I think 10,000 men = 1 division is the usual way I do it but it seems to be wildly out more often then not...

Interesting how you gauge enemy troop strength. I'm so crap at that.

What rule of thumb do you use gauge things roughly? 2500 spotted men = 1 Bde = ~150AV?

in this case it wasn´t that hard because I also knew (or better say I expected it) to meet the divs that were defending Darwin months ago and were evacuated to Timor after the loss of Darwin. As soon as we had Darwin we haven´t seen any big TFs going to Timor to evac them, so I expected something like four divs between Dili and Lautern.

It´s not really the troop count alone, it´s more a gut feeling of number of units, troop count and vehicles. Guess recon showed something like 65000 troops at Lautern with a couple of hundred vehicles. So the guess were two divs plus tanks plus support units. As we always had heavy flak fire above the base (heavy in comparison to everywhere else) I´ve also expected dedicated AA units which only turned out to be only one with some IJ base forces.

Going with your example, I would look at it from the other way around. Let´s say it´s a small base and you get recon of 2500 men. Well, that´s probably not a bde, but only a small base force defending the place. 150 av defending the base? Hmm, would say, 3 units, 9-10000 troops coming from intel. In the end only 4-5000 troops, a small base force, a construction unit or AA unit and one of these bgd sized Japanese garrison units that are in AE. Like I´ve said, it´s always more a gut feeling that incorporates lots of things like importance of base, general situation (like the evac from Darwin to Timor), unit count (which usually is spot on when doing recon) and troop count (which usually is nearly twice than what actually is there).

going with recon, I would have more tended to say it would show me close to 20000 troops for a division. If you take my Lautern example, recon said 65000 troops, actually combat troops there in the end are 30000. Add in the support troops and you end up somewhere below 40000 I guess.

edit: a really easy way to get 100% correct intel is of course to use "intelligence" bombs. Just like the intelligence artillery bombardments that give you the exact troop statistic of the enemy you can also fly a couple of ground attacks and you will see all enemy units there. It´s kind of an exploit though to me if it is only used for "recon" purpose so I usually don´t do it. Though I´m using the "intelligence" artillery bombardments as this is when our troops are already at the place and you have no way to send out recon squads so the artillery is doing this job.

Yeah, I do drop intelligence bombs every so often, but it seems a bit cheap.

That in itself is a very useful to know point...

I am starting to develop a theory about the never ending dive and how it why it happens and how a unit in the game has the potential to "break" the dive and then gain it in combat. The way I am seeing it is that there are two critical factors that determing the never ending dive slaughter. They are speed and "climb rate". I think speed is the most important factor but we all have been overlooking climb rates as a factor.

This is why the poor wildcat is the suck all fighter for me. With a horrible climb rate and slower speeds this plane just seems to get eaten alive and constantly get hammered by the endless dive. In our game we set a height limit to 29,000 feet but this was before I realized that the F4F can not quite make it to 29,000 feet, so zeros and oscars at the permitted 29,000 feet get endless dives and murder wildcats. Due to poor speed and no climb the wildcat cannot fight back and will never take the dive from a higher flying Japanese plane. The real life strengths for the wildcat vs zeros and more so the oscar are just not modeled into the game. (Radios and the ability to extend away (refuse combat) from spotted diving planes just are not a factor) P40s are a little better because although they cannot climb vs the zero and oscar, they are farily fast and this will help them take the dive away "some of the time" Of course the tojo is both faster or as fast as any 1st generation Allied fighter and has a "sick" climb rate as well. We all know what the tojo does to 1st generation Allied planes including the P40. Later generation army planes such as the lightning and P47 don't outclimb many Japanese planes but have such a speed advantange that this does not seem to matter. The hellcat is a dream. At first the stats don't look impressive as it is not as fast as the army planes but it is faster than Mr. Zero and Oscar and also outclimbs them. In my game the hellcat is eating them up and seems to beat up the tojo as well. I have actually been putting my hellcat squadrons ashore in some situations. They hardly lose any planes in combat and are on a killing spree. This actually trains them up quicker than anything else and the pilots are becoming very elite. And, their service rating of one is a big deal when flying from advance bases.

