Matrix -- Highest Selling/Most Popular

Any feel as to which games Matrix offers are their biggest sellers and/or most popular games?

I would also go with WITP-AE also as one of the most popular, at worst it has the most vocal users. As for sales (which is what I believe V22 meant), Matrix doesn't release final figures. Yet, every now they intentionally let slip a numer or two, and going on past info, my guess is the original WITP would be the highest selling product (# of units) in the WWII category. Which I think (I could be way off) is the highest volume group for the company.

The only other war game (than WitP) that has had "buy now" hits of over 3000 is TOAW-an oldie but goodie.

There are a few others with over 2000, including Crown of Glory EE.

The Sci FY of Distant Worlds has over 2000 hits on its buy tab-even though it is still a new release. I assume that means it is a very hot seller.

Some of you guys forget the forum was reset a few years back. Steel Panthers had 100's of thousands of posts and hits before that. The sales hits would have surpassed WitP or WitP:AE by thousands.

... which I think is a mistake.

First it would put a stop to many price complaints, but more importantly it would let people gauge how much effort it would take to find a pbem opponent or what game is "dead" from a MP perspective, which would mean the AI becomes more important.

It's for this exact reason that Avalon Hill used to publish a list of their Top 10 sellers : this way you could see what their popular games were. They didn't publish absolute numbers, just a Top 10 ranking which I think would be good enough for us as well

I'm not so sure that the Buy Now hit means all that much. I hit one now and then just to see the price or see more information on a game. Does not convert to an actual purchase in most cases.

I'd like to see an official list from Matrix and hope that they do so some day. A top 10 or 25 list is a great thing. It would also be fun to see the biggest sellers of the last year and of all time.

You may be right about WITP being a big seller, but I often think big complicated games actually have a smaller (although more devoted) following. Just a thought. A big seller may often be a combination of popular topic, reasonable finish time and/or quick learning curve.

No reason anymore to chicken out - it's now under 50 euros for the download version thanks to the sale [;)]

To put in my 2 (euro)cents as to what I think is/was their biggest seller : Gary Grigsby's World at War - they went retail with that and I saw it in several shops. Doesn't mean it was their biggest moneymaker though, that's a whole different question.

I know - but I'm debating keeping my money for a nice new proper Joystick for my flight sims, keeping my money for WitE or perhaps even buying WitP:AE which is still cheaper than Command Ops.

So many choices and so little money - plus I've got two kids birthdays in December, WITH Christmas too! Bad month for wondering what game to buy :-(

Sounds like bad planning on your part [:D]

Anyway, the sale lasts until the first week of January so make sure your Christmas bonus isn't totally blown by then.

Far be it for me to appear to try to dissuade you from buying WITP:AE but...

In other posts you have indicated that you have many games which you are yet to play in a meaningful way because of lack of time. WITP:AE is an excellent game and very worthy of purchase but it does require a considerable investment of time, without which investment, you are going to quickly become very disillusioned with the game. By all means buy it, but be prepared to spend at least 50 hours on it, without distraction from other games, before you will start to become comfortable with the game. After that investment of time, it will still take much more play plus a detailed understanding of the manual and forum discussion before you will feel competent with it.

Voice of reason prevails and you are correct - I have ALOT of worthy games. In fact, if I were to not buy another game and play what I have, I could pick some Matrix titles up in their 2012 sale! [&o]

I was desperately wanting BftB and the sale was the ideal opportunity - but then seeing WitP:AE listed cheaper made me question BftB...then with no time to actually play AE anyway made me question the whole "buy now" thought anyway.

So I think I will play what I have - Thanks for helping clear the air Alfred [:D]

Judge, you can always play the smaller scenarios... I did that with WITP... lol I enjoyed that so much I grabbed AE.. but yet to play it.. but definitely a 'big' game.. so worth the higher Tag.. and AE now runs on the higher resolutions, so that's a BIG plus.. I wish they would do one more patch to WITP to do that as well..

BFTB.. when mentioned it would be on sale, I was thinking about it.. but 59 bucks is still over that 'magic' number.. the demo was fun and it is a good game.. but, I can't see my self spending 'countless' hours on it, like a WITP or games that I constantly go back to like HPS titles.. so, don't know on that one. might think about it during the next two months, but I highly doubt it..

Games, that I'm thinking about on the sale are GG World Divided.. and the Commander Europe... although, rumored layoffs at our biz next week, so wait and see before pulling the trigger on anything..

If you go simply by the game we released that the biggest number of people have downloaded and/or bought and played, SPWAW would be the winner. That still remains a free release, but even the Mega Campaigns and the General's Edition that combines them which are paid releases did quite well. WITP is certainly up there as well, doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out, but once you get past the obvious ones there would probably be some surprises. We don't divulge sales data as you know, but I will say that forum activity and "Buy Now" link counts are in many cases a weak correlation to sales.

Iirc SPWW2 was one of the first the Matrix titles, if not the first one ever. The information about a new distributor, taking Talonsoft's legacy and giving away games for free divulged even over the pond. Unfortunately back then internet was still slow and got charged in minute cycles here. So large downloads could be similiar expensive to importing a boxed game from the US.

Weird. I mean, I understand that neither forum activity nor clicking a link means there is or was a sale - but I have no idea why the "click per sale" or "post per sale" rate would be different between games.

The only way that makes sense to me is that the majority of Matrix customers never even look at the forums. They do not decide to buy a game based on forum activity so they do not even have an opportunity to click on the "buy now" link. They simply search for the game online and go directly to the store.

That is a foreign idea to me. It never even occurred to me that is how most people do their game purchasing-apparently it must be so.
