STRATEGIC BOMBING OF JAPAN

Post by racndoc »

8/1-8/2/44

CENTPAC: AIR OPERATIONS OVER JAPAN

USAAF fighters and heavy bombers work over Tokyo and USN CVEs and USAAF heavies work over Yokohama. When its all over Tokyo airfields are 64% damaged and Yokohama airfields are 100% damaged. Overall, Japan loses nearly 500 planes vs Allied losses of about 150 AC. Even better...
whereas Japan had some 1000 AC stacked at Tokyo and Yokohama only 2 turns ago.....now there are less than 30 AC total. StoneAge must have railroaded most of the damaged AC out of the area.

Over 350 Japanese AC were destroyed on the ground. Unfortunately, the Allies lost the battle in A2A combat.....95 Allied AC were lost vs 51 Japanese. The culprits here are the CVE FM-2(82 lost) and FM-1(23 lost) Wildcats......they are simple outclassed and obsolete against late war Japanese AC. The CVEs need to go back to port now to rebuild their fighter squadrons.....more than a few will be upgraded to Hellcats.

The P-47D25s on the otherhand performed spectacularly......some 60-75 were engaged in combat and not one was lost.

USAAF fighters and B-24s based at Tanegashima and Amami Oshima will hit Tokyo airfields again next turn to completely shut them down.

Out of several kamakaze attacks last turn a single kamikaze gets thru and hits CVE Makin Island:

SS Flier is hit by 12 DCs from E boats off Wakkanai.

SS RO-100 attacks CVE TF at Tanegashima and is hit byb 13 DCs and is sunk.

STRATEGIC BOMBING OF JAPAN

B-24s based at Tanegashima and Amami Oshima hammer Tokyo airifelds and close it with 100% damage.

At Tinian, General Curtis LeMay is disappointed with the high altitude attacks on Japan. The USAAF brass cannot figure out why bombing accuracy is so poor for the penultimate designed high altitude heavy bomber of the war......extremely high winds of over 150 miles per hour are throwing off the accuracy of the Norden bombsight and no one yet knows of the physics of the "jet stream". With his own neck on the line.....and the future of Hap Arnold's most visible strategic bomber program on the line......General Curtis LeMay makes the the most important command decision of his life. General LeMay orders the B-29 bomber groups to jettison their remotely controlled sighting equipment and all defensive anti aircraft guns save for the tail position. The powerful Wright R-3350 engines struggle to put the B-29 into high altitude approaches so LeMay orders the bombers to night attack at 6000 feet:

Night Air attack on Yokohama/Yokosuka , at 113,61

Weather in hex: Heavy cloud

Allied aircraft
B-29-1 Superfort x 108

Allied aircraft losses
B-29-1 Superfort: 12 damaged

Manpower hits 388
Fires 133110

Night Air attack on Yokohama/Yokosuka , at 113,61

Weather in hex: Partial cloud

Allied aircraft
B-29-1 Superfort x 99

Allied aircraft losses
B-29-1 Superfort: 11 damaged

Manpower hits 265
Fires 159094

Night Air attack on Yokohama/Yokosuka , at 113,61

Weather in hex: Partial cloud

Allied aircraft
B-29-1 Superfort x 7

Allied aircraft losses
B-29-1 Superfort: 1 damaged

Manpower hits 30
Fires 174044

The B-29s increase Japan's strategic damage losses to 7630.....less than 400 points over 2 days. In additon, the B-29s suffer 5% losses each day for a total of 11 B-29s lost to ops over 2 days....thats 11% of the AC involved.....thats with no defensive fighters and minimal AA.

With over 4 months of training 150 B-29s and then staging them from Aden and and east coast USA to Tinian and _ALSO_ 6 daytime attacks on heavily defended Osaka.....we see a total of 13 B-29s are lost. And then here 99 B-29s conduct 2 night attacks with no CAP and minimal flak and they suffer 11% casualties to ops. I can only imagine staging 400 plane raids with the B-29s at night and losing 40 AC over 2 days with little to no opposition. The Allies get only 18 B-29-1s per month so the losses I suffered unopposed are unsustainable.

