RE: NEWSFLASH; Carrier battle!
More of the same; only air action in Burma today.
With most of our bomber units upgraded to the Helen II we manage to coordinate our attacks quite well.
Today 96 Tojo's swept Kalemyo before the main strike with 138 Helens and 136 fighters appeared.
- Not easy to stop such a raid. Good weather alloed some hits in the base as well, suppressing fort construction.
Our Army needed another rest, shock attacks are quite disruptive.

RE: NEWSFLASH; Carrier battle!
Another deliberate attack achieves a 1-1 odds.
It's odd; if we manage a good AV the enemy does the same, it's just about having the required luck to have a perfect day
when the enemy has a bad one.
The Junyo has arrived in the Home Islands performing repairs and upgrade at the same time.
She was a lucky ship in the previous game as well.
The KB continues to take on Jill replacements.
Conversion to the Zero A6M5 is slightly delayed as the main Zero A6M2 factory don't want to convert.
The base has plenty supply so I'm at a loss why this happens 6 days into April.
In the rear areas airplanes like Sonia, Ann, Mary etc are slowly upgraded to Lily, Sallys and Helen Is.
I then train these pilots first in the ASW role, then in the low level naval bombing role and finally ground attack.
- This will provide us with a trained reserve later in the war.

Manually convert the plane factory. You don't need to wait for the auto-upgrade. A manual conversion along the upgrade path will not damage the factories, same as for R&D factories.

Oh no, I've learned; the KB will not be squandered - all we need to do is to stay clear of major enemy LBA concentrations.
Andy has hardly more than a couple of carriers operational plust a waddle of CVEs, hardly a threat to the KB.
you shouldn´t underestimate the CVEs! If Andy puts them with his fleet this can give him more fighters than all the KB fields. The only thing about CVEs is their "slow" speed, I never understood why people really bother about speed because 99.9 out of 100 moves happen at normal speed anyway and if you have to do a full speed run you can do that with the CVs alone and the CVEs will catch up one turn later. Put 15 CVEs with the fleet carriers and you end up with something like 300-400 Hellcats more (depending on using VR squadrons as combat squadrons or not - again, I wouldn´t bother using them as VR but rather as fleet Cap).

The speed is not important when just tooling around the Pacific. What matters is what happens when you get into battle. At that point their slow speed makes them sitting ducks for every Tomiko, Dicko, and Harriko-san with a bomb. You get into a carrier duel and they are going to die, regardless of how much CAP they can add. And at that point, all that CAP will be gone.
RE: NEWSFLASH; Carrier battle!
They will only die if the enemy bombers get through the CAP relatively unscathed.
I'll take 400 additional fighters in vulnerable CVEs over no additional fighters ANY day.

Well, that's that settled then.
Well, that's that settled then.
NEWSFLASH; Queen Mary sunk!
Hm, I'm afraid my A6M2 factories doesn't have an upgrade path to the A6M5 because they do become damaged when I try to change them.
That are valid points!
- Andy do use his CVE's vigorously and they _do die_ in large numbers.
However, by 4/43 the Allies don't have a huge number of them. I've sunk 1 leaving 7-8?
Hellcats are still not available to all these ships so I do feel rather confident.
I'll take the KB into battle against 2 fleet carriers and 7-8 CVE's any time; would be a good opportunity to defeat an inferior enemy.
Well Jahn, you dreamed about what happened if we intercepted an huge convoy with a proper force of heavy cruisers.
Now you can see for yourself [:)] 2 of our best heavy cruisers and 4 destroyers fired up all their ammo in such a battle today.
- and guess what...the prize target in the convoy was nothing else but the majestic Cunard-White Star Liner Queen Mary! [X(]
We dealt a heavy morale blow to the British Empire today!

