RE: STRATEGIC BOMBING OF JAPAN

Post by racndoc »

Bradley7735.....everyone at Johore Bharu was following a fatigued artillery unit so no one was close to entering Singapore on that turn. Next turn however, everyone should easily reach Singapore so I will switch everyone over to combat mode....artillery units move reallly slow in combat mode.

SEAC and 14th Army troops are close to entering Singapore so everyone is switched over to combat mode for the inevitable shock attack next turn.

I couldnt get the fire level as high as the turn before but the damage inflicted at Nagasaki really seemed to ramp up this turn. The total of strategic bombing losses in creased from 788 last turn to 1640 this turn....so some 850 startegic losses were inflicted this turn. Damage by type include:

MP: 1
HI: 38
LI: 142
Naval ship: 89
merchant ship: 52
reapir ship: 28
armamnents: 5

The bombers are ordered to hit Nagasaki once again tomorrow.....the weather forecast for Nagasaki appears to be much better.

Its strange......StoneAge had held SEAC up at Prachuap Khiri Khan with some 80,000 troops entrenched in jungle terrain for over a year. Im not sure where all those troops went. Possibly they were aboard the troop transports I sank in the South China Sea during the Philippines campaign....at the time StoneAge was trying to ship reinforcements into Luzon.

Six days of relentless bombing of Nagasaki but I cant seem to get a firestrom started. Maybe Im not trying hard enough.

Tomorrow the Allied strategic bombers will switch targets to Shimosenski.

Here is a screenshot of the cumulative damage in Nagasaki:

RE: SEAC RECAPTURES SINGAPORE

Post by Bradley7735 »

I don't think he's running any more AK or TK convoys near the southern part of the HI. I think you're just trading SS's for E's. And, he's doing a better job than you. I think your strategic war has become air only. The SS's are just targets with teeth.

I'm closely following your fire bombing attempts. It seems that with hundreds of carrier bombers and 700 4e's bombing one city for 6 straight days (and not from super long range either), you'd have leveled your target.......

Congrats on Singers. I was holding my breath on your move into the hex. I was betting another repeat of Iwo. But, seems he didn't have massive troops and you did enough air bombing to do the job.
The older I get, the better I was.

STRATEGIC BOMBING OF JAPAN

Post by racndoc »

Bradley7735....you are correct on all 3 points. I am just trading subs for E boats....and Im losing. Thats ok....the function of the subs is to strangle Japan's economy. If StoneAge has stopped running convoys......then the subs have succeeded beyond my wildest dreams. If I was playing as Japan I would run convoys until I lost my last AK/AKL/TK. If I withdraw my subs due to my losses then StoneAge would start running his convoys again. And I agree with you on the firebombing....if the carrier bombers and the 700 4Es cant start a firestorm or level a city after 6 days of continuous bombing then what exactly does it take? I am going to try to find out. The good news is, the fires are still burning and increasing the damage to Nagasaki 2 days after the bombing stops.....read on. In regards to Singers, I had everyone follow a fatigued arty unit to ensure that all units arrived at the same time....the fatigued arty unit in combat mode would have taken over a week to reach Singers. The way it worked out was great. I too was very surprised at how easy it was to overwhelm the defenders there but I had bombed the bejesus out of Singers for over a week so that helped with the disruption.

In regards to Iwo Jima....I may have been the only player on the forums to lose an assault on a non atoll island and forced to withdraw with enormous losses...and like all my assaults its not like I didnt go all-out with extremely large 100% prepped assault forces after extemely heavy, prolonged aerial and naval bombardments.......at least I learned something from that.

Here is a screenshot of Nagasaki 2 days after the bombing stopped. Note how the resources, LI and armament damage ramped up from the residual fire.

The USN carriers of Task Group 58 have run out of carrier ops and will return to port at Naha to refuel, rearm and take on AC replacements. The USAAF heavies have suffered enough damage that my attacks are suffering from the law of diminishing returns so they will be grounded until all the carriers have been rearmed.

