The Japanese finally eject some of my troops from Sinyang. There's a lot more where they came from!

Multiple Zero sweeps on Diamond Harbour, followed by port strikes. Not sure why. Perhaps I need to move some fighters around.

Conducted battleship bombardment practice against the Japanese on Abemama. I believe the Idaho got the highest score.

Nothing happening.

Preparing for a reinforcement convoy to Tulagi, with a side visit to Lunga Point to drop off enough engineers to build it up.

In China, he's been moving in the north past Sian. I can cut him off around Ichang. I should probably take advantage of his overextension.

February 3/4 1942

Singapore falls.

A damaged Japanese submarine sneaks into Noumea Harbour and puts two torpedoes into the Enterprise.

Other Japanese victories include: Beaufort and Kendari.

Landing at Bandjermasin.

KB sends 300 aircraft to attack Bandjermasin.

That is one thing that would be on my wish list for a future patch: non-midget subs on port raids either blocked or dramatically altered

Didn't the U-47 succesfully attack in Scapa Flow? If you were talking about Sydney or Pearl Harbor I would probably agree with you but Noumea is a small port. Maybe a game adjustment by port size?

Scapa Flow is big! and has multiple sounds accessing the ocean. Not your usual harbour. More like Kure, Truk, or San Francisco Bay.

Wau recaptured from the Japanese.

Japanese ships spotted near Milne Bay. These may be the extraction convoy for the Japanese division that landed there. A submarine visit to the harbour found the base abandoned. The Australian troops that were forced out are infiltrating back.

Japanese convoy spotted near Ndeni. I'm inclined to release the carriers to investigate.

Japanese destroyers encountered south of Truk.

First Marine Division arrives on the East Coast.

Japan captures Kungchang. Since I have forces blocking all the routes there, I wonder how long the offensive spearhead will last without resupply.

My opponent complained about the ineffectiveness of his ASW forces (50 aircraft and 20 ships) at Truk.

Nothing significant happened. Fast transport convoy approaches Lunga with resupply. Meanwhile heavier convoys load at Noumea to reinforce Tulagi and Lunga. Australian soldiers marching through the jungles approach Milne Bay and Buna overland. Daily heavy bomber raids against Port Moresby. Air evacuation of retreating forces in Burma continues. Heavy garrisons established in offensive bases along the Indo-Burmese border. Only North China is a worry.

Nothing significant happened. Lunga resupply uneventful. Interceptors now based in Port Moresby. I'll need to sweep the place.

Nothing significant happening. Lunga reinforcements approach Betty range from Rabaul, and three carriers with extra fighters join up to provide cover. No sign of Japanese SAG or CVTF response. Tulagi reinforcement convoy about a week behind. If I can get these landed, I can begin to eat at the Japanese air control based on Rabaul. Port Moresby garrison descends on Buna, and Milne Bay garrison begins probes of the Japanese base there. It appears the Japanese division that landed at Milne Bay was evacuated, and the base is open.

*Nothing at all* sunk. Two damaged carriers and one badly damaged. I'll anchor the badly damaged carrier (Lexington) and a destroyer at Tulagi as bait, pull out the amphibious TF, send the damaged carriers towards Townsville with a couple of damaged cruisers, organise some SAGs and close with the KB--it ended up 5 hexes from my TFs. I have a VP squadron with coverage of the area--I'll shift it to night ops and reinforce it, and bring up four other VP squadrons to cover the holes in my daytime search coverage. I'll also bring up a whole bunch of fighter and medium bomber squadrons I have in the area.

Had a weird bug strike--five convoys loading/unloading at various places in the area were ordered to stop port operations and head out to various rear area destinations. They proceeded to cancel their new orders and destinations and return to what they were doing before, converting a f**k up into a major disaster. I posted saves and mmichael sent me the orders file unlocked, so I could see what the TFs were doing. I corrected their orders and sent it on to my opponent. That replay was even more impressive--the convoys pulled out this time, including the one at Efate, which I didn't touch. On the other hand, the I-3 sank all the American carriers and some other ships as they steamed towards Townsville, so it ended American naval operations in the South Pacific.

My letter to my opponent is as follows:

"[font="calibri"]I happen to know what the US Government would have done at that point—gone on the strategic defensive. Australia, the UK, and China would have started armistice negotiations. In terms of the Japanese strategic goals, you’ve won."

So the War Plan Orange scenario appears to favour Japan. What Yamamoto did for Japan was convert a decent chance to win a limited war into a strategic disaster.
