LEarn to play...

Post by Knife »

Im new to the game, very new. Although the games tutorials are great I was wondering where else can I learn to play?

As in learn what units to pick and how to do specific tactics, these forums are good too but any websites?

Well the AI *can* be a challenge if you haven't played a zillion times, so if you just want to practice "which units beat which" then you can just play against the AI. Just crank up the number of AI buypoints until you nearly lose. That's the way I learned the basics, then I started PBEM'ing.

Uh-oh, it's time again for...

Wild Bill's Tanks at Munda Mini-Campaign

Seriously!! This is the training camp for learning to use armour with infantry (and vice-versa). This campaign brought about a satori, an enlightenment in tactics for me.

Other than that, I'd say there are two things that helped me:

1.) This Forum. Just run through each of these SPWAW folders and anything that catches your eye, read. (I'm not particularly fond of the search utility, it doesn't seem to handle phrase searches.) Heck, set it to display posts from date: The Beginning. Search for "Smoke" or "Recon," those'll get you some interesting topics.

2.) Play the World War II campaign. Start in 1939. Use at least a Company, or the maps will be much too massive (IMnsHO). Learn as you play. After a couple years in battle, you'll end up with more points than you can use. GOOD! Change units you don't 100% need into units you haven't used. That's how I learned to use recon units (after reading threads). Finally, when that gets boring, I have four words for you:

I agree with Irinami, the Tanks at Munda campaign is great... I have now completed 2 scenarios. Lovable, small scenarios, not very hard (although I have dipped the preferences to my favor). Makes me want to hit my head with a sledgehammer everytime I make a silly move and drive my tanks at mines.
