not only did we land without suffering any notable losses, with HQs and 100% prep you also get wonderful adjusted av and the enemy is kicked out of his positions easily... this is the explanation I´ve been looking so long earlier when my 100% prepped units always had awful adjusted av, they were always lacking a HQ in the hex (had only two or three Army HQs back then)... now all my major invasions will be supported by a 100% prepped HQ...

at some point I´m going to invade the place as we just can´t keep up attacking Timor every second day as the losses would just be too high to keep the airfields down... bypassing a stronghold seems to be only an option when there aren´t enough engineers to have the airfield in perfect shape within two days...

not really surprised anymore that the closer based Lightnings go in after the bombers... heck, look at it from the bright side, both squadrons came in TOGETHER! [>:] where the Beaufighters are coming from is beyond me, the show up above but not as "aircraft attacking"... wanted to send a sweep as I had expected to meet some Georges too...

give the enemy working radar and each sweep will be heavily outnumbered... insane...

it was a very bad day for the Lightnings anyway, they took unexpected high losses due to having lots of them damaged and crashing on their way home, losing a weekly replacement for nearly no gain...

first time we bomb Sorong, spotted some two dozen aux there... as expected, we torch some transports... Sorong could be a great airfield in the area, amazingly enough it is neither heavily defended nor being built up by the Japanese... unbelievable to me, but we don´t spot any bases being built up from Northern Guinea all the way North to the Philipinese...

not only is enemy using air transport near the front, he also seems to "rely" on SST as we´ve spotted quite a lot of them lately at enemy bases... both ways probably aren´t enough to make any of the frontline bases a veritable stronghold... I guess the SST and airtransports are used to bring in supplies and take fragments for unit rebuilding back out...

five Venturas and four ac on nav search lost today... what a turn... just for the record, all nav search is being done at 6000ft, 70 or 80 search with 30 or 20 rest at normal range... no matter what ac, they have been crashing like wild since day one of this campaign... insane... in not even two years of war we have lost something like 400 Catalinas of the various types, 95%+ of them on nav search... add in all the Hudsons and Venturas and you easily exceed 500 ac on nav search lost in two years...

my bombers just aren´t capable of doing a good job... understandable when looking at the Venturas because these crews aren´t experts but the 4Es with hundreds of missions for each crew aren´t much better...

even in clear sky, full DL and with full bomb load the hit rate is nothing but poor... add in the fact that the whole USAAF is fighting without a single medium bomber for ground attacks due to the "attack bomber issue" and you get a picture of the situation... [8|] I just need a couple of hundred medium bombers, the 4Es aren´t capabable of doing the job alone...

attack out of Pegu, most of the bombers there failed to locate the target, just as happens 4 out of 5 times in this campaign... got an endless number of messages "bomber fail to locate target due to range or weather"... weather can´t be better than clear sky and the range wasn´t that far anyway... the 4Es in Burma aren´t trained in anti shipping strikes so it´s not surprising they all miss... the medium bombers there are all trained in lownav but all of them failed to fly or failed to locate the target of course...

no idea what this TF is doing there anyway... a raider TF? when the replay popped up I first thought this would be a Cap trap again but not even a single fighter showed up...

21 bomber showed up over the target, some 200 were set to attack... funny WITP and AE world... the positive thing this turn was that we only suffered two ac lost, not a single 4E bomber was lost today...

this was SHOCKING! We haven´t done any pre invasion nav bombardments nor was the airforce attacking the enemy ground troops and therefore encountering Wake Coasal Gun Battalion was absolutely surprising and freightening... no doubt that was a good move by Rainer, we only spotted a couple of enemy units at Dobo and he could be sure that Dobo was on the list of the next targets anyway... I thought this would be a totally easy target with 2 divs plust support coming in, this CD unit could have changed this but thank god our light cruisers were fighting the CD unit that failed to do any damage at this point...

got the feeling that the light cruisers had no ammo left as the LSTs had to fight the enemy coastal defense now themselves... two are hit hard, one went down immediately... we were only unloading supplies at that point and the TF will head out next turn again... no doubt the invasion will be a success, it could have gone bloody though, really bloody... meeting a CD unit was totally unexpected and I guess I should have done some "recon" air attacks to look at what actually is defending the place... but this just always has the same strange smell as lobbing some intelligence shells into an enemy position to look at what is there... everyone seems to be doing it anyway, we´re just used to these things...

