2.0 Unable to locate target bug?

Post by elmo3 »

The following sounds like a bug to me. I crippled a US CA in night combat and at dawn was looking forward to my a/c finishing it off. The first group got a couple of torpedo hits, so far so good. The next group was unable to locate the target even though it was crippled (it only managed to move a couple of hexes from the surface combat hex during the night), was on fire, and in partly cloudy weather. No big deal yet. However I then watched another 60 (at least) bombers that came in several waves and every single group got the same unable to find the target message. That seems extremely unlikely given the decent weather and the condition of the target. Anyone else see this yet?

I can send the PBEM file with password if anyone at Matrix wants it.

Dont think it's a bug, not 100 percent on this, but chances are you sunk the target, but your pilots didnt see the sinking. Then of course you have the subsequent waves still thinking there is a target when in actuality there is none left. I've had this happen many a time to me ,to find out later said target was sunk.

Remember though even though its clear weather, it can take time for ships to sink , and lets face it bombers aint gonna spend hours over target to wait and see. The gap in time before subsequent bombers reach thier target could be in that time the ship has sunk.

That could explain it. I did get a sunk report for that ship later in the same replay. Assuming you are correct, it sure would be nice if the manual explained this stuff. Would cut down on the false bug reporting quite a bit.

Hi :)

With FoW on, reports about some sunk ships may not appear in your intelligence reports for several weeks.

I like this idea: Sometimes You never really know whether those ships did sink . . .

This message has happened to me too, a lot (both as the defender and attacker). I believe that the planes pre-select their targets after air-to-air combat but before the bombers attack. This way, if their target sinks they have no target to attack (even if other ships are in the TF) and report no target found. It happened in version 1.3, 1.4, and 2.0. I haven't played earlier versions though.
I'm a hazard to myself.

If you have blasted a ship into eternity, and then your follow on bombers report they can't find the target, then celebrate. It is on the bottom of the sea. Usually, you will get a sinking report after the action. But even if you don't, you can take it to the bank that that ship is history.

What sucks is that the planes don't go look for another target in the same hex.
