OT Are There Any Decent HDTVs Under $600?

Post by KG Erwin »

This is a serious question. I'm looking at a Panasonic plasma 42" model, which I've found in the $600-$650 range. All of the reviews I've read are good. Yes, I'm thinking ahead to tax refund season 2011.

Honestly, I don't need a megascreen size, and I really can't afford one of the $1000+ models.

If anyone is curious, this is the model # I'm eyeing: TC-P42S2.

42" Samsung 720p Plasma

$499.99

$29.99 shipping
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6889102331

That's the lowest priced 42" Plasma Newegg has and I'd guarantee because it's a model they're phasing out. All companies seem to make a new model every month, so if you look around you'll find relatively low prices in places. You gotta jump on them, though, because those go quick.

I bought a 37" Samsung 1080p LCD a couple months ago from Newegg. IIRC for around $680 and free shipping. Obviously another markdown older model of limited quantities. Haven't had any issues, was delivered straight into my living room after their contracted delivery guys called and asked when I'd be home for delivery. Of course, that model and another one I was considering are both gone now. ;)

Thanks, Nefarious Koel. I'll be shopping around for the next few months, as the whole family's been complaining about our old Zenith. Besides, our cable is switching to HDTV format in January.

Hmm -- the Panasonic model I've been checking lists @ $800 at Newegg. I found the same one at $600 from Walmart.

Prices are very good now a days.
My first HDTV cost 7K back in 2003 and my 2nd cost 2.5K back in 2007.

You will enjoy it.[:)][:)][:)]

KG, I would encourage you to pull the trigger. I've got a 42" Panasonic Plasma(1080p) from 2007, and I love it. I paid $1800 for mine.

Buy it. Watch it. Love it.

Plasma rocks!

I got mine at Wal-Mart last Christmas season. They usually have some crazy good deals around this time.

Well I got Samsung LED/LCD and it's great. I do have to admit though that Plasma was tempting as the once highest priced format for the flat screens is now the lowest priced by quite a bit. The prices on the plasmas were extremely tempting. I sort of assumed that Plasma is losing the format war and is being offered at the lower prices in order to compete with the more popular LED LCD units.

I suggest you view them all, as the Plasma look is quite different and you should pick the format that looks best to you. There is a good chance if you have several people taking a test view for best picture, some will pick plasma and others LED or LCD (note LED units are also LCD, just the backlight is different by using LED for that) The LED units are the super thin models.

Plasma is a energy hog, but If you have a bright room you will need it.

use your eyes, also bring a disc so that you can test drive it.