I stated in my reply to Rainer that I was quite amazed about meeting Wake CD at Dobo and he said it wouldn´t make sense to have it in the CentPac as my advance is going right into the SRA anyway while ignoring the Central and South Pacific... not really a secret and he has identified our strategy obviously anyway, though I might invade some places in the Pacific if I have troops and ships to do that just to make him paying a bit attention, but as it stands now, all LCUs are tasked for other targets, the invasion TF of 100 ships includes nearly all APA/LST and all carriers are needed to cover the invasions...

Saumlaki is cleared... the combat troops there have already been planning for their next target right after the day they took the base... engineers are also already building up the place... planning to do invasions every couple of weeks now... we have enough troops prepared to go ahead every third week but I also want to build up my bases and this slightly takes longer than 3 weeks, even if we make that a major effort... we usually bring 500+ eng squads plus a hundred eng vehicles at places we want to build up...

there you go, the 4Es were set to 6000ft... and the result? well, the result was that at least a dozen of the bombers have hit BALLOONS and 7 of them crashed... holy crap... the first and last 6000ft attack, we leave the 6000ft nuke attacks to the Japanese... 560 bombs dropped, 115 hits... better than at 10000ft and sure nice in thunderstorms but 20% hit rate is nothing compared to what the IJAAF achieves all the time... a pity... all I am complaining about in the end is the fact that I´m missing HUNDREDS of USAAF medium bombers due to the damned attack bomber issue... this PBEM will probably see the upcoming patch and the fix for the attack bomber bug, then I will decide on what I think about the attack bomber design, if the bombers are even usable and then the next PBEM can be started either with attack bombers or all of them modded out, changed to B-25C medium level bombers...

this PBEM has been going for over halve a year now without any USAAF medium bombers for tactical attacks... more months completely without them to follow... [8|]

the bug left aside, what do you think would happen to attack bombers in such an attack when 4E bombers at 6000ft are totally trashed (losing 7 in one day is a major disaster)... sending in 50 "working" (means unbugged) attack bombers against a base with flak and BALLONS? [&:] forget about it, 4 13mm AA MGs were enough to take down dozens of these useless bombers in training runs against two cut of mini IJN units on Tulagi... this is one of the examples when I say, good thought, bad result... I hope I´m 100% wrong (I really do) and the attack bombers are what they were in real life when the patch comes out, otherwise this new feature has robbed the Allied of all USAAF medium bombers as they can´t be used...

as expected, having a HQ with the troops means excellent adjusted av (never attack without a HQ!) and having no HQ with earlier invasions seems to have been the only reason why the adjusted av looked so awfully while the LCUs still were 100% prepped... the enemy is chanceless, the next attack will take the base...

update on the shipping losses, guess most of the numbers are pretty much spot on except the enemy sub losses, I seriously doubt that we have sunk all of the reported sunk, I tend to think at least a dozen or (slightly more) less are really sunk... what still hurts me was the loss of 3 BB and 5 CVE in the first carrier clash off Groote Eylandt when we only sank 1 CV (a crappy one)

66 enemy TK reported sunk, this has to hurt at some point? This is more than 50% of the currently available Allied tanker force and we only have lost 10 so far which is quite good for the Allied I would say. Any comments of Japanese players on these tanker losses?

Time for all group planes to reach interception is 37 minutes

interesting one... Catalinas have spotted a single CL in earlier turns already, I´ve always thought it would be a single xAKL and it was never attacked... today, some of the bombers took off, we start with the escorts not being able to escort the bombers, which is good as they then dive a couple of Zeroes that are set on LRCAP over the target - which was amazing for me... Beaufighters vs Zeroes when the Beaus have the dive is a clear result...

