It's been reported that there are the following at Wyndham: 13 LCUs 86500/710/22
Combat
The IJN conducted two bombardments of the Allied troops outside of Wyndham causing moderate casualties.
The Allied troops assaulted the Japanese defenders at Wyndham and suffered heavy casualties in the failed attempt to liberate it. It's thought that the Japanese suffered moderate loses.
The SS Stingray attacked an AK about 110 miles S of Merauke but the torpedoes either missed or they failed to detonate.
Japanese planes attacked Kweiyang causing light casualties and moderate damage to the airbase. One Helen was observed to have been hit by ground fire.
There has been a continued and growing number of Japanese recon flights over Kweiyang. The Chinese are expecting an attack there based on intel provided to them from Washington and are moving some more troops into the defenses around the city.
“So the two of you are sure about this getting married?” Jac turns to Milt and says, “What with the war on and all why wait when the future is so uncertain?”
“She could do worse,” replies Milt as he gives Pete a poke and a wink.
“It's settled then,” says Jac, “All you two need to do is set a date.”
“We wanted to get the pub put into both of our names so I guess we should do this as soon as possible,” Pete says and Sylvia nods in agreement. “I'm going down to the pub and see about setting things in motion. Do you know a lawyer that we could use?”
“A what? Oh, a barrister,” says Milt laughing, “I suppose we'll have to get used to having a Yank around and his talking funny on a regular basis.”
Orsini and Gunny are talking about what lies ahead and Gunny has reassured him that he'll do just fine. “Remember to bring along the ammo and all will be OK. Slim will sweep the Japs away and we'll accomplish our mission, like Marines always do.” Gunny gets up and walks to another cluster of men and Jack and Joe laugh and wink at Slim while they both make the “ratta, tat, tat” sound. All of this time relaxing is making the men increasingly edgy.
The crews of the Lang and O'Bannon have been praised for their actions in saving their ships and bringing them home for repairs. Bill was pleased to release his men for shore leave and they head off to points unknown. Bill then heads off for the Royal Hawaiian Hotel along with his officers where they plan on having a celebratory dinner.
Sandy and Dave are enduring a second day of being snowed in and he's muttering about the damned war as he drinks a hot mug of tea. “Tea! This running out of coffee just won't do. We'll have to plan better next month,” he says to Sandy.
“Yeah, that'll be the day when you slack off in your coffee drinking. Maybe we should reuse the grounds a couple of times to make it last?” says Sandy knowing that Dave would never agree to such a thing until they run out again.
Red is still telling Cookie that the Christmas dinner was the best he ever had. “That just means that you never had really good cooking,” laughs Cookie. The two of them are on their way back to the ship with a bottle of French champagne for New Year's Eve. Cookie is one of those guys that has a knack for bartering and Red panicked when he heard Lucky being included in the deal. “Just joking...”

