HQ unit question

Post by Wolfleader »

What does the HQ unit do? I'm wondering because after playing a few missions in campaign I traded my HQ unit for an Elephant tank destroyer and I'm wondering if that was such a good idea.

What I've observed:

1.) It's comparable (though not as good as) an FO for calling in artillery, with regards to delay times.

2.) If it's in contact, it will try to rally a unit if all other efforts (eg, Squad leader, Platoon leader, Company leader) fail.

3.) It's a smallish unit, thus vulnerable to sustained fire.

4.) It tends to have very little firepower (these guys are humping radios, codebooks, maps, etc., and have little room for bazookas).

5.) It is mobile (as opposed to, say, trading it in for a fortress... which can be VERY fun in some cases XD... until you get assaulted).

One thing is for sure, you do not want to lose the A0 unit. If you lose that unit, your whole force morale suffers, IIRC. You may see a note that says "US force morale broken" at the bottom of the screen if you have done enough damage to the US force and killed its A0. Making your A0 vulnerable to one-shot-one-kill (as in making it an AFV) is not something to do lightly. You may want to check that unit's leadership abilities (i.e. arty, inf, armor ratings). If your A0 started as an infantry unit, it had a much higher infantry command rating, than armor rating. Swiching to an armored A0 may have just given you a very bad armor leader.

When I spot them I will expend a lot of resources to kill them. I've never lost my own A0 unit so I can't say for certain that there is an immediate consequence when this happens. But one of my PBEM games ended rather abruptly after I killed the A0.

I would sure like an expert opinion on what actually happens when you lose your A0.

CP V ELEPHANT

IF you have a CP in a force, especially a low morale or backs to the wall force you will find that you forces will absorb quite a bit more than would otherwise be expected. The longer it stays hidden from the enemy the better, no movement the better, the better the defensive terraian the harder it will be to dislodge and erradicate. In my current game I have a supprting Belgian force for the BEF forces which effectively denied maneurver space for 10 turns[of 22 ]and the cp hidden in rocks took a real good investment of german manpower time and material and cost to dislodge and then eradicate

I know a few things about your A0 unit. It will give all units within 5 hexes of it an additional rally at the end of the turn. It will give you an additional rally attempt if you squad and company leaders fail their rally roles (and your HQ is withing 2 hexes of that unit) and it is the unit that your OB artillary needs to be in contact with to be able to call in OB artillary. Now that said if you lose your A0 HQ a few things happen. There is a ratio like if you lose more than half your force and your A0 fails his/her rally check force moral will break. If force moral breaks, all units in your command will have a continuous deteriation of moral (ie they will get automatic suppretion) each round until your HQ make the rally check. Now if you do not have an HQ you will automatically get "force moral brooken" and you will never get it back. (Unless you purchased an additional HQ tent) Now if force moral breaks and your opponent has all of the victory hexes the game ends. Bad ju-ju. And if your opponent does not have all the VH all he has to do is run a motor cycle unit over them on his turn and the game ends. Also if you HQ is gone it is almost imposible to get into contact with OB artillary. Now if you have a FO you still can get into contact, but it is more difficult.

Lastly it is worth 220 points that is a lot. So try not to lose it.

Hope this was helpful. There is a lot of info in the manual on the HQ and other insightful things. I would recommend printing it out and reading it. It will improve you game.

There is no where that I know of where you can purchase a HQ. If you trade if for something I beleive you are stuck. Can't get it back. Kind of strange. Unless someone else knows where you can purchase one. I have never seen it myself.

Roger that. I've changed mine into a coastal fortress before... that was fun! That battle didn't take long at all. Then I switched it back to an HQ for the next battle. Expensive? Yes. Fun? Hell yes!
