Hi PzB - I've wondered about the 100% airfield damage before. From what I have seen I I've come to the conclusion that routine gets confused by runway and airbase damage with the result that if, the airbase is heavily damaged (+ a bit of FOW) the percentage can still be very high even though the runway has little or no damage, so I wouldn't pay much attention to the damage levels shown - but I'd guess you've already come to that conclusion.
BTW the port gets repaired last, runway first and airbase second, so airfields can be opened very quickly with lots of engineers.

That was my point. Capturing Kalemyo isn't relevant, destroying the Allied troops would be, as it would set Andy back for a year.

Why would the allied units be destroyed if he captures Kaleymo, they have at least two other retreat-paths? Incidentally I believe he will be able to trace supply that way aswell.

I'm afraid we're verging on a thread hijack here, so I'll hush after this post, but my understanding of PzB's intentions are to take Kalemyo, thus trashing the units there (destroy was a poor choice of words as I agree they will be able to retreat, but retreated units are damaged enough in AE that they require lots of rehab).

You're all right in one way or the other!
Capturing Kalemyo won't win us the war in Burma and enemy troops will most likely be allowed to retreat - our tank unit moving in from the flank will need another 22 days to close the pocket!-)
- But as stated, destroying the enemy units at Kalemyo will deplete the enemy armory further and give us a chance to trap or unhinge the allied left flank.
I'm also an opportunist; knock down one door and suddenly you find not one but two new doors behind the first one.
Ah yeah, I remembered the other way; that port repaired first.
We outnumber the enemy in Kalemyo 3-1 and are inflicting heavy causalties with our regular attacks.
Soon most of the enemy units will shatter. I have observed that Andy has moved his air force to Madras, we also spotted convoys unloading at Madras and troops moving east.
My assumption was that this would be reinforcements - and these would most likely move to Kalemyo via Imphal.
So I used this intel to intercept the enemy's rear in order to:
a) cut of rail supplies to Imphal and beyond
b) delay the arrival of enemy reinforcements
After careful considerations it was decided to launch 2 para units against Tezpur.
The paras achieved a 2-1 odds and only forts saved the base; annoying but we now have a potent force blocking the enemy for some turns.
This very turn an enemy unit was observed in the hext west of Tezpur.
If Andy, as I think he has, has moved his AF to Madras he will struggle to move enough ac towards Calcutta in order to interdict and bomb our annoying little force.
If our honored opponent wanted to capture Burma and make life miserable he managed to do so - for a while. Now I'm trying to return the favor! [;)]
But there were more interesting events today!
First we had numerous sub attacks; 2 enemy subs were reported hit by depth charges while our light cruiser Tama at Palmyra took a hit that didn't cause serious damage, a PB was also hit and
will most likely sink.
After all this activity enemy carriers appeared WEST of Palmyra!
The launched 2 strikes on our damaged CL and destroyers and sank the CL and a DD.
Our CAP over Palmyra claimed a dozen enemy ac.
This is very interesting; what does Andy want to achieve with this attack?

NEWSFLASH; Carrier battle!
Well, he got more than he bargained for [:D]
We had a full scale one sided carrier battle from 8 hexes with support from LBA today!
With the "Z" Flag flying from the top of the mast Nagumo led the Combined Fleet against the Allied Fleets.
I will divide the battle into different parts.
PART I: Prelude
In the hours before the battle the fleets manouvered and several sub-asw attacks took place.
2 Jap subs were sunk outright, one in Pearl Harbour trying to launch a midget - the midget is still at PH..
1 enemy sub was sunk, "sub breaking up sounds heard". Another sub was damaged.
Near Palmyra an AG was torpedoed and sunk, the enemy supplid another squadron of PT boats to the island one of which hit a mine.
A cargo ship was also sunk near Suva.

RE: NEWSFLASH; Carrier battle!
PART II: Morning Strikes
The first strike to go in was 9 Judys with a strong Zero escort from Palmyra meeting 119 enemy CAP fighters including Sea Hurricanes.
Half the Zeros failed to appear and the raid took heavy casualties and failed to break through the enemy CAP.
- If nothing else it disrupted the enemy CAP and weakened it before the KB strikes arrived.
The KB's first strike totalled 172 attack ac and 130 Zeros.
Attacking from 8 hexes mean that only 6 Jills carried torpedoes, all Kates carried bombs.
Only 98 enemy CAP fighters were left, a reduction of 21.
The Zero's handled most of the CAP and only ~10 bombers were shot down by fighters.
I was biting my nails as the bombers went in, the Luck "E" escapred...as usual but we set the WASP on fire and hit the Indomitable and Hornet with single bombs.
The Indiana took a torpedo while the South Dakota took 6 500kb bombs that put her on fire. 5 cruisers and a destroyer were also hit!