SS Tarpon was attacked 78 miles SE of Gili Gili by IJN PCs and MSWs. Tarpon got a pretty good rattling and suffered light damage to some of the more sensitive systems and as a result has been rerouted to Brisbane for repairs. The crew was longing for some action, but they didn't want to be on the receiving end of it.
Near Koepang the submarine Gurnard puts a functional fish into an MSW that appeared almost as soon as the sub had finished laying her mines. Lot of drills and a sense of urgency allowed for a quick execution of the torpedo attack after the mines were gone.
A patrol plane spotted and reported a Japanese TF 99 miles SE of Gili Gili and 36 X B-17E were dispatched to attack it. The planes found 2 X MSW and managed to put 2 bombs onto one of them causing fires, heavy damage and ultimately it's demise.
The Japanese conducted a bombardment attack on the Allied forces near Wyndham and some Allied artillery responded with the result of light casualties to both sides.
A withdrawal to Derby has been ordered and fresh troops moved towards Alice Springs and towards the Darwin front while exhausted formations move in the opposite direction to refit.
Work on the Lang's flooding has been completed, but now the extensive systems damage must be attended to.
O'Bannon's crew has been granted liberty as the work gangs busily crawl all over her making repairs. Bill heads to the Royal Hawaiian Hotel after checking on his ship as he's billeted there. He can't think of a nicer spot to spend New Year's Eve tomorrow than there as long as he can't be with Sandy.
The men of the 2nd Marine Division are being subjected to a barrage of rumors like never before and Gunny calms his boys down. “Look, where doesn't matter. What does matter is that we kick butt and do our jobs. If we do that enough times then the where will be home. Marines don't start fights, but we sure do finish them,” he says. The men nod and resume their time killing.
Pete and Sylvia met with the pub's owner and his wife. They had a bite to eat, a drink and they managed to work out a price and terms for the business to change hands. Now a wedding date must be decided on as before any legal documents are signed they want to be married.
Two letters from Bill arrived today as Dave managed to get into town and stopped at the Post Office, which doubles as a grocery store, to ask about any mail. He manages to have a cup of coffee before heading back home so his trip was a success. Sandy devours the letters and realizes that they were written over ten days apart from one another. There must be more on the way, she excitedly thinks.

I couldn't figure out why you had that bit about Jamaica and Sheffield before. Now I remember: the Battle of the Barents Sea, where two light cruisers will chase off a heavy cruiser and a "pocket battleship".
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

Pete, Sylvia, Milt and Jac go to the pub for a party being thrown by the owner for his customers. After the place is packed with people the owner announced that there will be a change of ownership. This brought a moan from the patrons until he told them that Pete and Sylvia are getting married and will be the new owners. Good news indeed to bring in a new year amidst all the bad news of the war. They called for Pete to say something and he promised that little, if anything would change. Somebody yelled that, “Your accent will, given enough time, as we'll turn you into a proper citizen.” This brought a loud laugh and everyone had a great time.
Bill has finished a letter to Sandy and leaves the room for the New Year's Eve bash that LT Field has arranged for O'Bannon's crew. The ship had a fund that was used to finance the closing of a bar to the public. There will be food and drinks and Bill and his exec along with other officers from the ship will provide a buffer for the party and the expected visit from Shore Patrol. After about two hours of eating and drinking a bus arrived and women got off of it accompanied by one of the chiefs. They go inside and the party hits a new level. After the ordeal they've been through Bill thinks that this is just what they needed to blow off steam. The music is loud and so are the men, but the night's festivities are peaceful and the SP never comes around.

Sandy and Dave are having a quiet dinner together with a neighbor and his wife, who have lost a son to the war and have another serving somewhere in Australia with the Americal Division. They all pray for the safe return of everyone's sons and the man adds that he prays that the Axis countries are reduced to rubble, never to be able to attack peaceful countries again.