Let me know what you think and observe. All factors are important but I think the dominant factors affecting the "dive" issue are speed and climb rate.

Look at the climb rate for the P38-H vs other versions. I am beginning to think that I might not want to change over to later models. You will get yours before I do and I would like to hear your thoughts. If I am correct then perhaps late war Japanese fighters will not be such a threat as most have only moderate climb rates and none are as fast as Allied 2nd generation planes. Then again, if he is producing 22,000 fighters a month, it might be a problem....[;)]

to be honest, while I still am watching it closely, I have given up on really looking for a logic behind it. There seems to be some magic behind 6000ft, for what reason ever, as this seems to work quite well for the moment for my enemy. The first encounter in my PBEM between Tojos and Hellcats was a clear 4 or 5:1 for the Tojos, as you can imagine, it was the never ending that has led to that result. It made Rainer quite optimistic and has depressed me a bit but we haven´t had much action with the Hellcats ever since, except the carrier engagement where they were clearly shredding the Zekes on escort, getting something like a 10:1.

Split Cap so far has never been useful for both players in this PBEM, having a fighter with a higher ceiling than the enemy always has been the ace card and now there seems to be some success with 6000ft Cap and sweep which didn´t work at 5000ft or 10000ft but perhaps this is just plain luck, no clue what is really behind it.

All I can say about the whole issue is once again that the routine is totally borked when one side is ending up in the never ending dive as this leads to totally loopsided results. The routine always was and still is working very well IMO if the engagements are dynamic, means no never ending dive.

As it is now, Rainer is very conservative with his production, he´s producing more fighters than I get (speaking about those I actually can use like Corsairs, P-47, P-38 etc) but which Japanese player isn´t doing that. In no way is he doing anything weird with his production which is something you can only really appreciate in a PBEM, especially when you read about other ppl posting things like "I´m producing 1600 Georges/Franks in 7/43". add in the bad weather in 8 out of 10 days and there´s not much you can do other than flying attacks at a rate that is bar any realism... but hey, my patrol aircraft take more losses flying nav search than my bombers do attacking heavily defended airfields...

the weather model is as great as it was in WITP, wonder why there just isn´t a die roll from 1-6 for the different conditions... getting clear sky is like a chance of 1:20 it seems... a die roll from 1-6 would still be more realistic than what it is now, while noone ever posted how the weather routine really "works"... guess it´s common thinking that it is borked though...

we haven´t spotted any aircraft at Koepang when we´ve ordered this strike but the enemy obviously was preparing for a strike today (which obviously didn´t launch)... we duel with some Zekes that aren´t a threat to the 4E and torch some ac on the ground... guess one Zeke and one Judy daitai were transferred to Koepang... not sure what Rainer wanted to attack...

CV Lexington has been fully repaired and is leaving Capetown today... not sure if I take the direct way to Darwin to meet the fleet or if I´m going to send the carrier around OZ... the carrier got a six DD escort but sending the carrier alone to Darwin directly could perhaps be a problem because even a couple of CVEs could pose a serious threat... the carrier is in transit without any aircraft, which is quite stupid from today´s view but 9 months earlier I thought it would be a good idea to have Lexington´s squadrons available in OZ... anyway, first station for the carrier TF will be Perth to refuel...

