Bodie and Brock Thoene wrote a series of historical fiction novels set in Europe during World War II. Several of the characters, while caught up in the events of the Holocaust, make observations something like this: "100 years from now, how and when we perished really won't matter. Everyone who is alive, good or bad, rich or poor, will have also passed away and joined us. Death will be the great equalizer."

The men who died at Pearl Harbor 69 years ago are now being joined in death by even the longest lived of their comrades and enemies who survived the war. Yet it doesn't really seem that death is the great equalizer. Most of those who died were young and unmarried. They never had children. Only their closest friends and family members may remember them today, and when those now elderly people pass away, the memories of the vast majority of casualties will fade into the mists of anonymity. There will just be forgotten graves where autumn leaves, and nobody else, are left to visit and remember.

Let's keep their memories alive as long as we can.

So side by side they lie, in ever growing number;
Sunken men and ships, by fate or fortune led;
To this, their final port relentless, sent to slumber;
Until the sea shall render up her dead.

Shall render up her dead, to all their olden glories;
Shall render up what now, so well she keeps;
Forgotten lives, unfinished stories;
From these dim depths, where honor sleeps.

" ... and the Earth and the Sea shall render up their dead ... "

Most of it was from a poem called 'Atlantis', by Guy Whitmore Carryl. I tweaked it a bit and apologize to his shade, but think he won't mind.