3 X IJN MSW conducted sweeping ops at Koepang.
The daily Japanese bombing of Chinese defenders on the Kweiyang area defense perimeter caused light loses to the troops and moderate damage to the unused airbase.
The Americal Division was attacked by Japanese planes and suffered light loses while a lone Helen was thought to have been damaged. The division is about 72 miles SW of Wyndham after having retreated into the bush. It's now trying to regain access to the rail line as it moves towards Derby.
Continued daily multiple overflights of Kweiyang have added credence to a suspected Japanese offensive in that area.
The staging area for Operation Snowball continues to swell with the influx of yet more troops, fuel, supplies, ships and planes. Gunny scans the horizon and is amazed at what he sees. One of the men in the platoon is there with him and lets out a soft whistle of amazement.
“Damn, I'd hate to be a Jap wherever all of that is going to,” the Marine says.
Gunny replies, “You, my boy, along with the rest of us are going to be heading wherever those ships take us. We are the weapons that will kill the Japs and take the real estate, not those ships or the planes.”
More than a couple of the men in Gunny's platoon are dealing with varying states of being hungover. Just to remind them of who owns their behinds he tells them that their Marine Corps wants them to enjoy PT today. The find an open space and start with jumping jacks, moving on to squat thrusts, then situps and finally they suffer through pushups. The groans are getting progressively louder and Gunny reminds them that drunkenness will not be tolerated. He then dismisses the men, having made his point.
While the work on the O'Bannon continues Bill has “arranged” for work parties to scrape and paint the ship. It's needed work and the crew must be kept busy. Bill got 4 more letters from Sandy today and sets about reading them. He laughs about the coffee rationing and how Dave has reacted to it. He wonders how they'll get buy with parts for cars and trucks in civilian use so hard to come by.
Sandy got a ride into town with a neighbor who stopped by to see if they needed anything. All of the people in the area are sharing rides into town and shopping for each other as gas rationing has changed their lives. Sandy's first stop was the Post Office where she found a pile of letters for her from Bill. The town's Post Master/Mail Clerk/grocery store manager says, “That fella writing to you so much must be smitten.”
“1943 sure does feel the same as 1942,” says Red as he's busily cleaning up around Palawan's bridge. “I seem to recall doing lots of this kind of work last year and things are certainly looking the same now too.” A couple other members of the crew working with him agree.
The men of VMF-222 laze around with virtually nothing to do when in bursts their squadron CO who announces, “We have to be in good condition to fly combat missions so we're going to start a program to whip you lazy guys back into shape. We'll start tomorrow morning with an exercise session after which you'll get chow. In the afternoon there will be more exercise for you if you didn't get flight time in.” A groan goes up from all of the pilots.

It's was a peaceful day at Kweiyang until the airfield was attacked by Japanese planes. A single bomb found the runway and gunners claimed to have hit what they think was a Nick.
A few IJN MSWs found a mine field at Darwin and immediately started sweeping it.
The 1st Australian Division was attacked by aircraft about 40 miles SW of Wyndham and reported light casualties.
About 57 miles NE of the rail junction the Japanese conducted a bombardment attack on the Allied troops there causing light casualties.
A Nell on a maritime patrol spotted and attacked the submarine Tunny 47 miles W of Majuro. The sub managed to pull the plug and dive before any damage was done thanks to the new radar set that was part of the sub's recent refit.
A Betty attacked the SS Halibut N of the Marshalls doing no damage other than a suspected broken hand as the crew tumbled down the hatch as they cleared the conning tower. Her skipper credits the new radar with having given them ample time to dive and avoid the attacker.
The DD Benham arrived Pearl Harbor in the early morning, escorting a small convoy and was immediately refueled, provisioned and ordered to leave escorting another convoy heading in the opposite direction that they had just come from. The crew was disappointed not to get any liberty, but the war continues to make it's demands and something must be afoot as the tempo of things has been accelerated lately. They did get some sacks of mail and once Phil gets a chance he checks and sees that there's a letter from Bill. Benham leaves Pearl that evening bound for, nobody knows until they are at sea and their sealed orders can be opened only then.
Repairs are proceeding on O'Bannon, but slower than Bill would like. Pearl's facilities are extremely busy and O'Bannon isn't getting focused on as many other vessels are being worked on also.
Pete and Sylvia are to be married on Wednesday, the 6th of January, and they made plans to visit a solicitor the following day to arrange for the purchase of the pub. The place is really a hotel too so it'll be quite an undertaking for the couple. It was originally built in 1886 and was called the Kangaroo Point Hotel then. It's current owner renamed it the Story Bridge Hotel after the bridge, under which it sits, was opened in 1940. Unknown to Pete and Sylvia a certain intelligence agency based in Washington DC has decided to help float Pete's undertaking and the appropriate parties are monitoring the situation to make sure that the couple will be able to secure the funding they will need to complete their purchase.
“You know that if we have to spend the rest of the war in this place it would be really nice,” said Cookie as he walks along the side of the road with Red and Lucky. Suddenly Lucky strains at his leash because he's spotted another dog. “Lover boy here still hasn't figured out that every being on this planet doesn't want to play with him,” says Cookie as Red strains to hold onto the dog. “One of these days he's going to get attacked by another dog and then he'll learn.”
“I hope not,” says Red as he drags Lucky away in the opposite direction. “I really need to train this dog to walk with a leash.”
Training with his fellow pilots has left Stick sore. He hasn't felt this bad since he was in Basic. A nice hot shower, some chow and then a movie is being shown at the base called Road To Morocco. He likes Bob Hope, who he thinks is very funny, Bing Crosby, nuts about his singing, and Dorothy Lamour, hubba hubba.

