The poor chaps in 243 Squadron had to deal with the tip of the spear in Singers. No. 17 Sqdrn is flying in Burma, I think.

Kudos to PO Brookes who managed to shoot down two enemy in a Buffalo and live to tell about it.

WO Harrison seems a bit of a slow learner but does have 2 kills.

WCDR Jeffrey: <group of pilots are walking toward the mess tent...one pilot walks in the opposite direction> Harrison, lad, the mess tent is this way.

WO Harrison: Oh, yes, thank you sir. <he turns to join the others. His boots are on the wrong feet>

I think that means he has a learning disability and needs extra time on time-limited tasks. Also, he is allowed to physically turn the map when he changes direction....you know...like a woman would do. [;)]

Seriously, I think it may mean he has no kills in the aircraft which he is currently flying (i.e., No. 30 Sqrn. is flying the Beautifulfighter but his kills were in the Kittyhawk)

Steroids, KEM. It's all about pilots juicing. These kills will never be viewed as legitimately as those from non-juicing pilots.

Or were these kills scored in a 162 game schedule, instead of a "real" 156 game schedule? [:'(]

Amen to that, although young Flt. Lt. de Groot might have some useful insight into NEIAF "recruiting" practices.

***********SWPAC HQ, Brisbane, June 16, 1942*************

<a senior Medical Corps officer enters the room and salutes>

Col. Manfred Ewald: You asked to see me sir?

Tall, patrician-looking fellow with affected corn cob pipe: Ah, yes, doctor. I wanted to see if you know anything about "juicing"?

Col. Manfred Ewald: <looks slightly anxious> Juicing, sir? I presume you don't mean the preparation of juices from whole fruits?

Tall, patrician-looking fellow with affected corn cob pipe: No, Col., I most certainly do not. I am talking about artificial enhancement of pilot performance.

Col. : I...I'm....not..

Tall, patrician-looking fellow with affected corn cob pipe: Look, Col., cut the crap! If the Aussies are doing it I want our boys doing it too. What if the Japs are onto it? Give it to me straight son.

Col. Manfred Ewald: Yes sir. There are two approaches that come to mind, the use of stimulants to improve awareness and reaction time and the use of blood doping.

Tall, patrician-looking fellow with affected corn cob pipe: Blood doping?

Col. Manfred Ewald: Yes, sir. A personal project of mine. If pilots were to transfuse themseleves with their own red blood cells, they might be able to tolerate higher altitudes without oxygen, thereby giving themselves an advantage over opponents.

Tall, patrician-looking fellow with affected corn cob pipe: Good! Find out if it against House Rules and look into it....and keep it quiet.....and...by the way...where the Hell did you get name like "Manfred"?

Col. Manfred Ewald: From my mother's side. They are from Podejuch.

Tall, patrician-looking fellow with affected corn cob pipe: Po-deh-jook? Never heard of it. Well, change it please. It sounds like a Kraut name.

Col. Manfred Ewald: Yes sir.

Judging by the fate of the other Buffalo pilots, his greatest achievement seems to be survival. Imagine what he could do in an actual airplane. [:D]

Bloody Hell! And I thought all that Jap success on high altitude zero sweep missions was just the "Zero bonus" [:@]*

* Epogen is a brand name for Erythropoetin, a hormone which causes the production of red blood cells. It wasn't even discovered yet in 1942...but....