The way it appears that WitP AE is designed is that night ops for B-29s creates horrific losses to ops.....nothing you can do about it and their is no relationship to AA or night fighters. This is similar to what I have experienced with the hapless transport AC in my rear areas that for over 2/3rds of the war suffered the heaviest losses of all my AC .....all to ops....only for the crime of flying close to their max range. Here....with the B-29s flying vast distances compare to all other Allied AC....their OP losses are huge and completely unsustainable. So the RL tactic of night bombing at 6000' doesnt work in AE....I suffer almost as many losses in 2 nights(11) as I did over 4 months(13) with training, staging and 6 then days of bombing with over 150 B-29s against CAP and AA.

I think that the B-29 model here is broken but I will continue to test it.

RE: STRATEGIC BOMBING OF JAPAN

Post by janh »

Is it the B-29 model, or do night operations simply lead to more accidents and higher OPS losses?  Could be realistic, or overestimated, or just a statistical artifact in this case, and you might be fighting another factor?
How was the bombing campaign over Japan performed historically?  Huge daylight raids, every day, every n-th day, small night raids?

RE: STRATEGIC BOMBING OF JAPAN

Post by vaned74 »

Some interesting B29 data...straight from the AAF archives.

Don't know how this compares to your game, but I am interested in #sorties/typical experienced by historical USAAF; curious if perhaps it is possible to tell if most ops losses happen on 2nd day from 2 day turns or not? In general it appears from reading B29 mission logs that it was usually one flight and then 5-8 days before the same plane would fly again (and perhaps longer between sorties per crew).

RE: STRATEGIC BOMBING OF JAPAN

Post by racndoc »

janh....I think that the heavy B-29 losses are due to flying at night......I have no other explanation for it other than statistical annomaly. Like I said in my previous post.....I have no problem losing 13 planes from 4 months of heavy training, staging half way across the world....and then 6 days of continuous daytime bombing against a heavily defended target. I do have a problem with losing 11 planes(11%)in 2 nights of bombing aginst a virtually undefended target. I would like to test this further but I really cant afford the losses.

vaned74....sorry Im working on this instead of the 1st turn of our new game....LOL. Thanx for posting the historical info. Six sorties a month seems about right. With 2 day turns Im doing back to back sorties and then standing down for about 10 days .....so it works out to about 6 sorties per month in game.

The main supply routes for the Allies in the Pacific extend from the US west coast through the Marshalls to Guam, Tinian and Saipan. From there, the transports are broken up into smaller convoys and then sent to the frontline bases at Amami Oshima, Tanegashima and Nago and Naha on Okinawa. StoneAge sent a DD flotilla into the waters north of the Marianas in an effort to raid these convoys. A Dutch cruiser TF based at Saipan is sent to intercept the IJN DDs and a fierce night action takes place:

The intel screen shows that 5 IJN DDs were sunk vs 1 USN DD.

The Essex class CVs continue to complete their repairs and upgrades at Naha Okinawa. The fast carriers should be ready to put out to sea in 1 or 2 turns. The CVEs continue to rebuild their decimated air groups at tanegashima. I converted about 60% of the CVEs fighter ggroups from Wildcats to hellcats so hopefully they do better in A2A combat next time around.

StoneAge must have a lot of engineers at Tokyo as the airfields there appear to be 100% repaired 2 days after the bombing stops. StoneAge also staged in another 150 AC to Tokyo. I wanted to rest my USAAF fighters and B-24s for the next city bombing offensive but I need to suppress the Tokyo airfield and attrtion the Japanese air force before the strategic bombing attacks resume ......so all the fighters and 4Es based at Tanegashima and Amami Oshima are ordered to bomb Tokyo airfields next turn.

I need to say no more!

This is why you let Japan run its econnomy like it wants OR you will have US bases 250 miles from Hiroshima by mid 1944!!!

StoneAge sends repeated sweeps and a kamiaze attack against Allied CVEs at Tanegashima.......with the upgrade pf 60% of the CVEs from Wildcats to Hellcats the Japanese fighters are decimated.

Meanwhile, USAAF fighters and heavy bombers based at Tanegashima and Amami Oshima hammer Jap CAP over Tokyo and its airfields......by the end of the turn the airfields at Tokyo suffer 73% damage. Japan loses another 68 AC today vs 28 Alied. In A2A, Japan loses 46 AC to 19 Allied AC.
The fighters and heavy bombers on Amami Oshima and Tanegashima will now be rested for the resumption of the strategic bombing offensive.