The troops that retreated from Wyndham into the bush are in danger of being cut off as the Japanese push towards Derby. If the Allied force blocking them can't hold then the bulk of Allied troops in this area could be wiped out. The failure of Operation Grinder and the possible loss of such a huge force could be an early nail in the Allied coffin as the one thing the Allies are short of is LCUs. This retreating into the worst possible location when the adjacent hex is controlled by your forces makes no sense. The bush or the rail line? Hmm, seemed like a no brainer.
All Allied hopes now seem to lie in Operation Snowball. It it fails then the prospects of an Allied victory become very bleak.
The men and machines of Operation Snowball remain poised, but the go has yet to be given.
The men 2nd Marine Division expect to be the first troops ashore when the attack begins because that's what Marines do. The men of Gunny's platoon are primed and ready to go and they believe that the sitting around and waiting is worse than anything else. Orsini and his pals just try and find things to do to pass the time of day.
FDR consults with his military advisers and they tell him that Operation Snowball is almost ready to go. They want time after Snowball is done to analyze the operation and put what they learn into Operation Revenge. Operation Sunshine is still on the shelf and looks to be there for months to come, if ever.
Another day of snow and Sandy rereads letters for the umpteenth time. Dave is savoring a hot mug of coffee and curses the snow. His hand is just about back to normal, or so he says.
The work on the O'Bannon continues and Bill kills time by jogging, writing letters and even attending meetings on the base. Whoever said that war is long periods of boredom interrupted by short, sharp periods of sheer terror knew what he was talking about.

Kweiyang has seen many Dinahs taking recon photos today.

The SS-27, near Darwin was attacked by DDs and MSWs. She suffered some damage.
Kunming was raided by 6 X Helen, of which 2 were reported to have been damaged by ground fire. The bases had very light damage, though one IL-4c was destroyed on the ground.
Later in the day Kweiyang was hit by a large number of Japanese planes and had heavy damage done to the runway and moderate damage to base facilities and supplies. The raiders departed with no damaged planes.
Tulagi was hit by 39 X B-17E and 42 X B-24D and facing no opposition except for AA did light damage to the port. 2 X B-17E and 3 X B-24D were damaged.
The Japanese conducted an artillery bombardment of the area causing moderate loses to the Allied forces sitting astride the rail line about 41 miles outside of Wyndham. This blocking force expects to be assaulted withing the next 24 hours and hopes to hold the way open for retreating troops.
The DDs Lang and O'Bannon have been ordered back to the States for further repairs. They will leave Pearl in a day or two as part of an eastbound convoy. Bill hopes that his ship will be sent to Mare Island, but he'll take whatever he gets so they can return to action.
The Tarpon docked at Brisbane and will undergo repairs there.
Tomorrow is the big day and Sylvia is scurrying here and there, making every person around her nervous. Milt and Pete announce that they're going down to the pub to check on things. Their intention is to get out of the house and relax with a pint. Jac tries, in vain, to calm her daughter who continues to be a whirlwind.
Red has redoubled his efforts to train Lucky and the men of the Palawan enjoy the proceedings. “Maybe you should just do what the dog want,” says one of the men. Another chimes in with, “Lucky will show you who the boss is.” The men are laughing and this only serves to frustrate Red even more.
“Red,” says a new man, “I used to train dogs for people in Hollywood and I can help you, if you want.” Red nods and the man continues, “The first things you need to do is remain calm and firmly be the boss. Never hit the dog and use treats as rewards for doing something right. Here watch.” A little while later the training session is over and Lucky will sit on command. “Remember that the dogs will tire of training quickly so 2 or 3 times a day for 10 to 15 minutes is best. When we teach him to walk with you a 40 minute session will be OK.”