God Save the Queen
The Queen Mary is given a tonnage of 46000 tons in game but on this page she is listed as 80000 tons?
http://www.atlanticliners.com/rms_queen_mary_home.htm
It's also quite disturbing to see how much ammo is required to sink a few unarmored ships; torpedoes were wasted from 16000 yards and hundreds of shells
were pumped into blazing hulks while a mere dozen shells would suffice. When the warships closed to 2000 yards most torpedoes were already spent... [8|]

RE: NEWSFLASH; Queen Mary sunk!
Andy keeps doing things like this.... Very suboptimal ship mix.
Nevermind the xAKs and xAPs with a 12 to 14 knot speed just what is the AO Tan doing in a convoy with the Queen Mary? He obviously just dumps all ships available into a convoy without ever thinking to optimise his convoys be grouping ships of similar endurance and speed together.
Really this is another example of very sloppy play where he doesn't bother to optimise his forces.... Of course not everyone would be in position to punish such sloppiness so kudos to you PzB. Really he only got what he deserved though... P.s I agree re: the torpedo usage code vs merchies.

Well, that's that settled then.

RE: NEWSFLASH; Queen Mary sunk!
It's been explained many times before. Tonnage is not loaded displacement.ORIGINAL: PzB

But perhaps it bears repeating. Tonnage is not loaded displacement. Tonnage is a calculated value that defines what ports a ship can dock at and what size yards are required to fix it. Tonnage is not loaded displacement. Tonnage for non-warship types has a well defined mathematical correspondance to ship size and Light Ship Tonnage. Tonnage is not loaded displacement.

RE: NEWSFLASH; Queen Mary sunk!
Hmm. I think I read somewhere that tonnage is not loaded displacement.
RE: NEWSFLASH; Queen Mary sunk!
Only one word... wow! That was once more a good blend of excellent strategical play with a good shot of luck, which was partially "donated" by a little careless Andy. Queen Lizzy down means there must be quite a party at the Imperial Navy headquarters in Tokyo! Congrats!
Nemo is quite right, Andy should be more careful with organizing his convoy, and hopefully from now on will direct more capital ships including BBs to rearward and LOC security -- if so, you might bind many times your raider forces with such operations, which is almost as good as defeating them on the front line! If not, keep hunting... Long term you might loose a raider TF with that, but with such successes already on your list, they might already be amortized...

RE: NEWSFLASH; Queen Mary sunk!
Ah yes, I thought briefly about that; a bit confused when they refer to tonnage and displacement weight.
Indeed; Andy should not have sent fast and slow ships together in a straight line out of Perth.
It is possible that he wanted to get the ships out of Dodge asap, but even a slight detour to the south would have been enough.
He must be very low on escorts, 3-4 destoyers would have saved lots of ships today.
We'll see Janh, not sure he will change his ways and divert capital ships to guard his convoys.
This may provide us with further openings though!
This turn our surface ships engaged 2! enemy convoys..but being low on ammo they didn't even want to engage [:o]
Just a dozen shells, even 25mm shells, would have sufficed to sink a shedload of ships.
- A sub picked of a single ship though.
Continued heavy air attacks in Burma.
Let's give Kalemyo all we got, constantly! Doesn't seem like Andy can cause us much harm doing so.

RE: NEWSFLASH; Queen Mary sunk!
Heavy air battles over Burma again!
We're winning the A2A battles with a 2-1 and 3-1 ratios and very few pilots are killed.
Another deliberate attack goes in with much the same results as before.
Another Bde has reinforced the enemy but we're fighting smaller enemy LCU's with larger divisions and have an edge there.
Losses are more encouraging; 1-2 despite a 1-2 odds may indicate that the enemy's defenses are hurting.
Another regiment joined our forces today; in total I can deploy another division, 2 more regiments a tank bde and 2 tank regiments.
The reduced units will again rotate back to Rangoon. We got 6 more weeks of campaigning so let's remove as many commonwealth squads as possible.
- May take them a long time to replace them.

