observation not a complaint

Post by bo »

I am sure the Wastelands people are good playtesters but the best playtesters are the players who play this game everyday. These are not complaints but little things that could make this an even better game. For example I would have liked to have seen Truk be a bigger # for naval ships but now I feel I was grrrrrr wrong it was a fleet anchorage nothing more, so I feel Wastelands and Razz got that right. I dont know if there will be a next patch or not after 1.4 comes out but if there is one I would like to make a few suggestions for the game.

1-It is way too easy to defeat China, Communist China and British India as the Japanese human which in turn really hurts the U.S. because they need a lot of time to be able to stand up to the Japanese, one of the reasons China goes so early in the game is the ability of the Japanese to move units to home locations to refurbish themselves eg: a 2.4 unit cannot be upgraded in China so it has to be relocated to a base where this can be done. it then can be upgraded to a 6.2 unit which can easily handle most Chinese units, I believe the units can only be upgraded in the home nation Japan. the way it is now, on one move you relocate the unit to Korea no ships involved, the next move you upgrade it and the next move you relocate it back into China, three moves and it is back in action much more powerful than it originally was. If it were [the unit] sent to Japan it would require fleet movements which would add a few more turns to upgrade and cost fleet movement monetary points, how the Japanese AI handles things I am not aware of. I dont know if this idea would change things one iota, but it might.

2-The AI is the AI in this game and every other war game, it is what it is. But one glaring error the AI makes IMHO is the inability to recognize when it is great peril [great peril is there any other kind[;)]] EG: The American fleet bombards a base like Manilla, and it stays in the vicinity way to long, the greatest peril to fleets is not other fleets but at least to me, airpower, yesterday my airpower waffled the American fleet off Manilla and what did the fleet do, nada, just sat there, I brought in more airpower and ravaged the fleet but it just sat there absorbing tremendous punsihment, and the fleet just sat there, the AI cannot allow that to happen.

3-Fog of War, well not exactly in this game, this is a vast ocean the Pacific, and it would make sense to me if coast watchers fishing boats and the like could not see the entire ocean like they can now, it is easy for me to check all the differnt seas in the Pacific ocean to see what fleets are where and can plan accordling what to do next when you know where each enemy fleet is, the element of suprise is non-exsistant here. I think IMHO it would be better to have search planes searching for enemy fleets on a hit or miss basis.

Do appreciate Wasteland correcting the supply problem in the coming patch and hopefully maybe adress some of my points[hopefully[;)]]

I'm sure there will be [:)]

Personally I think it's a good idea to make Korea a non-owned territory. I would like to hear more opinions about that. So folks, please give us your opinion.

I'll talk with the programmers and see what can we do with the fleets behavior.

bo, are you 100% sure that the fleet you are seeing is the exact fleet in the sea zone? In other words, if you see 3 CA and 1 CV, are there really forces this size? I'm pretty sure that very often you will find much larger fleet in there.

We are doing our best to support our games as long as there is such a need.

Hey Doom not sure about the sizes of the fleet you are most likely correct as to what I see on the screen and what is actually there, I just feel that they should not be seen at all unless they took some kind of military action.

Visibility of fleets have been reduced quite a bit in the Rising Sun.

Makes it a chess match.

For China defense... it's beefed up allot in too!

One thing I would like to see is a range limit for redeployment.

I never sat down and counted the hexes, but a shorter range would help allot.

Right now you can redeploy from Korea to Burma.

That's too far and should take two turns.

Why would you want a range limitation? Because it's all jungles, swamps, and Mountains, very limited rail and roads.

Terrain is much harder to move through than Europe.

Actually Korea was under Japanese rule during WW2.

Too bad the AI can not make an air strike from an adjacent sea zone.

Allot of the fleet actions are tied into strategic goals; Amphibious landings, patrolling, control of sea zones. At what point do you tell the fleet to withdraw or attack based upon the number of air strikes? We had two types of air attacks beforehand. Now the AI can not distinguishing between a land aircraft bombing and a carrier bombing.

If the AI could tell it was being attacked by land base bombers, then if there were too many air strikes it may be a good idea to withdraw.

Is 6 strikes too many? That would be 3 land based bombers. If I was attacked like that, generally speaking one would withdraw or take out the bombers.

Maybe if the interception ratio was bumped up a little Bo wouldn't be able to pound the fleet into the bottom of the Ocean. It would be great if the AI could distinguish between the two types of strikes.

Then you could keep the interception as is, but double it against land based strikes.

Remember there is a key to defending China. The main change to defense for the Rising Sun is; the Chinese factions act as one, except Qang-Si and Communist Chiang Kei Shek, act as a different faction. The Allies coordinate much better.

Sounds good to me Razz about fleet visability in Rising Sun if you can do that could you change the redeployment also? I could also attack a fleet just once to keep it fair against the computer[:-] but I like to win going away[;)] I cringe when even one interception pops my carrier planes, but I realize more interceptions would be good for the game against the AI than less.

Thank you Doomtrader for your insight into a problem when it is presented in an orderly and without rancor fashion. I think you or Anraz said it is not easy to just change things when you are dealing with certain engines that make up this game, but at least looking into and giving an answer positive or negative is better than no answer at all. I think the most annoying thing about the posts here is that only a few of us comment on the game, now either no one else is playing the game anymore or they could care less or they have no insight into how the game is played. Doomtrader asked for comments so please do so everyone, tell us[the forum people] what else needs to be done in your opinion, would be deeply appreciated.

In my current AAR thread I have been trying to "subtly" hint that :

The phasing player needs to have some control of the reinforcement schedule with regard to timing, and destination sea area.
The "time on station" for fleets is entirely too long for the early war, and for the Japanese, perhaps, for the entire war.

Well that's the way it was in WW2 in the Pacific.
USA had to wait until November 42 and March 43 for large quantity of ships.

They had to build them. The Rising Sun does add ships based on historical arrival dates. They do get a few more before that time frame.

You can always build ships.

The USA had ships built on the East Coast and a few in Washington State.
Their arrival dates were always at LA, San Diego, then they refueled and went to Pearl. Most of the time they performed additional exercises for two to three weeks.

If Pearl Harbor is Japanese the AI defaults them to the que and you can pick ant port that has the applicable size.

I am refering to the event generated arrivals of troop transports in the Tasman Sea in the Australian scenario. Even with a constantly supplied fleet with seven Japanese CVs sitting there the game insists on floating the troops on in. They do not float long!

I would like, at least, the opportunity to defer their arrival. Even better would be to have them "arrive" in an off map box, and allow me to sail them to an Australian port. This would better reflect the real fear all navies have of troop transports becoming shark feeding stations.
