About 10 Different Steel Panthers Games

Post by Cross »

I posted this graphic at a couple of the SP sites to help people understand the various SP games. There's a lot of confusion out there, and I hope this helps clear the fog for a few people.

cheers,
Cross

Edit: Corrected the date of SPMBT release

In the beginning of SP Mods there was an add-on to SPII called SP2:WW2 where you needed the SPII CD to play. I downloaded it from the now long dead site called The Gamers Net in 2000...

This add-on had new icons, sounds, scenarios (but no campaigns) etc.

Many of the names behind that add-on are well known from both main lines of SP design...

Looks like you need to add SPCW to that diagram, Cross [:D]

There's been a lot of mods over the years, and this isn't the first time a SP Civil War mod has been created. Past mods include:
  • SPWW1 (The Great War)
  • Wooden Ships and Steel Men aka. Steel Napoleon: Naval Warfare, 19th Century
  • Steel Naval aka. Steel Empire: Naval Warfare, 20th Century
  • 1890s Boer War
  • Steel Rifles (Age of Rifles Mod)
  • Futuristic Mod

There were other mods too; most never really got off the ground.

I only included H2H and Enhanced in the Time Line because of their popularity and visibility. They did 'get off the ground', perhaps played as much or more than the vanilla version of SPWaW.

Steel Rifles (Age of Rifles Mod)

I never heard of that one! Sounds interesting.

I could be wrong, but I think Welk used Age of Rifles to make one of his Napoleonic mods for SP.

Perhaps he just used the sounds from AoR, I don't recall.

Nice work on the American CW mod BTW. I saw some screen shots and it looks very well done.

Matrix actually supported the initial SPCW design team, and the project was called SP:AOTR (Age Of The Rifle). Due to the project languishing, they cut their support and moved on. I couldn't blame them.

*This was back in the glory days of 2001 when they were still supporting SP:WaW*

And thank you for the comment about the current SPCW project.

I just realised that I forgot another one:

SP Star Wars Mod [:D]

Someone really did put a Star Wars mod together for SP. I never played it, but did see a few screen shots.

A long time ago in a dirty land far, far away, I built a Hoth mod for SP:WaW when I was in Baghdad in 2008. Got a new computer, put all the old files on a flash drive, lost the flash drive. Had also uploaded it to MediaFire, and was advised that they delete stuff after 60 days. So it's long, long gone. I've been slowly reviving that mod, but has someone else released another SW mod?

So it was you that was responsible for the Star Wars mod. It really is quite a small planet. [;)]

I have few Star Wars sounds on my PC. I use them to make ring tones for my phone, or to edit Windows sounds. There's not many, but if you're interested I'll upload them somewhere for you to use.

I see, I was thinking there was another mod out. I didn't want duplicate work going on. Sure I'll take the sounds, a MediaFire link would work fine. Just PM me with the link.

Hmm most of those mods sounds familiar to me[;)]... Btw, does anyone know what happened to SPWW1? Is it really exist or not?

Here's a link to info about a WWI mod:

http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/SPWW1mod/

But I don't think it was ever finished and released. I seem to recall that they ran into difficulties.

IIRC, there was another attempt at a WWI mod - based on the windows version of SP - but I don't think that got as far as the one I linked.

*sniff*.....ah threads like this bring a tear to my eye. [:D] Does any other active computer wargame have as long a lineage? Great game. Still have my original 1995 SSI Steel Panthers ver 1.0 disk, as well as SP:WAW 1.0 disk. Sometimes for chuckles i'll load them up on my older computer just to see how far the game has evolved.

Game will probably never leave my HD in it's modern forms.....got WAW, WAW:Enhanced (havn't really tried this one yet though), WinSPWW2 and WinSPMBT. Four versions of the same game on one computer [:D]

Now if only there were more hours in the day!

I´d even go as far as adding Grigsby´s Battlegroup/Kampfgruppe and Panzer Strike/Typhoon of Steel to that development tree! [:)]

Think, the first "mod" I ever made, was fiddling with Panzer Strikes BASIC code to achieve a greenish background color, instead of the black one. Added a lot to my enjoyment in playing PS in those dark C64 days. [:D]

An interesting and useful timeline Cross, but Id like to point out some things.

-SPMBT came out in 2002 not 1999.
-SP2WW2 a mod that reguired an SP2 installation to work came out in late 1998.
-In 1999 SPWW2 was born when SSI released the actual code of SP2 to Camo Workshop (Then called SP Camo Workshop). SSI also released SP3 code and from that came out Matrix Games and SPWAW.
Note that SPWW2 also reguired you to have either the SP2 or SP3 CD until version 5 or 6 I think...

By the way I  still have the first SP CAMO Workshop mods for my Steel Panthers 2 that only adds the camoflage (no ww2 stuff) to all vehicles and the file date on the files range from 1998.06.25 to 1998.08.01.

Hey Rosollia,

You are absolutely right. That was pointed out to me on another thread.

The only correction to my image would be to move the SPMBT from 1999 to 2002.

I have a corrected image, and will upload it when I get time.

Thanks,
Cross

Does the WAW Enhanced or other mods for the SPWAW have higher resolution up to 1920?

I bought already WinSPWW2 ;-)
