Looks like things will heat up right from the start. Nemo is reinforcing all the small islands next to Formosa and Okinawa. First battles will be over these small islands then. I will use Okinawa as a pure fighter base to provide CAP for all the mini-invasions. I will not use any capital ships in this campaign, but will rely on DDs and transports instead.

Heavy bombers from the Philippines will aid in surpressing the closest Japanese airfields. Meanwhile, all fleet carriers together with two army/amphib corps will move from the PI to Pearl Harbor. I want to get ashore on Hokkaido as soon as possible, and am aiming for a mid-October invasion.

I think I heard something about attacks on manpower not being that effective. Massed raids on the industry itself may be worse for VPs, as you won't destroy any, but you will disable a lot of industry, which takes time to repair and will use a lot of supplies.

I thought radar was broken?

Anyway, I had several DDs with radar in the taskforce, but the TF was protected by LRCAP from Okinawa. I think I might have had them on too high altitude though, so I will try to put up a CAP around 10k instead.

Looking at these two attacks again. Clearly Nemo is looking for the best Kamikaze strategy right now. One raid comes in at 43k, the other at 9k.

The 9k raid went against a target with radar. The 43k raid went against PTs. What troubles me is that both these raids got through my CAP. The 9k raid because of just 1 minute early warning, but the 43k raid had 9 minutes warning.

Any idea why the raid was spotted so late despite radar, and any idea how to defend against them?

From now on I will have to put at least two fighter units on CAP over my TFs, one high and one low.

Okinawa
Will continue to try to achieve air superiority around Okinawa. Black Widows on night-CAP, Mustangs and Thunderbolts on CAP over TFs and bases. Ive also flown in a Mosquito squadron to try to shoot up some barges, they are set to naval attack at 100.

Formosa
Doing a massive ground strike on Takao. Ive spotted some units moving there, and since Takao is in open ground, I hope to inflict some losses on a moving unit. I think Nemo is reinforcing the south coast of Formosa to build up some sort of invasion defence.

Most of my Heavies in the Philippines are stood down today to reduce fatigue/increase morale.

Singapore
I have decided to invade Palembang. Ive reinforced Singapore and am sending the RN to this area. I will use amphip transports from Manila to pick up the two Australian divisions on Borneo and gather everything at Singapore. It should be possible to shut down Palembang airfield before the invasion.

Hokkaido
Im starting to move units to the Aleutians to build up bases for the invasion of Hokkaido.

Two days have passed.

Day 1 saw a sweep from Okinawa consisting of F4Us and F6Fs meet heavy resistance over one of the islands next to Okinawa. We were outnumbered and outgunned, F4Us against Me 262s and J7Ws proved to be too much.

Day 2 saw the Japanese navy attack. While I did expect some sort of surface combat sortie against my islands, I was surprised to see that he sent in so many ships. We must have faced most of the remaining Imperial fleet.

As you can see, we lost heavily. Troops lost were one Aviation Rgt and what remained of a naval construction rgt. Naturally we regret the ship losses and the troop losses, however the losses are a mere nuiscance. I will not bring in capital ships to this part of the map yet. I do not want to be drawn into skirmrishes well inside Kamikaze-range.

On the other hand, if I do not defend with surface forces, I might be facing bombardment runs against the Okinawa bases, and I really do not want to face that either.

I will bring in more destroyers and perhaps some CLs from the Philippines together with PTs and submarines. That should be enough to prevent bombardment runs against my airbases.

The fleet is right now reallocating to Pearl to support the invasion of Hokkaido, if Nemo keeps the Japanese fleet here around Okinawa, then my main objective has been achieved on this front. I want to make him think Im attacking here, I want to make him think that my main effort is Formosa and then southern Japan. I will continue to feed into this impression by committing airpower and light surface forces. I might even bring in some carriers to make the impression of a major effort.

I wanted to do some saturating attacks on Formosa this turn. All ports were hit to see if I could catch something at the docks. I also want to make Nemo think twice about basing ships at Formosa. Three large airfield attacks, at Pescadores, Karenko and Kagi.

These attacks have two obectives.
1) Prevent Nemo from basing aircraft or fleet units at Formosa.
2) Give Nemo the impression that an invasion of Formosa is coming.

All in all, it was a pretty awe-inspiring sight to see the airbases at Pescadores completely obliterated.

I will bring in more destroyers and perhaps some CLs from the Philippines together with PTs and submarines. That should be enough to prevent bombardment runs against my airbases.

Have you thought of using Baltimore-class CA's? They're just as fast as the CL's, have and impressive AAA armament, and their upgraded 8-inchers should be more powerful than the Japanese CA's.

Yeah, that might be a good idea. I have been thinking about bringing in some fleet units to make it appear Im building up an invasion fleet, and if I keep the TF in one of my own base-hexes, I should be able to draw out his airunits to fight on my terms.

Perhaps I should reconsider and bring in some capital ships to Okinawa. I should be able to cover them with my airunits, I have close to 500 fighters on Okinawa.

Two interesting things should happen tomorrow.

Im ordering a large daylight city strike on Hong Kong HI, and Im also ordering an all-out attack on Amami Oshima, if all goes according to plan (which wont happen since the weather is forcasted to be thunderstorms and Murphys law is what it is) I should be sweeping the base with 200+ fighters and then hitting it with around 300 heavies.

B-29s from Tinian will make a night attack on the airfield. Fighters from Okinawa will sweep the airfield and after that B29s from the Philippines will hit the airfields.