IJN surface raiders north of the Marianas wander a bit to close to US naval bombers on Saipan:

Afternoon Air attack on TF, near Agrihan at 111,83

Weather in hex: Light cloud

Raid spotted at 30 NM, estimated altitude 16,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 14 minutes

Allied aircraft
F6F-3 Hellcat x 18
TBF-1 Avenger x 12

No Allied losses

Japanese Ships
APD T-6, Bomb hits 2, heavy fires
APD T-1, Bomb hits 3, heavy fires, heavy damage

Aircraft Attacking:
4 x TBF-1 Avenger bombing from 4000 feet *
Naval Attack: 2 x 500 lb GP Bomb
8 x TBF-1 Avenger bombing from 3000 feet *
Naval Attack: 2 x 500 lb GP Bomb

Heavy smoke from fires obscuring APD T-1

The USN Essex carriers will complete repairs and upgrades next turn and then will be able to resume offensive air ops over Japan.

Ive attached a screenshot of Japan this turn....there appears to be multiple IJN convoys off Yokohama and Tokyo......guess StoneAge wanted to sneak in some more fuel and resources while the Allied carriers were away. The CVEs are ordered to shove off from Tanegashima this turn and hit the IJN shipping off the coast and in port at Tokyo.

Next turn, the Allied CVEs off Japan will concentrate on Japanese CAP and airfields at Yokohama and Tokyo....some 20 CVEs will go after each target with a few P-38Ls flying sweeps from Tanegashima. I hope to neutralize Japanese air in that area so strategic bombing can resume when the weather clears.

Here is a screenie of ship losses last turn.....Japan lost 7 E boats.

The USN fleet carriers complete repairs and upgrades at Naha Okinawa and shove off to join the CVEs off the Japanese coast.

The poor weather grounded all my naval bombers on the 1st day and then I made a mistake in giving orders to the divebombers that prevented them from attacking on the 2nd day. Still.....we achieved a 973,000 level fire and all the carrier bombers are ready to go next turn with lots of carrier ops. The weather for next turn over Tokyo is "heavy overcast" which is a darn sight better than heavy storms.......and with a 300,000 plus fire all the pilots have to do in the overcast is drop their ordnance over the fires.

The strategic bombing attack this turn inflicted a record 1400 points of damage......I have to think that the way AE works is that the larger the target the greater the # of strategic damage points inflicted. Here is a screenie of the damage at Tokyo:

SIX DAYS OVER TOKYO

Post by racndoc »

nicwb......some of these surviving IJN DD sailors will be able to tell some tall tales at the end of the war....they've repeatedly engaged and defeated far superior Allied surface TFs with BBs, CAs and CLs.......but eventually the law of averages catches up with you.

8/16-8/17/44

SUBS

SS Seadog is hit by 9 DCs from IJN ASW TF off Shanghai.

SS Herring is hit by 17 DCs from E boats near Wakkanai.

SS Searaven is hit by 38 DCs from E boats and sinks near Wakkanai.

Now I know how German U-boat skippers felt during mid 1944. Obviously the IJN E boats are by far the best anti-sub platform of the war for either side..... strange that I never heard of them until I played AE.

The Allied strategic bombing of Tokyo creates the largest fire of the war so far......1.52 million....still no confirmation of a firestorm. However, manpower and HI damage really ramped up this turn....check out the screenshot at the end of this post. The bombers add on another 1100 strategic loss ponits to Japan for a total of 10,392......nearly 14% of the total of Allied victory points.

This strategic bombing doesnt come cheap however......StoneAge evidently has stacked a lot of AA at Tokyo....I would too if I was playing as Japan. The Allies lose 80 AC to flak and another 53 to ops. Im starting to see a major difference in the capabilities and operations of the B-24s and the B-29s. Even though I have some 800 B-24s/Liberators spread over 4 seperate airfields over 500 miles apart, they still conduct more cohesive attacks than the 200 B-29s based on a single island at Tinian. The B-24s are much more robust and are able to sustain a much higher tempo of flight ops. The B-29s are also suffering a higher percentage loss rate to ops. All of these isuues....flight coodination, operational tempo and operational losses I think can be attributed to the much longer distances that the B-29 flies. Just the way AE models op losses for long distance flying.....for most of the war my heaviest losses by plane type were unopposed transport AC flying in the back waters of China/India..... I think that the performance B-29 is doomed regardless of presence of Japanese CAP or AA.