The attack was made in heavy cloud which reduced accuracy.
Then 5 Nells with a heavy LBA based Zero escort came in and swept away the rest of the enemy CAP and put a torpedo into the Indomitable.
A second KB strike then went in: 54 Zero's, 22 Kate's and 41 Judy's.
Only 4 enemy CAP fighters were present and were swept away.
The Indomitable took another 2 bomb hits (incredible tough ship), the Wasp took another bomb, the Hornet 3!!!! which lit her up like a christmas tree.
The Indiana took a further 6 bomb hits, the South Dakota 2 while the heavy Cruiser Chester also was hit.

The final morning attack saw 9 Nells score 3 hits; one against the CA Portland and 2 against the South Dakota which severly damaged her.
What a start, we have the enemy at our mercy and half the day is still left [&o]
We severly damaged 2 carriers, 2 battleships, sank a cruiser and damaged another 4 heavy cruisers and a destroyer.
In total I didn't observe more than 4 enemy carriers: Enterprise, Hornet, Wasp and Indomitable.
Don't think Andy brought his CVE fleet and both the Saratoga and Lexington were missing from the line of battle.

Yep, that was 10% calculation and 90% luck [8D]
PART III: Afternoon Strikes
In the afternoon weather got much worse [:(]
This severly reduced our ability to score hits from such a long range, but we went to work with Bushido Spirit [;)]
First 9 Nells went in with an escort of 39 Zeros; perfect!
The met only 27 CAP fighters and 5 Nells broke thorugh without scoring hits.
The KB then sent in its first strike: 75 Zeros and 163 bombers; they met a paltry 4 CAP fighters!
The results were not good but we planted 3 500kb bombs into the Indomitable, the Wasp was more or less finished by another 2 bomb hits, even the Enterprise took a solid hit.
Finally the CA Salt Lake City was hit. 7 hits from 163 bombers...arrgg.

The second afternoon striek from the KB consisted of 44 Zeros and 71 bombers.
The perform just as poorly and scored only 2 bomb hits, one on the Enterprise and one on the heavy cruiser Chester.

In reality we knocked out the Hornet, Wasp and Indomitable in the first day of battle leaving only the Lucky "E".
Our air losses:
57 Zeros (46 A2A, 12 Ops)
47 Judys (9 A2A, 39 flak, 8 Ops)
32 Kates (6 A2A, 16 flak, 10 Ops)
12 Nells (7 A2A, 5 flak)
Of these ca 30 Zeros, all 42 Judys and all Kates belonged to the KB.
By mistake 2 CVEs with 27 Zeros and 27 Judys were left behind (they didn't follow a TF as I though) - they're now our fresh reserves.
Enemy air losses (no major OPS losses indicating sunken carriers):
25 Wildcats (22 A2A, 3 Ops)
11 Sea Hurries (8 A2A, 3 Ops)
In total no more than 39 CAG losses (confirmed - yet).
Our total air strength including damaged ac went down with ca 200+ ac.
We still have 400 KB ac left and LBA has been reinforced but may now be left behind as the enemy retreats.
The big question is how Andy will react to this little disaster; will he split of his damaged ships and flee the battle
or try to rescue what he can?
Partly cloudy weather tomorrow as we move in for the kill; and we still got 90% of our torpedoes left!

Congratulations.
Obviously you need to charge the enemy. Go right for the hex they are in this turn to make sure you can hit them no matter which way they go. Your losses are minuscule and the US will only have Enterprise available to fly CAP and strikes tomorrow. All the rest of the carriers have most likely had their flight operations shutdown.
What I find fascinating is your flak loses. You have very high losses compared to what I had and I faced some rather intense flak. Before they do anything about flak, I think it might be useful to compare why your flak losses were so much higher compared to mine.

So, now, any plans to pay visit to Hawaii?