Advance Australia Fair -- er, maybe not
If the Allied force blocking them can't hold then the bulk of Allied troops in this area could be wiped out. The failure of Operation Grinder and the possible loss of such a huge force could be an early nail in the Allied coffin as the one thing the Allies are short of is LCUs. This retreating into the worst possible location when the adjacent hex is controlled by your forces makes no sense.

3 X MSWs swept mines at Darwin.
The S-27 was attacked by 6 X DD at Darwin, but sustained nothing worse that rattled nerves. The sub was attacked again later in the day by DDs, but they did no damage to her.
The daily air raid on Kweiyang did moderate damage to the airbase and light casualties to the troops stationed there.
Near Sydney an IJN sub attacked a small convoy and put 2 fish into the AK Legazpi. The ship immediately caught fire, had very heavy flooding and heavy damage. In spite of all this the vessel managed to enter the harbor and should be saved. The populace along the harbor entrance saw the attack and were horrified that this could happen at their own doorstep. The newspaper headlines trumpeted “Where is the RAN?”
Japanese troops attacked the Allied troops forcing an Allied retreat towards Derby. It was reported that the Japanese suffered very heavy casualties while the Allies lost heavily. Allied leaders have had their worst fears realized and it's now expected that Derby and Broome will once again be in enemy hands in short order. The Allied troops in the outback are now cut off and their very survival is in doubt. There will be no relief effort made as the only Allied formations in the area are in dire need of refit and replacements.
4 X Dinah appeared in the skies over Kweiyang during the course of the day.
No flying today and calisthenics are the toll to be paid as Stick moans while he does situps.
The men in Gunny's platoon are tired of waiting as are the men of other units assigned to Operation Snowball. “When the hell are they going to get us off of this overcrowded place?” That seems to be the popular feeling among the men and Orsini is no different. Gunny tells his boys to be patient and before long they'll be wishing they were back here.
On his wedding day Pete is more nervous than ever before in his life. Milt says to him that it's normal and pats him on the back reassuringly. Sylvia is a bundle of nerves and everybody is avoiding her. To make matters worse the boy who lives next door spreads the war news and none of it's good. When the appropriate time finally rolls around Pete, Milt and about 5 other men who have joined them head for the pub. The women say they will be along shortly. When Pete walks into the pub he's amazed at how many people are there, all pounding him on the back. A while late the women arrive and Pete is amazed at how beautiful Sylvia looks. The ceremony is short and when they are to exchange vows Pete freezes. Milt fixes that with a less than gentle tap on his back. Once rings are exchanged and the newlyweds kiss the festivities begin in earnest. The amount of food is astounding, especially considering that a war is on and this country has been ripped apart. Drinks flow freely and a good time is had by all. Before Pete and Sylvia know it the party is breaking up and they realize that it's after 2 AM. They thank the owner of the pub and again offer to pay and all he says is no. They head back to Milt and Jac's home with them and are thankful that the appointment with the solicitor isn't until 3 PM tomorrow.

