By TF 38 I presume you mean all three USN carrier groups operating in concert?

Seems to me the US needed to shut down the Truk airfields or at least dent the planes. It's only 400 miles to Ponape which means the Japs could counterattack the landing vessels with Bettys and Zero escorts or maybe even Kates. I do wonder if they might have better timed it closer to their planned landing.

It also seems to me Truk would be the spot for the Japs to engage the US carriers. If they go back again, the Jap carriers should show up on day 2 or 3 while half the US carrier planes are on airfield attack. Planes from sunk Jap carriers can retire to Truk. The situation is unlikely to be more favorable at Ponape for a carrier engagement.
Yes, all 3 TGs hit Truk on the first day, then TG 38.3 peeled off to strike Ponape on days 2 and 3.

I asked Jenny about her thinking on this and it was much like yours. She recognized Truk was close enough, and developed enough, to be a staging point for either counter air or counter nav ops. Her thinking was to do a program of strikes in the Carolines that would serve as a substantial drain on J-air assets and thoroughly chew up the airfields.

Another thing was a bit of misdirection. She wanted David and Jeremy thinking in terms of an assault on Truk or perhaps even the near Marianas. She wanted to push the envelope a bit and get them to back off from Babelthuap. That would put Japanese counter ops starting another 500 nm away. She says she knew what was coming (but not the scale) and wanted to clear a 'zone'. If she could reduce Truk's potential, and threaten West and North, she could open the bubble and get some intel/maneuver room.

Japs didn't have all the assets in place to confront TF 38. Jeremy was pretty much in "What do we do now, Batman?" mode. Running hand-to-mouth, but with some cool stuff in the pipeline. He did a rope-a-dope on Jenny and pulled his remaining effective air back to Babelthuap for rrr&r. For the longest time, Jeremy thought it would be a direct attack on Truk. He saw his reinforce scedule and knew, simply knew, that a real big one was coming. He thought the Allies scraped up every cook and baker on the West Coast, gave them a BAR and went for broke.

If the assets would have been there, that would have been a nice shot. Take Truk and there's 3 potential attack vectors that limited Japanese forces would have to orient towards; South to NG and Menado as a jump off for the PI, West to Babelthuap as a jump off for the PI, and North to the Marianas. But the assets just weren't there.

All in all, both sides were playing poker real well, at this point. So far, advantage Jenny.

Do you mean to tell us one of the team captains is female? That is pretty cool.

Independent Mixed Brigade. 4 to 5 Bns, usually without the Regimental support companies, maybe an Arty Bn (maybe not), maybe an Eng Coy or two. Could be chunky, could be thin. [;)]

All the IMB's consisted of formerly Independent Infantry Battalions, usually raised for lines-of-communication and anti-guerilla duty in China. As John said, very light infantry with very few supporting assets.

Hmm. Didn't know that. Good explanation.

Yep. Jenny is the Nav queen. Lt USN, and recruiting poster cute too. Fun to be around. Can sure hold her own though.

Out of town for a few days, back at Ft Irwin. Will do some more when I get back.

Ciao. J

Ok, back from Irwin. Woof !! Shopping in the Dustbowl (oh yeah, that's what they call the Galleria in them parts); sweating my broekie into skin and bones in a Brad at the MOUT center. Did have some fun, though. Got to talk to some of the 11 ACR guys (Gary Owen ! Blackhorse ! That was your unit, yeah?) about their take on op-for sensor-intel and how they model it. Then got to hang with the umpire team dogging the scout dismounts on a nightime M-to-C problem. Boy, that was fun.

But the highpoint was they let me sit with FO-2 during a live-fire Bn exercise. Oohhh, oohhh, what a freakin spectacle !! You wouldn't believe all the waiver forms (in octuplicate) I had to sign to get to do that. They wanted me to hang with the tracs and hump a round or two and gimme a tee-shirt, but it was my first chance in many, many years to be close to a strike, so I whipped out my pen. It was like the 4th of July at Disney World, except the earth was moving. I kept my mouth open, but holly toledo, I darn near pooped my trau from the thud. God !! Artillery is Beautiful !!

Now I'm back, let's see what I can scarf up from the Jeremy/Jenny show. I think there was a DD action that kinda opened things up.

Hey John, this is really neat.  Get those guys going and get typing.

How the heck did you manage to get that far into Ft. Irwin?!  I had to sign on the dotted line to do that, and then they went and sent me off to a few places I'm not too interested in seeing again. [:'(]

Same way you did, probably. My company developed some toys that got picked up by a couple primes and this was the third test round. We have a really good relationship with DOD and the end user. Maybe they were a bit more comfy with us than a bunch of suits from Eaton Systems. Treated us good, but did put us in places we're not too interested in seeing again.

I used to spend a week there every year in my early teens (14-17). I was in a ROTC light infantry battalion that went out three times a year for maneuvers--with Fort Irwin the big one. Live fire, mobile ops, night ops, chemical warfare familiarisation, driving tanks and APCs (under supervision).

Hmm. Didn't know that. Good explanation.

Only that this explanation is not correct:

(1) The IMB's did not have 'formerly' Independent Infantry Battalions (IIB's), their IIB's were and remained IIB's because they did not belong to any regiment. They were 'independent' from regimental organizations.

(2) Only some - the original IIB's and others later formed in China - were of the light type. Those IIB's remained in China (with the exception of some who went to Okinawa in 1945 as part of 62nd Division). They were mainly formed from soldiers who had ended their active service period but were not released from active duty but instead kept in China. There were three types of IIB's: China-Type, Type 1 and Type 2, with different TOE's and containing soldiers from different sources. Only Type 1 IIB's/IMB's served in the Pacific (Type 2 served in the PI, Malaya, DEI and Burma) and were mainly formed from regular (active duty) soldiers send from Manchuria. In 1944 most regular divisions in Manchuria did send roughly 1/3 of their strength, infantry, engineers and artillery, to the Pacific and those troops ultimately formed the IMB's that served as garrison forces for the Pacific islands.
