dangerous for the Japanese to fly these strikes while being in danger to be caught on the ground... with all our offensives here being stalled in the jungle and no chance to break through (we would need 35000 av more) we have a new plan for the Allied ground troops in this area... and that´s why the airforce is stood down too, no need to take losses for flying attacks on empty airfields if the enemy isn´t around... now that he is around, we´ve got to do something again...

and due to the fact that both sides suffer from funny design decisions, also the Japanese sweeps usually lose a couple of fighters each time that arrive late... and this time we had some more fighters leaking out, including Thunderbolts that dove on the Oscars and took two of them down... all kills went to diving fighters today...

the enemy created a Cap trap when moving some of his ships through the Malacca strait North and lots of bombers tried to attack the TF but all except these useless Brit Liberators failed to find the target... I really have enough of these Liberators, having no armor means they are as easily shot down as a Nate... all six attacking bombers were shot down by the 9 Tojos... have "upgraded" these Liberators to armored Wellingtons and won´t use any of these unarmored bombers anymore... no use for them, you get a handful each month at best and they are nothing but flying death traps...

still most of these attacks end up with "torpedoes fail to detonate" message... which is odd because with a presumed 10% (or 50% if it´s oct to see it reduced) you can´t end up with duds more or less all of the time when attacking DD and E...

I wonder how this Air results would been if the Ground to Air Radar was working !

more disastrous for the side that actually attacks bases with radar. Why? Because with radar you more or less get everything in the air, as can be seen when carriers are attacked. So far I´ve always had everything flying with ship based radar.

The biggest problem I see in "fixing" land based radar will be the issue that the game was tested and designed with non working radar it seems. Then they decided how great it would be to send in strikes in bits and pieces with the Cap being "dynamic" while the only thing seen was a no radar effect. Now you fix radar and see your sweeps go in one squadron after another (while losing a bunch of their fighters all the time) followed (if you´re lucky) by the bombers in bits and pieces. That´s called "strike pack feature". And then you end up with everything the enemy has in the air. That sure will be fun.

I have been bitching about non working radar for months and it sure has to be fixed. What they shouldn´t be forgotten is all the effect this is going to have so only fixing radar is a NOGO IMO. But hey, as the air model seems to be seen as near perfect anyway, I guess the huge impact of having 100% of the fighters in the air instead of 15-20% at best will only be seen as "minor". [:D] Don´t know what is going on behind the scene anyway. Bug fixing was the way to go we were told, the many tweaks that are needed to make it the really good game it could be (as much as WITP received on improvements to become "very good") is not really on the list, at least not according to official statements. But who knows, one can only hope.

sent the Lightnings to Babar today to have them sweep the base West of Kendari because Kendari is the main airbase in the area and I guess Rainer felt pretty much save there so far... we can reach the base with 4Es from Darwin at extended range but I´m not really keen on attacking as we´ve spotted some 150 fighters at the base... could result in only some two dozen in the air though with recon being wrong all the time and radar not working... guess there are some 80 fighters and 1/4 would be in the air... decided to attack sooner than later with Lightnings doing a sweep before the bombers show up (at least that´s the plan with the Lightnings being closer to the target)...

that´s what you get from such a nice "feature" of squadrons losing three of their aircraft all the time (I seriously don´t want to believe this is wad as I would lose all respect of people coming up with such a strange idea - this has nothing to do with realism)... two of the Lightnings were downed while being outnumbered 5:1... and now think about working land based radar if the strike routine as it is... shaking head...

and another one... yeah, this is how it was in WWII, every fighter squadron being sent out lost three fighters on the way to target ALL THE TIME... not 1, not 2, not 4, not 8... THREE all the time... so stupid... it would be stupid enough to seem them near always losing fighters on their way, but the stupidity tops itselve by having always THREE fighters being lost...

go through the 30 pages of the AAR and you can count up the number of times this studity came up already... it´s all there, noone can deny it...

and the last squadron, the three fighters of this squadron that were lost came in earlier already with 2x3 lost fighters of the other two squadrons... some things should only cause you headache while you insist on saying it would work well... every human being to a different ego of course...

the total result today of course wasn´t pleasant, the fragments were shot up badly (mostly damaged aircraft that crashed or were write offs) and the result of the fragmented strikes were no less than 9 Lightnings lost for reported 11 enemies downed...

our troops arrived at Hollandia and as expected, we don´t meet much resistance here anymore... the five fragments are so small one of them is even destroyed by our bombardment that didn´t show much effect other than the recon you get from the intelligence shells... also the division seems to be totally understrenght, Rainer has used air transport as usual to evacuate as much as possible... no problem at all to take the place...