S-27 was attacked near Darwin by 6 DDs and though the attack wasn't especially violent one depth charge was so close that when it detonated the sub sustained moderate systems damage and a little flooding. She will return to port for repairs.
The DD Morris was torpedoed near Noumea as she was returning from a refit at Auckland. She now has very heavy systems damage, severe flooding and moderately heavy fires. Because this damage was suffered at a major port she will live to fight another day.
Kweiyang saw it's daily air raid, which cratered the craters at the unused airbase. Ground troops sustained very light loses and a Helen was reported to have been damaged.
Pagan was hit by 24 X Blenheim, 27 X Wellington, 28 X Hudson and 58 X B-25C. They reportedly did moderate damage to the resources and suffered no loses as the Japanese had nothing aloft and the ground fire, if any was inaccurate.
102 X B-17E raided Port Moresby and were greeted by 30 X Zero and 14 X Tony. The big bombers lost 14 planes while another 36 were damaged. They did a moderate amount of damage to the airbase, runway and supply dumps. The Japanese lost 25 X Zero and 4 X Tony while another 6 X Tony were damaged.
The daily Dinah visits to Kweiyang continued and overflights of Trimcomalee and Imphal are now commonplace.
The 112th USA Cav Rgt, 40th USA FA Rgt and the 19th USA Eng Rgt have marched to the rail line. They are now directly in the path of a very large Japanese force that is expected to advance at any time. Within the next couple of days the rest of the Allied forces are expected to arrive in this area from the bush. Allied commanders can do nothing other than to pray that the Japanese rest before moving up.
Two infantry divisions will be arriving at Alice Springs shortly to shore up the collapsed Allied defensive lines.
Allied ships are at sea or are departing their base for the first stage of Operation Snowball. The old BBs under the command of Admiral Ed Landy will soften things up a bit while the CVs will lend air cover and bombs to the effort. A TF of 6 X DMS will sweep mines and the troops will begin loading onto transports within a week. The target will run red with Japanese blood. The 2nd Marine Division has been issued orders and the men expect combat soon. Gunny knows that once they board their ships the division will be the tip of the spear, where he doesn't know yet.
No word on when the departure for the US will happen so Bill contents himself with writing letters and enjoying Hawaii.
Another day of exercise and the pilots of VMF-222 grumble about their training, when are the new planes going to get here and when do we move to where the action is.
Red is amazed at how fast Lucky learns. “He's smarter than you,” says the first mate with a laugh.
Pete and Sylvia waken and hug and kiss one another. “Good morning Mrs. Myers,” says Pete as he kisses his bride again, “This is great.”

The Allies can't afford a failure so overkill is better than being short. Future ops will come along and their scope will be less with less used. This is also meant as a message of what lies ahead. I also don't want a counter to retake what I hope to take.