Well, I've said it before and I'll say it again people aren't accounting for the amount of a strike which is actually exposed to FlAK. PzB had most of his planes get through the CAP and be exposed to FlAK and so more of his planes were exposed to FlAK than is normally the case for IJNAF planes ( which normally get butchered by CAP on the way in ). So, he lost more to FlAK than is normal in this game.
I have got to say that when I see FlAK results in my games and I look at reports from battles I don't see that FlAK is hugely underpowered. Even in 1945 when I've been reading kamikaze reports recently it looks to me like about 2/3rds of kamis which made attack runs on ships survived the FlAK and either hit the ship or crashed into the ocean. About 1/3rd were downed by FlAK. I tend to see the same results in-game.
As to what to do.,.. PzB hardly needs our advice. He can delay Allied equality by 3 or 4 more months if he races into the USN CV TF's hex and butchers the cripples. In fact it might be worth racing a couple of hexes farther north in the hopes of catching Lady E if she has taken engine damage and is more slowed than he might think? Andy is unlikely to try to run the damaged CVs much east or west and even if he does they aren't going to be making more than 6 hexes so going 2 hexes more north won't risk missing them but might gain some significant additional spoil.
I would also suggest one slight tactical wrinkle. In similar situations I often run a CL-led DD TF directly towards the IJN CVs in order to effect a night-time intercept and torpedo attack. Run them four hexes towards the IJN and then 4 hexes back and they'll intercept at night and almost certainly end up in the same hex as the IJN CVs during the daytime too and intercept again. This will serve to eat ops points and disrupt and reduce flight ops. It is a cheap ( costs a CL and a few DDs ) way of maximising the chances of your CVs escaping and might even bag a CV with a few lucky torpedo hits.
Anyways, in a pursuit situation it makes sense for the IJN to offset one hex to the left or right in its pursuit to avoid falling foul of such a gambit. I don't think Andy is sneaky enough to try this gambit BUT it always pays to play as though your opponent is. It is a good habit to develop.

I don't quite understand why Andy risked his carriers here, with Lexington and Saratoga absent, and him having hung around Christimas island already several times -- he could not have done better to allow you engineer a trap.
Anyway, Nemo's arguments about AAA are quite interesting. Your flak losses were comparably brutal. Maybe other AARs had so much less dive bomber and torpedo planes get through the CAP that AAA was less involved, or maybe not. It has become such a complex game that so many details and factors may influence the results, that it is really hard to analyze, and everything seems to be possible -- but wasn't that exactly what the war was like? Who would have expected the Americans to survive Midway given outclassed fighters, outnumbered ships, and moment of surprise in the dark...
Indeed, advise seems hardly needed. I assume you send off the turn anyway. This is really a golden opportunity and I would now push forward all there is to catch as many of his ships before they reach pearl. BB TFs and CV's. And after, I would place a 3CV TF between Pearl and CONUSA and wait for the rest to make their way to continental yards...

Today wasn't the great follow up battle we had hoped for;
a) Weather was terrible
b) Surviving enemy TFs moved away at high speed.
Lots of sub activity led to the loss of 2 Jap subs; a US sub was also severly hit.
- The heavy cruiser Mogami took a hit, 20 flood - 18 major. Need to RTB.
- The damaged South Dakota was hit by 2 torpedoes; also engaged the sub on the surface and they exchanged hits [:'(]
The loss of 3 Kingfisher ac makes me believe the South Dakota sank later in the day.
We also got off a torpedo volley against the Lucky "E" - she is still a charmed ship and her TF moved at flank speed towards PH.
The heavily damaged enemy carriers managed to move 8!!! hexes towards Johnston Island and we only got of one strike against them but I think we're getting closer to sealing their fates:
63 Zeros, 13 Kats and 23 Judys; In stormy weather 7 hits were scored - not bad.
The Wasp took another 3 bomb hits, the Indomitable 1, the Indiana 1 and the CA Chester 2.

a) Weather was terrible
b) Surviving enemy TFs moved away at high speed.
Lots of sub activity led to the loss of 2 Jap subs; a US sub was also severly hit.
- The heavy cruiser Mogami took a hit, 20 flood - 18 major. Need to RTB.
- The damaged South Dakota was hit by 2 torpedoes; also engaged the sub on the surface and they exchanged hits [:'(]
The loss of 3 Kingfisher ac makes me believe the South Dakota sank later in the day.
We also got off a torpedo volley against the Lucky "E" - she is still a charmed ship and her TF moved at flank speed towards PH.
The heavily damaged enemy carriers managed to move 8!!! hexes towards Johnston Island and we only got of one strike against them but I think we're getting closer to sealing their fates:
63 Zeros, 13 Kats and 23 Judys; In stormy weather 7 hits were scored - not bad.
The Wasp took another 3 bomb hits, the Indomitable 1, the Indiana 1 and the CA Chester 2.

If we manage to sink all these ships I think we need to be content!
3 carriers, 2 battleships and a heavy cruiser sunk together with numerous other enemy capital ships damaged would be a great victory, especially if we don't suffer any major losses ourselves.
It will indeed take another year before the Allies can field a superior carrier force again.