The weather looks decent for tomorrow.....overcast over Tokyo....so the bombers will come in again for one more turn and then I will watch the resultant fires burn for a few days.

BOMBS OVER TOKYO

The weather was bad on the 1st day of the turn and nothing flew save the B-29s from Tinian. Everyone flew on the 2nd day and we inflicted another 1700 strategic loss points on Japan for a total of 12,032 strategic loss points. After 6 days of combat all the 4Es will stand down and the CVEs will return to Tanegashima while the fleet carriers will return to Naha Okinawa.

Here is a screenie of the current damage in Tokyo:

STRATEGIC BOMBING OF JAPAN

After 6 days of continuous firebombing of Tokyo the Allied bombers are stood down. The CVEs return to port at Tanegashima and the CVs return to port in Okinawa. All of the carriers need to replace their substantial aircraft and flight crew losses. The overall quality of DB and TB pilots continues to deteriorate over time due to the heavy attrition over Japan. I would have to imagine the the quality of the Japanese pilots is dropping also.

After 6 consecutive days of city bombing about 60% of the B-24s/Liberators are available for flight ops while less than 1/3rd of the B-29s are available.

The fires continue to burn at Tokyo 2 days after the bombing is halted. Another 1200 strategic loss points are inflicted for a total of 13,268 strategic loss points. Manpower at Tokyo is now 90(73) while HI is 1405(1326).

Adm Spruance - what gives ? the entry for 8/13 had USS Whale going down to a depth charge attack off Wakkanai after being clobbered by 21 depth charges. But the entry for 8/25 have the Whale alive, well and kicking (literally - kicking E18 off Wakkanai)

nicwb....good point....often times the game gives you messages about ships sinking but with the wrong ship ID. I went back and checked ans apparently it was SS Bang that sank on 8/13/44. The SS Whale is still alive and dishing out death from below.

Once gain, the 270 B-29s come in to target extremely fragmented....even with the best bomber squadron and Air HQ leaders available..... due no doubt to the extreme range....35 hexes. After 2 days of bombing ops, 193 of 273 B-29s are available for ops next turn.....or about 70%. At Tanegashima, 365 out of 399 fighters and B-24s/Liberators are available for ops next turn or about 90%.

The weather remains decent over Osaka and the stratgeic bombing will continue next turn.

BOMB DAMAGE ASSESSMENT

The Allied strategic bombers managed to ignite a 1.5 million level fire but still no confirmation of a firestorm. Osaka MP was reduced from 74(65) to 61(78). However, ONLY 72 strategic loss points were inflicted for a total of 13,792 strategic loss points..... thats about 1/10th of the average strategic point losses we seem to have been inflicting per turn of strategic bombing.

HI damage was UNCHANGED from the day before at 1057(894) as was LI damage at 1203(698). This was the 1st time in the war that I had revisited a city that had been hit hard before by strategic bombers.....and the HI and LI somehow look much more resistant now to fires and bomb damage. We will hit Osaka hard again next turn and see if that changes.

RE: STRATEGIC BOMBING OF JAPAN

Post by vaned74 »

Hey there Bill - one of the things I am noticing in testing some strat bombing vs Japan is to watch the plane damage numbers vs ops loss. It appears that, possibly, as plane damage & fatigue build up the % of ops losses seem to increase. These appears to be perhaps even more correlated than pilot fatigue as an indicator of ops losses. Note, the planes, despite being in a high fatigue/damage state, will still show as operational.

Also, though it requires tons (and I means tons) of micromanagement, one can basically select the pilots for missions - taking high fatigue pilots and popping them into reserve status within the group (not general reserve). This may reduce ops losses and even increase bombing accuracy. It is really really hard to decipher how it all plays together b/c there are so many variables at work at the same time.

Just some observations.
