IJN plane loss puzzle

Post by mbk2043 »

About two weeks into my game against the Japanese now & for he last two turns I noticed a strange 'ground' loss. 1st -12 Claudes on one turn then 11 Mabels on another. Now I know that there was a CVL sporting these types in/around Rabaul the last few turns but I didn't engage it. I did see 1 xAK hit by patrol in the area, the dutch did manage to spear 3 other xAK-AKs with enough torps to take them down.

Could patrol 'hit' actually have been on the CVL? ... could the planes have been cargo aboard another ship? ... or is it just false reports to get my hopes up? [&:]

Check your ops reports.  Planes on patrol can and DO laucnh naval attacks.  Hits will be shown in the Ops report as opposed to the combat report.  I think you bagged either a CVE or CVL.

I'd think they went down on one of the freighters you hit, there is a chance that you indeed sunk the CVL with patrolling planes, but that seems quite unlikely. The fact that the ground losses are on different days also doesn't support that theory.