Im expecting Nemo to withdraw his surface forces today, and instead chase after my surface combat TFs with his kamikaze units and subs (and mines perhaps). Today should be a good day for that since Im putting most of my fighters into the air above Amami Oshima. On the one hand, I dont like fighting over his bases, on the other, I really want to catch some of those pesky fighters on the ground. I also want to keep up the attrition level here. Attrition works in my favour, not his, and I would be foolish to let him build up his airforce in peace. It also forces him to make some hard desicions over where (and if) he stand and fight, and how much he is willing to risk in order to keep those islands.

As for the USN, I think Im going to stay on target with the fleet, rather than let Nemo dictate the conditions of the fight. Ive got a cunning plan...and I want to stick to that plan as much as I can regardless of what he does. Sure, he might catch the occasional convoy with too little escort, on the other hand, I want to keep the initiative in this game instead of reacting to his attacks. I have such an overwhelming superiority in ships and planes, that the only real danger I face from the IJN right now is if I let Nemo mess with my head and make me react too much to his moves. On the other hand, I dont want to be reckless, so, some precautions will be taken by the USN.

In the mail conversation we had after I sent in my orders we discovered that we are both making offensive moves today. I hit Amami Oshima, and Nemo has decided to hit...Okinawa.

This upcoming turn could be bloody indeed.

Huge day today. I think we broke the back of Nemos fighting spirit today, he seems very desillusioned in our mail conversation.

The day had four distinct phases.

1) Naval combat around Okinawa. Nemo kicked our behind here. His surface combat TFs crushed my DD and PT TFs, he also got in a naval bombardment of Okinawa that cost me a dozen or so aircraft.

2) Defensive battle over Okinawa. Nemo sent in night bombers who were disrupted by our Black Widows and were completely ineffective. Then came two fighter sweeps, one with Me 262s and one with J7s and Nikkis. My P51Hs on CAP were amazing and achieved something like a 13-1 kill ratio against the best fighters Japan can put into the sky.

3) Offensive battle over Amami Oshima. First a night strike from B29s at Tinian disrupted the defences. Then a P 47 sweep cleared the way for my heavy bombers. Several hundred heavy bombers totally obliterated the airfields. I believe I achieved close to 2000 runway hits.

4) Offensive battle over Hong Kong. P 38s and P47s swept the base and after that B 24s and B 29s hit the heavy industry.

Have you considered hitting Kunashiri which is just east of Hokkaido? It has an AB SPS of 5 and would be immune from counterattack except via amphibious assault. Etoforu has an AB APA of 3 also. Both of these bases are in the Temperate zone (barely)

I would take anything Nemo says with a grain of salt - from reading his previous AARs, he is a master of manipulation & will never reveal to you his true feelings or intentions of a given situation. In fact, you could probably turn his words around 180 degrees to get a better sense of his actual meaning.

I've purposely stayed out of his side of this, because I want to see how things play out from the Allied side.

Excellent point -- Nemo can play a "head" game like no one else I've ever heard of.

I find it a bit troubling that you didn't manage a single torpedo hit on any of the IJN surface forces. Aren't the later-war USN torpedoes supposed to be fairly accurate?

I think I can tell when he is "serious" and when he is trying to get into my head. But on the other hand, Im sure we all feel that way [:o] you cant fool me...

Another turn has passed. Im attacking three airfields on Formosa just to keep them closed while the navy pass by on the way to Okinawa. I have set up four surface combat TFs that will take up position around Okinawa. They should arrive in a day or two. Im somewhat reluctant to commit my navy around Okinawa because I believe those islands are swarming with submarines, mines and torpedo boats right now. But at the same time I really cannot just yield control of that sea area to him.

Therefore my surface combat TFs are all set to follow ASW-TFs and/or mine sweeper-TFs. We'll see how far that gets me. Im also moving in dive bombers to Okinawa to deal with his DD TFs, however for some reason they did not fly today.

A jap recon aircraft over Manila scared me today. Im sending in alot more CAP to protect my bomber bases at the Philippines. Im also going to move out my B29s from Tinian and Guam, I dont want to use them from the super-obvious bases anymore than I have to.

Yeah, Im assaulting them at the same time as the invasion of Hokkaido. I really want to hit all these targets the same time and in strength, since he will throw everything including the kitchen-sink towards my invasion.

USN are approaching the combat area, and dive bombers from Okinawa score some hits. The contest for the waters off Okinawa has begun. I cannot imagine that I will lose this fight, the question is how much it will cost.

Im expecting alot of Kamikaze attacks tomorrow, together with submarine attacks.

This was a nice catch. I think Nemo is focusing alot of his defences on minefields, both offensive and defensive. At the same time, my minesweepers are vunerable to practically everything.

These two attacks were not ordered by me. The airunits attacking had orders to escort/cap at 50, but for some reason they decided to sweep Shanghai. We have two invasion TFs that have just finished loading at Iba. These units will invade the small islands off Formosa. Two surface combat TFs are taking up position there now to clear the way for the transports.

Orders for tomorrow:

Air force
Provide CAP over all surface combat TFs around Okinawa and Formosa.
Three night-airfield attacks ordered from the Philipines against Formosa and Shanghai.
Ground bombardment missions against the two islands where my troops should invade in 3 days.

Navy
Surface combat TFs to take up position around Okinawa. Four TFs consisting of 2xBB, 2xCA (or CL) and 12-16 DDs for Okinawa, and somewhat smaller TFs for Formosa.