Meanwhile, at Strategic Air Command on Tinian(SAC...ie 20th Air Force and 20th Bomber HQs), the brand new all aluminum B-29s sit on the tarmac awaiiting their 1st taste of combat. SAC commander General Curtis LeMay ponders overe the maps of Japan....trying to decide on the destination of the 1st strike......their time is coming.

Im very disappointed with the strategic bombing of Shimonoseki....I achieved a fire level over 500,000 and the damage inflicted was minimal. I need to consider new tactics...including hideous overstacking at frontline airfields.

Here is a screenshot of the miniscule damage inflicted at Shimonoseki:

Post by Bradley7735 »

Target the industries individually. He won't have the time or supply to repair them anyway. Up side is you can focus on one type of industry (ie, HI or Planes or engines, etc) Down side is you only get 2 points per damaged industry, instead of 20 for destroyed by fire.

I don't think the game is modeling fire storms correctly. You should have destroyed half the total industry at Nagasaki. Instead you damaged about half, and destroyed a few. After 6 days of direct targeting, you would have seen all industry damaged.

Or, you could take one for the team and get some good data on the weak fire storm aspect, and possibly get it patched if it's not working as designed. To do that, target Tokyo. If you can't get a fire storm going at Tokyo with 1,000 bombers, then the aspect is not working.

It's sad to see the Allies still sucking the hind teat on surface warfare at this point in your war. IRL, after about 3/43, IJN surface forces sank diddly and took horrendous, one sided beatings. (Yes, they sank Gambier Bay, but lost a few CA's doing it.)
The older I get, the better I was.

STRATEGIC BOMBING OF JAPAN

Post by racndoc »

Bradley....Im a bit disappointed myself about the damage inflicted in the 1000 plane raids. Trust me....I will go after Tokyo with a vengeance....but I have a lot of work to do first with attritioning the Japanese air force....StoneAge has sveral hundred fighters at Tokyo....must be the most critical production site for his AC/engines and stuff. But if you think the B-24 raids were underwhelming.....wait until you see the vaunted B-29s.....read on.

7/10-7/13/44

SUBS

SS Finback is hit by 7 DCs from E boats off Wakkanai.

SS Trout is hit by 2 DCs from IJN ASW TF by Izu Oshima.

SS Trusty sinks ML G-204 near Kobe.

SS KXVI is hit by 20 DCs from E boats and sinks off Yokohama.

SS Ray is hit by 4 DCs from IJN ASW TF near Moppo.

SS S-39 is hit by 3 DCs from E boats by Yokohama.

Allied ports and shipyards are filling up with damaged subs. Bradley 7735 was right....Im losing the sub war to IJN ASW now. Now I know how German U-boat crews felt after mid 1943. This is very expensive but is necessary to keep the IJN merchant marine in port.

The B-29s, designed for high altitude bombing of Japan, are completely ineffectual as they face high winds that throw off their bomb aim....no one knew about the "jet stream" at this time. With the service rating of 5, B-29s appear as if they wont be able to sustain a very robust level of operations. Two days of combat and 50% of the B-29s are grounded for repairs and maintenance. Not only that, but some squadrons report that average repair times could be as long as 13 days. Great.....guess I can fly these planes maybe one turn every 2 weeks.

Meanwhile, USN carriers refuel, rearm and take on replacements at Naha.....and head out to support the next strategic bombing missions. Just found a _MAJOR_ bug on the game....all my USN fleet carriers had their fighter squadrons downsized from 42 AC to 36 AC....and the divebomber squadrons were downsized from 32 AC to 15 AC. Now instead of the 12 CVs able to project 384 DBs....they can only send 180 DBs....the US Navy had more DBs available on carrier decks in 7/42.....whats up with this. The US Navy has been completely neutered. I posted this glitch in the tech section so hopefully a fix will be coming or this game may be borked. Sigh.....