"surprise" strike against this base, thought the enemy has based some Zekes here... excellent weather but without previous recon not much to hit... if you locate the target, an airfield, what advantage is it to have lots of recon compared to none? When you locate the target, shouldn´t you be able to hit it as good or bad, no matter if you first saw a photo of it? Of course, if you can find it...

this tanker convoy is the fuel shuttle for Darwin, also lots of big xAK convoys are bringing fuel to Darwin... as soon as we seem to bring fuel stocks to decent levels there, the fleet refuels once and everything is bone dry again... we are in 11/43 now, I haven´t even lost two dozen TK IIRC and have received at least two or three times the number of tankers lost as reinforcements (bigger ones that those that were lost), have used the tanker fleet nonstop and am still struggling to keep the fleet in supply of fuel. I have NEVER dropped a drop of fuel somewhere in Australia where the HI there could suck it up, I´ve used fuel hubs on New Zealand and Tasmania, no chance to build up anything bigger than a couple of hundred thousand tons of fuel. Sounds a lot but if there isn´t a huge tanker convoy coming in soon then these stocks are drying up quickly. As it stands now, I can keep the fleet supplied with fuel at Darwin, maintain some 250,000 fuel in New Zealand and that´s it. Now if I would bring fuel to OZ´s industry, then I would always be dry as OZ´s HI sucks up something like 60,000 fuel a month.

A tip to every Japanese player, sink three of four dozen big tanker and you slow down the Allied by months.

even if the kills in the combat report are totally off the mark you can still see how the fight turned out to be... I´m glad that this was the only Tojo sweep today because the Tojos had the NEVER ENDING DIVE!!! [X(] Am I nuts? On one side you´ve got Tojos at extended range flying at the (for the moment) magic altitude of 6000ft and on the other side you have Thunderbolts that are flying LRCAP at 42000ft. As they are flying LRCAP I expect them to be at the set alt because they aren´t "scrambling" in this hex and I guess it should be possible for them to reach the ordered alt when they fly 45 miles (while I bet this isn´t modelled at all anyway). And then? Then the Tojos that are flying 36000ft LOWER than the Thunderbolts get the dive right from the start until the very end of the engagement. If this routine isn´t totally borked... but there sure are excuses or explanations for all this weird stuff going on...

during the replay, we lose 7 Thunderbolts for 1 Tojo, end result with crashes on the way home and write offs seems to be 9:3. So Tojos that get shred when being dived achieve a 7:1 with the never ending dive. Please someone stand up, open the mouth and yet again tell me the dive isn´t the all ruling factor of this borked routine. And then I stand by what I´ve said dozens of times already, the routine probably isn´t that off, it´s this stupid dive idiocy that is so totally borked. It´s physically just not possible in an engagement like this to see the Tojos at 6000ft getting the never ending dive against Thunderbolts that are flying 36000ft higher. Get rid of the dive stupidity (tone it down dramatically) and have these dynamic engagements that bring up realistic results.

Wow, looks like air combat is much more broken than I thought...

I guess I'll try this magic altitude thing and we'll see what happens.

Are the P47s really at 35+k feet though? I suspect there may be a difference between ordered height and actual height. And given land based radar is known to be broken, perhaps with almost no warning your CAP just doesn't always make it to their patrol altitude.

I do think altitude is just too much of a factor though, it remains #1. It may have been #1 IRL but on an individual basis, 100 fighters all diving at once onto separate victims each is where things come adrift.

I do think altitude is just too much of a factor though, it remains #1. It may have been #1 IRL but on an individual basis, 100 fighters all diving at once onto separate victims each is where things come adrift.

like I´ve said, the P-47 were patrolling in the adjacent hex, set to 42000ft so I guess they would be somewhere between 20000 and 42000ft as they were patrolling there the whole day. But I´m sure this isn´t modelled and LRCAP underlies the same things as Cap, speak scrambling and such. [8|] But there should still be enough of the fighters ABOVE 6000ft when all are set to 42000ft. It´s the "should" again and just because it would be reasonable to think they "should" doesn´t mean the airroutine comes any close to what you think would be reasonable.

still being far ahead in the game we just had several big engagements with different types of Japanese fighters against my P-47, Hurricanes and Spitfires. Now since Rainer found out that 6000ft seems to work better than 1000, 2000, 3000, 4000, 10000, 14000, 20000 or 30000ft he is constantly sending in EVERYTHING at 6000ft. I´m doing the stupid layered Cap thing that is just as useless as it ever was. Now bet on the outcome. We have the P-47 at 42000ft, the enemy comes in and the messages are as follows:

35FS diving from 42000ft (this message implies the squadron actually is at 42000ft)

following message:

Tojo diving on P-47 (and the Tojos are at 6000ft)

this then goes on and on and on until the smile in my face (because the whole routine is so ridicoulos) starts fading away... so tell me why it is so ridicoulos and tell me why not even physics apply to this masterpiece of computer programming?