we take Hollandia quite easily, all our units are in perfect shape and start planning for their next target... it will take 100 days to see them back in action again as I won´t be able to land them somewhere with less prep as I´m not keen to accept the insane losses during a non opposed landing with, let´s say, 70 prep...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Japanese Unit(s) Wiped Out at Hollandia by attrition!!!

only the fragments were whiped out, 12th Div (at least what was there of 12th div) was able to retreat West... [X(] Wth? Paras took the dot base (Sarmi) North West of Hollandia and the next dot base is something like 15 hexes away from Hollandia and that´s where the unit retreated towards... as a unit can only retreat towards a valid supply path, this shows how "well" the supply routines are working as having a VALID supply path to an empty dot base 15 hexes away through mountains and jungle terrain of New Guinea is just a joke... I sure laughed and shook my head about it because having the unit retreat is worse than having it destroyed while being able to rebuild it...

rather short turn, we are mostly preparing for some upcoming invasions and am quite happy that the airforce hasn´t got to do much else than bombing empty airfields around Timor and New Guinea... the next airfield with enemy aircraft next to the frontline (except Truk) is some 25 hexes away... Truk has reported 230 fighters, 30 bombers and 200 aux and could be reached from Rabaul or Kavieng but I don´t see a need to attack the place anyway...

Moulmein taks a hit too, isn´t in enemy use, no effect as the damage is going to be repaired within a week... bombing empty airfields hasn´t got any effect, damage is repaired in more or less no time and you can´t keep much more than two or three airfields constantly closed and this can only be done with round the clock bombing... so all you do is racking up op losses... Rainer is doing the perfectly right things IMO, there´s just no need to oppose my airforce and he just waits for us to come in striking range, planning to use both LBA en masse and his carriers... like the spider sitting motionless around until the fly gets into range... the only good thing about it is the fact that we´re going to be able to field more Corsairs, Thunderbolts and Lightnings by the time we are going to need them... it will be a short and bloody battle I guess with the enemy throwing in everything and us hopefully resisting...

I´ve been wrong, Kendari is also in range and we´ve spotted quite some enemy aircraft there... guess 50% of what recon reports actually is there... we sure are going to visit Kendari...

here we go... spotted the enemy at Kendari and had a good weather forecast (who really cares about the forecast, today it was even better than the forecast) and sent in all I´ve had... we start off with the usual silly sweeps that go in one by one with every squadron losing some of the fighters... silly...

here comes the second squadron (at least the main part)... while the first one didn´t enjoy having the never ending dive, the second one had... and if someone really still thinks the dive isn´t the one and only factor, here´s just yet another example (out of 963 in this AAR) that shows you what the dive is able to do... while the first squadron couldn´t even achieve a 1:1 in kills without the never ending dive (5 Lightnings crashed due to damage) the second one dispatched the remaining 10 fighters during the dive for not even a single shot being fired at them...

we are now waiting for the bombers to show up... with the radar bug, the enemy of course isn´t getting his fighters airborne... with the radar bug fixed, it will show how weak the strike routine really is, because then you will run into full Cap with your shitty strikes all the time and probably get the shit beaten out of you all the time... one can only hope this really gets looked at, while I still can´t belive it could be overlooked for so long...[:(] I estimate more than a hundred fighters being at Kendari, give them working radar and my silly sweeps with the main parts of two squadrons would suffer from a Japanese 5:1 numerical advantage both times... you don´t even want to imagine this...

and that´s the real interesting part today... as expected, the enemy is totally screwed without any radar warning (there sure is radar) and probably 80% of the enemy fighters stays on the ground... the two Lightning sweeps left nothing to be shot at in the air and the bombers really nuke the base due to high DL and perfect weather conditions... this can be seen as a full success... this can also be seen as another example of how weak the strike routine is... why? Because once again it is easier to COORDINATE all the bombers when they are coming from three separate bases (total distance between the bases something like a dozen hexes) and yet it works just perfectly... now try launching all these bombers from one super airfield, they would come in in bits and pieces... same goes for sweeps, the more squadrons you´ve got on the more different airfields, the better, you will get more fighters over the enemy base at the same time, while you can´t even fly two squadrons from the same, huge airfield... this is just weird... but hey, must look good to you when you don´t notice that land based radar doesn´t work and then you test it against bases without working radar... zzzZZZzzz

more of the sillyness... heck, the lost three fighters of a P-38H squadron is coming in after all the other fighters/bombers while it´s main part hasn´t shown up yet... SILLY... and the silliest about all this is when you get to hear you have to do this or that... god dam, in this area there are so many air HQs, so much aviation support, so much supplies, the squadrons are all elite, forget about the stupid advises, this routine isn´t borked or bugged, it´s just a stupid design and one of the step backs from WITP for sure... not saying the "we all go in at the same time" of WITP was the way to go, but it came reality so much closer than the "we go in all alone while losing three of our fighters every turn" stupidity... wow, I´m getting so fed up... [8|]

hurrey, more prove of how silly it really is... would be cool if someone could change it... won´t happen, it´s perfect after all... must be...