Ive posted a screenshot of the damage inflicted by the mighty B-29s at Nagoya....looks like they scratched the paint on a couple of buildings. With results like this I wouldnt be surprised if the Pentagon scrapped the entire B-29 program. In defense of the B-29s, I admit that their ground bombing skill and experience is only in the 40s while the B-24s have ground bombing skills in the 70s and experience in the 60s......again I find it difficult to train the B-29 aircrews even at 100% training for several months......they train very slowly compared to the other 4Es.....dont seem to fly as much and perhaps this is also affected by the service rating.

RE: STRATEGIC BOMBING OF JAPAN

On a more positive note, the fire started at Nagasaki continues to burn 4 days after the bombing stops....although its almost out now. The damage to the various industries continues to accumulate and Ive attached a screenshot of the current situation:

BTW, did you check damage inflicted from City Attack target menu or from mouseover only? Former is way more accurate, for some reason.

RE: STRATEGIC BOMBING OF JAPAN

Post by crsutton »

Why don't you just swap them out for veteran B24 crews?

RE: STRATEGIC BOMBING OF JAPAN

Post by racndoc »

crsutton.....good point about swapping out the crews of the B-29s with veterans. However, I wont swapout the precious B-24 crews to the B-29s....the B-24 crews are vital to the Allied strategic bombing effort. Instead, Ive been training replacements for the B-24 pilots. After the fall of Luzon, virtually every Allied 2E bomber not involved in the Singapore campaign was put on ground bombing training to serve as replacements for the B-24s. I dont like all the micromanagement but I will make an exception for the B-29s. I will swap out the 2E bomber pilots into the B-29s. They are not as yet as highly trained overall as the current B-24 pilots but they are much better than what is flying the B-29s now.

710-7/15/44....REPLAY

StoneAge and I were unaware of the v.1106g upgrade that has been out for awhile.....we were still using v.1106d. On 7/14/44, all of my USN carrier DB squadrons autodownsized from 32 AC to 15 AC and my carrier fighter squadrons autodownsized from 42 AC to 36 AC. I posted on this in the support thread and michaelm was nice enough to analyze my save and inform me that we need to upgrade. Michaelm also went into the game and rebuilt my carrier squadrons to normal TOE, but then he informed me that they would again autodownsize when I attempted to reload the turn. Michaelm was right, even though I 1st upgraded to v.1066g all the USN carriers groups immediately autodownsized. It seemed to be a function of them returning to port. So StoneAge and I had to backtrack 3 turns to 7/10/44 and then upgrade to v.1066g with the USN carriers still at sea. Whew!

Well it worked. We replayed the last 3 turns and are writing orders for the 7/16/44 turn and the USN carrier squadrons have NOT autodownsized. Not much happened on the replay over the next 3 turns from 7/10-7/15/44. I put everything back a couple turns so I could keep the USN CVs out at sea an extra turn just to make sure. StoneAge at first thought that IJN ASW was less lethal in v.1066g vs v.1066d for the first 2 turns but then last turn I had 1 sub take 42 Dcs and sink from E boats and another sub took 39 Dcs and sank from another E boat. StoneAge also feels that his fighters are doing better in v.1066g when he flew a couple sweeps over my bases but we will see next turn when I really resume hostilities.

So next turn Im sending the USN CVs out of port in Okinawa to conduct another port strike at Osaka(only its gonna happen one turn later than last time). I like the thought of destroying the Japanese merchant marine at anchor but the main reason for this is to spend 2 days destroying Japanese CAP over the target before the 4Es come in for strategic bombing. Im still trying to start a firestorm for the 1st time.

Ive attached a screenie of Simonseki which is still burning from the bombing that ended 4 days ago....and the damage continues to accrue.

Thanx again michaelm for all your help!

CARRIER OPERATIONS OFF JAPAN

Post by racndoc »

7/16-7/17/44

SUBS

SS Angler sinks E Sado off Wakkanai but is hit by 3 DCs in return.

SS Finback is hit by 16 DCs from E boats and is lost off Wakkanai.