The MSW Romney was sweeping the mine field at Trimcomalee.
The submarine Grayling attacked IJN DDs near Darwin, missed and then suffered through a very heavy ASW attack. She has sustained moderate systems and flooding damage. The crew sets about the grim task of fighting the water as they make for base.
Multiple Dinah recon flights over Kweiyang continued. The expected raid by the Tojos and Helens showed up at Kweiyang and did their usual causing further light damage to the airbase and very light casualties to the base personnel. Two of the bombers were reportedly damaged.
The 3rd Australian Division, about 200 miles from Derby, was attacked by Tonys and Helens sustaining light loses. A Helen was observed to be smoking as the Japanese planes departed.
Ed has to assume that his bombardment force has been located and reported as he paces the Maryland's bridge. Her lookouts watched a Betty leisurely circling the TF. In addition to this the Japanese probably have spotted the CV TFs about 50 miles away. He always knew that Snowball would eventually be spotted and now that the USN is about to deal in death this time is as good as any.
Rear Admiral Ghormley, SOPAC, reads the intel report and wonders if there is an error in the strength assessment of the Japanese on Tarawa. A LCU seems to be missing according to the latest recon. They can't have disappeared into thin air.
A TF made up of 6 X DMS will depart Baker shortly and make for Tarawa to begin sweeping ops.
Just prior to boarding the Amphibious TF that will take them to Tarawa Major General Julian C Smith, Commander of the US 2nd Marine Division addresses his men.
“The 2nd Marine Division has been especially chosen by the High Command for the assault on Tarawa...what you do there will set a high standard for all future operations in the Central Pacific area.”
The men begin boarding their transports as do the troops of the 43rd USA Div, 47th Engr Rgt and the 1st Amphib HQs. The 3rd and 4th USMC Raider Bns board APDs and DDs for their planned seizure of Apamama. The follow on force for Tarawa is made up of 147th RCT, 122nd & 123rd USAAF BFs, 828th EAB, 16th Sea Bees, 8th USMC Def Bn and the 205th USA Cst AA Rgt.
Gunny's platoon will hit the beaches in the first assault wave. Nobody knows what to expect other than knowing that the Japanese will put up a stout defense. They are nervous, but trying to hide it from one another as nobody wants to admit that they're scared.
The attack on Makin has to wait for returning transports as there aren't enough to go around. The High Command had wanted to hit both islands simultaneously. The shortage of transports will also delay the build up on Tarawa. Today C-47s started transporting the 71st Av Rgt from Canton to Baker.
Bill has heard rumors that a large op is under way and he thinks of his days in the Pentagon where nothing was a secret from him. Better not knowing and having a ship, he thinks. The repairs on the O'Bannon are proceeding slower than he'd like, but considering the activity at Pearl the workers are doing a great job.
Lucky is doing great with the training, but Red is a little jealous of the trainer. Cookie tells Red, “You're crazy. Who does the dog sleep with? Who does the dog follow everywhere? PK so sometimes he follows me around looking for food. Lucky is your dog, no doubts.”
“The solicitor expects that everything will be in order and the papers will be ready to be signed by the middle of the week,” says Sylvia. Pete and Milt announce that they're going out for a pint.
“Why don't the two of you join us whenever you want and we'll have a bite to eat also,” says Pete. “You know where we'll be.”
Dave sits at the table flexing his hand and announces that it's good as new. “Good ,” says Sandy, “You get to shovel the snow next time and you can fix that clutch on the Ford that's been waiting for you.”

IJN MSWs swept the mine field at Darwin.
The usual Dinah appearances at Kweiyang were made again today and 29 X Ki-21 Sally and 30 X Ki-49 Helen hit doing light damage and causing negligible casualties.
The 2nd Australian Division was attacked by planes as they continue to retreat towards Derby, suffering light casualties. The raid of 9 X Tony and 21 X Helen met with a surprise as 7 X Kittyhawk were there. A Tony was downed and a Helen was damaged at the cost of losing a Kittyhawk and 3 others were damaged. The men of the 2nd Division were cheering wildly as they finally had some air cover.
On a beautiful and tranquil morning Tarawa's defenders were suddenly aware of the drone of approaching planes. The USN sent 17 X F4F-4 and 102 X SBD to hit the air field. At the cost of 5 downed SBDs and another 21 damaged they did moderate damage to the runway, facilities and supply dumps. Japanese ground loses were estimated to have been light.
Not much later the USN conducted a naval bombardment of the island with 12 of the old BBs. The old girls were engaged by coastal guns and Idaho, California, Oklahoma and Colorado suffered multiple hits. The damage done to the BBs was nothing to speak of, though some new paint will be needed in the future. Japanese ground loses were thought to have been heavy and the port and airbase were dealt additional damage. Recon damage assessment puts port damage as heavy.
On the bridge of the BB Maryland Ed looked at Tarawa through his binoculars as the big guns of his TF pounded the island, throwing coral and sand skywards. Word was been passed that a snooping Betty has spotted the CV TF, but that too was inevitable. Welcome to Operation Snowball he thinks. This is a new beginning for the US military, the offensive in the Pacific.
It would appear that the Japanese are not chasing the retreating Allied forces. Given the situation it's the most Allied commanders involved in Operation Grinder could have hoped for.
“A paltry sum,” says Bill Donovan, “Do it and we'll have an innkeeper working for us.” The staffer leaves the office to issue the orders and authorization for the money. The terms that this guy is getting are great and it's a given that with the occupancy rate not being a problem that he'll be able to pay off the loan no sweat. Hmm, lost an arm at Darwin when the Japs invaded and now married. The guy works fast, pretty little thing. The papers are all in order and within hours the wheels will be set in motion.
Pete and Sylvia take a walk before she has to go to work at the medical facility that handles so many of the shattered bodies the war produces. She's told Pete that she can't quit as what her job is needs to be done. “Maybe we can hire somebody to clean the rooms and someone else to cook. I'm sure that you can handle the pub itself and the record keeping for the hotel. I'll help when I'm not at the hospital.” Pete nods and wonders about the future that he now shares with her.
No letters today means that Bill was at sea recently Sandy thinks. She wishes that could could know where he is because the Pacific Ocean is pretty big.
The 1st Panzer Army in the Caucasus started withdrawing from the Terek front to avoid being cut off.

