Comparing HUCE & H3UANW

Post by GBS »

I decided to purchase this having not played Harpoon 2 for many many years. They are both good but I prefer ANW. There doesn't seem to be as much to do in CE outside of course and speed, turning sensors on and off, playing with preferences and looking at all the data. I love the formation editor anf the mission editor in ANW. Much for fun and realistic to me.
WHERE ARE ALL THE SCENARIOS FOR ANW? CE has tons of battlesets but ANW seems to only have maybe 20 standalone scenarios. Help me please if I am missing them somehow because this is my favorite of the two games?

Possible bug in ANW. Each time I click on PICTURE on the Database window..the game freezes and stops running. I just stay away from that button but that doesn't seem right.

Thanks for the advice.

You should download the newest database versions, HUD3, PlayersDB and so on, than you will have enough scens to play until death.

I'm puzzled by this too.. what happened to the original ANW battlesets (regional conflicts 1&2, global conflicts 1&2, Cold War)?

Never having played ANW, I didn't know anything was "missing." Let's hope this gets cleared up for the "Ultimate" version.

To see the plethora of scenarios you were used to in H2...

1. From the Matrix autorun dealie click H3 Configuration
2. Go to the "Database Manager" tab
3. Select "Harpoon 3 Standard Database"
4. Click OK
5. click the "H3 Configuration" again.
6. On the "Launch H3 MP" tab click RUN by "Harpoon 3 Single Player"

You should see the variety of battlesets there. The background is that not every scenario has been rebuilt for use with every database so not all scenarios will appear for every database.

It would help if I read the manuals. Thanks Tony. You are a one-man wonder working this forum.

Aready reported to tech support. Has something to do with installing several versions of ANW.
Solution for now is to only install one verison.

Just got HUE and I thought I had read somewhere in this forum that a newer version of HCE allowed you to pause the game without that damned dialogue box in your face. I assumed that that version would be included in HUE, but the harpoon ultimate (ver 2009.05.0) menu links the Harpoon CE item to my old version of Harpoon CE (2008.044) Is there a newer version that should have shipped with HUE? Am I missing a patch? Anybody ever seen a version where the game is responsive to input while paused, or did I dream the whole thing?

Look ma, no pause dialog [:)]

Ultimate 'shipped/downloads' with 2009.050 so if you chose to install the HUCE component you should be able to track down the right winharp32.exe on your computer (C:\Matrix Games\HUCE\winharp32.exe by default).

Thanks for the response, Tony. I have two follow ups. well, ok, 3
1. I found winharp32 (2009.505) where you said I would find it. How do I link the Harpoon CE selection of H20run.exe to that version, rather than my previously installed version?
2. With 2009.050 pause is still bringing up a pause dialog box which steals the input focus so I can't issue orders or get to any other menu items. What's the trick of defeating that behavior? I am presuming in the graphic in your response, you are paused and issuing path orders and when you click OK, you will still be paused. I am using XP if you care.
3. What was that link over on Harpgamer to that exhaustive list of all the changes that have been made to HCE? I saw it here somewhere.
thanks

Barerabbit,
1. Not sure yet (I don't use the Matrix pretty menu but will look tonight)
2. The plus and minus keys change time compression, use the minus key at 1:1 time compression and it will change to 0:1 (paused).
3. You can look at ReleaseNotes.txt file in the game directory or look at http://harpgamer.com/harpforum/index.php?showtopic=2395 (the latter runs to the present beta build).

Thanks for the reply Tony
1. After you run winharp32.exe 2009.050 (from explorer, or whatever) the next time you summon Harpoon CE from the h20 menu, you get 2009.050. Bet there is a winparp32.ini involved somehow.
2. Oh,ok. I thought I looked for that, but I missed it. Thanks
3. I will bookmark it this time.
Thank you for taking time with this.

Yes, I'm sorry, I misread your question. I wrote the HC20Run.exe program and it grabs the location of HCE from the registry at:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Matrix Games\HCE\Options\BattleSetPath\

Tony, I noticed that the shortcut dropped into the start menu by the install routine points to HC20run.exe while the shortcut placed on the desktop points to autorun.exe and gets you to a higher level menu. Both shortcuts for ANW call autorun. If anyone else cant find 2009.050, that may be the culprit. And where is the right place to list little non project things like this?

I think you are just running the shortcut I like instead of the one from Matrix. The Matrix launcher dealie in the start menu is "Harpoon Ultimate Commander's Edition Game Menu".

I don't think there is an answer for the HC20run.exe that will please everyone so I'm likely to leave it how it is in terms of where it looks in the registry.