- Dwight D. Eisenhower
RE: NEWSFLASH; Queen Mary sunk!
Great job with the raiders. The launch of long lances at 16,000 yards in daytime combat makes me crazy. Might as well not have torpedoes if the AI routines fire them at those ranges. [:@]

RE: NEWSFLASH; Queen Mary sunk!
Yes, absolutely something to consider for the navy team!
New turn, new actions! [:D]
I've mentioned Efate before: It's now a size 2 AF and building.
Only 1 base force unit there and Noumea, a size 2 base, is the only support in range.
So here we go: first bombardments to close down Efate - tomorrow we land more than enough troops to secure the island.
Enemy airplanes from Noumea harassed our destroyers; at least we know what to expect. A small Mutsuki class destroyer (expandable) took a hit and
will retire to Luganville.
While our subs sank a cargo ship at Efate an enemy sub sank a loaded cargo ship, so Andy knows we're coming.
Not much he can do about it though. After Efate we will turn towards Noumea and New Caledonia; a full fledged division is loaded and the KB will support the invasion.
7 enemy LCU's spotted but not a lot of firepower. Figure that 1-2 bombardments will close it down.
Let's see what we can get into the bag..my biggest concern is enemy subs but not much to do about that. ASW TFs lead the way and plenty of ASW ac on the ships.

South Pacific
This is more or less a hit and run operation.
- Destroy as much as possible, leave a small garrison and get out.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Apr 10, 43
A bit annoyed; sent 2 destroyer squadrons with higher speed into Efate.
What happens? The Yamato bombardment group goes in first to engage PT boats [:@]

I definetely preferre having a 500 Hellcat Cap and some "slow" CVEs over 250-300 Cap and only fleet carriers. What you shouldn´t forget is the fact that if you have two or three CV TFs and one with CVE is that in probably three out of four times the CVE TF isn´t attacked at all if the enemy has a good DL as the attack routine will then pick the CV TFs and not target the CVE at all. If you put CVE together with the CV, well that´s another story then.
I would bet on a better result with the CVE compared to no CVE because all the CVE do most times is sharing their Hellcats and some additional Avengers. And even if a strike attacks the CVE TF then I´m still glad that this wave attacks the CVE TF and not put my CV under. And there seems to be quite a substantial difference between 250 Hellcats or 400-500 Hellcats on Cap. My last carrier engagement saw me not losing a single ship with 400+ Hellcats on Cap and KB´s air arm was shred (guess more than a hundred bombers made it through Cap though). Without the 200 Hellcats from CVE that I had I bet my carriers would have been whiped out. The CVE TF wasn´t even targetted. But to each his own...

They will only die if the enemy bombers get through the CAP relatively unscathed.
I'll take 400 additional fighters in vulnerable CVEs over no additional fighters ANY day.
can only agree, even if it would take some 15-20 CVE to add 400 Hellcats which Andy probably won´t have. 400 additional fighters would probably account for another 150-200 enemy aircraft shot down and that´s quite a number IMO. AE has made a big step forward in regards to Cap but numbers still do count a lot.

RE: NEWSFLASH; Queen Mary sunk!

Andy O Andy. What are you doing?
at times I think Andy took over some habits from the AI... [:(]
RE: NEWSFLASH; Queen Mary sunk!
Interesting turn; we unload at Efate - the place is quiet and airfields closed.
Our carriers sink a handful of loaded fuel and troop carriers at Noumea; no enemy ac in the air.
I suspect Andy has packed Noumea with too many ac and is in the progress of both airlifting reinforcements and bolstering the islands
bomber capacity. New intel reveal 10 units and 10k men there. Before we start invading Noumea I need to know more about the garrison there.
Yes, we got a full sized division so any small hodge podge of units would be doable.
But first we need to close down the airfields so tomorrow our bombardment TFs will head in and try to wreck the place.
We'll repeat this process and follow up with the KB to ensure the fields are closed before we make a final decision whether to invade or not.
What's your thoughts about this?
Another ground combat in Burma and another even odds; truly need a high roll combined with an enemy low roll.

Efate