SS Mingo is hit by 8 DCs from E boats near Aomori.

SS Flounder is hit by 26 Dcs from E boats by Yokohama and is sunk.

I dont agree with my opponents analysis of IJN ASW in v.1106g...if anything it is even more lethal.

The Allied heavy bombers evidently created a level 720,000 fire but still no confirmation of a fire storm. Last turn the Allied strategic bombers had inflicted a total of 3416 strategic damage points from the attacks on Nagasaki and Shimonoseki and now there are 4278 strategic damage points...so over 850 strategic damage points were inflicted this turn.

We succeeding in creating a fire level over 1.1 million......but still no confirmation of a firestorm. Japanese strategic losses increased last turn from 4278 to 4940 so less than 700 strategic loss points were inflicted.....very disappointing for a 1.1 million level fire.

Japan has accumulated 5882 ponits of strategic losses so far so over 800 strategic damage points were inflicted this turn. Its difficult to maintain any kind of tempo with strategic bombing operations as the heavy bombers.....and especially the B-29s....are not very robust. After 6 days of continuous ops less than half of the heavy bombers are available for air ops.....for the B-29s its less than a third.

So I can do about 6 days of ops before the law of diminishing returns takes over.....and then all the heavy bombers stand down for 6-8 days for maintenance and the Allied carriers return to port for rearming and replacement AC. With an average raid causing around 350 strategic point losses...I can inflict maybe 1000 points/week of startegic damage. With the Allies at 71,000 points and Japan at 30,000 points, it will take me about 5 months to gain a 3:1 advantage which might cause a Japanesze autosurrender in 1944.

5th Fleet retruns to Okinawa to refuel and rearm. While Curtis LeMay's B-29s are stood down for maintenance and repairs, 21st Bomber Group begins to arrive on the US east coast. An additional 50 B-29s are available for combat and they should be able to stage to Tinian before the next round of strategic air attacks.

Here is a screenshot of the current fire level and damage at Osaka:

Your strat points will go down over time. You're attacking the juicy targets right now. At some point, they will have fewer undamaged stuff and you'll need to attack the small cities. So, it may take more like 6-8 months to gain those strat points.

Just theorizing......
The older I get, the better I was.

Bradley7735....good point about the drop off in strategic bombing points.....looks like bombing Japan is subject to the same law of diminishing returns as the operational tempo my heavy bombers. If your thesis is correct.....then this game will be ended by the clock(1-1-45) rather than by a 3:1 autovictory.

STRATEGIC BOMBING OF JAPAN

The B-29s stand down at Tinian while the B-24s/Liberators rest at Naha, Nago, Amami Oshima and Tanegashima. The USN fast carriers sail back to port at Naha to rearm and take on AC replacements.....and the CVEs sail back to Tanegashima to do the same.

The fires continue to burn at Osaka. It appears that the manpower and HI damage has really ramped up since we stopped the bombing 2 days ago. The HI had suffered (428) damage after 6 days of bombing and now stands at (718) damage 2 days after the bombing stops. The manpower had suffered 119(20) damage after 6 days of bombing but now stands at 81(58) 2 days after the bombing stops.....that means some 42% of the manpower is now damaged at Osaka. Im not sure that an atomic bomb causes that much damage to manpower......maybe I did start a firestorm here and it wasnt noted by the game. Total strategic damage increased over 700 points last turn from the fire and now stands at 6586.

OSAKA: BOMB DAMAGE ASSESMENT

Four days after the bombing of Osaka stops the fires there continue to burn. HI damage from last turn increased from 718 to 870 this turn. So the 438 HI damage inflicted after 6 days of continuous bombing has doubled from the fires in the 4 days following. Manpower damage increased from 81(58) last turn to 74(65) this turn. So the manpower damage of 119(20) inflicted after 6 days of bombing has nearly tripled in the 4 days following.