You have 50 P-47 high (higher than the 20 enemies). Then you get the message "xy fighter squadron diving from 42000ft". Just to get the next message immediately "Tojo diving on P-47". So the P-47 were diving down like a comet, overpassing the Tojos, slow down dramatically to enable the Tojos to catch up and DIVE on the P-47. Sorry, you don´t have to be the oh so great fighter pilot of real life to tell that this is hardly possible? And the funny thing was, that you then get three dozen of these messages one after another...

Perhaps the messages are all just chrome and don´t mean anything (the message DIVE definetely means something because this is what either kills you high or shreds the enemy all the time) but then you just have to wonder why always the same messages lead to a big victory or big disaster. If you don´t get all this stupid dive a on b messages then the routine works just fine. Everytime you see one side totally shred the other side, there are these messages involved. So when you have 35 Oscars taking out 30 P-47 (taking out doesn´t mean shot down as that´s hardly something the Oscars can do with the P-47 - taking out in terms of damaging and reducing Cap) then you see three dozen dive messages. When 30 P-47 shoot down 25 Oscars, Tojos, Zekes for two P-47 lost then you first see a couple of dozen dive messages.

This is so ridicoulos I don´t even wonder that the main people in charge of this part of the game aren´t even playing the game. It must hurt their eyes exactly as much as mine (probably even more as "they got shot at in real life" [8|]).

Two days ago I´ve counted up the dives in one of these bigger engagements. The enemy has been at 6000ft, some 110 fighters incoming. We were at 42000ft (with some 70 fighters) and 20 more at 6000ft. The Japs had the dive for more than 70 times right from the start before it was over for the first time! With only the attacker diving, not a single dive for the defender during this time. Sure sounds realistic. And most of the time it first said "Allied squadron diving from 42000ft", followed by "Japanese fighter diving on Allied fighter". Just for the record, this sure hasn´t something to do with being Allied or Japanese, it´s just a borked routine. Then the "dive" changed sides, seeing the Allied fighters diving for two dozen times (taking out more enemies than vice versa during the first happy dive - but that´s because we field P-47 and the enemy fields Oscars). When there were nearly no enemy fighters left in the replay screen (only 50% showed up immediately - these 50 got something like 70 dives against enemies 30000ft higher than them [8|]) there were these messages saying "4 Tojos arriving". Ok I´ve thought, with them coming in in bits an pieces, we can take care of them, they were at 6000ft too of course. And every messaged "4 Tojos arriving" was followed by "Tojo diving on P-47". LOL! But what is even more funny is the fact that the "bait" I had at 6000ft (remember the funny split Cap tips) is not dived on! The "magic alt" or just something that is stupidly happening by accident? I reall don´t know. What I do know is that the whole situation is totally borked and if you watch every combat replay and get all these messages and look at the results after getting such messages then I wonder how anyone could deny that it is beyond being funny. That´s just like the early bug in WITP when you were bombing from 40000ft and the game thought you were bombing from -500 while being immune to flak but achieving mega hit rates. In AE´s case I doubt it´s a bug, it seems to be more of a flawed routine because a bug can be reproduced all the time. Well, the flawed routine seems to reproduce itselve too, we just still have to find the button on how to do it every single time.

