Another day passes. Shanghai is hit again, this time the docks. I really want to send the message that I own the skies inside my fighter range, and that moving ships or basing aircraft inside that fighter range is stupid.

Ive also sent in a surface combat TF into the sea lanes between Shanghai and Japan. Basically I want to claim that piece of ocean. If he wants to move anything from China to Japan, he will have to use submarines or air transports. The days of TKs and xAKs moving freely across that body of water are over.

...or thats the idea anyway. Now I await a thousand kamikazes to contest my claim.

Another quick combat replay-posting.

Notice the losses at Tsingtao. I saw that he had flown in over 400 bombers and no fighters to that base (probably to deal with my surface raiders) so I rebased 120 B29s to Okinawa and ordered them to hit the airfield.

Surface raiders are returning to Manila for replenishment. Invasion fleet for the small island off Formosa is leaving port. Airfields around Okinawa are built up enough to support offensive missions soon, when that happens, the battle for southern Japan will begin in ernest.

Given what you can throw at a single base (been proven now at Shanghai & now Tsingiao (sp) - why don't you start hitting some of the Southern Japanese cities? You really need to start putting a dent in his aircraft production. What I know of this mod is that he's going to start producing some pretty serious aircraft - again, better to destroy the factories than try to face them in the air....

Korea may be a more viable target in this scenario because of the presumably reduced forces stationed there as a result of the Kwantung area army removal, but I don't know this for a fact.

It will be very interesting to see how this unfolds.  What I recall is that Korea was never seriously considered as it was too heavily defended and too difficult to secure, on par with an HI invasion.  So, this should be good to watch.

Im moving alot of troops from PH to Manila now. Ive also decided to land on the southern tip of Formosa to clear the sea-lanes between the PI and Korea. I will also mop up all the islands around Okinawa. When all those bases are cleared, I will invade Korea.

Not much happening right now. Ive taken Palembang and Im mopping up the islands off Okinawa and Formosa. Ive landed two divisions on Amami Oshima but they only achieved a 2-1 attack the first day. Im attacking again tomorrow.

Im also sending in a surface combat TF to the straits between Japan and Korea, there are alot of subchasers there who are wreaking havoc on my subs and I hope to sink some of them.

Yesterday we kicked off the battle for Osaka, and it will continue today. I figure that this is the one hex where Nemo has to defend against my fighter sweeps regardless of the cost. So Ive set up a rotating scheme of 450 fighters in three groups, one sweeps Osaka, one is resting at Manila and one is repairing at Clark. I figure I should be able to put up at least 100 fighters with less than 10 fatigue every day over Osaka. Ive done the same with B29s aswell, by cannibalizing disrupted units, I should be able to send 200 rested B29s to Osaka every day for at least a week.

In addition to the above, Ive got carrier TFs lined up in a similar way. Approach the coast to sweep Osaka, then head back to port to refill the squadrons and replenish the sorties. They will not come as often though, but every third day or so I should be able to do a fighter sweep from my CVs.

I think I should be able to break his defencs in a week or so. It will cost alot naturally, but I figure I can replace my losses faster than he can. It is perhaps not the most elegant of tactics, but I figure it will get the job done, and that is what matters.

Here is the relevant parts of the combat replay for the first day. Nemo wanted a change of houserules and I have agreed. From now on, my heavies will attack at 20k or higher.

As you can see, the big fighter sweeps went in after the B29s, this is most annoying and it definitively cost me alot of bombers. All in all I lost 60 B29s today. Heavy losses of cource, but I can absorb the losses. I have moved out these squadrons and flown in new fresh squadrons. I have roughly 300 B29s with orders to hit Osaka today. And another set of 200 B29s preparing at Manilla (i e repairing damaged aircraft), these 200 at Manila will rebase to Saipan tomorrow and fly to Osaka from there. Todays effort is based at Tinian, and the B29s you see in this combat report are right now at Guam, resting and refitting).

This happens all the time so I usually sweep for several turns before sending in the bombers in order to thin the herd. This may not work in this mod, I just dont know how fast he can replace his fighters. However, after a few turns of sweeping, the fighters seem to learn the way and come in first.

I think it really depends on where the bottlenecks in nemo's economy are.
If he's short on resources, hitting resource centers is best bang for buck.
If he's short on HI, hitting HI (or LI) works.
If he's swimming in HI, taking out production centers (like factories) is your best bet.

The only person who really know where nemo's bottlenecks are though is Nemo

The only person who really know where nemo's bottlenecks are though is Nemo .

He is short on HI, and he is desperately fighting to protect whatever HI he has left. Ive taken out all HI in China and Indo-China, the only HI left for him is in Japan and Korea. Of the roughly 4000 HI he has left, 2200 is in Osaka/Kyoto.

So...this is the decisive hex, just like Palembang in 41/42, Osaka/Kyoto is the decisive hex in 45/46. If I take it out, his HI will wither turn by turn, and even if he shuts everything off, whatever HI he has in stock will be eaten up by the pilot training program.

Why go after the aircraft factories or engine factories when all those factories need HI to work? Same with armaments. If I can take out his HI, his industry dies...all of it.

Im massing the fleet and troops at Manilla right now. Im expecting to launch the invasion in a month or so.

Okay, just curious on your strategy - if burning Osaka to the ground will shut down the factories, then you're heading in the right direction. One thing we've seen from some of the other AARs, is that you start getting diminishing returns from long-term city bombing - it works great for the first few strikes, but it becomes harder to get the rest as time goes on.

I'm looking forward to seeing this move forward & good luck.

Another couple of days have passed. Some more air-attacks on Osaka and Fukoyoka have knocked out another 200 HI or so. The new altitude limits on the city attacks are really hurting the bomber offensive. At 20k the B29s dont hit much.

Meanwhile Im gathering forces on Okinawa for the invasion of Korea. I should be ready to load the invasion fleet in two weeks or something like that. In the meantime, Im doing sweeps over southern Japan to try to bag as many fighters as possible. Im also starting to send carriers into the China sea to establish complete air supremacy in the region.