Aircraft Attacking:
6 x PB4Y-1 Liberator bombing from 1000 feet
Naval Attack: 5 x 500 lb SAP Bomb

here are the bombers, at least some of them that made it to target... 80% of the bombers failed as usual due to "bomber failing to locate target due to range or weather"... lol, having this happening all time seems a bit strange to me... also doesn´t matter that all the bombers got radar, don´t know if it is working or if it has any effect in locating a target... at least it "should"... amazingly enough, the expecte single xAKL turned out to be a single light cruiser... a 500lb bomb penetrates the deck of the cruiser and I guess the enemy will stop these trips again... probably supply fast transports to Biak...

even if we use all the available heavy bomber force (85% of the USAAF heavy bombers on the map are at Darwin, 15% are Rangoon) we are far from dominating an area... sure, the enemy retreats out of range when he doesn´t need to stay there but knocking out airfields for more than short time is impossible and the enemy can move in again at will... while runway damage shouldn´t be a problem, perhaps it should be harder to repair the base to make it harder to maintain aircraft at airfields that have taken more bombs than a usual city in Germany in 44...

[&:] Won´t matter much, I expect the sub to sink but it is still afloat weeks after this attack (but still two months away from reaching Adak)...

SS Snapper was hit by air ASW 29/2/2... retiring... a tanker sunk for one sub probably sunk (would rate the chance to make it 1%) and another one sent home damaged...

it´s occupying most of our airforce in the Darwin area to keep Dili and Lautern suppressed, while suppressed doesn´t mean the enemy couldn´t base ac there and launch strikes as we surely can´t keep the damage near "closed state"...

thought we could bomb this base that was reported to only have aux... the Tojos seem to be leaking Cap that has been at 36740ft... amazingly enough, the Beaufighters on escort some 25000ft lower were diving on the Tojos... [&:] the Lightnings didn´t even show up in the replay even though they are listed in the combat report... [&:] having the dive, the Beaufighters took down three Tojos while damaging the other for no loss... again, try this without the dive...

then we get into the piece meal strike feature again, resulting in the follow on waves of course always meeting more leaking Cap than the first one... this time we had some P-38 with the bombers but the P-38 FAILED to get the dive which went to the Tojos... two Lightnings were shot down for no Tojo lost, the Tojo shown as being shot down went to one of the bombers´ gunners with a couple of Tojos more being damaged by the Liberators...

small B-17 contingent with more sweeping Lightnings, this time getting the dive, shredding the Tojos... all shot down or damaged for not a single shot being fired at the P-38... lol, must be my PBEM only when the dive is the one and only MAJOR factor if you want to massacre the enemy or not...

dot base South of Akyab... first I thought I could build up the port here to move troops in and out from Burma but then decided I´m going to use Rangoon instead... even being in range of enemy LBA, Rangoon got a level 9 port, level 9 airfield and is covered by a British cruiser squadron (can´t send BB up the river) so if the enemy attacks then he´s going to meet a hell a lot of fighters on Cap (the whole airforce in Burma is at Rangoon and we should have working radar from the cruisers and destroyers) and if he decides to attack with his cruisers then he will face the British Navy and lots of bombers at Rangoon that are set to nav attack... not worth it to attack IMO and so far the enemy was thinking the same...

5 mines cleared [:D]

the small freighters sinks immediately, taking down with him some 5% of a base force... that was a bit unlucky because I also had minesweepers moving to Sarmi but they obviously arrived later than this convoy... usually I don´t give much about a minefield once it is spotted so I didn´t even think about stopping this convoy...

interesting one... Rainer orders a surprise attack on Horn Island´s port, there´s an AS disbanded that I haven´t cared about... all bombers miss in bad weather and the AS has been ordered back to Townsville... all our subs are replenishing at Darwin anyway... as soon as Rainer gets intel about no fighters at a base but something else worth being bombed he sends some bombers... not bad but nothing else than an annoyance... last time he has sunk a couple of LCVP... [:D] would be cool if my flak would have any effect though, two AA rgts and two or three base forces at the base...

amazingly high effect of this ground attack... the reason for it wasn´t to damage the enemy but to drop some intelligence bombs (gamey) about what is there... doing this after having been surprised by the Wake CD unit at Dobo which I would never have expected to be there... Taberfane is going to be seized by three rgts...

