This is a Scenario 28 V04 (Da Big Babes) 1x1 PBM between myself, witpqs, and fellow forum member vicberg. I hope you will find it entertaining at least. Vic, alas, will have to wait until the end of the contest, but such is the fate of opponents in AAR's. This AAR will contain some information subject to opsec, loose lips sink ships!
Comments welcome. Now for the nitty gritty. Here are the settings and HR's, next post will report on turn 1.
- Roughly 1 turn per day perhaps more sometimes.
- Looking for reasonable opponent (great competition but no gaminess) for complete game.
- Ignore point totals - you decide your own victory conditions and me likewise. At the end maybe we both consider we 'won' or 'lost'!
========================================================
*** House Rules ***
General:
- No strategic bombing from China before 1944.
- No strategic bombing of China before 1944.
- Respect boundaries and pay PP's on units belonging to restricted commands as appropriate (pay full PP for all such units).
- No Escort or Sweep missions set to an altitude above 25,000ft. This includes all settings (for example CAP, LRCAP). CAP will always rise to meet other aircraft if appropriate anyway. This HR will become obsolete if a future patch includes the removal of altitude settings.
1st Turn Allied Restrictions:
- China, no restrictions (exempted from restrictions listed below). China excludes Hong Kong.
- No new TF's formed.
- Orders may be given to TF's already formed.
- Ground units everywhere (China excepted) may be given orders regarding Replacements (on/off), Operations Mode, Targets, etc. but no movement orders.
- Air units everywhere (China excepted) may be given orders regarding Replacements (accept/not), Pilots, and Mission Orders, etc. but no Transfers. Exception: with 1st turn surprise, Pearl Harbor aircraft mission orders should be left as-is as part of the surprise package, and Luzon based aircraft should only set search arcs (and other non-mission order settings).
Clarifications:
- Invasions are allowed at non-base/non-dot hexes.
I prefer few or no house rules, instead relying on 'no gaminess' and 'be realistic'.

While the diplomats slept...
Overnight in the Pacific, a war began. With no declaration of hostilities, submarine forces of the Imperial Japanese Navy penetrated miles of anti-submarine defenses in a little known base called Pearl Harbor. Most Navy men know it as paradise, but the men of the USS Pennsylvania there received the first salvo in this war. A salvo of torpedoes launched by what is believed to be a miniature submarine - as if they could get any more cramped. The battleship sustained modest damage.
With the cause of the explosion confirmed as hostile action, orders for vengeance went out by powerful wireless transmitters to all USN submarines at sea in the orient. That's right, both of them. In the pre-dawn hours S-36 made contact with the (now) enemy's sword point, the KB. Kido Butai - a concentration of fast aircraft carriers trained to a razor's edge in coordinated attacks. A Soryu class carrier passed S-36's path, and the path of 2 of the 4 torpedoes she fired. Two explosions racked the carrier and stayed her progress. S-36 was subjected to - nothing. ASW attacks missed the mark. But S-36 hit the mark again. After here sisters sailed on without here, S-36 found the hapless Soryu and had the same success. That's a .500 batting average, boys. Four fish in the right place and Soryu appeared to be gone. But Intel says otherwise. The hunt continues.
After sun up it became apparent this was a day that had been carefully planned. A declaration of war was delivered by the IJ ambassador in Washington, D.C. Halfway around the world all hell was breaking loose. US forces in the Philippines were hammered. Manila naval base and port are home to flaming wrecks, very few intact ships, and most of all newly created hazards to navigation. Imagine if Soryu's planes had been available to participate?
Enemy forces have landed on the west coast of Luzon, a scant 40 miles from Clark Airfield. Mac's boys will deal with 'em.
Air attacks hit ports in Hong Kong and Georgetown Malaya, with results ala Manila. Balikpapan saw a fierce sea battle off its shores with further blood shed by the USN, a two-sided battle that went mostly one way. The enemy is ashore in force in the whole Balikpapan area. Imminent loss of airfields and the presence of strong enemy carrier forces has made the whole of the Philippines and the Dutch East Indies unsafe for all civilian shipping and severely limits the options of the modest fleet of warships available to resist.

RE: 1941-12-07
As evening closed in on December 7th, 23 ships light Manila with fires still ablaze. What will tomorrow bring?
A restart!
We've had a misstep. Scenario 28 is sufficiently different from Scenario 1 that the opening strategy chosen by Vic needs to be handled differently, and also resulted in some troop loading issues for the Balikpapan & Samarinda occupation forces. All air support got left behind. A desperate attack toward the small KB supporting the Balikpapan area invasions by available (and viable) nearby Allied TF's hit unexpected jackpots. A covering IJN battleship force was engaged but mostly evaded. As it had also crushed a minelayer struggling to place mines in its path, the combat against a small Allied SCTF caused it to head back for rearming. The small KB was intercepted without result, but some transports were caught. More importantly, a TF of precious fleet oilers was found and devastated. Ironically, that TF had not even been spotted on 12/7 AFAIK. BTW, the stricken Soryu was not intercepted at sea but was hit numerous times by bombs from USN floatplanes in an attack escorted by USAAF fighters.
This AAR is finishing and is now open to vicberg. I'll start another as we recommence.
Here is the combat report from the 12/8 turn:

Hmmm? [&:] I didn't really understand why the game is being restarted.
RE: AE Confidential (vicberg welcome)
Maybe the Japanes player wants to start another scenario where he gets 15 IJN fleet carriers by late 1943.

I'm not running an AAR on my game with cap_and_gown, but I'll point out that on the first day of the Battle of Ponape a total of 42 IJN CV's (of various sizes) were sighted. On the second day, 32. I don't know how he juiced up that building program but it sure worked!

Growth Hormones.
RE: AE Confidential (vicberg welcome)
witpqs graciously allowed a restart because I hopelessly messed up the first turn and because I didn't realize just how different this scenario is after reviewing the second turn (with approx. 30% of all my squadrons grounded already) making the balikpan operation a death trap. Coupled with the carrier loss (which is part of the game, no worries there) and it wasn't going to be a very exciting or fun game to play or watch. Almost entirely defensive on my part.
The key of the operation is getting an air HQ into balikpan, and moving the BB tf (fast mover) from singora in front of it for defense. The air HQ enables betties/nells to dominate soejerba, batvia and pretty much the rest of the DEI right from turn 3. With a couple more sctfs in support, if the base can hold until turn 5 (and it can be touch and go against an aggressive player), the KB arrives to solidify the area. However, I forgot to load the HQ (which removes the true power of the nells/betties) and screwed up the move of the BB tf so it wasn't in position to defend balikpan and then realized just how severe the air support reduction is, which would have left a good portion of the betties/nells grounded anyway. So with force z moving up the straights and nearly enough in sea or air assets (without torpedoes) to defend, it would have been a short and pretty boring game for both of us.

RE: AE Confidential (vicberg welcome)
An S boat hit a Jap CV on Dec 7 with four torps and they exploded! [X(]
Here is what I would do. I would ask for a game pause...then I would go withdraw all my retirement money and head directly to Las Vegas.

LOL...witpqs or me? It's been that type of year already for me. 2 year old has leukemia (diagnosed in april)...with 4000 children age 10 and under getting it a year NATIONWIDE, yes I should go to the lottery. I'd have a better chance.
BTW...his sub did get 8 fish in the water. 50% hit. Second round or 4 was because good old Nagumo decided to bail on the striken carrier to accomplish his mission (hmmm) and only one DD escort behind...
