@ Lützow

Did you play Flashpoint Germany or WinSpMbt ?

You can´t say this games are all lacking, both are one of the best in the genre today.

From my point of view many game-designers today do the misstake to over emphasize balanced gameplay (due to the Pbem thing).

The result is, if your playing against AI you don´t have a big challenge.

It sounds silly, but games like PG or the good old x-com do to offer a much bigger challenge as most new games do.

For example SSG´s Ai is known as a better one, but from the beginning I don´t have lost any battle I played with BII or BIN and I played nearly all the scenarios out there. Not, because of dumb Ai, because the scens are designed for balanced H2H play.

Ok, I just got the game and installed it.

First Impressions Pro:

1. Much improved interface and farily easy to grasp.
2. Excellent "spiral" bound 72 page manual with "colored" player reference card. Units are colored and title page, but hey it's still in color.
3. Map is beautiful, that is if you like board game type maps, which I do.
4. Mouse scroll wheel works for zooming in and out.
5. Basic tutorial on mechanics

Con:
1. UI is still not intuitive
2. No walkthrough on a turn to explain unit icons or combat results.

Ok that is it for now, since all I have done is load and read the tutorial, but I love the map and the ease of the UI compared to RGW and AGW. I won't get to test the scenarios and game play until this weekend.

Flashpoint Middle East is alive and well on my main machine right now. I was adding a couple new features just an hour ago. The research really was a bugger because we became a wee bit over enthusiastic about setting up a data model that can handle any vehicle with any armaments and any sensors in any formation for any nation. Complex. Setting up Israel, Jordan, Egypt and Syria for 1947 to 1989 is driving my colleague nuts. He has the sensors, armaments, vehicles and squads but is stalled on the national organizations of the various formations. The most recent changes (this week and last) were to make the formation data entry process easier and more robust for him and his wife.

With the real formations in at last I can set the 'national parameters' like average training, risk aversion, independence of action, etc and do a final swing through the AI. We have missed Christmas but would have hit it had the data been easier to find and input, and also if a couple of guys that offered to help had managed to click in better.

I have invested all of my spare time since FPG in this game so I'm not about to let it go now!

Cheers, Rob Crandall

You make a fair point - but he still isn't going to make 2010. [;)]

You're right - I just checked and it's not one of the games Erik Rutins mentioned as being in the pipeline for 2010. Oh, well, there's always 2011 [;)]

As I was quoted here I just wanted to make it clear I wasn't suggesting you had dropped FPME or that it was vapourware. On the contrary, I know from testing FPG how passionate you are about the game and the genre.

Thanks. Looking forward to hearing you impressions. My Father served in the 56 war so I have always had an interest in these campaigns. Please let me know what you think of the AI. If it is even reasonable I will buy this in an instant.

Flash Point Middle East !! ... I'm one of the first purchasers of FPG and when I heard about a follow up title many many moons ago I was very interested. I played it to death for several months after I got it to the point of burnout. I'm going to have to dig it out again and reload it ... I haven't even been to the forums in way over a year.

Glad you brought this one up JD.

I got FPG up and running on the latest release (1.1.3) this morning. I forgot how polished and fun that game is. I'll be watching out for FPME. I'm a sure sell when it hits the streets.