There is no doubt that the intention of creating a new air routine was great and this is also highly appreciated. But if you actually look at the ridicoulos result in the end, while still saying it´s oh so great is just beyond me. Then saying the dive isn´t the all ruling factor is even more off, just proves what was already said by themselves, they don´t even play the game. [:(] Having the dive in my version of the masterpiece is like day and night. Get over this stupidity like it is now, or get it to work like it was intended to work. You´ve got climb rates, you´ve got speed. You´ve got heights at where the fighters are. Tactical situations that clearly show an advantage or a disadvantage. And it´s not that hard to tell WHO is going to dive on the enemy. If slower aircraft are lower and the far faster ones are higher then tell me how the slower ones can get four dozen "dives" on the faster ones when the moment before you get a message of "faster, higher fighter squadron is diving down on slow sitting duck lower"??? Now it´s just some kind of broken flip coin. While I find the fact funny that the enemy is endlessly diving from 6000ft against far higher Cap, it at least makes it obsolete to say that only the fighters´ ceilings count. To point it out again, the fighters I had at 6000ft weren´t dived, all others were (and all these were HIGHER). Beyond sanity IMO. Too judge the tactical situation in the engagements isn´t hard, a pity it just doesn´t count at all.

the enemy sends a small strike to attack the invasion TF at Lautern which was quite disturbing, I wouldn´t want to think about what the enemy could do if four dozen Nells would have shown up... the 11 Hellcats (leaking Cap from the carriers the hex North) did a good job but couldn´t stop them all but only four dropped their fish... don´t know why none of them shows up in the combat report as attacking the ships... 10 of them being shot down showing up in the loss list seems excessive...

then we have some Hellcats from the carriers escorting land based strikes... this shouldn´t happen at all... you have a penalty for land based LRCAP over carriers due to the reason mentioned in the manual but on the other hand, carrier based fighters escort land based bombers (which they clearly shouldn´t)... oh well...

CV Bunker Hill completed repairs of battle damage in Sydney... means we have all our carriers ready again, bringing our total strenght of carrier based aircraft to 1200... the carrier is leaving Sydney to join the fleet in Darwin...

TF 156 encounters mine field at Balikpapan (64,97)

Japanese Ships
E Yurijima
xAK Kyosei Maru, Mine hits 1, on fire

1 mine cleared

Argonaut delivered some mines, one of them finds a freighter but the ship isn´t really impressed it seems... doubtful that more ships will hit any mines... mines aren´t much more than an annoyance at best... perhaps I´m starting a mine offensive in late 44 with some B-29 and due to the low supply of mines I have to save them until then anyway... and Argonaut usually has to stay in port for one month to have enough mines in the pool to send her out...

one of the small supply convoys in the frontline... usually I´m using xAKL or LCT for the frontlines as that´s easily enough after all the AKA/LST dropped ten thousands tons of supplies during the one day invasion unloading...

ouch, level 6 forts are still helping the enemy quite a lot... we kill some enemy "tanks" as the tank units were in the lead but leave the three enemy divisions totally untouched... one of the Marine divisions seemed have taken most of our losses...

and one of the combat eng units was totally shred in just one attack, don´t know why small units are hit so hard at times, you can easily have it 100% destroyed and not only disabled as we already have experienced...

surprise attack, guess Rainer thinks that´s the place my bombers were coming from... the sweep that is coming in takes out all fighters in the air, either taking them down or sending them home damaged... these fighters had no chance against diving Oscars, Rainer obviously was sure about his fighters having a higher ceiling than mine, otherwise they would have come in at 6000ft... our Chinese pilots were trained up to 70 but this didn´t help at all...

knocking out the home bases of enemy recon is a good thing as this keeps the enemy blind... when we´ve done our "big weeks" out of Darwin we´ve kept the enemy totally blind, no recon over our bases and no nav search when we parked our fleet just off the targets... but sustaining this is more or less impossible due to lack of USAAF medium bombers...

lost four B-24 to ops today... best thing you could do is have these squadrons fly two attacks per week... while losses aren´t excessive, overuse them and you suffer for it... and that´s again the time when I start crying about not having a single USAAF medium bomber squadron due to that silly attack bomber bug...