Image

when looking at the loss list today, you may think why the hell is he even complaining, it must have been depressing for the Japanese today... it sure was, having constantly 60-80% of your fighters on the ground due to your dozen radar sets not doing anything (goes for both sides) is totally depressing if you place 200 fighters somewhere and most of them get torched on the ground by a 150 4E bomber strike but at the same time I get so fed up with the fact that the strike routine is so ridicoulosly stupid when it comes down to sweeps in particular... bomber strikes, well, ok, you can live with that as long as you don´t see 150 bombers coming in in 12 strikes, but why on earth are the sweeps looking so stupid? I´m not a long time hardcore BoB player but why couldn´t the responsible take this as an example? Even as a complete noob playing BoB I can´t screw up as much to have the strikes constantly looking so stupid as in AE... you can have things screwed up and that´s good, but making the routine a 99% complete screw up is insane... take 150 bombers, make them attack in two, three or four waves, the waves being 70,40,40 or something like that... but not 100,12,12,12,12... don´t need to comment the 22, 22, 22, 3x2 for sweeps anymore anyway I guess...

there are so many great new features, so many great new routines in AE with even more great thoughts (the different makeup of strikes compared to WITP is an excellent thought) while some of the thoughts turned out to be a not so great routine... what I just can´t understand is that the people in charge insist on these routines being great when noone can seriously think they are when they leave their ego aside... it´s kind of funny when I go back 30 pages and start reading what I was bitching about long ago and you then read things on and on that are now officially seen as bugs (search archs, radar, weather outside of base hexes, pre Cap flak, etc) when it took quite an awful time and quite an awful discussion with too big egos on the pro and con sides... I sure have to work on my tone but the other side sure also has to accept at some point that it never was as perfect as they´ve thought nor is it now as perfect as they still think... there are just too many long time players reporting stuff that it can be overlooked all the time with a comment that people are just too stupid to use the "programme"... most things that are reported on and on sure aren´t "user errors"...

having some Corsairs closer to Timor now I´ve decided to set them to escort as you can never know if the enemy wouldn´t decide to do some LRCAP or put a couple of fighters on Timor and halve a dozen could already be enough to take down more Venturas than I would like as these bombers are quite fragile... every bomber is, except the 4Es...

this wasn´t really a nice encounter for the bombers, the limited number of Georges did quite good, having four 20mm cannons sure is a threat to our bombers... this isn´t looking good for us when more of them would show up... RADAR anyone? Guess there´s a full daitai of Georges at this base, we meet only 25% of them in the air...

lots of dispersed strikes... all coming from the same base... Darwin is a level 9 airfield, you can´t build bigger ones, but isn´t able to send the strikes in in sufficient numbers each, would I place all the bombers in the more or less crappy bases around Darwin and have them attack the same target, I would see far bigger "strikes", even though the bombers would have to coordinate from several bases all around the place with halve a dozen hexes in between...

we were lucky to lose only two of the bombers to the Georges today, both were shot down over the target, none crashed on the way home... the bombers claim 4 fighters in return... the usual two Catalinas crash on nav search, which was as dangerous today as the bomber strikes...

we keep being succesful against enemy tanker convoys... I´ve noticed it a couple of times already, the enemy seems to be very variable with his convoy routine, this one was attacked near Camranh Bay... doubt that Rainer needs his AO a lot for repleneshing his fleet at sea a lot so it´s just another tanker sunk...

this is the reason why we have the fleet in the area... three divs plus support are storming ashore from assault shipping, recon indicates only 10,000 troops defending the place... as has been in other places too already, when we started prepping our troops, we have spotted far more enemy units and with the 100 prep need it was too late to prep them for another target already... as it stands now, the usual assault against an enemy position will consist of three divs plus support and as soon as the place is taken, these units will start prepping for the next target, so roughly every three months one of the Corps will storm an enemy stronghold... if we want to invade places like Timor then we are going to need substantial more troops as intel indicates 125,000 troops on the island (100,000 based at Dili and Lautern)...

the amphib TF has completely unloaded, the "fragments" turned into the parent unit at the end of the day... doubt the 199 defender´s av will be anywhere enough to resist us longer than one or two days... the units all being 100% prepped didn´t take any notable losses during the landing... 100 prep is the way to go...