5 Liberators and 1 Ventura lost again today... with an ongoing air offensive without encountering anything of the enemy airforce we are still losing by far more 4Es than we get as replacement... with a rate of 5 per day we would lose 2.5 times more than we get as a replacement, again, this without encountering a single enemy aircraft, just to keep two enemy bases down... not good...

we had everything in the air again... glad the enemy isn´t putting up any fighter resistance, that way we can at least preserve our fighters too and build up a small stock of P-38 and P-47... I wouldn´t contest our strikes either as long as most of your fighters are grounded as long as land based radar has no effect... I expect this PBEM to become totally reversed in what happens as soon as both sides radar actually functions... this will be bloody... mostly for us I guess as we´re the one on the offense and it doesn´t matter much that our radar isn´t working...

we have long tracked this stack of units first massing in Canton and then marching up the trail towards Liuchow and further on to Nanning... the base has been abandoned and our troops are holding their position further West at Lang Son in wooden terrain behind growing forts... this move was long expected, the enemy wants to cut our supply line from China into Vietnam but this doesn´t matter much as we have more than 100,000 supplies there which will A) last for an eternity and B) more supply will move there overland anyway as it´s not enough just to block the road [:)]

It´s a well know tactic that Rainer splits his units to make his stacks look bigger but I´m smart enough to figure out what really is coming towards me when I look at the total troop count. 17 units looks big but in the end he has broken down 2 divs into three rgt. At Lang Son we have some 3500 Chinese av in perfect condition, there is no chance for the Japanese to do anything but shredding their troops. As it stands now, we can easily hold around Vinh, have troops at Hanoi and Haiphong to counter any Japanese amphib invasion (doubtful one will come), so all in all we occupy some 5-7000 Japanese av in this region while having a stalemate. Not much more I can ask about. [:)]

problem again is the fact that the troops are not 100% prepped but only at 70... 70 means having roughly 1/3 of the units being disabled... as mentioned earlier, I think that´s a bit off as it was just yet another landing that was like an uncontested amphib unloading... wait another 30 days and have the units at 100 and you suffer perhaps 10 squads disabled in TOTAL... we have been in a hurry here (ex defenders of Dobo were retreating towards this base) and we don´t need these units anytime soo, otherwise I´m not going to send any invasion in without having them 100% prepped...

117 Japanese av sounds more than the resistance probably turns out to be... nearly no heavy equipment and we´re also going to fly some air to ground strikes... don´t expect to fail taking the base in the second or third attempt...

out of the eight ac lost today four were recon types... a heavy toll today with only 4 recon Lightnings per month...

bombing all bases in the area round the clock now, even if we field some 900 carrier based ac in the area covering our invasion TF (heading home) at the moment I still don´t want to see air attacks against the fleet... you never now, even an enemy ac on search can put a bomb into one of your carriers, putting it out of action for a couple of months...

Sorong is a level 4 airfield but nearly no Japanese troops there... wonder where the enemy will start putting his ground units to really start defending... if we would take Sorong, our USN Liberators could start bombing ships going to Brunei or Tarakan, this would mean we would rob the enemy of some 500 oil if it gets too dangerous to move ships into the area... therefore I would defend this area at all cost... the enemy seems to see this totally different, while stacking divisions on Timor...

of course it wouldn´t be easy nor save to move reinforcements into the area while being in range of my bombers but with every day that passes, it only gets worse...

Assuming you're a bit ahead of the AAR as you usually are - you should have had the AA proximity shells upgrade by now, if it's in AE at all.

Have you noticed any difference?