To put this in perspective, Hiroshima has a manpower of 13 and Nagasaki has a manpower of 11. After 6 days of bombing at Nagasaki, I had only damaged 1 manpower...ie 10(1). With the fires 4 days after the bombing stopped, MP was still at 10(1). At Shimonoseki, the manpower was still at 8(0) after 6 days of bombings and 4 days of fires afterwards. Something different seems to have happened at Osaka....and I think I may have created a firestorm that is not reported in game.

Look at what happened when fission type nuclear bombs were dropped at Nagasaki and Hiroshima in RL....if you assume that the atomic bombs caused 50% casualties in both cities(which it didnt) then you would see something like 7(6) in Hiroshoma and 6(5) in Nagasaki following detonation of atomic bombs.

The scale here at Osaka after firebombing sees manpower damage increased 10 fold from Hiroshima and Nagasaki nuclear attacks....and if this is linear I would anticipate something like 600,000-700,000 casualties following my latest attack.....and the doubling of HI damage from fires following the cessation of the bombing seems to back this up. The damage from this firebombing of Osaka seems to more likely resemble the aftermath of a thermonuclear blast. Japan's strategic damage points increased another 700 from last turn and now stands at 7256.

Another way to test this will be the strategic bombing of Tokyo. A strategic bombing attack at Tokyo, however, will be more problematic. StoneAge seems to have massed most of his remaining air force there...over 600 planes including 250 fighters. So he may also be planning a massive kamikaze attack on 5th Fleet when Tokyo is hit.

I botched the rearming/replacements of the fleet carriers at Okinawa. I put several carriers in port at Naha to repair minor damage and a new upgrade cycle kicked in on the Essex carriers so my ships will be stuck in port for another 10-12 days.

I will use that time to close the airfields at Tokyo. This turn, 6 squadrons of my newest USAAF long range fighters........P-38Ls and P-47D25s based at Tanegashima....will sweep the skiies over Tokyo. Then I will use the B-24s and Liberators to shut down the airfields at Tokyo.

STRATEGIC BOMBING OF JAPAN

SS Bang is hit by 12 DCs from IJN ASW TF off Moppo.

SS S-39 sinks E Chiburi by Utsonomiya but takes 8 DCs in return and is sunk.

SS Blackfin is hit by 8 DCs from E boats near Izu Oshima.

CENTPAC: AIR OPERATIONS OVER JAPAN

Three squadrons of P-38Ls sweep Tokyo at 32,000' and 3 squadrons of P-47D25s sweep Tokyo at 37,000'. StoneAge, in return, sweeps the skiies over the CVEs at Tanegashima. When the turn is over Japan has lost another 99 planes in A2A combat vs 23 Allied.

StoneAge still has over 1000 AC stacked at Tokyo and Yokohama. Out of 150 P-38Ls and P-47D25s at Tanegashima last turn, maybe 75 are operational this turn. We have to knock out Japanese CAP at Tokyo/Yokohama before the expensive B-29s go in so more drastic measures are called for.

Two more squadrons of fresh P-38Ls and P-47D25s are staged into Tanegashima to join the 6 battered squadrons. . Next turn they will again sweep Tokyo and escort some 350 B-24s from Tanegashima and Amami Oshima to knock out the Tokyo airfields.

Half of the Essex carriers are stranded in port completing upgrades so no fast carriers are available for offensive ops this turn. Instead, over 40 CVEs will debark Tanegashima and conduct a series of strikes on Yokohama. 20 of the CVEs will hit the airfield at Yokohama and 20 CVEs will hit the shipping in port there. After the CVEs are done, some 350 B-24s and Liberators based on Okinawa will hit the airfield at Yokohama.

CV Franklin completes repairs of the minor damage suffered from 2 sub launched torpedoes a month ago. She still has 37 FLT damage but if I send her back to Pearl she will basically miss the rest of the war. I will instead send CV Franklin to Ulithi where we have 2 ARDs and 12 ARs....its our major forward repair base. I will put her on "critical" "repair ship" and see what happens.
