I bought the game because I don't know very much about the Russian Civil War. A well-designed strategy game is a good way to learn history (better than most lay-people believe).

Very true. I faced the same issue a while back and went on an 8 month reading binge. Walked away thinking it really sucked on both sides. The Whites however struck me as more depressing. Some sort of weird mix of lost glory and the worst sides if human nature coming out in very ugly ways.

The Russian civil war was a gigantic dog's breakfast. Dozens of factions, scores of ideologies, an entire Nation with every socio-economic class in turmoil. Chaos ! And chaos squared ! Notwithstanding all the ideological nonsense, everyone in the conflict was Russian. That's what made it so hard, and made it so bloody. Once the monarchy was gone, what did it mean to be a Russian? And just what the heck is that entity called Russia, anyway. Woof !!