I never thought that doing an AAR would be so time consuming and difficult.

RE: Welcome to Operation Snowball
On a beautiful and tranquil morning Tarawa's defenders were suddenly aware of the drone of approaching planes. The USN sent 17 X F4F-4 and 102 X SBD to hit the air field.
Hmmm. No TBF's?
Here's wishing you better luck than the historical invasion of Tarawa . . .
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

RE: Welcome to Operation Snowball
The TBFs were in reserve in case of an IJN party.
Sorry, but I'm having some real life issues that are eating up my time and I can't seem to find the time for the AAR. We'll see about a new installment, tomorrow latest.

MSWs continued sweeping ops at Darwin.
A Japanese sub was attacked by 6 DDs 47 miles SW of Short lands.
The bombardment of Tarawa continued and the coastal guns returned fire. The BB Tennessee was hit 10 times and the Maryland took 3 hits. Again the Japanese guns weren't big enough to do any real damage. Japanese casualties were thought to be heavy and facilities on the island have been heavily damaged.
The MSW Baroda was sweeping mines at Trimcomalee when suddenly a lookout screamed, “wakes in the water!” Seconds later a torpedo slammed into the vessel sinking her.
The routine air attack on Kweiyang came in after the Dinahs snooped around and did moderate damage to the airbase and caused light casualties to the troops. A Helen was reportedly damaged.
The 3rd Australian Division was attacked by Japanese planes on the road to Derby. Allied planes were on hand to intercept and casualties were reported as light.
The Americal USA Division was also subjected to an air raid a few miles away and suffered light casualties while 2 X Helen were damaged.

Enemy sub activity near Trimcomalee and planes spotted an oil slick after attacks made.
Both Imphal and Trimcomalee have been spotting Japanese recon flights on a daily basis lately.
The MSW Rigel was torpedoed 36 miles from Darwin. The 2 fish were more than the vessel could sustain and she sank within minutes, though an SOS with a position was given.
Grayling continues her struggle to stop the flooding and make it to Cairns for temporary repairs before heading to a yard.
Repairs to the O'Bannon are going faster than expected so a cruise to the States has now been ruled out.
Dave's hand really is OK as he's busily shoveling snow off of the porch of the house. When he smells coffee brewing he starts to whistle. Sandy laughs at this and is saddened because snow means no chance of mail today.
Elaine spent the day at Kennywood Park, outside of Pittsburgh, and though she doesn't like the rides she did have a good time. The girls spent most of the day flirting with the men in uniform that seem to be everywhere. At the end of the day they headed back to Squirrel Hill for a movie and some ice cream at Isley's.
The solicitor spoke with Pete and Sylvia this afternoon and told them that the papers would be ready for signing on Friday morning. This is a cause for celebration and trepidation as Pete knows nothing of being in business, much less as an innkeeper. “I know a bit about bars, I mean pubs,” he says at the dinner table, “But I have to admit that I know nothing about being in business.” The family tells him not to worry.
“You know that you're a lucky man. You survived a downed plane over water, being in a battle with the Japs and living and you married my daughter,” says Jac. Everyone laughs at the last bit of what she said and Pete relaxes. He does feel like part of the family.
